William F. Hardy
Died: Monday, February 07, 2005
Age: 79

ALTON - William F. Hardy, age 79 of Spruce Drive in Alton, died Monday Feb. 7, at home.

He had lived in Alton for many years, formerly on Alton Mountain and on Stockbridge Corner Road.

A United States Army Veteran, he was a member of the American Legion, Post No. 7 in Rochester, and was active with the Claude R. Batchelder Post #72 of the American Legion in Alton. He was also a member of the VFW.

There are no known survivors in his family. He leaves his dear friends, including: Patty and "Woody" Woodland, Alden Brown, Mal Simonds, Warren Zitzow, and his dog Mushie.

A Memorial Service will be held next Thursday evening, Feb. 15, at Peaslee Alton Funeral Home, 12 School Street in Alton, at 7 p.m. American Legion Post #7 Chaplain Richard Groat will do the invocation at 6:45 p.m. There will be a calling hour beginning at 6 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will be in the spring at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.

W. David Edwards
Died: Saturday, April 09, 2005
Age: 75

WOLFEBORO - W. David Edwards died April 9 in Wolfeboro after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born Feb. 2, 1930 in Rochester, N.Y., he was the beloved husband of Glenna (Morrow) for 53 years, and the treasured father of Lucy and George Awiszus; Julie and Bob Bushway; Deb and Joe Kerwin; and Linda and Steve Rowley. He was also the beloved grandfather of Stephanie, Kimberly, Kristi, Leigha, Kelsie, Katie, Lexie, George, Jack and Ethan; and the brother of Janet Edwards of Rochester, N.Y.

His profession was in secondary education, beginning his teaching career in Orleans, Mass. Throughout his entire career, he was a committed and devoted mentor to children through his teaching and coaching responsibilities. Having brought soccer to Cape Cod, this became an important part of his connection with students.

He then moved his family to Pittsford, N.Y., and retired as Asst. Superintendent in 1985, and moved to Wolfeboro in 1994.

He was a former Rotarian, a member of Sigma Chi, and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Caregivers. He was an active member of First Congregational Church and very involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren. His many loves included boating, camping, woodworking, writing, the ocean (especially Cape Cod) and his constant love for family and friends. So many lives have been forever richly blessed by his love and grace, strength and courage.

A memorial service was held April 12 at the First Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy would be greatly appreciated by making donations to either the Southern Carroll County Hospice Group, Box 1620, Wolfeboro, N.H. 03894, or a memorial scholarship fund at the First Congregational Church in David's name (115 South Main St., PO Box 913, Wolfeboro, N.H. 03894).
William F. Krauss
Died: Wednesday, April 06, 2005
Age: 36

Wolfeboro - William F. Krauss, 36 of Sewall Rd., died April 6, in Lewiston, Maine, due to a motor vehicle accident in Milton.

Born in Boston, Mass. Nov. 22, 1968, the son of Raymond and Jane (Trostel) Krauss, he lived most of his life in Sharon, Mass., moving to Wolfeboro four years ago from Wakefield.

Krauss graduated from St. Anselm College in Manchester and worked in investment sales for Nuveen Investment. He was a communicant of St Katharine Drexel Church in Wolfeboro where he taught eighth grade CCD, was a member of the Wolfeboro Gentlemen's Basement Air Pistol League, served on the Wolfeboro Zoning Board, was very active with the Cornerstone Christian Academy in Wolfeboro, was a cyclist and cross country skier competing in the Mt. Washington Hill Climb Bike Race, volunteered with the Wolfeboro Cross Country Ski Association and supported the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

He was a devoted father and husband to his wife Elizabeth (Minogue) Krauss, son Charles William Krauss, and two daughters Caroline Rose Krauss and Bridget Anne Krauss all of Wolfeboro. He also leaves his parents of Sharon, Mass., a brother Timothy Krauss of Somerville, Mass., a sister Stephanie Verdun of Sharon, Mass., and his paternal grandmother Rose (Malomo) Krauss of Randolph, Mass.

Calling hours were Sunday, April 10, at the Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wolfeboro.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, April 11, at St Katharine Drexel Church on South Main Street in Wolfeboro

Jean Harwood Hawkins Ruble
Died: Tuesday, April 05, 2005
Age: 89

FAIRHOPE, Ala. - Jean Harwood Hawkins Ruble, 89, of Fairhope, Ala, died April 5. Born in Salem, Ohio on March 21, 1916, daughter of James Archibald and Lessie Louise (Dow) Harwood, she attended Centenary College in Louisiana and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Miami University (Ohio) 1938 in voice. She was a member of the Chi Omega sorority.

