Matthew Allen
Died: Thursday, January 27, 2005
Age: 27

Air Force Academy graduate

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Matthew Allen passed away on Jan. 12. He was 27, born in Walla Walla, Wash., on August 29, 1977, to Patricia and Larry Allen.

Allen graduated from Sehome High School in 1995 and the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1999. He ran track and cross country at Sehome and the Air Force Academy. At graduation, he received the MVP award for cross-country running. After the Air Force, he returned to Bellingham and pursued his love of the outdoors. Most days he could be found fishing the Nooksack or running the trails with the family dog. He was loved and respected by everyone around him.

He leaves his Mom and Dad; his sister Tricia, his brother CJ; his grandfather Howard Bean of Wolfeboro; and his grandmother, Ethel Allen.

Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, Everson, WA 98247; or the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (Nami.org).

Lois C. Bitter
Died: Thursday, January 27, 2005
Age: 89

NEW LONDON - Lois C. Bitter, 89, of Hilltop Place, New London, died Thursday, Jan. 27. She was born in Troy, N.Y. on March 19, 1915, the daughter of Walter Wilkinson and Gertrude Ethel (Frost) Corry. She received a B.A. degree from Skidmore College in 1937, and attended Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.

In 1939, she married H. Calvin Bitter in West Hartford, Conn., where she lived until the move to Appletree Cottage in New London in 1966. Bitter moved to The Bald Peak Colony Club in Melvin Village, in 1982, and then to New London in 1990. She was a former member of the Town and County Club of Hartford and The Highland Park Club of Lake Wales, Fla. She had served on the board of trustees of The Tracy Memorial Library, New London, was a member of the New London Hospital Auxiliary and had been on the Summer Residents Committee.

She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, and her daughter Jan C. Hughes of West Hartford. She leaves a daughter, Katherine B. Phillips of Mirror Lake; five grandchildren: Katherine Hughes Sweet, Richard L. Hughes IV, Tyler B. Phillips, Jr., Katherine Phillips Weinberg, and Christopher B. Phillips; and a great-granddaughter, Holly V. Phillips.

Private graveside services will be held in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford, at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Kearsarge Area Council on Aging, P.O. Box 1263 or to Tracy Memorial Library, P.O. Box 1919, both New London, NH 03257. Chadwick Funeral Service of New London is in charge of arrangements.

Alice A. Tuttle
Died: Tuesday, January 25, 2005
Age: 78

Active in the Wolfeboro community

WOLFEBORO - Alice A. Tuttle, 78, of Birch Hill Estates, died Jan. 25 at her home in Wolfeboro. She was born March 12, 1926 in Nashua, the daughter of Wilfred and Gladys (Holt) Tuttle. Alice lived in Wolfeboro for most of her life. She attended Carpenter School and was a graduate of Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro.

Alice was very active in the Wolfeboro community. Alice was a life-long member of the First Congregational Church, and sang in the church choir for 47 years. She worked as a telephone operator for New England Telephone for 37 and 1/2 years. She served as a volunteer at Huggins Hospital and was "Volunteer of the Year" in 1992. Over the years Alice achieved more than 5,000 hours volunteering in the gift shop and sorting and delivering mail at the hospital. She also attended the First Baptist Church Bible Study in Wolfeboro and the Tuftonboro United Methodist Church Bible Study as well.

Tuttle also belonged to several organizations including the Ladies of the Lakes Quilters Club; Clearlakes Chorale; Huggins Hospital Aid Association and Huggins Hospital Aid Street Fair; the Lake Shore Grange #128; Wolfeboro Senior Citizens Club; American Legion Auxiliary; the Gibson Center for Senior Citizens; the Winnipesaukee Chapter of DAR, the Village Players and the Active Older Adults.

She leaves her nephews; James Tuttle, Antrim, and Robert Tuttle, Wolfeboro; and a niece, Ann Tuttle, Milwaukee, Wis., as well as nephews.

Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Wolfeboro in the spring.

Donations in her memory may be made to the First Congregational Church Choir or the Clearlakes Chorale.

Ellen J. Richard
Died: Tuesday, January 25, 2005
Age: 99

Enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading

ROCHESTER - Ellen J. (Lovett) Richard, age 99, formerly of Sanbornville, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 25 at SunBridge Care of Rochester, where she resided for the past six years.

