Hilda Saley
Former senior companion
ALTON - Hilda Mae Saley, 89, of Letter S Road in Alton, died Monday evening March 29, 2004 at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.
She was born April 5, 1914 in Waterville, Maine, daughter of Gordon and Mildred (Jewett) MacIntire. She had resided in Alton since 1976, having come from Reading, Mass.
She had worked as a keypunch operator at the former American Mutual in Wakefield, Mass.
She was a former senior companion in Alton.
She was the widow of Earl D. Saley, who died in 1999.
Family members include three sons, Donald Woodland of Alton, John “Jack” Woodland of Alton and Robert Woodland of Reading, Mass., seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Calling hours are Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Peaslee’s Alton Funeral Home on School Street.
A funeral service will be held Friday April 2, at the Community Church of Alton on Church Street at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Peter Bolster, pastor officiating. Burial will be at the Forest Glen Cemetery in Reading, Mass. .
Sabatina Sinclair
Wife and mother, retired nurse
MELVIN VILLAGE - Sabatina Marie (DePalma) Sinclair, 83, of Brewster Road, Melvin Village, died March 23, 2004, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.
She was born July 14, 1920, in Agawam, Mass., daughter of Louis and Louise (Casiello) DePalma. She had lived in Tuftonboro and Melvin Village for the past 30 years, having previously lived in Westfield, Mass.
She was a graduate of Holyoke Hospital School of Nursing and worked many years as a private duty nurse and for the Health Department at Westfield State College.
She attended the Melvin Village Community Church, was active in the Beacons in Wolfeboro and loved the lake and sunsets.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
Family members include her husband, Lincoln Sinclair of Melvin Village; her daughter, Kathleen Ruscio of Westfield, Mass.; her son, Douglas Sinclair of Alliance, N.C.; her sisters, Esther Lennon of South Hadley, Mass., and Mary Ferrari of Agawam, Mass.; and her two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held March 27 at Melvin Village Community Church.

Donald Weber
Retired firefighter
WOLFEBORO - Donald Weber, 73, a retired firefighter and Korean War veteran, died March 29, 2004, peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.
He was born Jan. 26, 1931, in Chesaning, Mich., son of Edward and Sabine Weber. He settled in Massachusetts after serving in the military and worked as a firefighter in Chelmsford, Mass., for 25 years.
He retired to Wolfeboro, where he continued to work in construction with his good friend, James Libby.
Family members include one son and three daughters, Gary Weber of Gill, Mass., Margaret Simpson of Wolfeboro, Jean Cannon of Portland, Maine, and Julianne Corey of Medford, Mass.; seven grandchildren; his brother, Harold Weber of Chesaning, Mich.; and four sisters, Geneva Princinsky and Doris Sackrider of Chesaning, Alvera Ondrias of Prudenville, Mich., and Rosemary Neitling of East Tiawas, Mich.
Calling hours are today, April 1, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Baker-Gagne Funeral Home, Wolfeboro. A funeral Mass will be held Friday, April 2, at 10 a.m. at St. Katharine Drexel Church.

Donald E. Bertrand
Loved the outdoors
WOLFEBORO - Mr. Donald E. Bertrand Sr. died peacefully at his home in Wolfeboro on Monday June 7, 2004 following a brief illness.
He was born on August 9, 1926 the son of the late Francis X and Anna M (Bergeron) Bertrand. He was raised in Pepperell, Mass.
Prior to his retirement in the early 1990s, Donald, also known as “Bert” and “Pop” by his family, worked for 26 years at Bemis Bros. Bag Company, as a sewing machine mechanic and boiler engineer. He also developed his dream business, Bert’s Sports & Tackle Shop with his devoted wife Joan.
Mr. Bertrand loved his family, and shared his love of the outdoors with them through the years. He and his family enjoyed many years of fishing, hiking, backpacking, camping and raising animals on their farm in Pepperell, Mass. Mr. Bertrand was an avid fisherman, member of the Trout Unlimited, and he was the coordinator of the Float Stocking Program for Trout Unlimited. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus for over 30 years, as well as a Third and Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus.
During his retirement, he enjoyed years of traveling with his wife to various destinations in the United States including Alaska, Fla., N.M., Ariz., and Calif., where he enjoyed rock collecting, making jewelry, fishing, refinishing furniture and working in his workshops in Wolfeboro and in Florida.
He enjoyed spending time with his loving family which includes, six children and seven grandchildren.
Mr. Bertrand was predeceased by two brothers: Raymond and Robert Bertrand; and two sisters, Aurore Bertrand and Jacqueline Durno.
He leaves by his wife of over 57 years, Joan (Malette) Bertrand; three sons, Robert F. Bertrand of Gilford, Christopher J. Bertrand of Dunstable, Mass. and Donald E. Bertrand Jr. of Mass.; three daughters, JoAnn Bertrand of Nashua, Sue A. Porter and Lisa L. Williams both of Wolfeboro, and 7 grandchildren.
Relatives and friends may call at the Marchand Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Pepperell today, June 10, from 4-8p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 11, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, Tarbell St., Pepperell, Mass. Eleanor E. Fielding
Enjoyed cooking, reading and knitting
SANBORNVILLE - Eleanor E. Fielding, age 87, formerly of Forest Street in Sanbornville, died Sunday morning, June 6, 2004 at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, after a brief illness.
