Jacob Burghardt
Former owner of the Granite State News
CENTER SANDWICH - Jacob John (Jack) Burghardt, 78, a former owner and publisher of the Carroll County Independent and the Granite State News, died of cancer Sept. 24, 2002, at his home here.
Born Nov. 1, 1924, in Chicago, Ill., he was a son of Philip and Elizabeth Riegel Burghardt. He graduated from Jones Commercial High School in Chicago and from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill. He also studied at the University of Zurich and the Foreign Service Institute in Washington, D.C.
Enlisting in the Army Air Force in 1943, he served with the 53rd Troop Carrier Wing in Europe and Africa.
After graduating from college, he joined the U.S. Department of State and was sent to Rangoon, Burma (now Yangon, Myanmar). He later transferred to the U.S. Information Agency but remained in Burma, his second assignment being Mandalay. For his work there, he was presented with the Agency’s Meritorious Service Award. He also served in Singapore and in Indonesia, both in Jakarta and Jogjakarta.
In 1958 he became director of Foster Parents Plan in Vietnam, living in Saigon for four years, and in 1963 was named director of the Plan’s program in Greece.
Returning to America in 1967, he assumed the duties of publisher of the Carroll County Independent and Granite State News, retiring in 1997. Sandwich Fair goers will remember his regular appearances on the newspaper’s floats and entries in the fair parade.
He was a past president of the New Hampshire Press Association and the New England Press Association and served on NEPA’s board of directors for several years. He was also a board member of the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors.
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, he organized and led a series of exchange seminars, in India and the United States, for American and Indian journalists and journalism professors, through the auspices of the U.S.-Indo Subcommission on Education and Culture.
In 2002, Jack and Ann Burghardt were named to the New England Press Association’s Community Journalism Hall of Fame.
Always interested in horses and riding, he helped with the Sandwich Saddle-ites 4-H Horse Club in the 1970s. For several years, he was a board member of The Barnstormers Theater in Tamworth, resigning this past summer.
Family members include his wife of 44 years, Ann (Merrow); a daughter, Elisabeth M. Burghardt of Windsor, Vt.; a son and daughter-in-law, Peter L. and Pamela Burghardt of Wilmot; two grandsons, Jonathan D.B. Boutwell and Nicholas F.B. Boutwell, both of Windsor; a sister, Katherine Schnase of Ronan, Mont.; and nieces, nephews and cousins. A brother, Joseph, died in 2000.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews-in-the-Valley, Tamworth, on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 10 a.m.

Annabelle Braham
Active in her Pennsylvania community
WOLFEBORO - Annabelle D. (Allen Shadle) Braham, 83, of Oakmont, Pa., died Saturday, Sept. 21, 202, at her daughter’s home in Wolfeboro.
She was born April 29, 1919, in Findlay, Ohio, daughter of Faust and Nettle Elzay Darling.
She was a member of Oakmont Presbyterian Church, William McKinley Citizens Center, Riverview Community Action Center and Verona Eagles Auxiliary.
She was the widow of Harvey W. Allen, James A. Shadle and Charles W. Braham. She was also predeceased by a son, Harvey Allen.
Family members include two daughters, Rosalie Shadle Minnerly of New Hampshire and Jamie Shadle Sweeney of Colorado; two sons, William P. Braham of Erie, Pa., and Vincent A. Braham of Oakmont, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were Sept. 25 at Burket-Truby Funeral Home, Oakmont, Pa., with the Rev. Dr. Stephen Wilson officiating. Burial followed at Lakewood Memorial Gardens, Cheswick, Pa.

Ida Fawcett
Longtime resident of Connecticut
WOLFEBORO - Ida (Hveen) Fawcett, 91, of Center Street, died Sept. 18, 2002, at Huggins Hospital.
She was born Oct. 28, 1910, in Brooklyn, N.Y., daughter of Adolph and Ida (Begbie) Hveen. She had lived in Wolfeboro for the past four years, having previously lived in Newbury, Mass., for eight years, Stuart, Fla., and, for most of her life, in Woodbury, Conn.
She was a member of First Congregational Church in Wolfeboro and North Congregational Church in Southbury, Conn.
She was the widow of Patrick F. Fawcett. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Alice Petty, and a grandson, Timothy Petty.
Family members include her son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Muriel Fawcett of Loudon, Tenn.; a daughter, Joyce Harrah of Wolfeboro; a son-in-law, Stanley W. Petty of Newbury, Mass.; a brother, Edward Hveen of Southbury, Conn.; 10 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, at Carpino Funeral Home in Southbury. Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery, Southbury.

