Mary Elizabeth (Legro) Benford
Mary Elizabeth (Legro) Benford died January 17, 2001 in Havenwood-Heritage Heights retirement home in Concord, NH. She was 84.
She was born in Minneapolis, MN on October 15, 1916, daughter of Frank and Edith (Haines) Legro, who soon returned to their New England roots in Marblehead, MA. Mary spent the rest of her life in New England.
She was educated in the Swampscott, MA public schools and graduated from Swampscott High School in 1934. After graduation she worked at a series of occupations that included the business offices of the B & M Railroad, nursing and secretarial work in a pediatrician's office, and a secretarial post with General Electric in Lynn, MA. On July 17, 1953 she married Bob Benford. Together, they raised two sons; Ted Kausel, Jr., of Harwinton, CT, and Steven Benford of Johnson, VT.
They lived in Swampscott and she worked as a secretary in the night school guidance office. She was active in Boy Scouting programs with both boys, and with activities in the First Church in Swampscott couples club and annual fair. She developed an interest in handicrafts of several types and developed her skills enough to being teaching small groups when the family moved to Lynnfield in 1961. Her skill with dried flowers led her to a specialty in decorated and framed wedding invitations. There are about a hundred of these in the local area, and some farther away. She was active in the church fairs again in Lynnfield and joined the Center Garden Club, where she became president and initiated new fund raising methods.
In 1976 the family purchased waterfront property on Silver Lake in Madison, NH, and retired there in 1980. By this time the family had grown with seven grandchildren, everybody pitching in to maintain and operate the facility, with Mary as matriarch. Her home and family were her life.
In 1999, with the family spread from Vermont to Ohio and the grandparents in their eighties, the property was sold. Mary and Bob moved south to Havenwood, part of the complex of cottages, assisted living and nursing care facilities. In the fall of 2000 Mary entered full time residence in a comfortable setting, with skilled and caring attendants. She died peacefully there, surrounded by her family.
Havenwood will host a remembrance service at 3:00 PM on Feb. 13 for her and others. A special gathering of her friends and family will be held later in the spring in Conway, NH.
