Harry V. Severance
LACONIA - Harry V. Severance, 87, formerly of 126 Washington St., Lakeport, died at the Masonic Home in Manchester, on Monday, July 1, 2002. He was the widower of Eva Mae (Johnson) Severance, who died in 1999.
Mr. Severance was born in Hill, on June 28, 1915, the only child of Harry B. and Elizabeth (Heath) Severance.
Mr. Severance owned his own business in the old town of Hill, and was one of the first businesses to build in the new town of Hill in 1941. In 1951, he joined Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. and retired in 1971 due to ill health.
In 1959, he moved from Hill to Laconia.
He was a past president of the Lakes Region Life Underwriters, was a member of Union Lodge #79 F&AM, a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Bektash Temple, the Bektash Mini-Patrol, and the A Patrol Marching Unit. He was also a member of the Winnipesaukee Shrine Club.
He was a member of the Congregational Church of Laconia and had served as a deacon.
He is survived by four children, Sandra Libby of Nashua, the Rev. Arthur G. Severance of San Antonio, Texas, and twins, Jack H. Severance of Laconia and Joan E. Coursey of Rumney; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia, on Friday, July 5, at 1 p.m. Mr. Severance’s son, the Rev. Arthur G. Severance of San Antonio, Texas, will officiate. Burial will follow in the family lot in Pleasant Cemetery in Hill.

Pauline H. Drake
LACONIA - Pauline H. Drake, 87, of 175 Blueberry Lane and formerly of 7 Church St., died at the Genesis Eldercare Network, Laconia Center on Thursday, June 27, 2002 surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Drake was born April 29, 1915, in Franklin, the daughter of Rodney F. and Martha (Tatro) Merrill. She was a Foster Grandparent at the Laconia State School and Training Center for three years.
Mrs. Drake was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Laconia Congregation.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Mumblo of Florida and Gary Mumblo of Oregon; two daughters, Sandra Vaillancourt of Laconia and Kathleen Jane Hanson and her husband, Henry, of Laconia; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Muriel Pouliot of Bristol, Conn.; and many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by 11 brothers and sisters.
There will be no calling hours.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 35 Blueberry Lane, Laconia on Saturday, July 20, at 3 p.m.

Joseph G. Kennedy
WINDHAM, Maine - Joseph G. Kennedy Sr., 86, of Windham, Maine, died on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland after a brief illness.
Mr. Kennedy was born Feb. 29, 1916, in Weirs Beach, N.H., the son of Ermon and Mary (Silva) Kennedy. He attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from Quincy High School. In 1937, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Massachusetts State College, where he captained the baseball and soccer teams.
Mr. Kennedy was an entomologist working for several years in the Florida Everglades, and later for the U.S. Government during World War II on malaria control. He later owned and operated several movie and drive-in theaters in Maine and New Hampshire including the Key Theater in Laconia, N.H. and the Windham Drive-In Theater in Windham, Maine, until his retirement in 1982. He was also a Deputy Sheriff in Cumberland County for many years.
He enjoyed golf, hockey and baseball. He played in the Portland Men’s Hockey League into his early 60s. He was also actively involved in many community and charitable activities.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph G. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Peggy of Lancaster, Mass. and Thomas M. Kennedy of Swanzey, N.H.; a daughter, Kathleen R. Kennedy of Lancaster, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Graves.
There will be no calling hours.
The funeral service will be private at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in the family lot at Bayside Cemetery, Laconia, N.H.

Clara A. Jackson
LACONIA - Mrs. Clara A. (Robertson) Jackson, 88, of 406 Court St., died at the St. Francis Home on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002.
Mrs. Jackson was born Nov. 19, 1913, in Saylesville, R.I., the daughter of George and Claudia (Olney) Robertson. She lived in Greenfield, Mass. and Winchester, N.H. before moving to the Bishop Brady Apartments in Laconia in 2000.
Mrs. Jackson was a registered nurse, graduating from the Rhode Island School of Nursing in 1950 and was licensed in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. She worked at the Beech Hill Alcoholic Hospital in Dublin for three years and also worked at the Keene Hospital. She later worked at the Northfield Mount Hermon Infirmary in Northfield, Mass. for three years before retiring.
Mrs. Jackson loved music and had won a voice scholarship at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Mass. She had been the featured soloist for many gatherings and weddings during her lifetime. Some of her hobbies, besides her music, were traveling which she loved to do. She and her husband had traveled inmost of Europe and some in Asia and North Africa.
Mrs. Jackson was a former member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Saylesville, R.I.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Dr. Clifford S. Jackson of Laconia; a son, William S. Jackson of Newtown, Pa.; a daughter, Carrol Ann Roy of Laconia; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Hebner of Esmond, R.I., Eleanor Nula of Smithfield, R.I. and Florence Barlow of Rehoboth, Mass.; two brothers, Robert Robertson of Lincoln, R.I., and William Robertson of Pawtucket, R.I.; and many nephews and nieces.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29, from 5-8 p.m. at the Merrick R. Williams Funeral Home, 530 Smithfield Ave., Pawtucket, RI. A funeral service will be held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1000 Smithfield Ave., Lincoln, RI., on Monday, Sept. 30, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the family lot at Highland Memorial Park, Johnston, R.I.

