Mrs. Betty A. Champagne
BELMONT - Mrs. Betty A. Champagne, 69, of 116 Lamprey Road, died at her home on Monday, Feb. 2, 2004.
Mrs. Champagne was born Jan. 21, 1935, in Laconia, the daughter of Guy B. and Blanche G. (Hawkins) Huckins and was a lifelong resident of the Lakes Region.
Mrs. Champagne was employed at the Laconia State School and Training Center for 17 years.
She was a member of the Gunstock Travel Club and volunteered with Boy Scout Troop 65 in Belmont for many years. She enjoyed crafts.
Mrs. Champagne was predeceased by her husband, Rene F. Champagne, who died in 1996; and eight brothers.
Survivors include her daughter, Lillian "Dee" Jackes and her husband Stephen of Belmont; three grandchildren, Brian Jackes, Dennis Jackes and Katie Jackes, all of Belmont; her companion of many years, Glen Hyslop of Ossipee; a brother, David Huckins of Tilton; four sisters, Ruth Johnson of Easley, S.C., Mary Thompson, Phyllis Havey and Barbara Cooper, all of Franklin; and many nephews and nieces.
Memorial calling hours will be held on Friday, Feb. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at the family lot in South Road Cemetery, Belmont.

George L. Smith
BELMONT - George L. Smith, 78, of 54 Randlett St., died at his home on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004.
Mr. Smith was born Jan. 7, 1926, in Belmont, the son of Leslie T. and Marguerite (Fogg) Smith.
He served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War and was a member of the Belmont American Legion Post 48.
Mr. Smith was a lifelong resident of Belmont and was a member of the Belmont Baptist Church. He was a deacon, Sunday school teacher and chairman of the executive committee of the church.
Mr. Smith was plant manager at Cormier Hosiery for many years.
He was predeceased by a brother, Nathan Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Louise F. (Emery) Smith of Belmont; a son, George L. Smith Jr. of Drexel, N.C.; a daughter, Melonie Faye Frances of Belmont; a granddaughter, April Brown of Belmont; one brother, Arthur J. Smith of Hampton; three sisters, Marguerite Marston of Donna, Texas, Shirley Maxfield of Loudon and Mary Maxfield of Zephyr Hills, Fla.; and many nephews and nieces.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the family lot in South Road Cemetery, Belmont.

Joseph E. Duso
MEREDITH —Joseph Edward Duso, 68, of True Road, died Feb. 3, 2004, at Concord Hospital, in Concord.
Born in Northbridge, Mass., on Feb. 14, 1935, he was the son of Wilfred and Margaret (Bourgeois) Duso.
He grew up and resided in the Northbridge, Mass., area. He has been a resident of Meredith for the past 23 years.
He was an Army veteran.
He worked as a supervisor of the dormitories, for the State of New Hampshire, at the Laconia correctional facility, in Laconia.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Meredith.
He and his wife, Sharon, were foster parents to many children over the years.
Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Sharon A. (Ethier) Duso of Meredith; three sons, Michael Duso of Laconia, Andrew Wilder of Meredith and Matthew Duso of Meredith; nine daughters, Lorraine Barr of Ashland, Sharon L. Duso of Park City, Utah, Justine Fitzgerald of Warwick, R.I., Joan Savage of Woonsocket, R.I., Diane Whipple and Susan Meade, both of Blackstone, Mass., Debra Duso of Cumberland, R.I., Amanda Duso and Mary Duso, both of Meredith.; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank Duso of Londonderry and Walter Duso of Whitinsville, Mass.; one sister, Arlene Duso of Rochester; nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held in the Mayhew Funeral Home, Routes 3 and 104, Meredith, on Thursday 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the First Baptist Church, Meredith, on Friday at 10 a.m. The Rev. Stephen Neill, pastor, will officate. Burial will held at the convenience of the family.
Effie Sewell
LACONIA - Effie Sewell, 91, of 6 Granite St., Lakeport and formerly of 154 Valley St., Lakeport, died at the Genesis Eldercare Network-Laconia Center on Tuesday, April 6, 2004.
Mrs. Sewell was born Oct. 24, 1912 in Ashland, the daughter of Clarence L. and Grace A. (Way) Dodge. She lived in Lakeport virtually all of her life.
For more than 70 years, she worked tirelessly for the children of the Lakeport community. She initiated a petition drive that led to the installation of a traffic light in Lakeport Square many years ago. She also helped to organize the families in the area in an effort build a playground, now known as Sanborn Park. She made a large dollhouse and furnished it with handmade furniture, rugs, lights, etc., which she donated to raise money for the park. Her handmade wooden circus was featured in an issue of Modern Maturity magazine, and Antique Doll Magazine brought attention to her handmade flea market dolls, one of which she donated to the Pop Warner Team to raise funds for its trip to Georgia.
She owned Sewell's Second Hand Furniture on Valley Street for more than 50 years and was always helping the poor or someone in need. She let the children of the area come over to her home and make something for their parents for Christmas, birthdays, Mother's Day and Father's Day. She always had a large supply of craft items on hand. She welcomed children to come to her house and play ping pong in the garage and horseshoes or croquet in the yard. She was known to generations as the "gum lady," because as legend has it, any child who came to her door on a Friday got a piece of Juicy Fruit Gum.
During World War II, Mrs. Sewell volunteered for the war effort and was an airplane spotter, receiving a medal and a letter from President Eisenhower for her efforts.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, including Janet Shosa, Grace Desisto, with whom she lived, and Donald Dodge, all of Laconia, Henry C. Dodge of Merrimack, Evelyn George of Florida; a half-sister, Bernice Taylor, of Manchester; many grandnieces and grandnephews and a foster daughter, Frances "Peggy" Tucker of Missouri.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Guy W. Sewell Sr. in 1980; her second husband, Wendell H. Gilchrist, in 2001; by her son, Guy W. Sewell Jr., in 1977; two brothers, Henry Dodge and Clarence S. Dodge, who died March 21, 2004 and three sisters, Lucy Hickey, Esther Batchelder and Agnes Sargent.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 9, from 7-9 p.m. in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia.
A service will be held at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home on Saturday, April 10, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in the family lot in Union Cemetery in Laconia.

