Self-employed carpenter

BROOKFIELD - Gilbert “Gil” E. French, 47, of 430 Wentworth Road, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro after a long illness.
He was born July 7, 1955, in Exeter, son of Stanley and Ruth (Rye) French. He was a self-employed carpenter for more than 20 years.
Family members include his wife, Lynn (Arnold) French; three sons, Joseph Wilbur of Ossipee and Nicholas and Benjamin French, both of Brookfield; two grandchildren; four sisters Roberta Stevens of Nottingham, Dorothy Rowe of Stratham, Marilyn Graf of Bow and Nancy Saltmarsh of Wolfeboro; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services are private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the French Children Fund, c/o Citizens Bank Trust, P.O. Box 569, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.
The Cremation Society of New Hampshire assisted with arrangements.

Bertha Huston
Enjoyed her teddy bear collection

DOVER - Bertha J. Huston, 71, of Piscataqua Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester.
She was born March 17, 1931, in Hiram, Maine, daughter of Louie W. and Lulu (Douglas) Dearborn.
She was a homemaker and also worked as a cook at Harvey’s Bakery for several years. She had been a Dover resident since 1958, having moved there from Tuftonboro.
She enjoyed crafts, sewing, painting and her extensive teddy bear collection.
Family members include her husband of 44 years, Ansel E. Huston, of Dover; four sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne F. and Marilyn McBride and David P. and Peggy McBride, all of Wolfeboro, Michael P. and Karyn McBride of Rochester, and Ansel E. and Gail Huston III of Lee; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra G. McBride-Scott and husband Vincent, of Rochester, and Diane L. and Peter Loiselle of Barrington; four brothers Howard Dearborn, of Rollinsford, Louie Dearborn, of Tuftonboro, Charles Dearborn, of Dover, and James Dearborn, of Wolfeboro; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. as the funeral service was held Sept. 14 at Tasker Funeral Home in Dover. Burial followed at Pine Hill Cemetery.
Those who wish may make memorial donations to the American Heart Association, N.H. Affiliate, 20 Merrimack St., Suite 1, Manchester, NH 03101-2244 or to the American Diabetes Association, Cocheco Chapter, P.O. Box 1816, Dover, NH 03820.

Donald Marsh
Resident of Ossipee for 13 years

CENTER OSSIPEE - Donald C. Marsh, 44, of Moultonville Road, died suddenly Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at Huggins Hospital, Wolfeboro.
He was born May 2, 1958 in North Charliroi, Pa., and had lived in Monoganhela, Pa., where he graduated from Monongahela High School and later attended a mechanic’s trade school. He had also lived in Donora, Pa., before moving to Ossipee 13 years ago.
Family members include his companion of 18 years Dawn M. Jones of Center Ossipee; their children Tanya and Tasha Jones, of Center Ossipee; a grandson; his brothers, William A. Marsh, of Fayette City, Pa., and Kenneth Marsh, of Yukon, Pa.; a sister Joanne Livingston, of Pace, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
There are no calling hours. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
Lord Funeral Home, Center Ossipee, is in charge of arrangements.

Michael Onufrak, Jr.
Decorated veteran of World War II

TUFTONBORO - Michael Onufrak, Jr., 77, of Tuftonboro, died Sept. 16, 2002, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.
He was born April 5, 1925, in Jermyn, Pa., son of Michael and Amelia (Ruchniak) Onufrak. He had lived in Tuftonboro for the past 12 years, having moved there from Wayland, Mass.
During World War II, he served his country with the U.S. Marines and was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal with one Oak Leaf during action against Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, Tarawa, Gilbert Island and Saipan, Marianas Islands from November, 1942, to June, 1944.
Mr. Onufrak worked for Raytheon as a production control planner for 42 years. He was a member of the Kingswood Golf Club in Wolfeboro.
Family members include his wife of 57 years, Esther (Malcolm) Onufrak of Tuftonboro; two sons, Michael D. Onufrak of Natick, Mass., and J. Brent Onufrak of Bellingham, Mass.; two daughters, Judith A. Detterman of Lawrence, Mass., and Susan J. Willis of Saugus, Mass.; a sister, Mildred Wanas of Mayfield, Pa., and a brother, Walter Onufrak of Harrisburg, Pa.; and six granddaughters.
Calling hours are this evening, Sept. 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 85 Mill St., Wolfeboro.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be at Townhouse Cemetery, Tuftonboro.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Russell E. Clough
Had owned Hoyt’s Carpet and Tile