Born August 31, 1916 in Lynn, Mass., a daughter of the late Roy and Annie (Halley) Maker, she had resided in Sanbornville since 1972, having come from Lynn, Mass.
Prior to retirement, she was employed at the Union Hospital in Lynn, Mass.; she had also worked at JB Blood in Lynn.
Mrs. Fielding enjoyed cooking, reading and knitting.
The widow of the late Charles E. Fielding and the late Thomas H. Tucker, she leaves her daughter in law, Frances A. Tucker of Brookfield; a granddaughter, Michele and husband Mark Schlageter of Merrimack. She also leaves five sisters: Ruth Green, Anna Negri, Mary Therrien and Barbara Clements, all of Lynn, Mass., and Shirley Hestor of Portsmouth, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Fielding’s son, Thomas R. Tucker, died on Dec. 29, 2000. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Roy and Melvin Maker, and two sisters, Dorothy O’Leary and June Maker.
A Funeral Service was scheduled for Wednesday June 9, at Peaslee Funeral Home with Fr. Edmund A. Babicz, pastor of St. Anthony’s Church, officiating. Burial was at Lovell Lake Cemetery in Sanbornville. Interment will follow at Lovell Lake. Rachel Joy Granger
Insurance counselor
MELVIN VILLAGE - Rachel Joy Granger, 44, of Melvin Village, died June 5, 2004 at Huggins Hospital after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). She was born December 18, 1959 in Lowell, Mass., the daughter of Roland and Theresa Levesque. Rachel graduated from Epping High School and married Stephen D. Granger on June 8, 1984. She and her husband lived in Melvin Village for the past eight years where she enjoyed boating on Lake Winnipesaukee, cross-stitching, and spending time with her animals. Prior to that, Rachel and her husband lived in the Seacoast area.
Rachel was a Certified Insurance Counselor and had been employed as a personal lines insurance agent with J. Clifton Avery Agency prior to her illness. She was a former member of the Board of the Lakes Region Humane Society and was passionate in her love for animals.
In addition to her husband of 20 years she leaves her parents; her sister Diane Levesque of Rochester; her sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Desere Moonsamy of Elliott, Maine; brother-in-law Glen Granger of Cumberland, Maine; in-laws Carol and Gordon Webb of Ossipee; and her beloved dogs, Nikki G., Nicky A., Crissy, and Barney the B.
A private funeral was held on June 8 at the Lord Funeral Home. A celebration of Rachel’s life will be held at the Melvin Village Community Church on June 12 at 2:30 p.m., and all are welcome. Rachel requested that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Lakes Region Humane Society, PO Box 2231, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.
Woodrow Wilson Allard
Odd Fellow for more than 60 years
CONWAY - Woodrow Wilson Allard, 87, of 432 West Side Rd., Conway died June 2, 2004 at his home.
Born in Eaton Center Aug. 1, 1916, son of the late Myron and Ida (Sawyer) Allard he grew up in Eaton Center and has lived in Conway since 1945.
He worked as a logger and dairy farmer for many years He was a member of the Elmwood Grange for more than 50 years, the Farm Bureau for more than 60 years; the Odd Fellows for more than 60 years, a past Grand Master of the Odd Fellows, the Masons, Simadi Shrine Club, ASCS committee for more than 50 years and he was the board of health inspector for the town of Conway for 15 years.
Pre-deceased by a son Paul W. Allard in November of 2003, he leaves his wife of 66 years Catherine (Goudy) Allard, of Conway; a daughter Judy (Allard) Harrison, of Center Ossipee; five grandchildren Joseph Steinbrecher, Jame Steinbrecher, Lorraine Steinbrecher, Carrie Castonguay, Marjorie Warren; six great-grandchildren Amanda Warren, Catherine Castonguay, Miriah Castonguay, Derek Steinbrecher, John Steinbrecher, Lauren Steinbrecher and several nieces and nephews.
Services are private. The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of West Ossipee is in charge of the arrangements.
James Wesley Ames
Loved to drive trucks
FRANKLIN - James Wesley “Wes” Ames, 72, of Spruce Court, died June 9, 2004 at the Franklin Hospital, in Franklin.
Born in South Tamworth on March 3, 1932, he was the son of James R. and Ada E. (Eldridge) Ames.
He grew up in South Tamworth and attended Tamworth Schools. He moved to Bristol in 1978 and has been a resident of Franklin for the past five years.
At an early age, he worked in the logging business with his father and then drove an oil truck for Dube Murphy, in Center Ossipee, for 14 years. After moving to Bristol, he then drove a logging truck, hauling logs for several different loggers in the area, from 1978 until his retirement in 1995.
He loved to drive trucks, travel and visit all his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years Mary E. (Hutchins), of Franklin; one son Alan A. Ames, of Center Ossipee; one daughter Susan Lyndes, of South Tamworth; one stepdaughter Lory Gilpatrick, of New Hampton; four stepsons Michael Plummer, of Ashland, Timothy Dow, of Franklin, Page Dow, of Laconia, and Mark Dow, of Hill; four grandchildren and 11 step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother Ronald Ames, of Moultonborough; one sister Gladys “Sis” Davis, of New Bern, N.C.; two aunts Anna Meyer, of Meredith, and Helen Whiting, of Ossipee; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
There are no calling hours. A graveside service was held in the Riverside Cemetery, Plymouth, on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Rev. Henry Frost, pastor of the Loudon Baptist Church, officiated.
The Mayhew Funeral Home, in Plymouth, is in charge of the arrangements.