She married Eugene Thomas Hawkins of East Patchogue, Long Island, N.Y., in 1944. They started raising two of their three daughters while living in Stony Creek, Va. and he started a career with Johns Manville.

In 1952, the Hawkins moved to New Jersey and started frequenting the Jersey shore in the summer. She and her husband eventually bought a cottage and a sailboat, becoming charter members of the Cedar Point Yacht Club (later Cedar Mar Marina) in Toms River. In addition to sailing, she could be seen cheering on her daughters during swim meets. She spent the next 20 years living in North Plainfield and Bound Brook, N.J., where she was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a key soloist in their adult choir. She enjoyed golf, oil painting, travel and hosted foreign exchange students from Guatemala and Chile.

After her husband died, she moved to Wolfeboro in 1972 where she enjoyed golf, bridge and boating on Lake Winnipesaukee for five years.

In 1978, she moved to Whispering Pines, N.C., and met her future husband, Captain Harold Eustis Ruble ("Chub"), Retired USN. They spent 10 wonderful years together enjoying family, friends, golf, bridge, and travel. After her husband died in 1990, she moved to Fairhope, Ala. to be closer to family.

Other than the above-mentioned pastimes, you could always hear her singing a song while either playing the piano, listening to other music or a cappella.

She is survived by her three daughters, Mary Ann (Hawkins) Gilcreast of Daphne, Ala., Louise Georgiana (Hawkins) Burford of Montrose, Ala., and Jane Harwood (Hawkins) Dodge of Newmarket; two sons-in-law, Dr. David Burford and J. Hovey Dodge; three grandsons Edward and Phillip Gilcreast and Aaron Burford; two nieces, Alice Fuhrmann Tiedemann of Long Island and Nancy Harwood Bulk of Middletown, R.I., and grandnieces and nephews.

A memorial service was scheduled at the Bayview Funeral Home, Fairhope, Ala. Burial will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery, East Patchogue, Long Island.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Covenant Hospice, 6475 Van Buren St., Suite 201, Daphne, Alabama, 36526 would be appreciated.

William Russell Hayman
Died: Tuesday, April 05, 2005
Age: 76

WOLFEBORO - William Russell Haymnan, Jr., 76, of Gulfport, Fla., formally of Wolfeboro, died April 5 at Kindred Hospital Bay Area-St. Petersburg from a short illness. Born and raised in Lynn, Mass., he served honorably in the United States Navy between 1948 and 1956 where, upon his discharge, he became employed with New England Telephone and Telegraph, where he worked for 25 years. Upon his retirement from AT&T, he ventured into a successful restaurant business at Father Johns Pub with Fred Warren of Wolfeboro. In 1987, he formally retired and made his winter home in Gulfport, Fla. Hayman, an avid fisherman, would return to Wolfeboro each spring before the ice broke on Lake Winnipesaukee.

A long-standing member and Past Master of Mount Carmel Lodge A.F.&A.M. Lynn, Mass., and a member of the American Legion Claude R. Batchelder Post of Alton, he was from an era when a handshake or his word was a bond, and his smile and friendship were everlasting.

He leaves his loving wife of 55 years, Marion; a daughter, Susan E. Strout, of Alton; four sons: Robert and his wife Gayle of Portsmouth, Va.; Joseph of Wolfeboro; Richard and his wife Karen of Center Tuftonboro; Michael Hayman of Tuftonboro; and a sister, Marilyn Wilson of Salem, Mass. He was also blessed with seven grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at All Saints Church in Wolfeboro at 2 p.m. April 30. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriners Children's Hospital Transportation Fund.

Florence A. Welch
Died: Saturday, April 02, 2005
Age: 78

FARMINGTON - Florence A. Welch, 78, formerly of E. Grove Street in Farmington, died Saturday morning, April 2, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.

Born April 13, 1926 in Gilmanton, a daughter of the late George D. and Mildred E. (Page) Potter, she was raised on the family farm, "The Potter Farm" in Gilmanton. Welch had lived in Farmington since 1954, where she and her husband raised their family, before recently having moved to SunBridge of Wolfeboro.

The widow of Charlie H. Welch, who died in 1989, she was a loving mother and homemaker. She enjoyed sewing, mending, embroidery and gardening. And she was also famous for her chocolate chip cookies.

