Arthur G. Apy
Died: Wednesday, February 02, 2005
Age: 70
WOLFEBORO – Arthur G. Apy, formerly of Little Silver and Sea Bright, N.J. and a Wolfeboro resident since 1999 died in Boston Feb. 2 after a brief struggle with cancer. He was 70. The son of Chester and Grace Wiseburn Apy, he considered himself a "Jersey clam digger," having grown up at the shore in Monmouth County, N.J. Receiving his early education in Little Silver and Red Bank, he graduated from the Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J. in 1953. After serving with the Special Services of the Army in Japan and Korea, he attended Washington & Lee University, and then graduated with a Bachelor of Music in voice from North Texas State in Denton. Further musical study followed at Juilliard and at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
Apy was a member of the Metropolitan Opera chorus for 27 years, retiring in 1999, at which time he relocated to Wolfeboro. During his career at the Met, he sang as soloist in numerous operas, including radio and "Live from the Met" television broadcasts. In addition to his wonderful tenor voice, he was a serious boater who loved the speed of racing hydroplanes with the APBA, catamarans, and, especially, ice boats. In his quest to invent and build the fastest ice boat, he was always happiest designing experimental boats, including one with a "hardsail," a "rear-steerer," and a backward facing "DN." Active in sports throughout his life, Apy still played ice hockey and had become an accomplished, enthusiastic downhill skier and racer who just last winter spent 100 days on the slopes. In the other three seasons, he could be seen riding his bike through the N.H. countryside, or paddling the lakes in the kayak he recently built.
He leaves three brothers: Chester of Little Silver, N.J.; Edward of Sea Bright, N.J.; and Douglas of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Apy's wife of 12 years, Judith, lives in Wolfeboro with their three "fur children." He shared Judith's passion for rescuing dogs, and together they established Canine Guardians for Life, Inc. (www.CanineGuardiansforLife.org), a non-profit organization that has so far saved and found loving homes for more than 120 dogs. It is suggested that anyone wishing to make a contribution in memory of Art may contact them at P.O. Box 304, Wolfeboro, N.H. 03894.
Following cremation, a Holy Eucharist and celebration of Apy's life was held at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Wolfeboro. There will be a memorial service for family and friends in Red Bank, N.J. in April. Locally, Judith hopes to arrange a service of musical remembrance later in the spring or summer.
