Edward H. Doering
BROWNFIELD, Maine - Edward H. Doering, 79, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at his home in Brownfield.
He was born in New York, N.Y., the son of Edward L. and Grace Hutchinson Doering. His early education was in New York and he attended Iowa State University on a football scholarship. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. During the war he was a bomber pilot and after the war he flew relief supplies into Africa. He moved to Maine in the early 1960s and worked for Paris Manufacturing. He was a graphic designer for the Yield House and from 1982 to 1999 worked for the Maine Information Bureau in Fryeburg. He was an accomplished artist and painter, especially adept at painting animals. His hobbies were going to the horse races and eating at Fandangle's in North Conway. There is no family. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in Brownfield. Arrangements are with Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.
Virginia B. Staples
PORTLAND, Maine - Virginia B. Staples, 79, of 328 Turkey Street in Tamworth, wife of Walter S. Staples, died Jan. 30, 2000, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.
Born in Round Pond, Maine on April 11, 1920, she was a daughter of Earl G. and Lousie (Harriman) Bennett and was a 1936 graduate of Scarborough High School. She also attended the Eliot High Post Graduate Program.
She moved to Eliot in 1936 and lived there until 1968 when she moved to Tamworth. Mrs. Staples worked for General Electric for 19 years. She also worked as a hostess for Valee's in Kittery, Maine.
She is survived by her husband; two sons, John B. Barnard, of Eliot, Maine, and Tilden Barnard, of Somersworth; two daughters, Ruth Ann Sheffer, of South Berwick, Maine, and Virginia Collier, of Jeanette, Pa.; four step-sons, Daniel V. Staples, of Milford, Mass., Russell C. Staples, of Tamworth, James P. Staples, of Loudon, and Mark A. Staples, of Bellingham, Mass.; four step-daughters, Mary J. Holladay, Barbara G. Meader, Rebekah S. Pugh and Diane S. Salazar, all of Tamworth; seven grand-children; one great-granddaughter; 12 step-grandchildren; seven step great grand children; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Judith Barnard, and a sister, Elizabeth Libby.
Relatives and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Eliot United Methodist Church, Eliot, Maine, where a funeral will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. Donations may be made in her memory to the Eliot United Methodist Church, 60 Dow Highway, Eliot, Maine, 03903, or to the Tamworth Community Nursing Association, P.O. Vellie M. Reed
FRYEBURG, Maine - Vellie M. Reed, 83, of Dana Street in Fryeburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway.
She was born in West Fryeburg, the daughter of Herman and Hannah Larson Gilman, and graduated from Fryeburg Academy in the class of 1933. From 1958-1972 she and her husband Harold W. Reed owned and ran the Blacksmith Restaurant in Fryeburg. She later worked 17 years for Northland Shoe Company. She was a member of the Fryeburg New Church and the Church Alliance. Her husband died in 1976.
She is survived by two sons, John H. Reed of Fryeburg, Maine, and James H. Reed of Denmark, Maine; two daughters, Sandra L. Reed of Portland, Ore., and Joanne Mathews of Fryeburg, Maine; one brother, Jesse Gilman of West Fryeburg; two sisters, Doris McAllister of North Waterford, and Marion Mandoff of South Portland; eight grandchildren and three great-grand children.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in Fryeburg.

Madeline H. Sanborn
FRYEBURG, Maine - Madeline H. Sanborn, 83, of Pleasant Street in Fryeburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at the Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital in Bridgton.
She was born in Brownfield the daughter of Ernest and Erla Dennett Hill and was educated in Brownfield and graduated from Fryeburg Academy class of l935.
Madeline lived in Fryeburg most of her life and worked for the old Chaffee Box Shop, Hall and Smith Lumber Mill, Northland Shoe Company and Jeff's Cabinets. She was a member and past president and a Gold Star Mother of the Fryeburg-Lovell VFW Auxiliary.
Her husband, Raymond L. Sanborn, died in 1988. She is survived by two sons, David C. Tripp, of Greenwood, Maine, and Ronald (Butch) Sanborn, of Conway; one step-son James (Bill) Sanborn of Denmark, Maine; a sister, Ernestine Walker, of Brownfield, 14 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. She was also predeceased by a son, Milton R. Tripp Jr.; a daughter, Martha Tripp Leach, a step-son, R. Frances Sanborn; a sister, Fannie McAllister; and a brother, James Hill.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Fryeburg-Lovell VFW Hall in Lovell with the Rev. Violet Eastman officiating.

Angeline Stearns
CHOCORUA - Angeline (Guerriero) Stearns, 79, of Route 16, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at her home after a period of failing health.
She was born Feb. 15, 1920, in Hartford, Conn., and had lived in Chocorua for the past 40 years. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Center Ossipee.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Richard A. Stearns of Chocorua; a son, Wayne R. Stearns, Sr. Knoxville, Tenn.; a grandson, Wayne R. Stearns Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a brother, John Guerriero of Windsor, Conn.
Calling hours will be Thursday 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Lord Funeral Home, Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Center Ossipee. Burial will be in the Chocorua Cemetery in the spring.

