Mary Mudgett
LACONIA - Mary E. Mudgett, 87, of 153 Valley St., Lakeport, died at her home on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004. Mrs. Mudgett was the widow of Edward H. Mudgett, who died in 1981. Mrs. Mudgett was born July 31, 1917 in Loudon, the daughter of the late John W. and Lucy A. (Caster) Bachelder. She lived in Lakeport for 67 years. She was a member of the Laconia Advent Christian Church until it closed. She was a member of the Wicwas Lake Grange and was an avid magnet collector.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Donna L. and Dana Lowe of Lakeport; three sons and daughters-in-law, John W. and Marilyn Mudgett of New Port Richey, Fla.; Dennis W. and Ester Mudgett of San Diego, Calif. and Richard E. and Rose Mudgett of Laconia; 10 grandchildren, Doreen Tant of Tennessee, Cheryl Bigelow of Taiwan, Eric Mudgett of Laconia, Leah Winters of Florida, Michael Mudgett and Laura Pelchat, both of Laconia, Stephen Mudgett of Concord, Jane Mudgett of California, and Heidi Follansbee and William Lowe, both of Laconia; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, Hailey Rose Gove of Laconia, and several nephews and nieces.
In addition to her husband and her parents she was predeceased by two brothers, Clarence Bachelder and Albert Bachelder.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, from 6-8 p.m. at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, using the Whipple Avenue entrance.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at 11 a.m., also at the Funeral Home. The Rev. Sheldon York will officiate. Burial will follow in the family lot in Union Cemetery in Laconia. Frederick T. Toll
Fred Toll, Ward 3 city councilor, former teacher, longtime volunteer
LACONIA - Frederick "Fred" T. Toll, 60, of 34 Shore Drive, Laconia, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004. He was serving as the councilor from Ward 3 in Laconia at the time of his death.
Mr. Toll was born Aug. 28, 1944, in Concord, the son of Arthur E. and Helen (McEgan) Toll. He came to Laconia in 1961 from Berlin and graduated from Laconia High School in 1962. Mr. Toll earned his bachelor of arts degree from Bowdoin College in 1961 and his master's degree from Plymouth State College (now Plymouth State University). Mr. Toll spent two years in Nepal as a Peace Corps volunteer. He subsequently taught eighth-grade math at the Laconia Middle School and worked as a guidance counselor at the Laconia State School. Mr. Toll was active in New Hampshire Special Olympics for many years and served as that organization’s first paid executive director. Mr. Toll was an accomplished athlete and had a lifelong interest in sports, particularly golf, basketball and softball.
Mr. Toll dedicated many years of his life to civic and charitable causes. At the time of his passing, he was in his second term as a city councilor serving Ward 3. As councilor, he was serving on various committees and boards including the Planning Board, Police and Library Building Committee, Master Planning Committee, Capital Improvements Committee and was chairman of the Land and Building Committee. Mr. Toll was president of the Lake Winnisquam Watershed Association, chairman of the Laconia Trails with Rails Exploratory Committee (LTREC) and chairman of the Governor's Advisory Committee for Ahern State Park. He was also serving as a volunteer at the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Audubon at Prescott Farm.
Survivors include a brother, Arthur D. Toll of Baldwinsville, N.Y.; two sisters, Susan T. DeGregorio of Salem, and Sally T. Holder of Princeton, Mass.; seven nieces and nephews and a grandnephew and four grandnieces. He was predeceased by his father in 1983 and his mother in 1998.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., using the Carriage House entrance. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Joseph Church Wednesday Dec. 15, 2004 at 10 a.m. The Rev. Gary Kosmowski, pastor of the church will officiate. A reception will follow the Mass of Christian Burial at the Belknap Mill, Mill Plaza, Laconia. Burial will be in St. Lambert Cemetery at a later date. Herman J. Keniston
ASHLAND - Herman John Keniston, 76, of Whispering Pines, died Dec. 11, 2004, at the Epsom Manor in Epsom.
Born in Hill on Jan. 26, 1928, he was the son of Elmer J. and Georgia (Hill) Keniston.
He grew up in New Durham and attended New Durham Schools. He had been a resident of Ashland for nearly five decades.
He worked for the former Albany Paper Works and then for L.W. Packard, both in Ashland.
He was a member of the Ashland Baptist Church, the Dupuis-Cross American Legion Post, and the Plymouth Lodge of Elks.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a recipient of the Silver Star.
He was the husband of the late Harriet F. (Allen) Keniston, who died in 2000. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Elmer Keniston and Harold Keniston and by one sister Iva Keniston.
In his life, he loved wildlife, driving through the mountains, fishing and flower gardening. He was a very loved man who was very thoughtful, kind, loving, independent and stubborn.