She leaves six children: Susan M. Bergeron of Manchester, Mary L. Glidden of Alton, Linda A. LeClair of Farmington, April J. Miliner of Sanbornville, Bruce D. Welch of Middleton and Jean M. Lanciano of Rochester; nine grandchildren; a brother, Robert L. Potter of Gilmanton; and three sisters: Dorothy Littlefield and Bernice Potter, both of Gilmanton, and Ruth Chase of Pembroke. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Geddes of Oregon.

Calling hours were Monday evening at Peaslee Funeral Home in Farmington. A funeral service was held Tuesday at the Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Douglas Andrews, pastor, officiating. Burial will in the spring at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Farmington. In lieu of flowers, contribution may be made in her memory to the Activity Fund at the SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation 39 Clipper Drive Wolfeboro, NH 03894.

Madeline Thurston
Died: Friday, April 01, 2005
Age: 90

CENTER OSSIPEE - Madeline (Eldridge) Thurston, 90, formerly of Moultonville Road, passed away April 1, 2005, at the Mountain View Nursing Home in Ossipee. She was a native and lifelong resident of Ossipee, the daughter of the late Lafeyett and Myrtle Eldridge.

During World War II Thurston was employed at Pratt & Whitney and later worked at Maloon's Knitting Mills in Wolfeboro. She also worked at the Frankson's Furniture Company in West Ossipee.

She was a past member of the Center Ossipee Fire Department, Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the Moultonville United Methodist Church. Thurston was the widow of the late Parker Thurston who passed away in January of 1996.

She is survived by her son, Eugene P. Thurston and his wife Elise of Rochester; a daughter, Frances Hammond of Tamworth; and a grandson, Harry Thurston of Rochester.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held in the Chickville Cemetery in the spring.

The Lord Funeral Home, Center Ossipee, is in charge of arrangements.

Timothy E. Bilodeau
Died: Friday, April 01, 2005
Age: 38

MILTON - Timothy E. Bilodeau, "Tim", 38 of Silver Street in Milton, died Friday evening, April 1, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, after a brief illness.

Born Nov. 10, 1966 in Rochester, a son of Richard J. and Barbara A. (Patch) Bilodeau, he attended Nute High School in Milton, where he lived for most of his life. He had lived in Dover for several years.

In the restaurant business, he had worked as a bartender and also as a chef, and had worked at the Friendship Inn in Dover, Howard Johnson's and the Anchorage Inn, both in Portsmouth. He had also been employed as a manager at the Holiday Inn in Portsmouth, and most recently, as a Bartender at Dante's in Barrington.

He was an avid New England Patriots Fan and a Boston Red Sox Fan, and he enjoyed working out.

He leaves his parents, Richard J. and Barbara A. (Patch) Bilodeau; a special friend, Kathy Lewis Cooper and mother of his son, Zackory R. Bilodeau, both of New Durham; a sister, Lisa Marcoux of Middleton. He also leaves seven brothers: Richard R. Bilodeau of Milton, Wayne J. Bilodeau of Rochester, Paul J. Bilodeau of Lebanon, Maine, Ronal J. Bilodeau, James R. Bilodeau, Jay J. Bilodeau and Christian Goodale, all of Milton, as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and his partner of three years, Paul Klotz of West Palm Beach, Fla.

Calling hours and a funeral service were held Tuesday at Peaslee Funeral Home in Farmington. Burial will be in the spring at the Milton Mills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to: Avis Goodwin Community Health Center, 19 Old Rollinsford Road Dover, NH 03820 or Seacoast Cancer Center, 789 Central Avenue, Dover, NH 03820.

George A. "Judd" McWhirter Jr.
Died: Thursday, March 31, 2005
Age: 56

WATERTOWN, Mass. - Funeral services were held Monday, April 4, for George A. "Judd" McWhirter, Jr. McWhirter was born in Cambridge, Mass., son of the late George A. McWhirter, Sr. and Ellen F. (Sheehan) McWhirter. He grew up in Watertown, Mass., graduating from Xavier High School in Concord, Mass, and then attending Bentley College in Waltham, Mass. McWhirter worked in Newton, Mass. for several years as a postal clerk in the Newton Post Office. He spent many summers with his family in Tuftonboro. He died Thursday, March 31, at the Tewksbury Hospital in Tewksbury, Mass. after a long illness, at the age of 56.

Funeral services were held at the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home in Watertown, Mass., followed by a Funeral Mass at Church of St. Patrick. Burial was at Ridgelawn Cemetery. Contributions may be made in McWhirter's memory to the Tewksbury Hospital Patient's Recreation Fund, c/o Deborah Reardon, 365 East St., Tewksbury, Mass. 01876.