Born June 14, 1905 in Alton, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Maude (Jones) Lovett. She had previously resided in Sanbornville, Middleton and Rochester.

A homemaker and mother, Ellen enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and reading.

The widow of the late Alfred J. Richard, she is survived by her daughter Kathryne and son-in-law Lawrence Cameron of Sanbornville, five grandchildren: Justine Ellis of Newmarket, Alan Cameron of Liberty, S.C., Donna Pelton of Rochester, Debra Smith of Lebanon, Maine, and Brenda Franklin of Middleton, nine great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter, also several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by a daughter: Barbara Richard, also three sisters and a brother.

There are no services planned. Interment will be in the spring at Old Riverside Cemetery in Alton. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the New Hampshire Association for the Blind, 25 Walker Street, Concord, NH 03301. Arrangements are in the care of Peaslee Funeral Home, 2079 Wakefield Road, Sanbornville, NH.

Albert R. Patch
Died: Monday, January 24, 2005
Age: 84

World War II Army veteran

FARMINGTON - Albert R. Patch, 84, of Summer Street in Farmington, died on Monday, Jan. 24, at Concord Hospital after a long illness.

Born April 25, 1920, in Wakefield, he was the son of Mary E. Patch Demeritt and stepson of William Demeritt. He resided in Farmington for most of his life.

A United States Army Veteran of World War II, he served in France and Germany, at the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Purple Heart.

A retired shoeworker, he had worked at local shoe factories, including H.O. Rondeau Shoe and Alton Shoe Co. in Farmington.

A member of the D.A.V. and the American Legion, Albert enjoyed gardening, fishing, riding his bike, sitting on the square in town, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Effie M. (Cole) Patch, whom he married on May 24, 1947, his son Roger, and daughter-in-law, Marie Patch, of Middleton; grandchildren, Vickie and her husband, Walter, of Middleton, Glenn, and his wife, Annette, of Wakefield and Ann and her husband, Phil, of Wakefield. He was also blessed with many great- grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren, also a sister, Mazie Hayes of Farmington, and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by three sisters, Betty Brown, Alice King and Ethel Donnell, and a brother, William Patch.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. at Peaslee Funeral Home, 24 Central St., in Farmington, NH 03835, with The Reverend Robert Cole, officiating. The calling hour is prior to the service from 1-2 p.m. Interment will be in the spring at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Farmington.

If desired, memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Farmington Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Main Street, Farmington, NH 03835.

Ansel E. Huston Jr.
Died: Monday, January 24, 2005
Age: 76

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard retiree

DOVER – Ansel E. Huston Jr., fondly known as "Andy" or "Sam," 76, of Piscataqua Road, died Monday, Jan. 24 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. He had lived at the Inn at Spruce Woods for the past several months.

Born in Freedom May 18, 1928, he was the son of Ansel E. and Goldie M. (Thurston) Huston Sr.

Initially he was employed in home delivery for Badge's Diary and H.P. Hood Co., and later by Sealtest. He retired from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after 23 years of service as an electrician in Shop 51.

He moved to Dover in the early 1950s. He was a handyman and caretaker, using his abilities to help others.

Family members include four sons: Wayne F. McBride and his wife Marilyn of Wolfeboro; David P. McBride and his wife Peggy of Wolfeboro; Michael P. McBride and his wife Karyn of Rochester; and Ansel E. Huston III and his wife Gail of Lee; two daughters: Sandra G. McBride-Scott of Rochester; and Diane L. Loiselle and her husband Peter of Barrington; one brother, Roland E. Huston of Rye; one sister, Mary H. Manning of Portsmouth; 11 grandchildren, Elizabeth McBride-Lilleg of Iowa City, Iowa; John McBride of Denton, Texas; David McBride, Jr. of East Kingston; Matthew McBride of Hoboken, N.H.; Corey McBride of Rochester; Aaron McBride of Lyndonville, Vt.; Melissa Barratt of Dover; Kelsey Huston of Lee; Tawnya Pedro of Lebanon, Maine; Nick Loiselle and Chris Loiselle, both of Barrington; and five great-grandchildren: Kassandra Pedro, Brett Pedro, Jase McBride, Jade Barratt and Christian Barratt.

