Hannah Smith
Homemaker and mother, Sunday school teacher
UNION - Hannah Smith, 90, formerly of Railroad Avenue, died Aug. 5, 2000, at Rochester Manor in Rochester.
Born Dec. 18, 1909, in Milton, daughter of Berthold I. and Musetta A. (Dorr) Demeritt, she had lived in Union for more than 40 years before moving to Rochester Manor in 1991.
A homemaker and mother, she was a member of Union Congregational Church, where she had been a devoted Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed cooking and baking and was famous for her rolls.
She was the widow of Edmund L. Smith, Sr., who died in 1970, and was also predeceased by a daughter, Sylvia Joy, in 1992.
Family members include three daughters, Dorothy Rogers of Albany, Lena Murray of Wake Forest, N.C., and Shirley Henner of Milton; four sons, Edmund Smith, Jr., of Union, David Smith of Middleton, Richard Smith of Milton and James Smith of Tamworth; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Aug. 9 at Union Congregational Church with the Rev. John Simpson, pastor, officiating. Burial was at Plummers Cemetery, Milton.

Jack C. Hosman
Retired Pilot, seasonal resident for 35 years
CENTER OSSIPEE - Jack C. Hosman, 67, of Napa, Calif., died Aug. 5, 2000, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon
He was born April 7, 1933, in Lincoln, Neb., son of Stuart and Wilma Hosman.
He lived in California for most of his life while spending vacations in Center Ossipee for the past 35 years.
He had been employed as a pilot for Eastern Airlines for 23 years and later worked for Arrow Air for five years.
He served in the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel during Vietnam. He loved to fly and was in the process of building his second airplane.
Family members include his wife of 19 years, Judith (Neill) Hosman, Napa, Calif., three daughters, Dana Jones of Port Varre, La., Kelly Mills, Alpharetta, Ga., and Mary-Stuart Hosman, Scottsdale, Ariz.; a granddaughter, Tate Hosman Mills; his stepfather, Paul Paris, Oakland, Calif.; a brother, Bart Hosman, Lafayette, Calif.; nieces and nephews.
At his request there will be no calling hours; memorial services will be held in California at the convenience of the family.

Bernard L. White
Native and lifelong resident of Ossipee
CENTER OSSIPEE—Bernard L. White, 74, of Marble Road, died July 28, 2000, at the Mountain View Nursing Home, Ossipee, after a long illness.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Ossipee, the son of Belmont and Grace (Eldridge) White.
Mr. White had been employed as a laborer for various restaurants in the area and later worked for the E.D. Swett Construction Company. Most recently he had worked for the J.F. Chick & Son Lumber Company, Madison.
He loved to fish and hunt. He was a past member of the Fish & Game Club in Dover.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Margueritte (Truchon) White of Ossipee; four step-daughters, Patricia Frost of Tamworth, Priscilla Wolf of Andover, Carol Guiotte of Laconia, and Frances Hyslop of Ossipee; a stepson, Leslie Tilton of Conway; many step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ervin White, Harold White and Norman White, all of Center Ossipee; five sisters, Beaulah White, of Center Ossipee, Winifred Mitchell of Center Ossipee, Barbara Heil of Ossipee, Geraldine Eldridge of West Ossipee, and June Shackford of Center Ossipee; many nieces and nephews,
He was predeceased by a brother, Rodney A. White of Center Ossipee.
Margaret “Peggy” Raymond
Directed Girl Scout Camps, active in Church work
WOLFEBORO - Margaret “Peggy” Raymond, 86, of Sugar Hill, 83 Rollingwood Drive, Wolfeboro died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000 at Huggins Hospital.
Born April 13, 1914 in Sandwich, Mass., daughter of the late Chipman and Margaret (Bowlby) Gilliatt, she lived in Wolfeboro since 1973, moving there from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania.
A graduate of Bridgewater State College in Mass., she taught in the schools systems of Marion and Harwich, Mass.
Mrs. Raymond was a member of the Wolfeboro First Congregational Church and was very active in church work. She had been Girl Scout Executive in Bangor-Brewer, Maine, and directed Girl Scout camps for Waltham and Plymouth, Mass. and Millinocket, Maine.
She was a nature specialist, growing many beautiful plants, particularly African violets.
She leaves her husband of 59 years Dr. Robert E. Raymond of Wolfeboro; two daughters: Patricia Ruth Persinger of Bluffton, Ohio and Barbara Lynn Sakawama of New York City; a brother Clayton Gilliatt of Waseon, Ohio, six grandchildren, one great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service was held Saturday, Aug. 19 at the Wolfeboro First Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 NW 9th Ave., Miami, FL 33136.
Marguerite M. Beckett
Worked as a nurse at Mountain View
OSSIPEE - Marguerite M. (Saybe) Beckett, 74, of Route 28, Ossipee, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000 at her home.
Born Aug. 4, 1926 in Beverly, N.J., daughter of the late Arthur and Lea (Robinson) Saybe, she had lived in Ossipee since 1976, moving there from Rancocas, N.J.
Mrs. Beckett worked as an E.R. nurse in Cherry Hill Hospital in N.J. and later at the Mountain View Nursing Home in Ossipee.
She was a founding member of the Burlington County Civil Air Patrol.
Survivors include two sons: Charles R. Beckett of Coral Springs, Fla. and Leslie A. Beckett of Ossipee; a brother, Arthur Saybe of Burlington, N.J. and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24 at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Burlington, N.J.

Reba Eldridge
A devoted wife, mother and grandmother
OSSIPEE - Reba (Vittum) Eldridge, 77, of Dore Street, Center Ossipee, died Aug. 14, 2000, in Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital, Lebanon.
Born in Tamworth on April 21, 1923, she was the daughter of Herbert and Alice (Clark) Vittum. She lived the past 58 years in Center Ossipee.
Mrs. Eldridge was a past member of South Tamworth United Methodist Church.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother
Family members include her husband of 58 years, Charles P. Eldridge of Center Ossipee; five sons: Charles P. Eldridge Jr. of Center Tuftonboro, Rodney Eldridge, Michael Eldridge and Gordon Eldridge all of Center Ossipee, and John Eldridge of Westbrook, Maine; a daughter Beverly Ryder of Center Ossipee; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, and a sister Mary Gibson of Tamworth.
The funeral will be held Thursday, Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. at the Moultonville United Methodist Church, Center Ossipee, with burial in the Chickville Cemetery.

Alys E. Hutchins
Former Wentworth resident, 'Miss Newton'
ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Alys Hutchins, a former resident of Leatherneck Lodge, Lake Wentworth, died Aug. 17 at the age of 92.
Born in Newton, Mass., Mrs. Hutchins was one of eight children of Simon and Alemeda Delorey. A graduate of Newton High School, she was selected Miss Newton of 1924. She later attended Kendall Hall, Pride’s Crossing, Mass.
Mrs. Hutchins was predeceased by her husband Col. Lyford Hutchins and a son Robert L. Hutchins. She is survived by a son, Stuart Hutchins of California, a daughter-in-law Dorothy Hutchins of Alexandria, six grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Aug. 28 at 9 a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery.