TUFTONBORO - Russell E. Clough, 60, of Tuftonboro Neck Road, Mirror Lake, died Sept. 14, 2001, at his home.
He was born Oct. 18, 1940, in Wolfeboro, son of Harold and Doris (York) Clough, and had lived in the Wolfeboro – Tuftonboro area all his life.
He served his country with the U.S. Air Force.
He owned and operated Hoyt’s Carpet and Tile in Wolfeboro for many years.
He was a past master and 25-year member of Morning Star Lodge 17, past president of Morning Star Lodge Temple association, past high priest of Carroll Chapter, and past president of Samadi Shrine Club. He was a recipient of the highest Masonic award, the General Sullivan Award, and was a member of the York Rite, the Bektash Temple, and was past chief steward and jester and past patron of Warren Chapter 10.
Family members include his wife, Mazy (Rowe) Clough of Mirror Lake; two daughters and their husbands, Julie and Dr. Christopher Almeida of Bristol, R.I., and Jennifer and Dennis Cabral of Wolfeboro; a brother, Harold Clough of Wolfeboro; two sisters, Beverly Bean of Wolfeboro and Doris-Ann Clough of Wolfeboro; and four grandchildren.
A celebration of his life and a Masonic service will be held Sunday, Sept. 23, at 1 p.m. at his home at 74 Tuftonboro Neck Road, Mirror Lake. The Rev. Thom Christian will officiate.
Memorial donations may be made to VNA-Hospice of Southern Carroll County and Vicinity, PO Box 1620, Wolfeboro, NH.

Richard G. Frohock
Volunteer fireman, veteran of WWII, Korea

ALTON - Richard G. Frohock, 75, of Route 11, West Alton, died Sept. 16, 2001, at Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia.
He was born Feb. 25, 1926, in Laconia, son of Eugene and Myrtle (Benton) Frohock.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and in the Korean War.
He lived in West Alton for most of his life. He retired from Bergen-Paterson in Laconia and had worked for Scott & Williams for several years.
He was a volunteer for the West Alton Fire Department for many years and was a member of American Legion Post 72 of Alton.
Family members include his wife of 47 years, Betty (Pike) Frohock of West Alton; a daughter, Mary Frohock of Colorado; a son, Paul Frohock of West Alton; an uncle, John Benton of Belmont; and several cousins.
A funeral service will be held today, Thursday, at 2 p.m. at Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia. The Rev. Dwight Meader of Rochester will officiate. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Gilford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the West Alton Fire Department, RFD 4, Box, Laconia, NH 03246.

Karen Morrill-Nason
Formerly of Texas and California

WOLFEBORO - Karen Morrill-Nason, 44, of Haines Hill Road, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia.
She was born May 11, 1957, in Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington, D.C., daughter of Arthur and Michelle (Resvard) Morrill. She attended school in San Antonio, Texas, and California.
Family members include her husband, Walter D. Nason of Wolfeboro; a daughter, Danielle Morrill of Fountain Valley, Calif.; her father and his wife, Arthur and Nancy Morrill of Meredith; her mother and her husband, Michelle and Cy Davies of Fountain Ville, Calif.; her brothers, Kerry Morrill of Gilford, Gavin Macdonald of Sanbornton, and Scott Davies of Fountain Valley, Calif.; a sister, Shelly Costantini of Hudson; grandparents Nell Davies of California and Mildred Hood of Meredith; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held today, Thursday, at 2 p.m. at Lord Funeral Home, Route 28. Burial will be private.

Bernard George Edmund Stiff
Noted engineer and inventor

OSSIPEE - Bernard George Edmund Stiff, of Roland Park, Center Ossipee, former longtime resident of Lynnfield, Mass., died Sept. 8, 2001, after a long illness, at Mountainview Nursing Home in Ossipee.
He was born in Saltash, England, Jan. 3, 1917, and immigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1926.
A graduate of Arlington High School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Class of 1942) he was a creative engineer and inventor who had a significant impact on many important scientific developments of our time.
At Draper Labs MIT during WWII he worked on the successful Range Finder anti-aircraft weapon used by the Pacific Fleet. At High Voltage Engineering, he designed several of the major components of the medical X-ray generator and the first 3-million-volt electron machine.
While at United Shoe Machinery, he was responsible for development of the control rod for the first nuclear submarine, USS Triton. At Avco he was instrumental in solving material purity issues for the heat shield of the Apollo spacecraft.
During his retirement, he pursued many inventions including development of conical harmonic drive and energy efficient technology, on which he received multiple patents.
He was a longtime member and trustee of Park Street Church, Boston and, during retirement, a member of the First Congregational Church, Center Ossipee.
Family members include Eugenia (Neal), wife of 57 years; two brothers Dr. Donald W.S. Stiff of Bellingham, Wash. and John M. Stiff of Osprey, Fla.; two daughters Genie Bennett of Meredith, and Betsy Mabry of Houston, Tex; two sons P. Enoch Stiff of Milwaukee, Wis., and Geoffrey Stiff of Richmond, Va.; and 12 grandsons and one granddaughter.
A memorial service was held Sept. 15. at the Family Life Center, First Congregational Church, Center Ossipee.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (10 Ferry St., Suite 427B, Concord, NH 03301) or to the First Congregational Church of Center Ossipee building fund.