Mr. Huston was predeceased by his wife, Bertha J. (Dearborn) Huston who died September 3, 2002 and by a brother, Alfred A. Huston.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 27, at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover, with Rev. Deacon Ginny Slawnwhite officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Elmore Bosworth Roberts
Died: Monday, January 24, 2005
Age: 83

Beloved minister and teacher

WOLFEBORO - Reverend Elmore Bosworth Roberts, 83 of Rollingwood Drive, Wolfeboro died Jan. 24 at Huggins Hospital.

He was born in Providence, R.I., April 15, 1921, the son of the late Elmore Bosworth and Hattie Mildred (Jones) Roberts. His early education was in Providence Public Schools and he graduated from Providence Central High School in January of 1939, the president of his class.

In Sept. 1939 he enrolled at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. to begin his studies for the Christian ministry. That school year was never completed as he was called home because of serious illness in the family.

He was employed in mid-1940 at the Brown and Sharpe Manufacturing Co. working as a time clerk in the boxing department.

In August 1941 he married Dorothy May Davie of Pawtucket, R.I. Their daughter was born on Oct. 31, 1942.

In Sept. 1942 he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard where his boot camp training was at the Provincetown Inn in Cape Cod. He became a cook serving at Chatham Lifeboat Station, Scorton Neck Beach Patrol Barracks in East Sandwich, Cleveland Ledge Lighthouse in Buzzards Bay, Officer's Mess at the Cape Cod Canal Captain of the Port Office and at Advanced Cooks and Baker's School at Avery Point in Groton, Conn. He was honorably discharged from the Coast Guard in October 1945.

He was employed from October 1945 until March 1946 at the Gilman Paper Co., in Pawtucket, R.I., terminating that employment to enter Brown University to begin his ministerial studies. March to June of 1946 was the last of the wartime academic trimesters.

In Nov. 1946, after successfully satisfying the Rhode Island Conference of Congregational-Christian Ministers, he was called as pastor of the Pawcatuck Congregational Church in Pawcatuck, Conn., just over the line from Westerly, R.I.

He served that church until his 1950 graduation from Brown and a call to the First Church of Christ (Congregational) in Clinton, Conn., a much easier commute for his continuing studies at Yale University Divinity School.

He received his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Yale in 1955 and on July 3, 1955 he was ordained to the Christian ministry at the Clinton Church.

During his 10 years in the Clinton pastorate he took many active roles in the Clinton Summer Playhouse and wrote and produced his version of the passion play, "Christ the Lord," in which approximately 50 church and community members played active roles, built and shifted scenery, created props and costumes which were insured for thousands of dollars. This drama played to some 5,000 people in the years in which it was presented.

In the fall of 1960, he resigned his Clinton pastorate to accept the position of ninth grade teacher of English language arts at the Robert E. Fitch Jr. High School in Groton, Conn. A year later he was moved to the newly built Carl C. Cutler Junior High School and was joined by his wife, who taught remedial reading and seventh and eighth grade English. He taught at the Cutler school until 1982, serving as chairman of the Language Arts Department for the last 15 years of his tenure. At the time of their retirement the family moved to their home on Lovell Lake in Sanbornville.

He was honored by his teaching peers in Groton by being elected to the Groton Educators Hall of Fame in 1992.

After he enjoyed three years of retirement, he accepted a call to become the pastor of the Water Village Community Church in Ossipee in 1985. He served the Water Village Church until Sept. 1, 2001 when he retired and was honored by his congregation with the title of Pastor Emeritus.

He and his wife sold their Lovell Lake home in June of 2003 and took up residence at Sugar Hill Retirement Community, a subsidiary of Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.

He was a member of the Retired Teachers of Connecticut, the American Association of Retired Persons and the Wakefield Congregational Church of the United Church of Christ.

He leaves his wife "Dot" Dorothy May (Davie) Roberts, a daughter Bethany Ann Morry of Auburndale, Fla.; a granddaughter Kristen Michelle (Morry) Pennell; a sister, Martha Greene of Barrington, R.I.; and three great-grandchildren: Elizabeth Autumn Pennell, Benjamin Winter Pennell and Luke Richard Pennell of Springfield, Vt.

He was a loving husband, a devoted father and a dedicated pastor and teacher. Those who knew him and loved him will remember him and he will be deeply missed.

A Memorial Service will be held in the Wakefield Congregational Church, UCC at a time to be announced. Graveside services will be held later in Lovell Lake Cemetery, Sanbornville and will be private. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.

The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Wolfeboro is in charge of the arrangements.
