William W. Barnard
Senior Vice President of Juran Institute
STAMFORD, Conn. - Mr. William W. Barnard, 69, died on June 13, 2004 at the Stamford Hospital in Stamford, Conn.
Mr. Barnard was born in Medford, Maine on August 30, 1934 the son of the late Everett Barnard and Beatrice Towne.
Mr. Barnard was the Senior Vice President of Juran Institute from 1986 to the present. Before that, he received his B.S. from the University of Mass., his MS from the University of Mass., and his PhD in Philosophy of Higher Education at the University of Michigan.
Mr. Barnard leaves his wife, Katherine, two daughters, Amy Barnard of L.A., Calif. and Jennifer Barnard of Stamford, Conn., and a son, Stephen Gregory Barnard of Stamford, Conn. He also leaves two grandchildren, his sister Priscilla Keeler, of Lexington, Mass, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life ceremony will take place and friends may call at Mr. Barnard’s family home in Wolfeboro on Saturday, June 19 at 2 p.m. The family has requested memorial contributions be made to Loon Preservation Committee, PO Box 604, Moultonboro, NH 03254.

Desmond N. Douglas
Veteran, involved in genealogy
ALTON - Desmond N. Douglas, Sr., age 72, of Spruce Lane in Alton, died on Tuesday June 15, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.
Born January 6, 1932 in Rochester, he was a son of the late Charles and Mona (Hough) Douglas. He had resided in this area all of his life.
A United States Army Veteran of the Korean War, he was a self-employed Roofing Contractor.
Douglas was actively involved with Genealogy.
He leaves seven children: Leah and Kathleen Douglas, both of Dover; Arthur Douglas of Alton; Bruce Douglas of Salisbury, Mass.; Denzil (Dan) Douglas; Desmond N. Douglas, Jr. of Alton; and Gavin Douglas of Rochester. He also leaves nine grandchildren; a sister, Betty Carlson of Strafford; a brother, Charles Douglas of Middleton; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are today (June 17) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Peaslee Alton Funeral Home, 12 School Street in Alton. A Funeral will be held on Friday June 18, at 10 a.m. at the Community Church of Alton on Church Street, with Rev. Dwight V. Meader, officiating. Interment will follow at New Riverside Cemetery on Route 28S in Alton.

Robert Thornton Rollins
Postal carrier, painter, storyteller
ALTON BAY - Robert Thornton Rollins, age 92, of Route 11D in Alton Bay, died on Sunday June 13, at SunBridge Care in Wolfeboro, after a period of failing health.
Born May 2, 1912 in Alton, eldest son of the late Harry M. and Dorothy (Sellers) Rollins, he was raised in Alton and was a graduate of Alton High School, Class of 1930. He resided in Alton most of his life.
Rollins was a postal carrier for many years, and was also the owner of Robert T. Rollins, Painting Contractor, having painted many homes in the local area.
An avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt and was a fly fisherman. Rollins was well versed as a raconteur, telling stories from his lifetime.
Married to the late Frances (Jones) Rollins of Farmington for 52 years, who pre-deceased him in 1989, he was also pre-deceased by his brother: Steven W. Rollins in 2000.
He leaves his sister, Gertrude L. Griffin of Alton, and several nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Service will be held on Friday June 18, at 2 p.m. at Pine Grove Cemetery in Farmington. Family and friends are welcome to the service. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations, may be made in his memory to the Gilman Library, Main Street, Alton, NH 03809. Arrangements are in the care of Peaslee Funeral Home, 24 Central St. Farmington, NH 03835.

Sarah Jane Tanner
Loving and devoted mother
WAKEFIELD - Sarah Jane Tanner died on June 7, 2004 after a brief illness.
She was born in Wakefield, Nov. 26, 1922 to Charles and Blanche Fifield.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd (Jigger) Tanner. She leaves two daughters Blanche Tanner, of Farmington, and Betty Tanner, of Union. Other family members include her sister Louise Littlefield and brother Francis Fifield, both of Union. Her extended family includes many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her beloved cat “Sugar.”
She worked many years in various factories before retiring to enjoy time with her family. She was a member of the Union Congregational Church and the Reunion Grange. She enjoyed playing the piano, singing, sewing and gardening.
She also collected poems and quotes from a variety of sources. One such selection follows and the theme summarizes her approach to life. She befriended everyone, and was generous with her thoughts and spirit.
A Single Flower
“The world will never notice me,” He said, quite aggravated…, Certain that his daily work, Was unappreciated.
And then he saw, beside a road, Dusty, hard and bare, A single flower blooming…, And he dug it up with care.
God had spoken on the roadway, Through a flower, small and gay…, “It isn’t where you’re planted, But how you bloom each day.”
In lieu of flowers, her daughters request donations be made to the Guillain-Barre’ Syndrome Foundation International, P.O. Box 262, Wynnewood, Pa. 19096.
A memorial service was held on Thursday, June 10, at the Union Congregational Church on Main Street in Union with the Rev. John Simpson, pastor officiating.
Arrangements are in the care of Peaslee Funeral Home 24 Central St., Farmington, N.H., 03835. .

