Joan T. Smith
WAYLAND, Mass. - Joan Trimble Smith, artist, lecturer, writer and teacher, died of cancer at the age of 77 on Sept. 7, 2002.
Her portrait of Justice Nathan Clifford hangs in the U.S. Supreme Court. Her portrait of Marine Commandant Archibald Henderson is in the Marine Museum, also in Washington, D.C.
A Copley Artist of the Copley Society in Boston and Distinguished Artist of the Concord (Mass.) Art Association and member of the New Hampshire Art Association, she was known for her portraits that may now be found in institutions and private collections throughout the country, as are her landscapes. Recent works included a sculpture of Harry Bentley, founder of Bentley College in Waltham, Mass., and portraits of 14 past presidents of Assumption College in Worcester, Mass.
After attending Montclair, N.J. schools and graduating from Vassar College, she studied at the Art Students League of New York from 1945 to 1950. At that time, modern abstract art was just becoming the rage in the United States. While she admired some, she referred to most as "The Emperor’s New Clothes." Although her work, excepting portraiture, became more impressionistic over the course of her career, she still clung to the traditional style which she found immediate, honest and, above all, sensitive.
As Artist-in-Residence and arts coordinator at Bentley College, she founded an arts program and gallery as well as the Joan Trimble Smith Arts Fund.
Of her, her family wrote: "She was an inspiration to students and friends of all ages and her mere presence drew out artistic talent in those who knew her."
She leaves her husband, Robinson V. Smith; a daughter, Prof. Melissa T. Smith of Youngstown, Ohio; two sons, Rufus V. Smith and wife Shelley of East Lyme, Conn., and Jared R. Smith and wife Diane of Novato, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Justin, Ryan, Daniel and Jonathan.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. at the First Parish Church in Wayland, Mass., and on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. at the New Hampton Community Church in New Hampton. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests gifts in her memory may be sent to Wayside Hospice, 266 Cochituate Rd., Wayland, MA, to the Jimmy Fund, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA or to the Joan Trimble Smith Arts Fund at Bentley College in Waltham, MA.
Arrangements under the direction of the John C. Bryant Funeral Home of Wayland, Mass.
