Arthur D. Cullinan
INTERVALE - Arthur D. Cullinan, 71, of Intervale, died May 10, 2000 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland. Born in Boston, the son of Francis and Anna (Hines) Cullinan, he grew up in Dorcester, Mass., and lived in Natick, Mass., for ten years before moving to the Mount Washington Valley in 1972.
Mr. Cullinan graduated from Boston High School of Commerce. He graduated from Bentley School of Accounting in Boston and the University of New Hampshire.
He had been an accountant with S.F. White Company in Boston, owned and operated A.D. Cullinan and Company in Natick, Mass., until 1972. He was business manager for Northern N.H. Mental Health and Developmental Services until 1989.
Mr. Cullinan was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
The family includes his wife of 42 years, Ann (McGrath) Cullinan of Intervale; four sons, Christopher Cullinan of San Francisco; Brian Cullinan of The Woodlands, Texas; David Cullinan of North Conway and John Cullinan of New Hampton; a daughter, Cathleen O'Neill of Federal Way, Wash.; eight grandchildren; a sister, Rita Sheehy of Carver, Mass. and a niece and a nephew.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Mountains Church in North Conway. Burial will be in North Conway Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway.
Ralph E. Noble
POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - Ralph E. Noble, 91, of Pompano Beach died on Tuesday, May 9, 2000. He was a longtime resident of North Conway.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred; brother, Paul Noble; sister-in-law, Grace Robertson; and nephew, Ron Noble.
Alfred E. Swett
ROCHESTER - Alfred E. Swett, 84, of Milton, died May 9, 2000, at the Rochester Manor in Rochester after a long illness.
Born in North Conway, the son of Everton and Ella (Bryant) Swett, he moved to Milton in 1948.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the European Theatre as a medical dispatcher.
Mr. Swett worked for over 20 years as a mechanic at the former Towle's Garage in Rochester.
He was a member of the Milton Community Church and served as a deacon.
Alfred was an avid hunter and fisherman and he enjoyed camping.
The family includes: his wife of 63 years, Dorothy (Robertson) Swett of Milton; three daughters, Mary Ann Moulton of Milton, Geraldine Littler of Plymouth and Susan Reams of Lebanon, Maine; a son, Frederick K. Swett of White River Junction, Vt.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a half-brother, Gordon Kendall of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews, including Jean Rancourt of North Conway.
His sister, Edith S. Jenness, predeceased him in 1981.
Private graveside services will be held in the North Conway Cemetery later. There will be no visiting hours.
The Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway is in charge of arrangements.
Margaret May Brown
FRYEBURG, Maine - Margaret May Brown, 88, formerly of Pequawket Village died Monday, May 8, at the Fryeburg Health Care Center.
She was born in Austin Texas the daughter of James and Etta Campbell and was educated in Texas schools.
She is survived by one daughter, Lynn Moulton of Sweden, Maine; one sister, Rosa Pearson of Escondido, Cal.; one brother, Talbot Campbell of Fulton, Mo.; two grand daughters, Terrie Smith of Bridgton and Christal Gagnon of Lewiston.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the Wood Funeral Home, 12 Warren St. Fryeburg, Maine with the Rev. Richard Male officiating.
David Barnard Henry
MADISON - Memorial Services for David Barnard Henry, 69, of Conway Road, a champion local tennis player, will be held at the Madison Church on Saturday, May 13 at 2 p.m. Henry died of a heart attack on April 16 at Maine Medical Center in Portland Maine.
Interment will be held later at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Mass.
A resident of Madison for more than 40 years, he was a former employee of the U. S. Forest Service. He had previously worked at the Union Warren Savings Bank in Boston.
For a number of years he won the first prize trophy during the Madison Old Home Week tennis tournament. He was a regular Friday evening player at the Cranmore Sport Center as well as on courts in Conway and East Madison during the summer.
Born in New York City, he was the son of federal economist John Jay Henry. His mother, Ruth Hamilton Henry also of Madison, was an art and language teacher at the old Quimby School in Sandwich.
He attended St. Alban's prep school in Washington, D. C., Tokyo American High School in Tokyo, Japan and earned is B. A. from Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.
He was a member of the Madison Historical Society and a regular attendee at Madison's weekly senior lunches. He was a former member of the Trinity Church singles club in Boston.
He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Mary (Henry) Meier and is brother-in-law Joseph Meier, both of Wellesley, Mass.; a nephew and two nieces.
Charles E. Smith Jr.
OSSIPEE - Charles E. Smith Jr., 77, of Pond Road died Tuesday, May 9 at his home. He was born in Ossipee, one of ten children the son of Charles and Charlotte Sawyer Smith.
Smith family moved to this area when he was young and e attended local schools. He was a W.W. II Army Air Force Veteran. For many years he owned and ran a saw mill and logging company, he later worked for the State Highway Department.
