James F. Andrews

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - James F. Andrews, 54, of 6 Harbor Way, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at St. John’s Hospital in Oxnard, Calif..

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on April 22, 1950, he was the son of the late Robert F. and Annette (Fowler) Andrews. He was a graduate of Concord High School, in Concord, N.H., and the school of hard knocks.

He was a self-employed building contractor for over 25 years.

James had a fond appreciation for the outdoors, including hiking, skiing and being on the open ocean. He was an avid yachtsman and yacht restorer. James will be lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and associates for his undying friendship.

Survivors include his children, Samantha Andrews of Norwood, Colo.; John Andrews of Southern Pines, N.C., serving his country in Iraq; Jesse Andrews of Southern Pines, N.C.; Benjamin Bucko of Salisbury, Mass.; sister, Nancy Johnson of Park City, Utah; brother, Jeffrey Andrews of Eliot, Maine; sister-in-law, Tama Andrews of Portsmouth, N.H.; nephews Matthew Johnson of Washington, D.C., Robert Johnson, serving his country in Iraq; and nieces Rebecca Johnson and Lauren Johnson both of Park City, Utah.

James was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Ronald Andrews.

Graveside services will be held at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Route 103/State Road, Eliot, Maine, Wednesday at 11 a.m.. Friends invited. Flowers will be accepted. Visiting hours will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, N.H., Tuesday, 6 to 8 p.m..

Eleanor Cox

PORTSMOUTH - Eleanor Pennell (Hooper) Cox, 89, widow of John E. Cox, of Portsmouth, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at the Edgewood Centre.

Born in Cambridge, Mass., on Jan. 28, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Garfield and Jamima (Pennell) Hooper.

Survivors include her son, Richard Andrews of Brighton, Mass.; five grandchildren, Debbie Manuelian, Donald Andrews, Karen Andrews, Colleen Hardy and Kerry Hardy; six great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Margaret Andrews of Allston, Mass; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Charles G. Andrews and sister, Irene Blanks of Calif.

Memorial visitation will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Saturday Oct. 16 from 12 to 1 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 1 p.m.. Friends invited. Memorial donations may be made to the Edgewood Centre Recreational Fund, 928 South St., Portsmouth, NH 03801 or to a charity of one’s choice

Nicholas Van Malden

NEW DURHAM - Nicholas Van Malden, 87, of Birch Hill Road in New Durham, died early Saturday morning Oct. 9, 2004, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

Born Aug. 16, 1917, in Rotterdam, Holland, the son of the late Johannas and Jacoba (Kanook) Van Malden. Raised in Patterson, N.J., he lived on Long Island for many years and in Freehold, N.J., for over 50 years. Most recently he has resided in New Durham for four years with his son, Bill.

He was proud to serve his country in the Army under the direction of Gen. George Patton, serving in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe, having received the American Theater Medal, Silver Star, Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with Four Bronze Stars and Good Conduct Medal.

Nicholas had retired from the State of New Jersey having worked as a dairyman and driver for the Marlboro State Hospital. He was a dairyman most of his life, having worked at various farms in Northern New Jersey.

He was a lifelong member of the VFW post #4374, American Legion, Elks all of Freehold, N.J.. Nick enjoyed spending time with family and working outdoors and smoking cigars. He was known for his great sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years Eleanor (Hummel) Van Malden of Kemah, Texas, formerly of Freehold, N.J.; two sons, William "Bill" and his wife Dolores Van Malden, of New Durham, Edward R. and his wife Glinda of League City, Texas; a sister, Betty Brumby of Muttonville, Long Island, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Emily and Jacob, both of New Durham, and Angela, Justin and Sam, all of Texas; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers and five sisters.

Calling hours will be held on Monday afternoon from 3 to 6 p.m. at the C.E. Peaslee Funeral Home, 24 Central St. Farmington, N.H. Funeral service will be held at the gravesite in Narrowsburg, N.Y.

Elinor Perkins

Elinor Perkins, Pariseau model

MANCHESTER - Elinor Holmes Perkins was born in Somersworth on Aug. 6, 1911. Her parents, Mildred Hodsdon Holmes and Ralph Wentworth Holmes, were the parents of five children, Chester, Elinor, Ralph Jr., Craig and Mabel. All predeceased her except Mabel, who lives with her husband, Leonard Donneson, in Concord.

Elinor remembers wearing a blue dress and swinging high on a swing in Central Park in Dover. She also modeled for Pariseau’s in Manchester wearing the first Bermuda shorts, French beret, and saddle shoes.

She married Lewis W. "Cy" Perkins on Oct. 20, 1935. They eloped, honeymooning in the White Mountains and at Niagara Falls. Both graduated from high school in 1929, he from Berwick Academy and she from Somersworth High School. Their only child, Cynthia Perkins Keller, was born in 1937.