Elaine Stimpson
NEW DURHAM - Elaine R. Stimpson, 74, of Main Street, died suddenly on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Born May 10, 1929 in Farmington, she was a daughter of the late Abbott and Arlene (Place) Lawrence. A graduate of Farmington High School, Class of 1946, she was a star basketball player.
Mrs. Stimpson worked for the town of New Durham for 22 years as a bookkeeper and deputy town clerk. She retired in October 2003.
An avid golfer, she played at the Farmington Country Club, winning of many trophies. She enjoyed puzzles, knitting, stenciling, gardening, birds, holidays with the family, enjoyed visiting Foxwoods and was a New England Patriots fan.
Of Mrs. Stimpson, her family wrote, "A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she was loved by all in her family and the community."
Survivors include her husband of 27 years, Dean Stimpson of New Durham; 10 children, Denise and husband Joseph Novak of Daytona, Fla., Glenn and wife Sharon Chagnon of Alton, Donna Chagnon of Davisville, Diane MacDonald of Alton, Darlene Brown of Manchester, Dale Chagnon of Alton, Deborah Chagnon of Barnstead, Janine and husband Patrick Young of Farmington, Dennis and wife Annette Chagnon of Alton and Richard and wife Linda Chagnon Jr. of Alton; 25 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Nancy Landstrom of Ohio; three brothers, Roger Lawrence of Alton, Richard Lawrence of Farmington and James Lawrence of Columbia; several nieces and nephews.
She was pre-deceased by her first husband, Richard L. Chagnon Sr.
Calling hours are Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Peaslee Funeral Home, 24 Central St. in Farmington. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 9, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Farmington.

Ruth Dodge
SANDWICH - Ruth Ivy Dodge, 51, died April 5, 2004 at her home on Maple Ridge Road, in North Sandwich.
Born in Elmhurst, N.Y., on March 10, 1952, she was the daughter of William A. and Eva (Robb) Buckingham.
She grew up in Tucson, Ariz., and graduated from Catalina High School, in Tucson. She has been a resident of the North Sandwich area since the early 1970s.
She worked at Annalee Dolls for several years and as a waitress at former Longwood Farm Restaurant in Center Harbor. She also worked at the former Amatex Mill, in Meredith, as a machine operator.
She was well known for her home bakery business and did many demonstrations on bread baking to many of the local church and civic groups.
She was a life member of the Sandwich Players and served as house manager for most all of the productions.
Survivors include her husband of 27 years, William G. Dodge of North Sandwich; a daughter, Megan Dodge of North Sandwich; a brother, John Robb of Troy, N.Y., and two nephews.
There are no calling hours.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Sandwich Baptist Church. The Rev. Cynthia Morse, Interim pastor, will officiate. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
