Robert Chalmers, Jr.
Died: Monday, May 23, 2005
Age: 68
MIRROR LAKE - Robert Chalmers, Jr., 68, died Monday evening, May 23, at his home in Mirror Lake, from an aggressive form of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, a.k.a. Lou Gehrig's disease), which was diagnosed two months earlier.
Bob was born December 13, 1936 in Elizabeth N.J., the son of the late Robert and Lillie (Dunn) Chalmers, both born in Scotland. In 1973, Bob and his family moved to Wolfeboro. He and his wife Susan owned and operated the Bittersweet Restaurant in Wolfeboro for 10 years, selling it in 1985. He worked in the real estate market as well as construction. In 1996, he built his dream home on Mirror Lake.
Bob was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in the 101st Airborne Division. He most recently worked with the Wright Museum in Wolfeboro where he was greatly respected for his carpentry skills, among many other talents.
Bob loved fishing, gardening, card games, antique cars, everything Civil War, and his annual trip to the Hershey car show. Bob was loved by a great many people for his charming sense of humor, his wonderful outlook on life, his persistence to detail, his willingness to help others, and his easy smile.
Bob is survived by his daughters Bonnie Stout and her husband Bill of Kensington, Conn., and Robin Mason and her husband Jerod of Bedford, Mass.; two grandchildren, Aliana Stout and Kayleigh Mason; a sister Barbara Stoll and her husband Erik of Interlachen, Fla.; dear friends Brian Hennessy, who was like a son to him, and Brian's wife Abigail Adams of Boylston, Mass.; nieces, nephews, and his devoted dog Maggie, who was always by his side. His loving wife Susan (Henry) Chalmers died three years ago.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held Saturday, July 23 at 4 p.m. at the Wright Museum. Burial will be in the St. Andrews Episcopal Church memorial garden in New Providence, N.J. at a later date.

WOLFEBORO - A celebration of the life of Robert Chalmers, who died May 23, will be held Saturday, July 23, at 4 p.m. at the Wright Museum on Center Street in Wolfeboro. Family and friends are invited to attend.

Elizabeth "Betty" Bennett Black Dorsey
Died: Saturday, May 21, 2005
WOLFEBORO - Elizabeth B. Dorsey, formerly of Bradenton, Fla., Andover, Mass. and Wolfeboro, died May 21.
She was born in Auburn, N.Y., January 13, 1925, daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Asel James Bennett.
She leaves her husband, Richard F. Dorsey of Marietta, Ga.; sisters Eleanor B. Haeffner of Bradenton, Fla., Jean B. Schumaker of Auburn, N.Y. and brother Robert A. Bennett of Coral Springs, Fla. She also leaves her children and their spouses, Nancy B. Black and Geoffrey K. Ayres of South Weymouth, Mass.; Dr. Charles H. Black, III and Anette P. Black of Montauroux, France; Lynn B. Reed and Bradford L. Reed of Jacksonville, Fla., and Ann E. Black and Neil M. Cheney of Newton, Mass and Wolfeboro. In addition, she leaves six grandchildren.

Janet McLean Spaulding

Age: 84
AUBURN, Maine - Janet McLean Armstrong, 84, a resident of Schooner Estates in Auburn, Maine, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 21. She was born May 12, 1921 in Minneapolis, Minn. to Rev. John H. and Ida McLean. Her early years were spent in New Haven, Conn. and Cambridge, Mass. She graduated from Bates College in 1941 and went on to Simmons School of Social Work in Boston, graduating in 1943. Janet met her husband, Russell "Bud" Armstrong at Bates College. They were married in September 1943 and experienced many adventures during 30 years in the U.S. Army and afterwards when they retired to Wolfeboro. She had a deep personal pride in her contributions as an Army wife from WWII through the Cold War. It was her patriotic contribution intertwined with her love of Russell that she felt deeply.
Janet leaves her children, Charles (Andrea Eusden) Armstrong of Auburn, Maine; Capt. Douglas (Gerrie) Armstrong of Susan, Va.; and Becky (Ken) Havekost of Seattle, Wash. She also leaves her six grandchildren, Sam and Ben Armstrong, Margaret Armstrong and Elizabeth Puett, Tucker and Josh Havekost; and her two great-grandchildren, Blake Armstrong and Ansley Porter. She also is survived by a niece, Loring Bradlee of Topsfield, Mass. Her husband, Col. Russell B. Armstrong died in 1988. Her sister, Flora McLean, also predeceased her.

