H. Alton Bryant
WELLS, Maine - H. Alton Bryant, 94, of Hobbs Farm Road, Wells, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at Riverridge in Kennebunk.
He was born May 1, 1906, in Carroll, the son of George M. and Carrie Whitney Bryant.
He was a farmer, a woodsman, and had been employed at Dracy Company in North Berwick. Mr. Bryant also worked under the Green Thumb Program as a school custodian and grounds keeper at the Wells Recreation Center.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ruth Stables Bryant of Wells; a son, Robert Bryant of Wells; two daughters, Helen Andrews of Kittery and Mary Johnson of Merrimac, N.H.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Strickland and Ella Welch, both of Kennebunk and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9 at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick, where a funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Robert G. Cole Sr. of the Bethel Christian church will officiate. Spring interment in Ocean View Cemetery in Wells.
Gerard Demers
SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Gerard L. Demers, 79, of 124 Route 236, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center in Dover.
Born in South Berwick on Nov. 16, 1921, the son of Louis and Amanda (Bisson) Demers and has lived here all of his lifetime.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and a member of the Rollinsford Post No. 47 American Legion.
Gerard was a self-employed consultant and was a snowmobile area coordinator for 17 towns for the Maine Association. He was a member of the Trail Riders Snowmobile Club and was a safety snowmobile instructor.
He founded the Chickadee Chapter of the Good Sam Club of American Camper Association, was a member and past president of the White Mountain Chapter of the North America Family Campers Association. He was also past president and director of the Salmon Falls River Beagle Club.
He was a member of the South Berwick Fire Department for 15 years, and was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church.
He is survived by his wife of more than 58 years, Rita (Toland) Demers of South Berwick; two sisters, Mary Cote of South Berwick and Marie Boucher both of Dover, N.H. and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother Leo Demers and a sister Rose Roy.
There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Michael’s Church, Young St., with the Rev. Philip Tracy, pastor officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Rollinsford, N.H. in the spring.

James Fontaine
NORTH BERWICK, Maine - James T. Fontaine, 48, of 29 Turkey St. died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001 at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a long illness.
He was born on Jan. 24, 1953, in Portsmouth, N.H., the son of Armand W. and Nena (Mullin) Fontaine and was a graduate of York High School.
Mr. Fontaine had worked in the maintenance department for Wheelabrator Corporation in Hampton, N.H. for many years.
He had formerly resided with his grandparents, James "Vern" and Virginia Mullin in York Harbor. He enjoyed going to local flea markets.
Survivors include his father, Armand W. Fontaine of Exeter, N.H.; his mother, Nena Conley of Somersworth, N.H.; and two brothers, Eric Fontaine of Exeter, N.H. and Jason Voge of Dover, N.H.; three sisters, Gina Davis of Farmington, N.H. Michelle Yuskis of Concord, N.H.; and Melissa Voge of Somersworth, N.H. and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours are this evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. The funeral will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mae Hooper
DOVER - Mae A. Hooper, 94, of Katie Lane died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at her residence.
Born in Manhattan, N.Y., in 1905, she was the daughter of Martin Gilmartin and Nellie Maloney.
As a wife and mother she lived most of her life in central New Jersey and moved to Dover in 1994 to be closer to her family.
She attended First Parish Church of Dover.
The widow of Frank Lyne Hooper who died in 1978, survivors include two daughters, Virginia Johnson of Barrington and Dorothea D. Hooper of Dover; three grandchildren, Lynn Allen of Durham, Eric Johnson of Dover and Terry Carter of Christiansburg, Va.; seven great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Emily and Hannah Allen of Durham, Alecia, Christopher and Michelle Johnson of Dover.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will take place at a time to be announced at First Parish Church Congregational, Central Ave., Dover.
Burial will take place in Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains, N. J. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wentworth-Douglass Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care, 789 Central Ave., Dover NH 03820. Loren Kannenberg
SHAPLEIGH, Maine - Loren F. Kannenberg, 87, of Coley Trafton Road, died Tuesday, February 6, 2001, at Greenwood Center, Sanford.
He was born October 1, 1913 in Oak Park, Ill., the son of Baldwin Henry and Sarah (Cook) Kannenberg.
Mr. Kannenberg spent his boyhood years in New Castle, Pa. and most of his adult life in Riverside, Conn. He moved to Shapleigh in 1990 to be near his son and his family.
He was a 1938 MBA graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
For 37 years he worked for the former American Can Company in New York City and later at the corporate headquarters in Greenwich, Conn. At the time of his retirement he was director of management training and development.
Following retirement, he continued his career as a consultant to General Electric Corporation in Crotonville, NY.
During World War II, Mr. Kannenberg was a major in the Army Air Corps, where he was a member of the 8th Air Force, 2nd Division, 467th Bomb Group, stationed in Rackeath, England.
During his years in Shapleigh, he participated in many community activities. He was a member and former deacon at the First Baptist Church of Shapleigh, a volunteer worker at Goodall Hospital in Sanford, and at the Shapleigh Memorial School in their reading skills program. He was a trustee of the Shapleigh Community Library and a member of Springvale Lodge No. 190, AF & AM. He was as a member of the Mousam Valley Chapter of the AARP, the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association and the Small Woodlot Owners Association of Maine.
Mr. Kannenberg’s many varied interests during his lifetime included sailing and boating, gardening, curling, model building and studying many subjects at the University of Maine Extension during his later years. He was a lifelong student who loved to learn.
He was predeceased by his wife, Josephine Buhl Kannenberg in 1978.
He is survived by a son, Kent, of Shapleigh; a daughter, Mrs. Stuart (Kay) Martin of Sharon, Mass.; a sister, Jane L. Kannenberg of Yorba Linda, Calif.; and two granddaughters, Sara and Amy Kannenberg of Shapleigh.
Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale, where a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Pastor Les Dorr of the Shapleigh Corner Baptist Church will officiate, assisted by The Rev. Nelson Eilliott. A Masonic ritualistic service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
A memorial service will be held at a time and date to be announced at the 1st Congregational Church of Greenwich, Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich, Conn. and interment will be in the Columbarium of the church.
Richard Labrie
DOVER - Richard Labrie, 59, of 14 Everett St. died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at his home following his fight with cancer.
He was born in Dover on June 3, 1941, the son of Peter Joseph and Amanda Lillian (Gregoire) Labrie. He attended Dover schools and was a graduate of Dover High School. After high school, he entered the U. S. Navy and served abroad the U.S.S. Ashland.
Mr. Labrie was a self-employed plumber for over 30 years before going to work for R.M.H. Properties Inc. in Sanford, Maine.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time at his camp.
Surviving is his wife of 36 years, Priscilla (Boucher) Labrie, three daughters and their husbands, Catherine Tsoukalas and her husband James, Michelle Shaheen and her husband Mark all of Dover, Lisa Lemay and her husband Thomas of Sanford, Maine; two brothers, Norman Labrie (Dick’s twin) of Rollinsford, and Roland Labrie of Portsmouth; and a sister, Rita Green of Long Beach, Calif.; six grandchildren, Amy and James Tsoukalas, Andrew Labrie, Alicia Shaheen and Christopher and Jeffrey Lemay and nieces and nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Leonard Labrie.
Relatives and friends are invited to call Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Charles Church, 577 Central Ave., with the Rev. Paul Gregoire, pastor as celebrant. Burial will be private in St. Mary New Cemetery.