Elinor made bridal veils for a generation of young women while working for Bernard’s Millinery in Dover. She also worked for J.J. Newberry, Lynch’s of Durham and Eastern Air Devices in Dover where she wound miniature motors in the engineering department, before the advent of computer chips.

She was an avid collector of antiques, a staunch Republican, and had 24 years of happiness with Cy after retirement.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Bruce M. Keller of Manchester; two granddaughters, Amy Keller Gleed of Sandown, and Sarah Keller Kisel of Mountain View, Calif.; and six great-grandchildren, Jesse and Cynthia Stephens, Ryan Gleed, and Lawrence, Nathan and Amanda Kisel; and by her sister, Mabel Donneson, and her husband, Leonard, of Concord.

Elinor resided at Villa Crest in Manchester. She was blind for many years near the end of her life and she considered her friends and staff of Villa Crest as family.

As per her request, services will be private. Arrangements are through McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Villa Crest Recreation Fund, 1276 Hanover St., Manchester, NH 03104.

Ellenore Smith

NORTH CAROLINA - Ellenore Eddy Smith, 84, of Southern Pines, N.C., died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at her home.

Private services will be held at a later date at Bayside Cemetery in Laconia, N.H..

Born Oct. 2, 1919, in Southern Pines to the late Ellsworth C. and Alice Crosby Eddy. She was a homemaker. Formerly of Laconia, she attended Gilford Community Church.

A daughter, Pamela A. Walker, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Harold B. Smith; three sons, George E. Smith of Tamworth, Philip W. Smith of Eugene, Ore., and Berrier "Thad" Smith of Tamworth; three daughters, Catherine B. Kelly of Aberdeen, N.C., Jennifer S. Meador of Cameron, N.C., and Alice Victoria of Tacoma, Wash.; and 20 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Boles Funeral Home and Crematory of Southern Pines, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

Orania Samaras

MANCHESTER - Orania Samaras died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at the Hanover Hill Health Care Center after a period of failing health.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time; a complete obituary will appear in the Tuesday edition of the Union Leader.

The McHugh Funeral Home, 483 Beech St., Manchester has charge of the arrangements.

Gerard Mondoux

ROCHESTER - Gerard Mondoux, 80, of 17 Lambert Court died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center.

Calling hours will be held Monday, Dec. 6, 2004 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 S. Main St., Rochester, NH 03867.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 S. Main St., Rochester, NH 03867. Burial will follow the service at the St. Mary Cemetery, Lowell Street, Rochester.

A full obituary will be announced in Monday’s edition.

Isabella Baker

PEORIA, Ill. - Isabella Margaret Cassily Baker, 81, of 502 W. Hudson Ave., Peoria, died 11:02 a.m., Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.

Born Feb. 1, 1923, in Dover, N.H., to James J. and Rose Mallon Chandler Cassily. She married Cecil J. Baker on Feb. 12, 1945, in Dover. He survives.

Also surviving are a son, John Baker of Peoria; two daughters, Theresa (and Michael) Redd of East Peoria and Cynthia (and Edward) Schlicksup of Charlotte, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rose Dixon of Fairview Heights, Mo.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Baker.

She was a member of St. Philomena Catholic Church where a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Attilio Morelli officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wright & Salmon Mortuary with recitation of the rosary at 7:45 p.m.. Additional visitation 30 minutes before services at the church. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery.

Leonard Bussiere

PLYMOUTH - Leonard Bussiere, 76, of Morse Road, Plymouth, formerly of Roblen Drive, Pawtucket, R.I., died Monday at home.

He was born in Pawtucket, a son of the late Alexander and Eva (Bonnafe) Bussiere.

He was the husband of Alice (Beauvais) Bussiere for 55 years. He was a mechanic for North East Clark Lift of Warwick, R.I., for 32 years, retiring in 1998 and moving from Pawtucket to New Hampshire in 1990. He also worked for the American Insulated Wire Co. for a while.

Mr. Bussiere was an Army veteran, serving in the 43rd Division.

He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Consolation Church and he enjoyed doing yard work, working with flowers and gardening, and also enjoyed woodworking.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter-in-law, Pamela (Charron) Bussiere of Pawtucket; two brothers, Roger Bussiere of Attleboro, R.I., Roland Bussiere of Gales Ferry, Conn.; one granddaughter, Tiffany Bussiere of Pawtucket; and several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was the father of the last Wilfred R. Bussiere and he was the brother of the late Wilfred Bussiere, Maurice Bussiere and Richard Bussiere.

A memorial Mass will be held Dec. 10, 2004, at 10 a.m. in St. Matthew Church in Plymouth. Burial will be at a later date. Arrangements are by the Cheetam Mortuary, 1012 Newport Ave., Pawtucket, RI.