Bessie Weeks

Age: 77
WAKEFIELD - Bessie (Taylor) Weeks, 77, of New Port Richey, Fla., and East Wakefield, died May 17 at Morton Plant North Hospital in New Port Richey, Fla. after a long illness.
Bessie was born in Wolfeboro, November 9, 1927, the daughter of the late Frank Taylor and Ida (Moody) Taylor Chamberlain.
She worked for BankEast Bank starting as a teller, and retiring as a money manager officer after 23 years. She was an avid golfer and was a member of Indian Mound Golf Course in Ossipee.
She leaves her husband of 17 years, Harry Weeks, of New Port Richey, Fla. and East Wakefield; two brothers, Harold "Skip" Taylor and his wife Nancy of Phoenix, Ariz., and James Taylor of Wolfeboro; her twin sister Bertha (Taylor) Weeks and her husband Lawrence of Wolfeboro; one niece, four nephews and many great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her nephew, Bill Weeks.
A graveside service will be at Woodman Cemetery in Wakefield, at a later date.
The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Wolfeboro is in charge of the arrangements.
R. Burke Fahlman
Died: Saturday, March 12, 2005
Age: 79
OSSIPEE - R. Burke Fahlman, 79, died March 12, 2005 of complications from Alzheimer's at Mountain View Nursing Home in Ossipee, where he had been a resident since 1996. A World War II Navy veteran (1943-46), he graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a B.S. in Microbiology in 1950. In 1954, he moved with his wife, whom he married in 1950, to "The Ridge," on Brown's Ridge Road in Wolfeboro. He leaves his wife Lucille, of Arizona; his daughter, Betsy Fahlman-Ball, of Tempe, Arizona; and his son Lars Peter Fahlman of Baltimore, Md. His ashes will be buried in Epping. Henry G. Deering Jr.

Age: 94
WOLFEBORO – Henry G. Deering, Jr., 94, of Ossipee, died Friday, March 11 at Huggins hospital in Wolfeboro, where he had been a resident in the Extended Care Facility since September 2003.
Deering was born May 29, 1910, in West Warwick, R.I., the son of Henry Deering Sr. and Minetta Shepard. He was married to Virginia Durfee for 44 years before her death in 1980. They had three daughters.
In Providence, R.I., Deering worked as a Driver/Salesman for What Cheer Laundry for many years. In 1971, he and Virginia and their daughter Carole and son-in-law Ed Capron moved to New Hampshire, where they built Deer Cap Campground in Ossipee.
Deering will be fondly remembered as a fixture at the campground office and ice cream shop where he would man the office and fill LP gas bottles often from 8 in the morning until 9 at night. He would regularly be seen riding his mountain bike around the camp until he was 89. He "retired" from his duties in the campground at the age of 91.
In addition to his wife, Deering was preceded in death by his brothers Norman, Morris and Robert, and his youngest daughter, Carole Capron. He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Tougas and Beverly Trenn and her husband William, both of Warwick, R.I., a son-in-law Ed Capron of Center Ossipee, eight grandchildren; Virginia Conway, Eddie Tougas, Debbie Sheriden, Cheryl Morgan, Christine Rollinson, Bill Trenn, and Bob Capron all of Rhode Island and David Capron of Center Ossipee, and 16 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Huggins Hospital Activities Program.
Calling hours will be on Friday, March 18 from 5-7 p.m., and a memorial service will be held Saturday, May 19 at 10 a.m. Lord Funeral Home in Wolfeboro is in charge of the arrangements.
Katherine L. Hamilton
Died: Friday, March 11, 2005
Age: 87
WOLFEBORO - Katherine L. Hamilton, 87 of Laurel Circle, Wolfeboro Commons, died March 11 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.
Hamilton was born in Boston, Mass. Feb. 9, 1918 daughter of the late Walter and Mary (Brown) Stickney. She graduated from Brighton High School in Brighton, Mass.
A long time resident of Wilmington, Mass., she has lived in Wolfeboro since 1982 where she has been a communicant of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, played bridge with the Ladies Duplicate Bridge Club and the Hospital Aid Bridge group. She also was a past member of the Newcomers Club and enjoyed traveling.
Pre-deceased by her husband Frank Hamilton in 1982, she leaves a son Frank Hamilton of Plaistow, two daughters, Janet Hamilton of Pembroke, Mass, and Joyce DaForno of Oakridge, N.J.; and a sister, Claire Mulligan of Medford, Mass. She was also a devoted grandmother of five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visiting Hours will be 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, at the Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 85 Mill St., Wolfeboro.
A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12 p.m. at St. Katharine Drexel Church on South Main St., Wolfeboro.
Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery in Wilmington, Mass.

James J. Ficke
Died: Wednesday, March 09, 2005
Age: 65
ALTON - James J. Ficke, 65, of Suncook Valley Road in Alton, died Wednesday evening, March 9, at home, after a battle with cancer.
Born Aug. 12, 1939 in Seward, Neb., a son of the late Melvin C. and Gertrude (Skala) Ficke, the family moved to Springfield, Ore., where he graduated from high school and joined the Navy. He resided in Alton since 1987.
A Veteran of the United States Navy, he retired in 1990 after a 30-year career, having served on several submarines.
For the past 15 years, he was employed in production management with Poland Spring, a division of Nestle Waters.
He enjoyed working in his yard and loved antiquing.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Ardena "Cookie" (Schlecht) Ficke of Alton; a daughter, Kimberly S. Floyd of Fargo, N.D.; two sons, Melvin C. "Mike" Ficke of Minneapolis, Minn. and Christopher J. Ficke of Manahawkin, N.J.; several grandchildren; his mother, Gertrude Ficke Lasagna of Springfield, Ore.; and two brothers, Michael D. Ficke of Springfield, Ore. and David D. Ficke of Eugene, Ore.
As per his request, there are no services planned. Arrangements are in the care of Peaslee Alton Funeral Home, 12 School Street in Alton.