Michael F. Ulchak
QUINCY, Mass. - Michael F. Ulchak, 87, of Quincy, Mass., died on Jan. 19, 2000.
Ulchak was born in Boston, Mass. He graduated from Mechanic Arts High School in Boston. He was owner of Village Upholstery, a cabinet and refinishing store in Brookline before going to work at the Charlestown Shipyard. While at the shipyard he worked as a sailmaker, boilmaker, pipe fitter and upholsterer. In preparation for the bicentennial celebration, he worked on the sails of the U.S.S. Constitution. He was a longtime and proud homeowner of the South End and was a member of the Bradford Street Neighborhood Association. An avid bowler, he belonged to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross Men's Bowling League and the Charlestown Bunker Hill Bowling League. He spent his summers in Henniker.
Ulchak was husband to Olga (Remick/Hrymak) Ulchak and the father of Robert M. Ulchak of Wollaston, Mass., Linda N. Ulchak Pietkiewicz of Jackson and John T. Ulchak of Hingham. Ulchak was a brother to Stephen, Joseph, Horace, Mary Prodanis and Sophie Gallagher. Grandchildren include Taj and Sasha Pietkiewicz, Ana, John, Adam and Jeffrey Ulchak.
A funeral mass was held at Saint Ann's Church in Wollaston, Mass., on Saturday, Jan. 22.
Katherine C. Emery
FRYEBURG, Maine - Katherine C. Emery, 92, died Monday Jan. 24, 2000 at the Fryeburg Health Care Center, following a period of failing health.
She was born in Guilford, Maine, the only child of Dr. William Cowie and Clara Rand Cowie. She was educated in the local schools and a graduate of Gorham Normal School, now part of the University of Southern Maine.
As a young woman she taught in the Lincoln and North Guilford schools. Even after marriage to Arno Emery, she continued to substitute in the area schools. She was a homemaker who loved to sew and knit for her children and grandchildren.
She was a past member of Meriam Chapter O.E.S., North Guilford Women's Extension, and the Queens in Guilford. She enjoyed her weekly lunch and card games with her friends.
She was predeceased by her husband and daughter, Anne E. Davee, both in 1974. She survived by a son, Stephen G. Emery; his wife Herberta of Copper Canyon, Texas; one daughter, Lois E. Lloyd and husband Grover of Fryeburg, Maine; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
There will be no service, and burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Guilford, Maine, in the spring.
Arrangements are with Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.
Mark Wiggin Jr.
Mark Wiggin, Jr. 73, of Allard Hill Road, Madison passed away at his home January 21, 2000. He was born on April 25, 1926 in Conway and was the son of Mark and Amber Wiggin.
He was a mason by trade. He was an accomplished landscape artist and had a great love for the outdoors and nature.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy and two daughters, Linda Hoban of Paducah, KY, and Elaine Chase of Madison, four grandchildren, Valerie Scanlan of Manchester, David S. Chase of Madison, Matthew and Mark Hoban of Paducah, KY, three sisters, Ruth Hackett, Marion David, Frances Morrill, four brothers, Arthur Wiggin, Ralph Wiggin, Perley Wiggin, Neal Wiggin and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no visiting hours and no funeral at his request.
Eldesta A. "Desi" Sanborn
Eldesta A. "Desi" Sanborn, 82, of North Conway, died January 22, 2000 at the Merriman House in North Conway following a long illness. Born in North Conway, the daughter of Samuel and Etta (Willey) Allan, she had been a lifelong resident of the Mount Washington Valley.
Mrs. Sanborn graduated from Kennett High School, Class of 1934.
New England Telephone Company had employed her in 1935 for one year and she worked at Fred W. Mears Heel Company in Conway from 1943 to 1957. She founded Desi Trailer Park in Conway in the late 1950s and alng with her late husband, Robert C. Sanborn, started the Beach Campground in Conway in the early 1960s.
The family includes a daughter, Beverly M. Sullivan of Cabin John, MD; three grandchilden, Sean D. Sullivan of Washington, DC, Matthew J. Sullivan of Rockville, MD and Hannah K. Sullivan of Cabin John, MD; a sister, Gwen A. Keith of Raymod and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 am at the Glen Community Baptist Church with the Rev. William R. Stockhaus, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the North Conway Cemetery later in the spring.
Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 7 to 9 pm at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway.
Josephine H. (Schmitt) Krim
CHATHAM, Mass. - Josephine H. (Schmitt) Krim, a long time Chatham, Mass., resident, died Saturday morning, January 15, in Lady Lake, Fla. She was 92.
Born in Bad Neustadt, Bavaria, Germany, Mrs. Krim immigrated to Boston in 1923. She married in 1931 and had made her home in Roslindale, West Roxbury and Westwood, prior to settling in Chatham in 1966.
Krim was an early member of the Chatham Cape Cod Hospital Association and had volunteered at the hospital for many years. An avid gardener, she was a member of the Chatham Garden Club. She was also a Charter Member of the German American Club of Cape Cod.
She most enjoyed her role as a homemaker and doting wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband, William A. Krim, her daughter Joanne M. Dray of Yarmouthport, Mass., her son William R. Krim of Conway and Tavares, Fla., five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial mass was celebrated at Holy Redeemer Church, Highland Avenue, Chatham, Mass., Tuesday, January 25, at 11 a.m. Burial in Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline, Mass., was private.