Ruth Pevey
Homemaker, enjoyed gardening and travel
BRIDGTON, Maine - Ruth M. Pevey, 89, of Bridgton and more recently the Casco Inn, died peacefully Sept. 23, 2002, at Bridgton Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born and raised in Danvers, Mass., and attended school there.
She was the widow of Lyman E. Pevey, Sr., who died in June, 1999. They lived most of their married life in Chelmsford, Mass., before moving to Wakefield, N.H., in 1970 after retiring from Wright Trucking of Lowell, Mass., and later to Ossipee, N.H.
Mrs. Pevey was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, travel and visiting with family and friends.
Family members include her son and daughter-in-law, Lyman E. and Patricia Pevey, Jr.; three grandchildren and their spouses, Janis Lanier of Cary, N.C., Jeffrey Pevey of Easton, Md., and Susan Shillito of Duxbury, Mass.; and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by three brothers, Carl, Frank and Harold Carlsen.
Graveside services and burial were held Sept. 25 at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Danvers, Mass.

Janet Shea
Active in many groups in Union
UNION - Janet E. (Bailey) Shea, 74, of Maple Street, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at York Hospital in York, Maine.
She was born March 20, 1928, in Woburn, Mass., daughter of David E. and Edith (Dornan) Bailey. She was an honors graduate of Spaulding High School in Rochester, Class of 1944, attended McIntosh College 1945-46 and attended Northeastern University.
She was employed with the Boston and Maine Railroad as a general agent and telegraph operator for 42 years and loved her work.
An active member of Union Congregational Church, she was a choir member for more than 60 years, served as church clerk for 34 years, was a member of the Woman’s Fellowship, serving in all offices, taught Sunday school and was a member of the Stevens Memorial Bell Choir for years.
She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Post 7663 in Union, and a past president, chaplain and treasurer. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Unity Chapter 21 of Union, a chaplain and sentinel, and a member of the Grange in Union, holding several offices and chaplain. A member of the DAR, Mary Torr Chapter, she was former assistant treasurer, a treasurer with the board of trustees of the Union Library, where she mowed the lawn for many years, and a member of the Old Wheels Club, railroad retirees.
She was the widow of Carroll M. Shea, who died in 1991.
Family members include a son, Carroll J. “Snooky” Shea and his wife, Sue, of Union; a daughter, Sally A. and her husband, Gary A. Burr of Union; three grandchildren; two sisters, Martha Pratt of Union and Priscilla Anderson of Union; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, William Bailey, and a sister, Eleanor Lemoin.
Calling hours are this evening, Sept. 26, 7-9 p.m. at C.E. Peaslee and Son Funeral Home, 2079 Wakefield Road, Sanbornville.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 27, at 11 a.m. at Union Congregational Church on Main Street, Union, with the Rev. John Simpson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Milton Mills Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA of your choir or to Union Congregational Church.
Jennifer Weeks
Lifelong member of Girl Scouts of America
BROOKFIELD - Jennifer Weeks, 54, of Brookfield, died Sept. 24, 2002, after a long illness.
She was born Feb. 8, 1948, in Munich, Germany, daughter of Raymond (Lt. Col. Ret.) Weeks and Dolores (Osgood) Weeks and spent an educational childhood, traveling in a military family.
A graduate of Kingswood Regional High School in Wolfeboro and the University of New Hampshire in Durham, she moved to Everett, Wash., in 1973, where she worked and raised a family until her return to New Hampshire in 1995. While in Washington, she was employed as an adjudicator and employment counselor for the Department of Employment Security.
A lifelong member of the Girl Scouts of America, in Totem Council she was honored several times as both a leader and Association Chairperson. She had also served on various task forces for the Council. In addition, she established a traveling museum of Girl Scout memorabilia (Daisy’s Dream), which she shared with young and old alike, both in Washington and New Hampshire.
Since her return to New Hampshire, she had worked at Thompson Investment Casting as the office manager, was a GED tutor and was a loving caregiver to her parents.
In addition to her parents, family members include a daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie (Doyle) and David Cordeira of Ossipee; a brother, Nathan O. Weeks of Dover; two nephews and a niece; three stepchildren and three step grandchildren; and her dear friend, Linwood Cone of Rochester.
There are no calling hours. Friends are welcome to attend the funeral service Saturday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. at Peaslee Funeral Home Chapel in Sanbornville. Burial will be at Mathews Cemetery, 2079 Wakefield Road, North Wakefield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Swift Water Girl Scout Council, 88 Harvey Road, Manchester, NH, the Gafney Library in Sanbornville or the American Center Society.
Louise Cassano
WOLFEBORO - Louise C. Cassano, former resident of The Ledges, died Aug. 3, 2002, in Wolfeboro.
Those who wish are welcome to attend a mass in her memory at St. Cecilia Church, Friday, Sept. 27, at 10 a.m.