Charles S. Tarr
Known for clock repair and restoration
WOLFEBORO – Charles S. Tarr, age 89, died June 13 at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro. Born Nov. 21, 1914 in Everett, Mass., he was the son of Mabel Cate Tarr and Orren Ray Tarr. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1936 with a degree in Civil Enginneering, and from Boston University in 1937 with a master’s degree in physics.
As a young man, he worked for the N.H. Highway Department while commuting regularly to Bates College where he was courting his wife to be, Dorothy Tuttle. During WWII he worked at the Boston Navy Yard as a Naval architect. He worked for Westinghouse Electric for 20 years and Fleet Bank in Boston for 13 years. He was a Mason for 68 years and belonged to the Morning Star Lodge in Wolfeboro. He was a lifetime member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors. He retired to Wolfeboro in 1978. His hobby and retirement work was collecting, restoring and repairing early American clocks. Meticulous to the extreme, his ability to repair anything started many clocks ticking again.
Tarr leaves his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Tarr; daughters Deborah Tarr of New York City and Sally Burkholder of Anchorage, Alaska; granddaughter Allison Cate Colbath of Longmont, Colo. and his feline companion, Lilac. His daughter Betsey Tarr Colbath preceded him in death in 1989. He also leaves nieces Jane Mowatt Mitchell, Judy Mowatt Martin, and nephew David Mowatt, the children of his sister, the late Ruth Tarr Mowatt.
A memorial service will be held Friday, June 18 at 2 pm. at the First Congregational Church in Wolfeboro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church or the Lakes RegionHumane Society.

Esther Elizabeth Christofore
Homemaker, antiques dealer
NEW DURHAM - Esther Elizabeth Christofore, age 87, of Valley Road in New Durham, died on Saturday, July 24, at Riverside Rest Home in Dover.
Born October 19, 1916 in West Bridgewater, Mass., she was a daughter of the late David P. and Alma (Neiman) Bergquist. She had resided in New Durham, for 25 years, having previously resided in Farmington and Alton, and East Bridgewater, Mass.
A homemaker and mother, she was the widow of the late William L. Christofore, who died on July 15, 1992.
Christofore and her husband had designed and built custom homes in Massachusetts and New Hampshire; they had also owned and operated the Clutter Barn and Antiques on Route 11 in Alton for many years.
She leaves her son, Richard W. “Rick” and wife Betty Christofore of New Durham; her daughter Marilyn and husband James Tilley of Raymond; three grandsons: Thomas Christofore, Jay and Chris Tilley; four granddaughters: Leisa, Amanda, Cassandra and Roxanne; as well as several great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Service was scheduled for Wednesday, July 28, with Pastor Bruce Brown of The Bible Speaks in So. Berwick, Maine, officiating. Burial will be today, July 29, at 11 a.m. at Central Cemetery in East Bridgewater, Mass.

Henry W. Hutchins
Worked for the Town of Wolfeboro
PLAINFIELD - Henry W. Hutchins, 86, passed away Saturday (July 24) at his home in Plainfield.
He was born August 24, 1917 in Fryeburg, Maine, son of Albert I. and Hazel B. (Charles) Hutchins.
He attended school in Fryeburg. He served in the US Army from 1942 to 1945. On February 4, 1949 he married Eugenia Emma Drew in Newfield, Maine, and they made their home in Wolfeboro.
Mr. Hutchins was employed by the Town of Wolfeboro as a diesel mechanic at the power generating plant and later at the town garage until retiring in 1979.
He was a member of the Odd Fellows in Wolfeboro, was an avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed helping children and was a “full time handyman.” He had lived in Plainfield part-time since 1986, and full time since 2000.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Bonnie Lee Hutchins in 1953, by his wife in 1987, and by one brother and two sisters.
He leaves one daughter, Joy Lee Hutchins of Plainfield; one son, Mark E. Hutchins of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Albert Hutchins of Wolfeboro; five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were scheduled for Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Plainfield Community Church in Plainfield, with Rev. Suellen Leugers, Pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Fryeburg, Maine today, July 29, at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fall Mountain Special Olympics, c/o Brenda Reed, 14 Coral Avenue, Charlestown, NH 03603.

Benjamin F. Jewkes Jr.
Lived in Wakefield for six years
WAKEFIELD - Benjamin F. Jewkes, Jr., age 35, of Plantation Drive in Wakefield, died suddenly on Thursday July 22, 2004 in Strafford.
Born September 19, 1968 in Lowell, Mass., he was the son of Benjamin F. and Karen A. (O’Neill) Jewkes. He had resided in Wakefield for six years, having come from Massachusetts.
He leaves his parents, Benjamin F. and Karen A. Jewkes of Wakefield; his sister, Holly A. Jewkes of Conway; several aunts, uncles, cousins and a dear friend, Wanda Hanscom of Dover.
A Mass of Christian Burial was scheduled for Tuesday July 27, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Church in Sanbornville, with Fr. Edmund A. Babicz, Pastor, as celebrant.