Survivors include a son, James Keniston of Plymouth; a daughter, Roxanne Thompson of Ashland,; two grandchildren, Jennifer of Virginia Beach, Va., and Jonathan of Franklin.; one great-grandson; two brothers, Joseph Keniston of Alton and Freddie Keniston of Berlin.; several nieces and nephews; three stepchildren, Lillian Currier of Rindge, Kathy Williams of Gilsum and Harold Blair of Richmond.
Calling hours will be held in the Mayhew Funeral Home, 12 Langdon St., Plymouth on Tuesday 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the Ashland Baptist Church, Ashland, on Wednesday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Everett Palmer, pastor, will officiate. Spring burial will be held in the Green Grove Cemetery, Ashland.
Norma L. Guidi
DORCHESTER - Norma L. Guidi, 81, of 1700 NH Route 118, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004 at the Genesis Eldercare in Laconia.
She was born in Somerville, Mass., on Feb. 14, 1923, the daughter of the late Michael and Helena ( Hawkhurst ) Matarazzo.
Growing up in Medford, she attended school there before moving to Peabody, Mass., for several years. She had been a resident of Dorchester for the past three years.
Mrs. Guidi worked for the St. Francis Catholic School in Medford, Mass., for many years as a cook, and she was also a communicant there. She was the wife of the late Anthony J. Guidi, who died in 1989.
Survivors include a daughter, Jo Ellen Guidi of Dorchester; four grandsons, Edward Manzi of Woburn, Mass., David Manzi of Waltham, Mass., Christopher Manzi of Malden, Mass., and Anthony DiRusso of Dorchester; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Lisa M. Pierce
FRANKLIN - Lisa M. Pierce, 45, of River Street, died Dec. 11, 2004 at Franklin Hospital. Born in Concord, she was the daughter of Erwin Ames Sr. and Joanne (Irving) Ames.
She previously worked as a mental health specialist for New Hampshire Hospital. She enjoyed arts and crafts, including ceramics.
The family includes her husband of 26 years, Bruce A. Pierce of Franklin; two daughters, Amanda G. Hili of Queens, N.Y., and Sarah M. Pierce of Franklin; her mother, of Concord; three brothers, John A. Ames of Concord, Michael W. Ames of Tilton and Scotty R. Ames of Salem; two sisters, Carolyn L. Amrol of Concord and Dianna L. Huntoon of Concord; a grandson; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Robert A. Phinney, Sr.
SEABROOK - Robert A. Phinney, Sr., 65, of 24 Batchelder Rd., died Saturday, March 19, 2005 at Exeter Hospital after a long illness.
He was born in Freeport, Maine on July 14, 1939, the son of Ernest H. and Bertha (Gordon) Phinney. He spent his childhood in York and was a 1957 graduate of York High School.
He had worked in retail management for most of his life. He began his career in 1957 at W. T. Grant Department Store in Portsmouth, and later worked at the Gilford store until they closed in 1976. He also worked at J.J. Newberry, Grossman Lumber, Gerrity Lumber and Mr. Goodbuy’s in New Jersey. He started the York Street Bait and Tackle Shop in 1991. Most recently he was a manager of Cambridge Self-Storage in Cambridge, Mass.
He had lived in Laconia for twenty years before returning to the Seacoast. He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid reader and liked completing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. He was a former member of the Gilford Jaycees.
Survivors include his wife, Loyola Ann (Cockerille) Phinney of Seabrook. Two sons, Robert A. Phinney Jr. of Seabrook and Fred Pike of Laconia; two stepsons, John Fitzgerald of Las Vegas and James Fitzgerald of Laconia; four daughters, Robin Reade of Alton, Dawn Marie DiPietro of Gilford, Christina Durestant of Haverhill, Mass. and Mae Scott of Phoenix, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Vickie L. Fowler of Exeter; a sister, Patricia Foster of York, Maine; his former wife, Ann M. Phinney of Laconia; eleven grandchildren; two nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., York, Maine. Visiting hours will be from 10-11 a.m. prior to the funeral. A reception will follow the funeral in St. Aspinquid Masonic Hall. Burial will be Central Cemetery, Rye. Spencer LaMar Clope
CROSS PLAINS, Wisc. - Spencer LaMar Clope, age 95, passed away peacefully just before midnight, March 16, 2005, at the home of his daughter, Sara, in Cross Plains, Wisc. He was born in Homewood, Penn., on Thanksgiving day, Nov. 25, 1909, the son of Irving Spencer and Katherine Mary (Christensen) Clope. He had resided in Racine since 1924. In a college chemistry lecture, Grace Olive Johnson tapped him on the shoulder to ask the time---and the chemistry was perfect! They were united in marriage on April 28, 1939. A deeply religious couple, he and Grace were long-time members of the First United Methodist Church.
As a chemical engineer, he was employed by Young Radiator Co for 44 years, retiring in 1976. Shortly after joining the company, Young Radiator workers went on strike, and, as secretary of the labor union, he helped write the first union labor contract in Racine. With the help of a chemical engineering partner, he also formed his own company in 1933, the Analytical Research Chemical Laboratory, which at its peak, during World War II, employed six individuals in the old Baker Building in Downtown Racine. After the war, when the company was downsized, he moved the business to his home, retiring in 1984.
