William H. Davenport
Died: Thursday, April 14, 2005
Age: 82

WOLFEBORO - William H. "Bill" Davenport, of Wolfeboro Common and Spring Hill, Florida passed away on Thursday, April 14, at his home under the care of his wife and Hospice.

He was born on Oct. 7, 1921, in Newark, N.J. and graduated from Nutley High School in 1939. He then graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. in 1943. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.

After college, he was selected as one of the top chemists in the country to work on the Manhattan Project at Princeton University. He was awarded a Medal of Honor by the Army Corp of Engineers.

He then went on to become a research chemist for Monsanto Chemical Company in Oak Ridge, Tenn. His career continued as an executive and research scientist for Chase Brass and Copper Company in Waterbury, Conn. He ended his professional career at Kinnecott Copper Company in Cleveland, Ohio. He was world renowned for his research in Rhenium and received many patents for his work.

In 1970, he and his first wife, Virginia moved to Clearwater Beach and purchased the Port-Vue Motel. After her death he met and married Mary and they moved to Timber Pines in Spring Hill to enjoy the retirement years playing golf, bridge and traveling. He had a passion for solving Sunday crossword puzzles of the NY Times and Boston Globe.

In 1995, Bill and Mary moved to Wolfeboro Common where they summered each year.

Survivors include his wife of the last 15 years, Mary, a son, Geoffrey (Millie) Davenport; a daughter Deborah (Tim) Dennis; Mary's daughter Stoney (Skip) Dvornik; a brother, Carlton (June); a sister Barbara (Hurley) Butler; a sister in law, Lois Davenport; grandchildren, Bryony, Devon, Teale, Gracie, Truman, Morgan, Carter, and William H Davenport IV; nephews Aaron, Scott, and Dave and a niece Donna.

A gathering to honor and celebrate Bill's life was held in Spring Hill on April 18 with Pastor Skip Dvornik officiating.

There will be a memorial service at the First Congregational Church in Wolfeboro on June 20 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jim Christensen officiating.

John P. O'Grady
Died: Tuesday, April 12, 2005
Age: 48

CHATSWORTH, Ga. - John P. O'Grady, 48, died on April 12, as a result of severe injuries sustained in a car accident near his home in Chatsworth, Ga.

He was an alumnus of Kingswood High School (class of 1974). He continued his education at Plymouth State College (now Plymouth State University), and then at Flight Safety Academy, where he received his pilot qualifications.

He flew for Airborne Express and later progressed as Captain for UPS.

For the past five years, O'Grady devoted his life to fund-raising for the Epilepsy Foundation and for United Way, after having become disqualified to fly due to a seizure. He also counseled epileptic children at the foundation's summer camps.

His father, John L. O'Grady died in 1976. He leaves two sons, John L. and Dan O'Grady from Dayton, Ohio; his mother and her husband, Eva and Leonard Madden; a brother, Jim O'Grady and his family in Lebanon, Ohio; two sisters, Juanita Hill and her family in Melvin Village, and "Ree" Haney and her family in Durham.

There was a celebration of his life on Saturday, April 23, at 11 a.m. at Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Epilepsy Foundation would be appreciated.

Edna Kennard
Died: Monday, April 11, 2005
Age: 84

Center Ossipee - Edna (Lord) Kennard, 84, of Huckins Street, passed away Monday, April 11, 2005 at SunBridge Care in Wolfeboro.

Edna was a native and lifelong resident of Ossipee, the daughter of the late John A and Laura Mae (Knight) Lord. She graduated from Ossipee High School and later received a Bachelor's degree in Education from Keene State Teachers' College, Keene.

After graduating, she taught elementary education in Freedom and Ossipee, and later became Principal of the Ossipee Elementary School. She left Ossipee to teach Title 1 Math in the Rochester School System and later served as Principal at the McClelland School in Rochester. While working at the McClelland School she continued her graduate studies at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, before leaving in 1970. She continued her teaching in Alton before accepting a position at the Carpenter Elementary School in Wolfeboro. She retired from teaching in June 1981.

Kennard loved to play golf and was a past member of the Indian Mound Gold Club in Center Ossipee. She was also a member of the Calvin Topliff Chapter #18, O.E.S.