His wife Sadie E. Hamilton Smith died last December. He is survived by one daughter Cynthia McKeough of Dover; two step-sons, Roland Watson of Zephyrhills, Fla. and Fred Watson of Rochester; one step-daughter, Patricia Strong of Mississippi; one brother Austin Smith of Center Conway; two sisters Violet Fox and Viola Cram both of Fryeburg; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Pine Grove Cemetery in Fryeburg with the Rev. Violet Eastman officiating.

Brogan John McDowell
TEMECULA, Calif. - Brogan John McDowell, the youngest son of Tim and Katie (Warren) McDowell of Temecula, Calif., died Thursday, April 27, 2000 after an accident in his family's backyard swimming pool.
Brogan, who would have been two years old in June, is survived by his parents, his older brothers Ryan, Taylor, Myles, Morgan, and Kody, his grandmothers Frieda McDowell of Pennsylvania and Willi Warren of Murrieta, Calif. and North Conway, and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins from all over the country. Brogan's life was celebrated in two separate ceremonies, one in his family's front yard for more than 25 small children who were his neighbors and playmates, and another (at the United Methodist Church in Murrieta) on May 1 for his extended family and friends.
The church ceremony was co-preached by Brogan's uncle, the Reverend Dan McDowell. The family donated Brogan's eyes, heart valves, and skin tissue to the San Diego Children's Hospital organ-donor program, and in lieu of flowers would be grateful for donations in honor of Brogan sent to People Helping People, c/o Paradise Chevrolet, 26845 Ynez Street, Temecula, CA 92591, attn: Denny Mighell. David R. "Bump" Phinney
CONWAY - David R. "Bump" Phinney, 76, of Conway, died May 5, 2000, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway following an automobile accident.
Born in Conway, the son of Benjamin and Ora (Sennett) Phinney, he was a lifelong resident of Conway.
Mr. Phinney had worked for the former F.W. Mears Heel Company in Conway. In the 1940s and 1950s, he had been a lifeguard during the winter months in Florida and he had worked for the Tuberculosis Sanitarium in Fairfield, Maine. He also worked for the Conway Highway Department for many years before retiring as assistant foreman.
The family includes a son, Benjamin D. Phinney, of Concord; a brother, Raymond L. Phinney, of Conway; a sister, Dorothy McKinley, of Salem, Ohio; a half-brother, Carroll Phinney, of Payton, Arizona; several nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and a great grand nephew, Seth H. Bailey.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Conway United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Wesley E. Palmer, pastor, officiating. Visiting hours will be today, Monday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway.
Marilyn Virginia (Spiers) Brown
EFFINGHAM - Marilyn Virginia (Spiers) Brown, 71, Of Simon Hill Road, Effingham died May 4, 2000 at Huggins Hospital, Wolfeboro. she was born in Milton, Mass. the daughter of John W. and Emma (Van Wart) Spiers and lived in Lexington, Mass. for many years before moving to Etfingham in Juiy 1995.
Marilyn presided as the school secretary for 30 years at Harrington Elementary School, Lexington, Mass. Upon her retirement to Effingham she participated in many community activities. Her quiet courage, sense of fairness and open mind will be sorelv missed.
she is survived by her beloved husband, George W. Brown, Jr.,
Effingham; son, G. Steven Brown, Hyde Park, Mass. and daughter, Lois P. Cozzi, Leesburg, Va; grandsons, George R. Cozzi III, Nashua, NH and Steven R. Cozzi, Leesburg, Va.
Calling hours will be Saturday, May 6, 2000, 6 to 8 p.m. at Lord Funeral Home, Route 28, Wolfeboro. A prayer service will be held at the end of visitation.

Elizabeth (Hidden) Sutherland
TAMWORTH - Elizabeth (Hidden) Sutherland, 88, of Great Hill Road, died May 4, 2000 at the Eliot Hospital in Manchester, N.H. She was a native of Tamworth the daughter of the Late S. Harold and Helen (Bassen) Hidden of Tamworth and had lived in North Hampton and Manchester for several years. She was a graduate of Danvers High School, Danvers Mass and the Keene Normal School where she received an Bachelor of Education degree. She taught as an elementary education teacher in Chesterfield before moving back to Tamworth in 1952. She later moved to West Hampton where she taught until 1956 when she moved to Manchester where she taught in the school system for 21 years, retiring back to Tamworth in 1978.
She was the widow of the late Donald M. Sutherland. Mrs. Sutherland was a member of the Tamworth Congregational Church as well as the Tamworth Historical Society. and numerous other clubs and organizations.
Mrs. Sutherland loved the outdoors, annually climbing Mount Chocorua until the age of 81. She also played the piano for square dances for many years.
She is survived by her children Donald H Sutherland of Nashua; Edward H Sutherland of Worcester, Mass.; James O. Sutherland, Goffstown and Dorothy Sutherland Kelley of Amherst. She has 16 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, two sisters, Kathleen Louise Bourgault of Belmont and Frances Roberts, Springfield, Vt. and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours for Mrs. Sutherland will be Sat. 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee. A funeral service will be Sunday 3 p.m. at the Tamworth Congregational Church, Tamworth. Rev. Richard Russell Pastor will officiate. Burial will be in the Ordination Rock Cemetery, Tamworth.
