Clayton N. "Jack" Heath Jr.
MELBOURNE, Fla. - Clayton N. "Jack" Heath Jr., died Dec. 7, 1999, while en route to Pig Pine Key in Florida.
Born in Troy, N.Y. in 1924, he was raised in Portsmouth. He graduated from Portsmouth High School in New Hampshire. In 1951, he earned a bachelor's degree in forestry from the University of New Hampshire at Durham. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Air Force. He retired as a major in the reserve after 22 years of service.
Mr. Heath worked for the State of New Hampshire Forestry and Recreation Commission in 1953 as a junior forester. In 1984, he retired as chief of forest and land management He was also a well known surveyor in New Hampshire. A resident of Epsom since 1954, he was active in local affairs including the Conservation Commission; past president of Epsom PTO; and school board for two terms. He was a member of the Society of the Protection of New Hampshire Forests; a 5O-year member of St. John's Masonic Lodge 1, Portsmouth; a 32nd-degree Freemason; and a member of Bektash Shrine Temple, Concord. After retiring in 1984, he and his wife traveled throughout the United States, Alaska and Canada.
Family members include his wife of 51 years, Ruth (Harmon) Heath; a daughter, Sarah L. Heath of Epsom; a son, Jeffery J. Heath; four grandchildren; his stepmother, Mildred Heath of East Conway; his stepfather, Winston Smith of Portsmouth; two stepbrothers, Richard Owens of Eliot, Maine, and Donald Francis of Greenville, N.C.; three stepsisters, Beverly Walker of Tavares, Fla., Dolores Dow of Standish, Maine, and Judith McGinty of Conway.
A memorial service will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Westbrook, Maine, at a later date.

David C. Baker
"If you are reading this, I must be dead," began David C. Baker's own obituary three days before his death. In equally typical David style he drew his last breath on Christmas Eve. He died in his home as he most adamantly wished.
David was born in the Salvation Army Hospital, in New York City, October 21, 1915. He was a fine artist, poet and daily humorist. He studied at the Massachusetts School of Art, working summers at the Appalachian Mountain Club camp on Lake Winnipesaukee where he met his future wife Mary Jane (Jerry). Drawn to the White Mountains, he and his wife moved to Jackson in 1946. Here David established his art gallery in 1951, and flourished as a painter. He invented a new water color technique called Vitreous Flux. Since his early 20s he and his work have been featured in numerous art reviews and he has won many awards. David was also an avid jazz enthusiast, a UFO-phile, a shcussboomer in the 70-plus ski club and he loved chopping wood even in the last days of his life.
He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II as a Quarter Master 1st Class of a mine sweeper off the coast of Maine and of a command ship in the Pacific Theater.
David was the son of Herman and Chloe Baker. His twin sister, Katherine Crescimanno, predeceased him, as well as two sons, David Jr., age 18 and Steve Karner, age three. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Baker, son Peter Rue Baker of Comex, Vancouver Island, Canada; daughter Nancy, his dog Brianna; four grandsons; two nieces; a nephew and five grandnieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in January. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Salvation Army.
Mark R. Bittner
FREEDOM - Mark R. Bittner, 48, of Freedom, died suddenly on Monday, Dec 20, 1999.
Born in Washington, D.C. on February 3, 1951, the son of Robert J. and Dorothy (Dewhirst) Bittner, he attended school in Upper Saddle River, N.J. and earned his B.S. degree at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y. majoring in business administration.
He was vice president of Indian Head Bank in Nashua and in more recent years, worked for Kondrat Construction of Conway.
After marrying Linda R. Williams on Sept. 20, 1987, the lived in Hollis for three years and then moved to Freedom.
Bittner had served as a selectman of the town of Freedom, a member of the Freedom Zoning Board and on the Freedom Library Building Committee.
Mark is survived by his wife of 12 years, Linda R. Williams, who was raised in Freedom; their son, six year old Robert R. Bittner; and a brother, Bob M. Bittner of Rowley, Mass.
A celebration of Bittner's life will take place on Thursday, Dec. 23, at the First Christian Church in Freedom Village at 1 p.m.

Peter E. Kelly
JACKSON - Peter E. Kelly, 58, of Jackson, died Tuesday at his home following a brief illness. Born in Fryeburg, Maine, the son of Maurice and Doris (Seavey) Kelly, he lived most of his life in Jackson.
Mr. Kelly worked for George W. Moore and Waltham Precision Company, both in Waltham, Mass., as a machine operator, for several years.
He had been a woodsman, owned and operated a snowplowing business and did property maintenance, in Jackson for 30 years.
Peter has been on the Jackson Board of Selectmen for over 20 years and was a member of the Jackson Planning Board.
The family includes his wife, Joanna G. Kelly of Jackson; two daughters, Kimberly A. Perley of Glen and Shannon M. Suprenard of Bartlett; two sons, Timothy L. Kelly and John B. Kelly, both of Jackson; 9 grandchildren; his mother, Doris J. Gates of Jackson; a sister, Jane Musselman of Superior, Wyo.; three brothers, Philip C. Kelly of North Conway, Paul D. Kelly of Deering and Roger Perry of Franksville, Wis.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
His brother, Louis Perry, predeceased him in 1992.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Mountains Church in North Conway. There will be no visiting hours. Leroy Irving Smith
LOVELL, Maine - Leroy Irving Smith, 91, of Slab City Road died Sunday, Dec.19, 1999 at his home.
He was born in Buckfield, Maine, Dec. 4, 1908 the son of Irving and Ina Record Smith and was educated in Buckfield Schools. Mr. Smith started his work career as a Saco River log driver. Ten years ago, the University of Maine interviewed Mr. Smith and wrote a book about what it was like to be a log driver.
He worked for Brown Lumber Co., and then worked 40 years for Diamond National Lumber Co. He also was a surveyor and a Maine guide. He was a life member of the Western Maine Firemen's Association and the Lovell Fire Department and a member of the Maine Trail Breakers. He had lived in Lovell for the past 56 years.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Pauline Kendell Smith of Lovell, two daughters Beverly Bassett ol Lovell, Caroline Knight of Oxford, two sisters, Bernice Mclnnis of Stow and Eldora Charles of North Fryeburg; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Number 4 Cemetery in Lovell with the Rev. Donald Ashworth officiating.