She was predeceased by her husband Benjamin F. Kennard and their daughter Laura Kennard. She leaves her brother Rolland W. Lord, West Ossipee, and her sistr Charlotte Boise, Hooksett, and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Friday 6-8 p.m. at the Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Ctr. Ossipee. Funeral services will be Saturday, 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, Rt. 16B, Ctr. Ossipee. Rev. David Morgan will officiate. Burial will be in the Ossipee Valley Cemetery, West Ossipee.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Ossipee Public Library, Ctr. Ossipee, NH 03814 or the Activities Fund at SunBridge of Wolfeboro, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.

Eva Mary Messina
Died: Monday, April 11, 2005
Age: 97

WOLFEBORO - Eva Mary (DiVirgilio) Messina, 97, of Wolfeboro, formerly of Lynn, Mass., died Monday, April 11, in SunBridge of Wolfeboro, after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late Angelo Messina, and the daughter of the late Vincenzo and Maria Annia (Barboni) DiVirgilio. Born and raised in Lynn, she lived most of her life in Lynn, before moving to Wolfeboro in 1998. She was a graduate of Lynn English High School and worked in management for F.W. Woolworth from 1924-1938 and Klemm's Bakery, Ed's Food Shop on Chestnut Street in Lynn from 1949-1970.

She was a regular communicant of St., Pius V Church in Lynn from her teenage days up to the early 1990s when she could no longer drive. She attended novenas, missions and first Fridays.

She was actively involved in her prime with the Salem (Mass.) Lodge of Moose, the Holy Family Church Bowling League, the Aborn School PTA, the Lynn YMCA and Camp Rotary. She and her husband traveled with the St. Stephen's Senior Citizens for a number of years.

She was a lifelong resident of East Lynn up to 1998, when she moved to the SunBridge, formerly the Clipper Nursing Home in Wolfeboro, to be close to her son. For more than 50 years, she lived on Chatham Street; for the 10 years prior to her move to New Hampshire, she lived at the Stadium Condo's on Locust Street. She is the aunt of the former Mayor Albert Di Virgilio. In January of 1988, she celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary with a lavish party at the General Glover in Swampscott, Mass. only to lose her husband Angelo the next September.

She leaves a son, Vincent Messina and his wife Carol of Wolfeboro; her sister, Lenora Gallo of Salem, Mass.; her brother-in-law Ralph Perlino of Lynn; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late James and Primo DiVirgilio, Aida Palumbo, Emily Parker and Lona Perlino.

Her funeral will be held from the Solimine, Landergan & Richardson Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Route 129), Lynn, today, April 14, at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Pius V Church in Lynn at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Lynn.

Doris C. Sawyer
Died: Saturday, April 09, 2005
Age: 88

ALTON - Doris C. Sawyer, 88, of Alton, died at her home April 9. She was born April 26, 1916 in Fitchburg, Mass.

She was a much-loved foster grandparent for 20 years at Alton Elementary School.

She leaves include her husband of 64 years, Julian Duke Sawyer; her three daughters: Shirley Hess of Newark, Ohio, Joan and husband Paul Cunningham of Worthington, Ohio, and Carol and husband Ted Geraghty of Plymouth. She also leaves her 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, her 17 siblings predeceased her.

A memorial service was held at Peaslee Funeral Home in Alton Tuesday, April 12, with Fr. Richard Wegman officiating. Burial will be arranged at a later date by the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to: VNA-Hospice of Southern Carroll County & Vicinity, PO Box 1620, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.

Loretta "Rett" Soucy Burnham
Died: Friday, August 05, 2005
Age: 70

WOLFEBORO - Loretta "Rett" Soucy Burnham, 70, of Santis Way, Wolfeboro and Sarasota, Fla. died Aug. 5 at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro after a brief illness.

Burnham was born November 10, 1934 in Sanbornville, daughter of the late Donat and Marion (Gagnon) Soucy.

Burnham, fondly known to all as "Rett," attended Nute High School in Milton and upon graduation in 1952, she attended Keene State College. She was a member of the Newman Club for four years while attending KSC.

