Gladys Jackson Paret
CHESHIRE, Conn. - Gladys Jackson Paret, 79, of Cheshire, Conn., died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at the Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford, Conn.
She was born May 3, 1921, in Babylon, Long Island, and was the daughter of the late Rev. William S. Jackson and Evangeline Harper Jackson.
She attended school in Connecticut and graduated from Hamden High School in 1938. She attended Douglas College of Rutgers University, receiving a bachelor of science degree in 1942. After teaching mathematics in Perthamboy and Haddonfield high schools for several years, she was employed by Equitable Life Insurance Co., and Vick Chemical Co., in New York City as an accountant, from which she retired.
She was the wife of the late Frank L. Paret, M.D.
She lived in Piscataway, N.J., for 23 years and raised four children. She was active in Christ Episcopal Church and in the League of Women Voters, chairman of the Shade Tree Commission and in the PTA, the Junior Guild of Christ Church, the Trowel Club and became an accomplished artist.
Mrs. Paret moved to Silver Lake, NH, with her family in 1969 and became active in the Silver Lake Sailing Club, Madison Garden Club and volunteered at Madison Library, and she was a founding member of the St. Margaret's Anglican Church in Conway.
She is survived by four children, Dr. Ronald S. Paret, MD, of Cheshire, Conn., Brian K. Paret, of Conway, Karen Arnold, of Littleton, Colo., and Dana Charles, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 13, at 11 a.m. in St. Margaret's Church in Conway. The Stempien Funeral Home in Meriden, Conn., is in charge of arrangements.
Vera "B" Smith Fisher Kiburtz
MADISON - Vera "B" Smith Fisher Kiburtz, 90, of Madison, died on June 1, 2000, at her daughter's home.
She was born on Aug. 9, 1909, in Lunenburg, Vt., the daughter of the late George and Clytie (Hartshorn) Smith.
She attended Laconia High School at the same time as her daughter in the early 1940s. She was one of the first adults ever admitted to attend classes with high school students. She had a varied work history from her youth on. In the late 1930s, she and her first husband operated the laundry for the Eastern Slope Inn in North Conway. She was a ship fitter or welder working on the Liberty Ships at the Portland Shipyard during World War II. She later worked at the Kezar Falls Woolen Mill in Kezar Falls, Maine, and at the GE plant in Limerick, Maine. She was a member of Anna Stickney Chapter of the DAR in North Conway and a member of the Eastern Star in Maine.
Family members include her husband, Robert Kiburtz; one son, Bernard (Joyce) Fisher of Middletown, Conn. and Yuma, Ariz.; two daughters, Beverly Boyden of Claremont, and Florida, and Bernadette Edmunds of Madison; two stepsons, Allan Kiburtz of Simi Valley, Calif., and Robert S. Kiburtz of Fla.; 16 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, William K. Fisher Sr. in 1957, and a son, William K. Fisher Jr. in 1973.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care of Northern Carroll County, P.O. Box 432, North Conway, N.H. 03860. There will be no memorial service at this time.
The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.
James Howard Farrington
James Howard Farrington, 52, formerly of Lovell, Maine died Friday May 12, 2000 in Coshocton, Ohio. He was born June 13, 1947 in Lovell the son of Ralph and Barbara Poole Farrington and was educated in Fryeburg schools. He worked in a sawmill until he became disabled.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by two brothers, Lawrence and Ralph Farrington Sr. Survivors include two daughters Lisa M. Farrington of Fryeburg and Wendy Whitelaw and husband Donald Jr., of Center Conway; two brothers Robert Farrington of Lovell and Richard Farrington of Lovell; one sister, Dottie Smith of Fryeburg; two grandchildren, Olivia and Nicolas.
A memorial graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday May 23, 2000 at No. 4 Cemetery in Lovell, with the Rev. Violet Eastman officiating. Arrangement are with Wood Funeral Home.
James D. Cahill Jr.
JACKSON - James D. Cahill Jr., of Jackson, died at home on May 16, 2000, after a long struggle with cancer.
He was born in 1926, in Bradford, Mass., the son of the late J. Dalton Cahill and the late Bertha (Dickens) Cahill. He attended Haverhill High School and graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover in 1944. He entered the U.S. Naval Officers' Program at Tufts College in that year and received his commission and bachelors' degree in mechanical engineering in 1947.