James Lee Gilbert
FRIENDSHIP, Maine - James Lee Gilbert, 20, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, in Friendship.
He was born Nov. 12, 1979, in Milford Mass., the son of James Alfred and Vera Campbell Gilbert. He attended Medomak Valley High School, Class of 1999, where he received the highest award as Student of the Year from the Mid-Coast School of Technology. He was noted for his excellence in attendance, attention to detail, cooperative spirit and quiet but serious demeanor. He received a second award for Student of the Month from the Marine Technology School from his academic instructors.
After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy completing basic training in Great Lake, Ill. He completed machinist mates school and was going to be assigned to the U.S.S. Cleveland in San Diego, Calif.
He is predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Sandra Noonan. He is survived by his mother, Vera Gilbert of Friendship, Maine; father, James Gilbert of North Conway; a brother, Jason Gilbert of Friendship, Maine; sisters Ashley Gilbert and Angela Gilbert, both of North Attleboro, Mass.; paternal grandfather, Leon, and his wife, Edith Gilbert of Uxbridge, Mass.; paternal grandmother, Norma Jean Gilbert of Providence, R.I.; maternal step-grandfather, Harold Noonan of Auburn, Mass.; maternal grandfather, David E., and his wife, Toni Campbell, of Friendship, Maine; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visiting hours will be private. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Advent Christian Church in Friendship. Pastor Michael Poli will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Funeral Home.
Walter F. Dame
BARTLETT - Walter F. Dame, 85, of Bartlett, died Dec. 17, 1999, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway following a long illness.
Born in Lakeport, the son of Harry and Carrie (Puffenburger) Dame, he lived in Leominster, Mass., for 36 years before moving to Bartlett in 1979.
Mr. Dame worked for the Civil Conservation Corps and at Walter Chandler's farm in Bartlett in the 1930s, and in the early 1940s he worked for Ossipee Oil Company. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and a member of Francis P. Murphy Post 5386 VFW in Bartlett.
He owned and operated the North Leominster (Mass.) Garage from 1947 to 1967, and he then worked for Branch Motor Express, Gerard Transportation and Crowley Construction in Leominster as a mechanic before retiring in 1979.
He had been a member of Wilder Lodge AF&AM in Leominster and the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. He had also been an active member of the North Leominster Rod & Gun Club.
The family includes his wife of 59 years, Bertha I. Dame of Bartlett; a brother, Clayton G. Dame, of Zephyrhill, Fla.; a sister, Virginia Boomhower, of Paradise, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be today, Monday, at 11 a.m. in the Bartlett Union Congregational Church, with the Rev. George Harvey officiating. Burial will be in the Bartlett Village Cemetery.

Gary G. Colbath, Sr.
RAPID CITY, S.D. - Gary G. Colbath Sr. of Rapid City, S.D. and formerly of Conway, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at Rapid City Regional Hospital after a six month battle with cancer.
Colbath was born November of 1944 in North Conway to Yerrick and Margaret (Kenny) Colbath. He graduated from Kennett High School, the University of New Hampshire and the University of South Dakota School of Law. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a medic stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota.
At the time of his death he was a senior partner at Banks, Johnson, Colbath and Kerr, L.L.C., practicing with his son, Gary G. Colbath Jr., and anticipating practicing with his daughter, Angela Colbath, who is currently attending University of South Dakota School of law.
He is survived by his wife, Connie; a son, Gary 'Skeeter' Colbath Jr. and his wife, Michelle and their sons, Mason and Conner, all of Rapid City, S.D.; a daughter, Angie Colbath and her son, Tyler, of Vermillion; his father, Yerrick Colbath of Conway; two brothers, John Colbath and his wife, Lynn, of Conway, and George Colbath of North Carolina; four nephews and three nieces.
A celebration of his life was held Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at the First Congregational Church in Rapid City, S.D. with Rev. Ted Huffman officiating.
A memorial scholarship fund will be established at the University of South Dakota School of Law. In lieu of flowers, donations to the fund may be sent to PO Box 9007, Rapid City, SD, 57709.
Sandra Maurice Philbrick
METHUEN, Mass. - Sandra Maurice Philbrick, 53, of 480 Jackson Street, died Wednesday at Mariner Health Care of Methuen after a long illness. Ms. Philbrick was born in Lawrence, Mass. She moved to Brownfield, Maine in 1986 and was employed at Forest Industries of Fryeburg, Maine. Ms. Philbrick returned to Methuen in April of this year.
She is survived by her son Raymond Adams Philbrick IV, of Hudson and three duaghters Pamela L. Philbrick of Haverhill, Mass., Lori-Ann Philbrick of Lynn, Mass., Tanya-Lee Santana Philbrick of Bridgton, Maine; mother Evelyn, Maurice of Lawrence; brother Gerard Maurice of Londonderry and Richard Maurice of Lawrence, Mass; sisters Clara Bernard of Garden Grove, Calif., Pauline Paolino of N.H., Barbara Cobbett of Raleigh, N.C., Beverly Henry of Porter, Maine and Michael Skinner of Danvers, Mass.
A funeral mass will be offered Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Assumption Virgin Mother Church in Lawrence, Mass.
