Shirley Barker
CONCORD - Shirley (Snow) Barker, 84, formerly of Manchester, died Jan. 29, 2003, at the Hospice House in Concord after a long battle with cancer.
Ms. Barker was born in Manchester July 31, 1918, the daughter of Harold and Lillian Snow. She was predeceased by her husband Gerald Barker in 1972.
Ms. Barker was a graduate of Manchester High School Central class of 1936. She joined the U.S. Navy during World War II as an Ensign in the Navy Nurse Corps in 1943. She was an Elliot Hospital volunteer having served 2,350 hours. Ms. Barker was also a nurse in the Manchester school system for 21 years, having retired in 1980.
Ms. Barker is survived by a daughter, Ms. Gail Fremeau of Hooksett; two grandchildren; a brother, Wayne Snow of Gilford; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. The Goodwin Funeral Home is in charge of cremation. Burial will be held at the family plot in Pine Grove Cemetery at a future date for family and friends. The Rev. Richard Gray of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Manchester, will officiate at the burial service.

Allen E. Akerman
NEW HAMPTON - Allen E. Akerman, 69, of Akerman Lane, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Lakes Region General Hospital after a period of declining health.
He was born in Alexandria, the son of Clyde and Fedora (Sanborn) Akerman. Mr. Akerman had lived his life in the Alexandria, Bridgewater and New Hampton area.
Prior to retirement, Mr. Akerman had worked for Rochester Shoe, the State of NH Highway Department and as a logger.
Mr. Akerman was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting,, trapping, as well as woodburning, traveling, and moosing in Pittsburg.
Family members include his wife, Glenna (Harvey) Akerman of New Hampton; one son, Rick Akerman of Alexandria; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Akerman of Groton. He was predeceased by one son, Glen Gallagher, formerly of Meredith, and one brother, Clayton Akerman, formerly of Tennessee.
There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held in the spring in Riverside Cemetery in Alexandria. Arrangements are under the direction of Emmons Funeral Home of Bristol.
Conrad P. Teele
LACONIA - Conrad P. Teele, 81, of 247 Wellington Drive and formerly of 15 Sprucewood Drive, Gilford, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia, on Tuesday, March 18, 2003.
Mr. Teele was born Dec. 11, 1921, in Waltham, Mass., the son of Nicholas and Mildred S. (Dicks) Teele.
Mr. Teele served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the 407th Infantry Regiment overseas for 11 months in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany as a machine gunner and was a member of the light machine gun squad. He was wounded during the war and received the Bronze Star in 2001.
He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Newtonville, Mass., for 28 years. After his retirement in 1987, he moved to Gilford and then later moved to Laconia.
Mr. Teele was a communicant of Our Lady of the Lakes Church, Lakeport.
Mr. Teele belonged to the Friends of the Gilford Library. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and was a member of the American Legion Wilkins-Smith Post #1 in Laconia.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Catherine (Burbank) Teele of Laconia; two sons, Kenneth H. Teele of Seattle, Wash., and Michael J. Teele of New York City, N.Y.; two daughters, Paula Baer and her husband, Robert Baer of Laconia and Catherine M. Baker of Parker, Colo.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Avis Connelly of San Antonio, Texas; one nephew and two nieces. He was predeceased by a daughter, Karen E. Walsh, in 1989.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 21, from 7-9 p.m. at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Lakes Church, 50 Washington St., Lakeport, on Saturday, March 22, at 11 a.m. The Rev. George Soberick, pastor of the church, will officiate.
Spring burial will be at a later date in the family lot in Pine Grove Cemetery, Gilford.

