Louis A. Bailey
FRANKLIN - Louise A. Bailey, 85, formerly of 25 Damy Drive in Franklin, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at the Mountain Ridge Health Care Center in Franklin.
She was born in Claremont, Oct. 10, 1915, daughter of Charles and Mary (Hull) Arnold. She moved to the Tilton-Northfield areas 70 years ago and had resided in Franklin for over 10 years.
She worked for several years with the former Tilton Dress Shop in Franklin, retiring in 1978. She later was a foster grandparent with the Tilton-Northfield School District.
She was a member of the St. Jude Episcopal Church in Franklin.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence Waldo Bailey, Sr., who died in 1964.
Her family includes a daughter, Gloria L. Pickering of Northfield; three sons, Clarence W. "Chuck" Bailey Jr. of Punta Gorda, Fla., David C. Bailey and Thomas R. Bailey, both of Northfield; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. in the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road in Tilton. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Memorial Home with burial to follow in Park Cemetery in Tilton.

George W. Pyle Jr.
PLYMOUTH, Mass. - George W. Pyle, Jr., 73, of Belmont, N.H., and formerly of Duxbury, Mass., died after a long illness, at Jordan Hospital on Monday, July 30, 2001.
Mr. Pyle was born on Feb. 5, 1928, in Ridley Park, Pa. He was the son of the late George W. Pyle and Geraldine (Scranton) Pyle of Northford, Conn.
Following graduation from Braintree High School in 1946, Mr. Pyle served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946-1948, and 1950-1951. He served on Midway Island. He received an Honorable Discharge. He worked at the U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot in Hingham, Mass., from 1951-1957 where he was elected and served as the only Employee Member of the Statutory Board of Review for Performance Ratings. He was presented a gold pin for outstanding public relations.
He attended Burdett College, Wentworth Institute, and received a certificate of graduation from Boston University’s College of Industrial Technology.
Mr. Pyle was employed by Colgate-Palmolive Co., Warner-Lambert Pharmaceutical Co., where he received the Annual President’s Merit and Leadership Award; Kaiser Jeep Sales Corp. as a District Manager; American Sugar Co. as a Territory Manager; and Curtis Circulation Co.
Mr. Pyle was elected to a three-year term as a Braintree, Mass., Town Meeting Member in 1961. He received the "Spoke Award" for being outstanding Jaycee from the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1960. He is a past president of the Duxbury Home and School Association.
His family includes five children, Virginia K. Freyermuth of Plymouth, Stephen G. Pyle of Nevada, David E. Pyle and Susan K. Dahlen, both of Duxbury, and Thomas G. Pyle of Norwell; 14 grandchildren; a sister, Alicia Goodhue of New Jersey; and his former wife, Pauline C. Pyle of Plymouth.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001 at Mayflower Cemetery, Duxbury, Mass., at 11:30 a.m.
Phyllis Smith
HAMILTON, Ontario, Canada - Phyllis Smith, 86, of Hamilton, a relative of area residents, died July 9, 2001, at home.
She was born in Westhoughton, England, the daughter of Frederick and Minnie (Blaundell) Harrison.
She met her husband during World War II in England, where she was a tracker and spotter for the British W.A.V.E.S. She and her husband loved to travel.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Edith and Elsie, and a grandson, Frederick Marlyn Smith, who died in 1972.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Frederick Alton Smith of Hamilton; a daughter, Margaret Bucca of Uxbridge, Mass.; two sons, Frederick S. Smith of Logansport, Ind., and Karl Vaughn Smith of Hamilton; a daughter-in-law, Judith M. Smith of Tilton, N.H.; 11 grandchildren, including Tamara M. Smith, Samantha S. Smith, and Laurena E. Smith, all of Tilton, N.H.; a sister, Dorothy of Africa; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Margaret E. Travers
READVILLE, Mass. - Margaret E. Travers, of Readville, formerly of Tilton, N.H., died on Sept. 30, 2001.
She was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary (Boland) Looney, and the wife of the late Major Louis E. Travers, USAAF (retired).
She is survived by her son, John E. Travers; nieces, Honoré Beletti and M. Cathleen Kendra; grandnieces, Dr. Caryn Kendra, Dr. Denise Kendra Gay, Marie Manning, and Nancy Omonte; great-grandniece, Dominique Kendra Gay.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001 at 3 p.m. at Christ Church in Hyde Park, Mass. Donations in her memory may be made to the Hyde Park Emergency Food Pantry, the Parish of Christ Church, or any organization providing services to disabled American veterans.