After active duty aboard the U.S.S. Pasadena in 1948, he joined his father at the J. D. Cahill Company, a paperboard manufacturing concern established in 1939, which has been headquartered in Hampton since 1960. He served as president of the company from 1960-87, and from then until his death as its chairman and CEO. During the 1970s he served as a director of the Specialty Packaging and Industrial Division of the American Paper Institute and as a trustee of the Mayhew Program of Bristol.
He ran track at Andover and sang with the glee clubs at Andover and Tufts. He was a respectable pianist, self-taught, playing by ear. In the late 1940s, he began skiing at Thorn Mountain and Cranmore in the Mount Washington Valley, and returned to the valley with his family in 1966 to ski many more years at Tyrol and Black. In 1987, he made Jackson his home after having lived in North Hampton for more than 25 years.
In July 1966, with a 3 wood and a Titleist 6, he hit a hole-in-one on the 192-yard old ninth hole at Abenaqui Country Club in Rye Beach. He served as the club's treasurer for several years. He was also a member of the North River Club in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish and of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and a Third Degree Knight of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Elizabeth (Boland) Cahill; his sister, Virginia Weldon of North Hampton; sons, Jim III of Concord and Bill and Jake of North Hampton; daughters, Ann Garry of North Hampton and Mary Beth Warlick of Kennebunkport, Maine; 11 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of sending flowers, please honor his memory with contributions to the charities of your choice.
A private Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Mountains in North Conway and a commitment service for immediate family will be held in Jackson. Memorial masses will be offered during the summer in Jackson and in Rye Beach, to which friends will be welcome.

Ethelwyn L. Steadman
WOLFEBORO - Ethelwyn L. Steadman, 92, of Sun Bridge Healthcare of Wolfeboro of Wolfeboro, died May 14, 2000, at Huggins Hospital.
She was born December 16, 1907, in Quebec, Canada. Ethelwyn graduated from Burdett College, Boston, Mass. She and her husband moved to New Hampshire in 1953, where she had been the tax collector in Tuftonboro for 21 years before retiring. She was a member of the Hikers Club, Helping Hand Hall and various church organizations.
She is survived by two granddaughters, Linda G. Eldridge, Tamworth and Lori Steadman, Northfield; a grandson, Steve Steadman, Wolfeboro; three great-grandsons, Kenny Steadman, T. J. Eldridge, Gary Diamond; two great-granddaughters, Sasha Steadman and Asia Leigh Steadman. She was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Kenton E. Steadman Sr., a son, Kenton E. Steadman Jr., and a grandson, Ricky A. Steadman.
Calling hours will be Thursday, May 18, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Lord Funeral Home, Route 28, Wolfeboro. A funeral service will be Friday, May 19, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Townhouse Cemetery, Tuftonboro.
Ernest C. Warren
EAST BALDWIN, Maine - Ernest C. Warren, 76, of Old Piquawket Road, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, at Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 13 1924, in Baldwin, Maine, a son of Neil and Clara L. Bauchman Warren.
Mr. Warren was educated in Baldwin schools. He worked as a truck driver at Beal's Furniture of Portland, Maine; and as a night watchman at Beal's Furniture of East Baldwin and at Pulsifer Feed of East Baldwin. He was a member of the East Baldwin Congregational Church.
He is survived by his former wife, Isabel A. Chick Warren, Sanford, Maine; a son and daughter in law, Alton N. and Leta Warren, Windsor, Maine; three daughters, Louise I. Burgess, Long Beach Calif., Arlene G. Albert, Sanford, Maine, and Elsie M. Warren, Fryeburg; one brother and sister in law, Carl and Barbara Warren, Fryeburg; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A visiting hour will be held at 11 a.m. Friday followed by a funeral service at noon at the East Baldwin Congregational Church. Pastor Gregory Young will officiate. Arrangements are by Neal and York Funeral Home, Kezar Falls, Maine.
Paul D. Ward
CONWAY - Paul D. Ward, 73, of Conway died May 15, 2000, at his home following a long illness.
Born in Providence, R.I., the son of Paul and Wilda (Neal) Ward, he lived in the Quincy, Mass., area most of his life before moving to Conway in 1987.
He graduated from Boston Technical High School in 1945.
Mr. Ward had been employed by the Boston Gas Company for 23 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of North Conway American Legion Post 95 and the VFW in Albany. He was also an avid golfer and a member of the North Conway Club.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ruth (Kilpatrick) Ward of Conway, and several cousins and aunts, including Helen Hill of Fryeburg.