Rodney W. Tenney
NORTHFIELD - Rodney Wallace Tenney, 80, of 5 Greenwood Drive in Northfield, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Mountain Ridge-Genesis Elder Care in Franklin following a period of failing health.
Born in New Ipswich Jan. 16, 1923, he was the son of Wallace O., who died in 1931, and Ida L. (Hale) Tenney, who died in 1989. He grew up in New Ipswich, spending his youth and attending grade school there. He later moved from his Highland Farm Home in 1932 to Boscawen and attended school there and was a graduate of Penacook High School, class of 1941. He resided in Boscawen for more than 32 years. He then lived in Franklin from 1954 until 1981 when he moved to Northfield.
A mechanic by trade, Mr. Tenney owned and operated the former Tenney Garage and Mobil Gas Station in Boscawen for four years. He was a former volunteer engine driver with the Boscawen "Much I Do" Fire Company. From 1954 until 1974, he was a driver for the former Rennie’s Taxi Service in Franklin and he and his wife owned and operated Tenney’s Gift Shop in Franklin.
He was a former member of the American Legion, Post #49 in Northfield and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Tenney was an active member for 46 years of Franklin United Methodist Church, serving as church treasurer and member of the board of trustees.
He was an animal lover and enjoyed spending hours doing crossword puzzles.
Mr. Tenney served with the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1943 until 1946. He left Camp Shanks, New York City, in 1944 aboard the Queen Elizabeth for Glasgow, Scotland, later to LeHavre France, to Liege, Belgium, with the Indian Head, 2nd Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge. Later he was wounded in Cologne, Germany, by a sniper, receiving the Purple Heart. He was flown to Paris Hospital and later was flown to Halloran General Hospital on Staten Island and then to Cushing General Hospital, Framingham, Mass. While there, his visitors included Helen Keller and Roy Rogers. He remembered Helen Keller touching his forehead and telling him that he was a "tall man." He was discharged in 1946 as Tech 5th Grade from Company G, 38th Infantry Regiment. Mr. Tenney was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, European African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with two bronze stars for battles of the Rhineland and the Ardennes, American Theater Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was predeceased by his 11-year-old brother, Kenneth H. Tenney who died in New Ipswich.
His family includes his wife of 46 years, Myrna Joan (Brock) Tenney of Northfield; cousins, Marion Whitney of Jaffrey and Edith Petersen of Newington, Conn.
Calling hours will be Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road in Tilton. A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Franklin United Methodist Church in Franklin with the Rev. Carol Cray, pastor, officiating. Soloist will be Beverly Patten and organist, Annis Leone. Committal prayers and interment will be Monday at 2 p.m. with full Military Funeral Honors in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.

Marjorie A. Taylor
LACONIA - Mrs. Marjorie A. Taylor, 92, of 2 Greystone Place, Taylor Community, died at her home on Wednesday, March 19, 2003. She was the widow of Maurice L. Taylor who died in 1980.
Mrs. Taylor was born Sept. 4, 1910, the daughter of William O. and Florence E. (Chase) Pearson.
She and her husband were the proprietors of Headland Farms on Parade Road, now South Down Shores.
Mrs. Taylor attended the South Baptist Church of Laconia and also the Hill Center Church in Hill.
She was an active member of the Laconia, Gilford and Meredith Granges. She was a life member of the Pomona Grange and also a member of the State and National Granges. She was also a past member of the Esther Rebekah Lodge, Opechee Park Club, Belknap County Sportsmen's Association and the local sewing club.
She was a member of the Silver Saints at the Sturtevant Chapel in Keene.
Survivors include three daughters, Elois M. Hurd of Swanzey, Norma L. Hodsdon of West Bethel, Maine and Connie Walters of Laconia; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons: two sisters, Earline G. Sanborn and Christine E. DeLucca, both of Laconia; and many nephews and nieces.
A calling hour will be held at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia, from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, using the Carriage House entrance.
A funeral service will be held following the calling hour at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, at the funeral home.
Burial will be held later in the spring in the family lot in Union Cemetery.

Frances V. Parys
CROMWELL, Conn. - Frances V. Parys, 88, of Cromwell, formerly of Newington, died on Saturday, July 19, 2003.

She was the wife of the late Alfred J. Parys (November 1969), a self-taught, well-known artist of the 1940s.
She was born Frances V. Gacek on March 2, 1915, in New Britain, Conn.
She had resided in Newington for 47 years before moving into Cromwell Crest Nursing Home eight years ago.
Mrs. Parys was employed at the New Britain Town Clerk’s office for many years.
Her family includes her sister, Olga P. Hamilton of Newington, her daughter-in-law and husband, James and Barbara R. Foote of Laconia, N.H.; three grandchildren, Allyson Frances Bryant and husband, Michael of Belmont, N.H., Bryan R. Parys and wife, Natalie, and Caleb D. Parys, all of Laconia, N.H.; two nephews, Artie Parker and wife Terry of Marlborough and Gary Parker of Riverton.
She was predeceased by her newborn daughter, Pamela in April 1944, and her son Alfred F. Parys of Laconia, N.H., in May 1987, and her brother, Stanley Gacek of New Britain.
Howard O. Archibald
LACONIA - Howard O. Archibald, 85, of 25 Union Ave. died July 29, 2003 in Lakes Region General Hospital.

He was born in Ashland on Dec. 11, 1917, the son of Charles and Martha (Young) Archibald and had lived in Laconia most of his life.
Prior to his retirement in 1979, he had been employed as a truck driver by the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Laconia for more than 42 years.
Mr. Archibald was a former member of the Evangelical Baptist Church. He was a life member of both the Laconia Lodge of Elks 876 and the Belknap Sportsman’s Club Association.
He and his wife, Rachel (Decelles) Archibald celebrated 60 years of marriage last Dec. 5.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a granddaughter Christine A. Archibald of Laconia; a great-granddaughter, Amber Stephens of Concord; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, H. Michael Archibald in 1989.
There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at the family lot in Union Cemetery Saturday at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Belknap Sportsman’s Club Association, 182 Lily Pond Road, Gilford, NH 03249.
