Guy E. Johnson
Died: Friday, August 19, 2005
Age: 94
WOLFEBORO - Guy E. Johnson, long time resident of Reading, Mass., and recent resident of Wolfeboro, died peacefully Aug. 19 in his 94th year.
Johnson was affectionately know as the "Candy Man" at the Boston Garden where he spent 63 years as a Bruins season ticket holder. The "candy" was his ever-present pocketful of Life Savers, which he passed out or tossed around the Garden at every game – everyone from the parking lot attendant to Harry Sinden had a roll of the things by night's end. His long time devotion to the B's was recognized one special night when Johnson was featured on the Jumbotron and got to be the MVP at a game – such a star!
Part of Johnson's legacy is how he shared his love of hockey with young and old alike, taking legions of kids to hundreds of games over the years and patiently explaining the rules, the penalties, the blue line, the crease, and then introducing them to the players – so many of these "kids" became life long fans as well.
Johnson wore many hats in his lifetime, from bandleader and ballroom dancer in the '30s to restaurant and gas station owner in the '40s and '50s, and finally in construction as a drilling and blasting technician until his retirement at the age of 78. As part of the crew that built Route 93 from Salem to Concord, Johnson appeared in a segment of "This Old House," demonstrating how to set a blasting cap. His "student" on the show was astronaut Alan Shepard, who was a quick learner and had a great time blowing up a granite boulder!
Johnson was accompanied in his life's journey by his wife of 63 years, Lydia, who died in 1999. They were a formidable team, raising their own three kids as well as any others who came along. This included nieces and nephews, grandkids and friends and just about anyone else who asked to come in. They kept an "open door, full table" household going for a lifetime and loved the company they kept along the way. It can truthfully be said that life at the Johnsons was a never-ending party, including Guy's very stale, overused and really bad jokes!
Predeceased by a son James in 1960, Johnson is survived by his son, Guy Jr. of Reading, Mass., his daughter, Rita Johnson of Wolfeboro, grandsons Christopher McNulty and his wife Regina of N. Reading, Mass., Nathan McNulty and his partner Nancy of Salem, and Glen McNulty and his wife Heather of Methuen, Mass., and three great-grandchildren, Brian, Jack and Meghan. He is also survived by two sisters, Lulu Hitz of Winter Haven, Fla., and Verna Grant of Rochester, many nieces, nephews and friends, his ballroom dancing buddies, fellow members of I.U.O.E. Local 4, and of course, his beloved dog Bruin of Wolfeboro.
A celebration of Johnson's life will take place at his daughter's home in Wolfeboro Sunday afternoon, Aug. 28. Friends and family are invited to bring their memories, share the laughter, and to help plant a tree in his honor.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lakes Region Humane Society, P.O. Box 2231, Wolfeboro, NH 03894 or the Burbank Ice Arena, Symonds Way, Reading, MA 01864 would be greatly appreciated.
The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Wolfeboro is in charge of the arrangements.