She is survived by her husband John "Jack" A. Burnham, whom she met at Keene State College. Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in teaching, they married in 1955. This June, the Burnhams celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Burnham was a dedicated teacher, she taught in one of New Hampshire's last one-room schoolhouses in Stoddard many, many years ago, in a two-room schoolhouse in Washington (N.H.) and was a second grade teacher at Tuftonboro School for 20 years, until her retirement in 1994. On retirement, she worked part time summers at The Casino Gift Shop.

For many years, she and her husband made their homes in Wolfeboro and Hampton Beach, later Hampton Beach and Siesta Key Sarasota, Fla. where they loved to walk the beaches, read, play bingo and spend time with cherished friends. Recently, they were lured back to having a home again in Wolfeboro, where she loved to garden, spend time with her children and grandchildren who all live close by.

Burnham leaves John A. Burnham, her husband of 50 years; three children, Denise Earle of Wolfeboro, Dawne Mortenson of Grantham and Dean Burnham of Franklin; and five grandchildren, Benjamin, Brian, Sarah, Alexandra, and Ashley, whom she adored and who will miss her immensely.

A celebration of her life was held Tuesday, Aug. 9 at St. Katharine Drexel Church in Alton.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions to Amyloid Research Fund, Boston University School of Medicine, 715 Albany Street K-503 Boston, MA 02118. Memorial Contribution Cards are available from the family.

The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Wolfeboro is in charge of the arrangements.

Salvatore "Sam" Catalfo
Died: Thursday, August 04, 2005
Age: 85

SOMERSWORTH - Salvatore "Sam" Catalfo of Sherwood Glen, Somersworth, died Thursday, August 4. Born on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1919, in the Village of Salmon Falls, now Rollinsford, he was the son of Alfio (Sr.) and Vincenza Catalfo. He was a devoted family man, the beloved husband for 56 years of Patricia W. Catalfo, and a loving father to their daughter, Nancy (Catalfo) Davis and her husband, David Davis, Cherokee Drive, Dover, and to their son, Alfred (Fred) W. Catalfo and his wife, Jane, of Durham Road, Dover.

Catalfo attended local grammar schools and then Berwick Academy. His education was interrupted by his service in the United States Navy during World War II. He served on the USS Scott Brown in the Mediterranean. After having served honorably, he was discharged and later graduated from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro.

A lifelong avid Yankees fan he met another Yankee fan, his wife, Pat, while they both listened to the game on a storefront radio in Wolfeboro. They married on September 8, 1948. They left for Tuscaloosa where Sam attended the University of Alabama. He later attended the University of New Hampshire. His interest was geography and he remained current on the subject all of his life.

After the birth of their daughter, Nancy, prior to their son, Fred's birth, Catalfo was called back into the Navy and served again in the Korean War, stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. Twice he answered the call to duty for his country during wartime

Prior to his retirement he was a supervisor at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and was former president of the laborers union there. He was also a former president/manager of little league teams in Dover. He was also an avid cribbage player and a member of the St. Jean Baptiste.

Catalfo took great pride in watching his three grandsons, Derek Davis of Boston, Mass., Christopher and Corey Catalfo of Durham Road, Dover, grow up. There is nothing that their Papa would not do for them.

In addition to the Yankees and sports, Catalfo loved the land and gardening. He was known for his garden with its bountiful harvest. In later years, he enjoyed gourmet cooking, always getting new ideas from TV cooking shows and new cookbooks.

Catalfo leaves three sisters, Mrs. Mary (Catalfo) Gilbert, and her husband, Edward, of Rollinsford; Mrs. Frances (Catalfo) Morang of Rollinsford, and Mrs. Ida (Catalfo) McClendon of Rollinsford; one brother, Attorney Alfred Catalfo, Jr., and his wife, Attorney Gail Catalfo of Dover, as well as several nephews and nieces. He also leaves very special friends, Dean and Elaine Gould of Somersworth, Joe Pomerleau of Gonic, and Al Moreau of Dover. He was predeceased by his brother, Joseph A Catalfo, of Rollinsford.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, Aug. 8 at St. Mary Church in Dover with Rev. Fritz Cerullo, OSA, pastor, as celebrant. At Catalfo's request, he was buried Monday with his fellow comrades at the New Hampshire Military Cemetery in Boscawen with committal prayers and military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to Dover High School Baseball Team, C/O Peter Wotton, AD, 25 Alumni Drive, Dover, NH 03820 or to the charity of one's choice.