Jacob J. Burghardt
SANDWICH - Jacob John "Jack" Burghardt, 77, a former owner and publisher of the Carroll County Independent and the Granite State News, died Sept. 24, 2002, of cancer at his home.
Born Nov. 1, 1924, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Philip and Elisabeth Riegel Burghardt, he graduated from Jones Commercial High School in Chicago and from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill.
He also studied at the University of Zurich and the Foreign Service Institute in Washington, D.C.
Enlisting in the Army Air Force in 1943, he served with the 53rd Troop Carrier Wing in Europe. After graduating form Knox College, he joined the U.S. Department of State and was sent to Rangoon, Burma (now Yangon, Myanmar). He later transferred to the U.S. Information Agency but remained in Burma, his second assignment being Mandalay. For his work there he was presented the Agency’s Meritorious Service Award. He also served in Singapore, and in Indonesia, both in Jakarta and Jogjakarta.
In 1958, he became director of Foster Parents Plan in Vietnam, living in Saigon for four years, and in 1963 was named director of plan’s program in Athens, Greece.
Returning to America in 1967, he assumed the duties of publisher of the Carroll County Independent and Granite State News, retiring in 1997. Sandwich Fair-goers will remember his regular appearances on the newspapers’ floats and entries in the fair parade.
He was a past president of the New Hampshire Press Association and the New England Press Association and served on NEPA’s board of directors for several years. He was also a board member of the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors.
During the late 1980s and 1990s, he organized and led a series of exchange seminars in India and the United States for American and Indian journalists and journalism professors, through the auspices of the U.S.-Indo Subcommission Education and Culture.
Always interested in horses and riding, he helped with the Sandwich Saddle-ites 4-H Horse Club in the 1970s. For several years he was a board member of The Barnstormers Theater in Tamworth, resigning this past summer.
Family members include his wife of 44 years, Ann (Merrow); a daughter, Elisabeth M. Burghardt of Windsor, Vt.; a son, Peter L. Burghardt of Wilmot; two grandsons; a sister, Katherine Schnase of Ronan, Mont.; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, at 10 a.m. at St. Andrews-in-the-Valley, Tamworth.

Wayne E. Symington
BRISTOL - Wayne E. Symington, 54, of Summer Street, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth.
He was born in Springfield, Mass., the son of Sheldon and June (Sparrow) Symington. His family moved to Laconia while he was a teen-ager. He graduated from Laconia High School and the Thompson School of Agriculture at the University of New Hampshire. He was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.
Mr. Symington had lived in the Laconia, Gilford, Meredith, New Hampton and Bristol areas since graduation. He was employed by Vutek, where he was supervisor of the jets department.
He was a born again Christian, who found much enjoyment in sharing God’s word with people. He was a member of the Christian Bikers group and attended the Bristol Federated Church and the Christ Life Center in Laconia.
Mr. Symington’s hobbies included motorcycles, antique cars and photography. He also loved to buy and sell cameras.
In addition to his parents, who summer in Meredith and winter in Zellwood, Fla., he is survived by his wife of 11 years, Bessie (Woodward) Symington of Bristol; two brothers, Bruce Symington of Greenfield, Mass., and Gary Symington of Meadow Vista, Calif.; one sister, Pamela Polopek of Gilford; nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Monday, Sept. 30, from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. at the Emmons Funeral Home, 115 South Main St., Bristol. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002 at 3 p.m. at the Bristol Federated Church, South Main Street, Bristol. Burial will follow in the Homeland Cemetery in Bristol. Edmund J. Fregeau
SKANEATELES, N.Y. - Edmund J. Fregeau, 91, of Skaneateles, formerly of Tilton, N.H., died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002 in Auburn.
Born in Dorchester, Mass., he had lived in the Tilton, N.H., area for many years, prior to moving to Skaneateles three years ago. He formerly owned and operated the Normandy Motel in Winnisquam, N.H. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church.
Mr. Fregeau was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret; a daughter, Patricia Sharp of Skaneateles; two granddaughters, Carolyn Condie of Union Springs and Melissa Sharp of Ifran, Morocco.
He was predeceased by a son, William, in 1965.
Graveside services and burial will be held at noon Tuesday in St. John’s Cemetery, Tilton. Funeral arrangements are by the Robert D. Gray Funeral Home, 49 Jordan St., Skaneateles, N.Y.
