Gladys R. (Anthony) Ambrose Doane
NORTH SANDWICH - Gladys R. (Anthony) Ambrose Doane, 62, of Whiteface Intervale Road in North Sandwich, died Jan. 6, 2001, at her home after a long illness. With bravery and a cheerful, positive attitude, she outlived all expectations in her battle with cancer.
She was born in Tamworth April 12, 1938, the daughter of the late Arnold and Ruth (Berry) Anthony. She grew up in Tamworth, then moved to North Sandwich when she married the late Langdon J. Ambrose in 1955.
When Mr. Ambrose became disabled, along with caring for him, Gladys became a homeworker for Annalee Dolls of Meredith in 1986 and was known there as the "Deer Lady" because she made so many of them - over 150,000 of the 10-inch figures during the next 14 years, along with many other varieties. Along with being a doll maker, she was also an excellent cook and proficient with all types of needlework and crafts. Not to be house-bound, she loved the outdoors and always had flowers and vegetables growing in some fashion around the yards. During the farming years, she was familiar with the operation and maintenance of such equipment - a true "teammate" in all aspects of life.
Shortly after the death of Mr. Ambrose in 1988, her childhood sweetheart reappeared in her life and they were married in 1992 - 40 years to the month after their first meeting. They often referred to themselves as "Recycled Teenagers."
Gladys is survived by her husband, David Doane of North Sandwich; a son, Langdon Ambrose II of Tamworth; grandsons Jesse Ambrose and Joshua Ambrose, both of Sandwich; sisters Elva Parks of Tamworth, Shirley Frost of Freedom, and Janice Couch, of Cedar Vale, Kans.; brothers, Warren Anthony, David Anthony and Bruce Anthony, all of Tamworth, Stanley Anthony of Conway, and Chester Anthony of Yucaipe, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and others.
She was predeceased by a brother, Harry Anthony.
There will be an open house in her honor on Sunday, Jan. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the home of her sister, Elva Parks. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery, North Sandwich, later in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice of Southern Carroll County and Vicinity, P.O. Box 1620, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.
All of her life, Gladys gave of herself and two husbands, her family and her friends. Many will miss her ever-cheerful "hello" and ready smile.
