ALTON - Beatrice C. Pogson, age 75, of Barnes Avenue in Alton, died on Thursday, Jan. 20, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.
Born Oct. 14, 1929 in Lynn, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Hilda M. (Roberts) Pogson. She resided in Alton since 1991, having come from St. Petersburg, Fla.
She was a member of the Alton Garden Club.
Survivors include her sister: Dorothy M. Davis of Alton, three nieces: Carol Collins of Alton, Judith Flynn and Barbara Bernard, both of Millbury, MA, a nephew: Douglass A. Pogson of Saugus, Mass., also several grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. She was pre-deceased by a sister, Hilda B. Tarbox, and a brother, Arthur W. Pogson.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Peaslee Alton Funeral Home, 12 School Street, Alton, NH.
Gloria F. Duffy

Served as Brookfield Supervisor of the Checklist
BROOKFIELD - Gloria Duffy, 78, died Jan. 20 at home comforted by her loving husband Peter, after a brief illness. She was born on June 11, 1926 in Sanbornville, the daughter of Ralph and Emma (Jewett) Kennett. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a graduate of Spaulding High School Class of 1944. She lived in Dover for 42 years before retiring to 200 Wentworth Road in Brookfield.
During her residence in Dover, she worked as a sales associate at several retail dress shops including Jordan Marsh and Yvonne's Specialty Shop.
She served for many years as one of the Supervisors of the Checklist for Dover and Brookfield. She was also an active member of St. Joseph's Parish in Dover and St. Anthony's Parish in Sanbornville. She enjoyed dancing, playing the piano, knitting, and being with family and friends.
The family includes her husband of 56 years. Peter J. Duffy of Brookfield; five daughters: Sharon (Duffy) Pearce and husband Thomas of Bow; Anne (Duffy) Erickson and husband Robert of Rochester; Kathleen (Duffy) Williams and husband Barry of Dover; Carol Duffy of Belmont; and Maureen Duffy of Nashua; two sons: Paul Duffy and his wife Carolyn (Heps) of Hampton, and Mark Duffy and his wife Linda (Jones) of Sanbornville; 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
She was predeceased by her sister, June (Kennett) Eaton of Portland, Maine, and stepmother, Lydia Kennett of Sanbornville.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Anthony's Parish in Sanbornville Jan. 26 with Fr. Edmund A. Babicz, pastor as celebrant.

Charlotte G. McDermott
Died: Wednesday, January 19, 2005
Age: 91
Huggins volunteer for 50 years
WOLFEBORO - Charlotte G. McDermott, 91, died Jan. 19 at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Wolfeboro. A resident of Wolfeboro since 1948, she was the widow of John W. McDermott, who died in 1991. For many years they resided at 72 South Main Street, before moving to Harvey Brook Road in Birch Hill Estates in 1989.
McDermott was born in Waltham, Mass. on June 14, 1914, the daughter of the late William F. and Jane M. Gibbs of Waltham. She graduated from Waltham High School in 1931 and from the Chamberlain School in Boston in 1933. She married John McDermott in 1938.
After moving to Wolfeboro, she and her husband became deeply involved in the community and remained so throughout their lives. She was a member of First Congregational Church in Wolfeboro for over fifty years, serving on various committees and boards. In later years, she and her husband served as volunteer coordinators for countless weddings on behalf of the Church.
She was a Girl Scout leader from 1953-1963, and she was recognized for fifty continuous years of service as a Huggins Hospital volunteer and member of the Huggins Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of Hospice of Southern Carroll County, the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, the Governor Wentworth Arts Council, and the Wolfeboro Historical Society.
She was also a member of the Lakes Region Grange and was the recipient of the Grange Community Service Award in 1994. She served as a member of the Board of Directors of Hearthstone Homes, the Wolfeboro housing for the elderly. In recognition of their many contributions and years of service to the Wolfeboro community, John and Charlotte McDermott were the recipients of the Lions Club Citizen of the Year Award in 1980.
She leaves her son, John W. McDermott, Jr., and daughter-in-law, Emily Sykes McDermott, of Amherst, Mass.; her daughter, Cynthia M. Kaplan, and son-in-law, Paul W. Kaplan of Gunnison, Colo. and Swans Island, Maine. She also leaves a granddaughter, Dr. Kathryn A. McDermott, and her husband, Mark V. Landeryou, of Amherst, Mass., and their two children, James and Charlotte, who was named for her great-grandmother. McDermott is also survived by her sister, Carolyn Carpenter McGhee, of Lewistown, Mont., and by a number of nieces and nephews, and their children. A brother and sister-in-law, William and Vivienne Gibbs of Bow, died in 1995.
A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church, Wolfeboro, at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lakes Region Humane Society, P.O. Box 2231, Wolfeboro, NH 03894 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Owen C. Swimm
Died: Tuesday, January 18, 2005
AUBURN, Calif. - Owen C. Swimm died Jan 18 in Auburn, Calif. He was born March 9, 1922, in Clarks Harbor, Nova Scotia to Lovitt and Marjorie Swimm. He was preceded in death by one brother, Bradford Swimm. Swimm and his wife of 61 years are former residents of Wolfeboro.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Eleanor Swimm, his daughter, Steveann Mentas; two grandsons, Mark and Jason Mentas; and his great-granddaughter Carli Rose. He was a member of Morning Star Masonic Lodge in Wolfeboro.
A graveside service at Lakeview Cemetery will be held in the spring.
Bruce K. Gregory
Died: Sunday, January 16, 2005
Age: 56
Avid music collector
NORTH CONWAY - Bruce K. Gregory, 56, of North Conway, died Jan. 16, at his home. Born in Newton, Mass., the son of Ralph and Dorothy (Bazley) Gregory, he had lived in North Conway for several years.
Gregory was an avid collector of music and enjoyed playing records.
His family includes his mother, Dorothy Gregory of Wolfeboro and a brother, Richard Gregory.
A memorial service will be held today (Thursday) at 1 p.m. at the NCIL office, 20 Swett Street in North Conway.
The Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway is in charge of arrangements.
Robert J. Emmel
Died: Saturday, January 15, 2005
Age: 57
Former President of Century 21 Dockside
POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - Robert J. (Bob) Emmel, 57, of Pompano Beach, Fla. was run over and killed by a hit and run driver on Jan. 15. He grew up in the Boston area and graduated from Northeastern University. Before moving to Florida, he lived in Wolfeboro, where he was the president of Century 21 Dockside Realty. At the time of his death, he was the senior vice president of The Financial Store in Boca Raton, Fla., where he was a well-respected financial advisor.
Emmel was an avid sportsman with a passion for life and a wonderful sense of humor. He was a compassionate and generous person who loved his family and friends, and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
He leaves by his wife, Amy Emmel of Pompano Beach; his mother, Charlotte Emmel of Silver Lake; his brother, Christopher Emmel, of North Conway; his daughter, Kimberley Mason of Chesapeake, Va.; a niece and three nephews of Midlothian, Va. His father, Robert A. Emmel, died in 1981.
A memorial service will be held in the Madison Church in Madison, at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 21. Burial will follow in the Gilman Cemetery in Madison. The Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway is in charge of arrangements.
Robert J. Emmel

