Franklyn L. Johnson
Died: Tuesday, December 27, 2005
Age: 93
WOLFEBORO - Franklyn L. Johnson died peacefully on Dec. 27 in the company of his family.
Born July 19, 1912 in Irvington, N.J. to Frank and Emilie Johnson, he lived in N.J. and Mass. for many years, retiring to Wolfeboro in 1973. He leaves his wife of 66 years, Doris, as well as three children: son Lynn and his wife Gail of Wolfeboro; son Bruce of Phoenix, Ariz., and daughter Judy Dudgeon and her husband Dan of Acton, Mass. He also leaves a daughter-in-law Linda Johnson of Tuftonboro, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his brother Arthur.
Frank worked for Western Electric Company for approximately 45 years, retiring as Director of Purchasing for the corporation. He was a very versatile man who excelled at and relished the work of a corporate manager, but was equally as skilled working with his hands. He contracted and built many houses over the years, and helped and taught his children how to maintain, repair or rebuild everything in and around a house.
He loved people, he loved talking to people, he loved helping people, and he was extremely civic-minded. During his entire lifetime, wherever he lived, he served on many town and church boards. During his 32 years in Wolfeboro, he served as a trustee at Brewster Academy, where he was Clerk of the Works for construction of a major campus building. He served for many years as a trustee at Huggins Hospital, and he had been an active Rotarian until recently.
While not uncomfortable in a boardroom environment, his preference and his greatest joy was "working" and "doing" things where he could physically see the results of his efforts. He was the ultimate handyman and could fix or build just about anything, to which his family, friends and neighbors will attest. When he was younger he would be seen setting up and wiring the many sidewalk Christmas trees in town, as well as selling trees with the Rotary Club, His love of children was demonstrated by his often building items needed for the Wolfeboro Day Care Center and his volunteer work as a remedial reading helper at Crescent Lake School. For many years, he contributed significant time and effort helping with setup and breakdown for the annual Huggins Hospital fair. He was a major participant in the development and construction of the Russell Chase Bridge Falls Path, and did most of the electrical work on that project. He was actively involved in the planning, construction and administration of both The Ledges and Christian Ridge retirement communities. One of his most recent major contributions to the community was his active involvement as a Huggins Hospital Trustee in the planning and construction of Sugar Hill Retirement Community. It was perhaps fitting that he was able to spend his last 4-1/2 years enjoying the benefits of living in one of "his" cottages at Sugar Hill; he was especially happy to have a large cellar there where he could store and organize his lifetime collection of tools and related parts and paraphernalia. All of is family members will fondly remember how proud he was to take them "down in the cellar" in order to show them how he was getting all of his things organized for us. And perhaps most of all, is family will cherish and remember his wonderful sense of humor; he loved to make a joke and to laugh and he continued to do that right into his final days.
Frank was a very talented, loving man who gave generously of his time and talents to the community, and he will be greatly missed by his family. There will be a private service for immediate family only. Calling hours were held at Baker-Gagne Funeral Home in Wolfeboro Friday, Dec. 30. The family requests no flowers and suggests that donations may be made to Huggins Hospital, The First Congregational Church in Wolfeboro, or the charity of one's choice.