Donald Walter Publicover
Donald Walter Publicover, of Bradford, NH, died May 5, 2000, at Concord Hospital. He was 72.
Mr. Publicover was born on May 26, 1927, in Wellesley, Mass., to Henry and Beulah (Hebb) Publicover of Newton, Mass. After serving in the U.S. Army he returned to Newton, and in 1951 he married Joanne Low of Hanover. In 1961 the couple moved to Framingham, Mass., where they raised their two sons. In 1975 they moved to Nashua, NH. Following his wife's death in 1992, Mr. Publicover moved to Bradford, NH.
Mr. Publicover spent over 40 years working in the construction industry. He supervised the construction of dozens of commercial and residential buildings in eastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, including the Park Square Plaza complex in Boston, which at the time of its construction included the largest piece of pre-cast concrete ever installed anywhere in the world. At the end of his career he worked as an independent consultant in the field of construction safety, conducting training sessions and job site inspections.
Throughout his life Mr. Publicover gave freely of his time as a volunteer. During his sons' youth he spent many years as a Boy Scout leader and taught Sunday school at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Framingham. Following his retirement he served for many years with New Hampshire's Long Term Care Volunteer Ombudsman Program. He was well known to residents of the Merriman House and the Clipper Home, where he visited with residents and served as an advocate for residents' concerns. He also volunteered with New Hampshire's Meals on Wheels and Hospice Care programs and was active in the Bradford Seniors Rally.
Mr. Publicover enjoyed traveling and made several trips to both Bermuda and Nova Scotia, his family's ancestral homeland. He also enjoyed camping and deep-sea fishing and was an avid stamp collector.
Mr. Publicover leaves his two sons, David A. Publicover of Bartlett, NH, and Matthew S. Publicover of Merrimack, NH; two grandchildren, Andrew S. and Ian M. Publicover of Merrimack; and several nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 1740 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10019.
Alan Knox
BARRE, Vt. - Alan Knox, 53, of Vermont, died April 27, 2000.
He graduated from Spaulding High School in Rochester where he was born.
Knox received a Purple Heart while serving in Vietnam with the Marine Corps.
Knox was predeceased by his father, Edward C. Knox, who died in a farm accident in 1964. He was also predeceased by a brother, Carl Knox, who died in a car accident in 1965.
Family members include his mother, Elaine E. Knox of Newmarket; two brothers, Bruce E. Knox of Haverhill, Mass., and Brent E. Knox of Moultonboro; and two sisters, Brenda E. Anthony of Tamworth, and Donna E. Knox of Conway.
Robert O. Sylvia
TAMWORTH - Robert O. Sylvia, 86, died Friday May 12 2000 after a brief illness. He was the husband of Martha Turner Sylvia and the son of the later Roger J. and Ione T. Sylvia.
Born in Medford, Mass., he was a longtime resident of South Dartmouth, Mass. where he was a successful Charter Life Underwriter, one of the areas first, for Guardian Life Insurance until his retirement to Tamworth in 1977.
Mr. Sylvia was a W.W. II veteran where he was a Chief Warrant Officer in the Army Aircorp in command of an Air Sea Rescue craft.
He graduated from Proctor Academy and St. Lawrence University where he was a wrestler and all around athlete. During his college ears he was a big band leader while playing the drums. Mr. Sylvia set a record at the age of 15 for swimming the mouth of the Sakonnet River in Rhode Island. He loved tennis, golf and coaching his four sons in basketball. He was also an Eagle Scout.
Mr. Sylvia was a member of the Tamworth Historical Society, the Board of Directors of Carroll County Health and the New Hampshire League of Craftsmen. He was appointed by the Governor of New Hampshire to the Board of Overseers of New Hampshire Nursing Homes. In South Dartmouth he was a member of the New Bedford Yacht Club, Wamsutta Club and the Kiwannis Club.
He was well known around Tamworth for making wooden children's toys and more often than not giving them away to needy children.
He survived by his wife and three sons, Tim Sylvia of Mattapoisett, Andy Sylvia of Athens, Ohio and Bob Sylvia of Damariscotta, Maine; two granddaughters and five grandsons and one great-grandsons.
His memorial service will be Sunday, May 21 at 4 p.m. at the Congregation Church in Tamworth.