MADISON - There will be a memorial service on Saturday, May 21, at 2 p.m. in the Madison Church in Madison for Robert J. Emmel, who was killed by a hit and run driver in Pompano Beach, Fla. on Jan. 15.
He grew up in the Boston area and, before moving to Florida where he was the senior vice president of the Financial Store in Boca Raton, he lived in Wolfeboro and was president of Century 21 Dockside Realty.
He is survived by his wife Amy Emmel of Pompano Beach, Fla.; his mother Charlotte Emmel of Silver Lake; his brother Christopher Emmel of Wolfeboro and his daughter Kimberley Mason of Chesapeake, Va. He was predeceased in 1981 by his father, Robert A. Emmel.
The memorial service will be followed by his burial in the Gilman Cemetery in Madison.

David F. Bye
Died: Friday, January 14, 2005
Age: 45
Former Carroll County Sheriff's Deputy
WOLFEBORO - David F. Bye, 45, of Bryant Road passed away suddenly Friday, Jan. 14, in Wolfeboro. He was a lifelong resident of Wolfeboro.
He was born Dec. 23, 1959, the son of Donald H. and Virginia (Stockton) Bye, of Ossipee. He attended Carpenter School in Wolfeboro, and later graduated from Kingswood Regional High School in Wolfeboro, class of 1977.
He attended Massassoit Community College and received a degree in criminal justice. He was also a member of the 47th New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Academy. He served as a cadet and deputy with the Carroll County Sheriff's office, a police officer with the Wakefield Police Department, and on the N.H. Gaming Enforcement Commission. After his retirement from the sheriff's office he began a landscaping business in Wolfeboro, which he operated for the past 10 years.
He was a past member of the N.H. Police Association. He coached for several years with the Wolfeboro/Tuftonboro Little League and sponsored the "Red Sox," the 2004 Cal Ripken Baseball League champions in Wolfeboro.
He lived for his children, family and friends, and he gave of himself to his community and profession.
He will be greatly missed by his dearest friend, Lisa Randall of Wolfeboro, and his children, Andrea and Andrew Bye of Wolfeboro.
He is also survived by parents Donald H. and Virginia (Stockton) Bye, of Ossipee; his sisters: Diane Balser, of Brookfield; Darlene Towle, of Rochester; and Dawn Amico, of Danvers, Mass.; his paternal grandmother Ruth Bye, of Danvers; many nieces and nephews, and lifelong friend Randy Hooper.
Calling hours were Monday from at the Lord Funeral Home, in Wolfeboro. Funeral services were Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the First Christian Church, North Main Street, Wolfeboro. A spring burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Wolfeboro.