Roger Ramsdell
KITTERY, Maine - Roger Pollard Ramsdell, 79, of Palmer Ave., and husband of Lessie Ann (Pemberton) Ramsdell died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at the Harbor Home after a long illness.
He was born in York on July 2, 1929, the son of Clarence and Maude (Duprey) Ramsdell and graduated from York High School. In his teenage years, Mr. Ramsdell was a logger.
Mr. Ramsdell was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army for 20 years serving in both the Vietnam War and Korean Conflict. From 1971 to 1977 he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a pneumatic tool operator. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, working around the house and especially his grandchildren. He was a member of the American Legion in York and the V.F.W. in Portsmouth.
Survivors include his wife, Lessie Ann (Pemberton) Ramsdell of Kittery; two sons, Larry Riley of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Steven P. and his wife, Ramona Ramsdell of South Berwick; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Kenneth (Julia) Ramsdell of Eliot; first cousin, Richard Ramsdell of Cape Neddick with whom he grew up with; four grandchildren; Cory Dean Ramsdell, Ann Marie Ramsdell, Brandon Ramsdell and Jessica Ramsdell; four stepgrandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Ramsdell was predeceased by two sons, Kenneth M. Ramsdell who died in 1987 and Roger D. Ramsdell who died in 1979; and by two brothers, Clarence, Jr. and Kenneth George Ramsdell.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Visiting hours are 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Family flowers only.

Helen Sherman
DURHAM - Helen E. Sherman, 90, of Packers Falls Road, died Feb. 7, 2001, at Riverside Rest Home, Dover, where she had resided for just under two years.
Born June 4, 1910, in Wilksbarre, Pa., she was the daughter of John and Mary (Babcock) Gill. She lived in Dover for 10 years before moving to Durham 21 years ago.
Mrs. Sherman lived in Detroit, Mich. for many years, where she worked as a cosmetologist in various beauty shops.
She had attended St. Joseph’s Church in Dover.
She was predeceased by her husband, Oliver O. Sherman who died in 1990, and her son, James Sherman.
Survivors include a grandson, Mark Sherman.
There are no calling hours.
Private burial will be in the spring at Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket. The Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