William J. Spalke
MOULTONBORO - William J. Spalke, 64, of Mallard Drive, died suddenly Sept. 29, 2001, at home.
Born in Lawrence, Mass., on Dec. 27, 1936, he was the son of James Edward and Sophie (Phillips) Spalke. He attended grammar school in Salem and Windham and graduated from Lawrence Central High School. He also graduated from Boston University.
He worked as a design builder, having built office space in the World Trade Center in New York City. He also was a commodities broker for a Boston firm.
He wintered in West Palm Beach, Fla., and enjoyed being on the water.
He was predeceased by a son, Theodore "Teddy" Spalke.
Survivors include one son, William P. Spalke of Cape Cod, Mass.; one sister, Geraldine Ingalls of North Hampton; one nephew; and his long-time companion, Gloria Fields of Moultonboro and West Palm Beach, Fla.
There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held in the Mayhew Funeral Home, Routes 3 and 104, Meredith, on Friday at 10 a.m. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association, 20 Merrimack St., Manchester, NH 03101.
Kenneth W. Newlen
BELMONT - Kenneth W. Newlen, 84, of 18 Kayla Drive, died at the Epsom Manor in Epsom, on Monday, Oct. 1, 2001. He was the widower of Genevieve (Rink) Newlen, who died in 2000.
Born Nov. 24, 1916, in Beavertown, Ohio, he was the son of the late John F. and Della (Beaver) Newlen.
Mr. Newlen lived in Ashland and Gilford before moving to Belmont. He was a designer draftsman engineer at Scott & Williams for several years. He also worked for Singer and also for Haines. He owned and operated Ken and Gene’s Cabins in Ashland for many years. He also taught mechanical drafting at the Vocational School in Laconia.
Survivors include a son, Kevin Newlen of Belmont; two daughters, Anna Marie Emerton of Maine and Judith Lee Williams of Virginia; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and two nieces.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Esther Minger of Ohio.
There will be no calling hours or funeral service.

Kathleen M. Wright
BRISTOL - Kathleen M. (Emmons) Wright, 82, of Alexandria, Va., and Bristol died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at the Alexandria Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Bristol, the daughter of Ralph and Myra (Robinson) Emmons. She graduated from Bristol High School.
She was the widow of Edward B. Wright, who died in August.
Mrs. Wright was a member of the Methodist Church in Franconia, Va. She was a 62-year member of Sawhegenit Chapter #52, Order of the Eastern Star of Bristol and a member of American Legion Auxiliary #26 of Bristol.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by three children, Sandra Fisk of Tewksbury, Mass., Dennis Wright of Highland, Md., and Terry Wright of Alexandria, Va.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Fred Emmons of Plymouth, George Emmons of Bristol and Fayette, Ohio, and Robert Emmons of Littleton; many nieces and nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be Thursday, Oct. 4, from 7-9 p.m. at the Emmons Funeral Home, 115 South Main St., Bristol. Eastern Star Services will be Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 5, at 10 a.m. at the Bristol Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Homeland Cemetery in Bristol. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater New Hampshire Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301.
Douglas C. MacLeod
BELMONT - Douglas C. MacLeod, 85, of 17 Magnolia Lane, died at Lakes Region General Hospital on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001. He was the widower of Evelyn (Rhoades) MacLeod, who died April 14, 2001.
Mr. MacLeod was born Dec. 13, 1915, in Cornish, the son of Vincent and Rose (Picknell) MacLeod. He lived in Ascutney, Vt., for several years before moving to Laconia, where he lived on Weirs Boulevard from 1962-1982. He then moved to Spofford, and in 1998 moved to Belmont.
Mr. MacLeod was a self-employed logger for many years. He worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Windsor, Vt., and was a carpenter for Pike Industries for 17 years, retiring in 1980.
Mr. MacLeod was a member of Connecticut River Grange #518 in Ascutney, Vt.; Calvin Coolidge Pomona Grange #29 of Wilder, Vt., and Vermont State Grange and the National Grange. He was also a member of the State and National Travel Grange.
Survivors include two sons, Carlton D. MacLeod of Belmont and John V. MacLeod of Exeter; four daughters, Dorothy E. Neal of Laconia, Margaret A. Normandin of Laconia, Marcileen M. Champagne of Meredith, and Carole M. Palmer of Belmont; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Arlene G. Small of Windsor, Vt.; and one niece and nephew.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen L. MacLeod in 1952.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, Oct. 8, from 6-8 p.m. in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. George Hankins-Hull, Spiritual Care Coordinator at Lakes Region General Hospital, will officiate. Burial will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the family lot in Ascutneyville Cemetery, Weathersfield, Vt.