He was a long-time member of Belle City Lodge 92 Free and Accepted Masons, the Milwaukee Tripoli Shrine, and the Milwaukee Scottish Rite, serving as Most Wise Master of the Chapter of Rose Croix. He was elected to the 33rd degree which entitled him to a position of Honorary Member of the Supreme Council of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction.
He was an avid Ham radio operator from 1934 until shortly before his death. In the early 1950’s, his interest in RTTY (radio teletype) led to his becoming the second Amateur Radio RTTY station in the state.
As a young man, he found joy in singing. He sang in the choirs of First Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church, and a Congregational Church. He was also a charter member of the Mastersingers Chorus of Racine. The Theater was also in his blood. He participated in a variety of amateur productions and especially enjoyed, and excelled in, the elaborate ritual work of the Scottish Rite.
He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Susan (Allen) Hillman of Laconia; Sara (Bob) Long of Cross Plains, Wisc.; and David (Jane) Clope of Peoria, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brothers, Homer and Hobart, his wife, Grace (July 4, 1980), and his infant daughter, Katherine Anne.
James Darrell Jordan
James Darrell Jordan, 49, of N. Pitt Street, Carlisle, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
He was born May 18, 1955 in Portland, Ore., the son of the late Royal A. and Elva Coder Jordan. He was educated at Brighton High School in Massachusetts and was employed at Carlisle Tire and Wheel for sixyears. He was a former resident of Laconia.
He is survived by his companion of 12 years, Shirley Laughman of Carlisle; three sons, Shane Jordan of Laconia, Braden Jordan of Meredith and Quade Jordan of Gilford; two daughters, Corrine Jutton of Meredith and Bronwyn Jenna of Laconia; a sister, Janice Hill of Peterboro; three granddaughters, Abigale Jutton, Lydia Jordan and Nicole Jordan.
The family has chosen to respect his wish to have no services or viewing. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Nancy J. Dolan
WEST ALTON - Mrs. Nancy J. Dolan 58, of 85 Railroad Ave. West Alton, died at her home Sunday March 20, 2005 after a 12 year courageous battle with breast cancer.
She was born Nov. 5, 1946 in Arlington, Mass., the daughter of John Francis and Ann Loretta (McDermott) Sefton. She had been a resident of West Alton for the past 18 years coming from Arlington.
She was the Administrative Assistant at the New Hampshire Community Technical College in Laconia until January of 2005. She had been employed at the college for the past 12 years.
She was a communicant of St. Joseph Parish in Belmont. She was a member of the Lakes Region Management Club in Laconia. Survivors include her husband David J. Dolan, Sr. of West Alton; a son, David J. Dolan, Jr. of Sanbornton; two grandchildren, Dana and Sierra; two brothers, John Sefton of Carlisle, Mass. and Paul Sefton of N.J.; a niece and four nephews and all of her dear friends at the NHCTC, Laconia.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday March 22, 2005 from 4-7 p.m. at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home 164 Pleasant St., Laconia using the Carriage House entrance.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Parish, 96 Main St., Belmont on Wednesday March 23, 2005. Burial will follow in Bayside Cemetery, Laconia.

Edwin Freeman Burt
He was born in Hanover on Sept. 10, 1918, the son of Fred and Nettie (Sawyer) Burt. He was raised in Laconia where he lived for several years. He served in the National Guard from 1937 until 1940. In 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. During World War II, he served in the Asiatic Pacific area including Pearl Harbor, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands, Guam, and the Marianas Islands.
Following the War, he attended school in Denver, Colo. training to become an engineer with the Boston & Maine Railroad. He worked for the Boston & Maine for 33 years. He later served as chief of police in New London and later in Bennington for 10 years. He was a 50-year member of Mt. Lebanon Lodge 32 F & AM in Laconia. He was Councilman in the Knights Templar and was a member of Valley of Concord and Valley of Nashua with all degrees. He was also a longtime member of The Shriners.
He was a life member of VFW Post 1698 in Franklin, 40 & 8, and was a longtime American Legion member. He was a life member of MOCA and was past Seam Squirrel and Grand Inspector.
He was a security officer for the Prescription Center in Concord for over 30 years until retiring two years ago.
Family members include his wife of 30 years, Eletha "Bonnie" Burt of Franklin; a daughter, Joan Kouloungis of Laconia; four stepdaughters, Sandra Laughy and Gail Gullage, both of Northfield; Tanis Gates of Belmont; and Doreen Boisvert of Gilmanton; several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be Tuesday, March 22, 2005 from 6-8 p.m. at Thibault-Neun Funeral Home, 143 Franklin St., Franklin. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 23 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in the N.H. State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen.
