Margrett R. Ranco
Margrett R. Ranco, 79, of Albany, died November 9, 1999 at The Memorial Hospital in North Conway, following a sudden illness. She was born in Conway, the daughter of Erick and Myrtle Harriman Nolan, and was a lifelong resident of the Mount Washington Valley.
Mrs. Ranco was a graduate of Kennett High School, and a member of the Kennett Keys.
She worked at the former Frankson's in West Ossipee during World War II, and later worked at John F. Chick and Son in Silver Lake as a bookkeeper. She had also been a bookkeeper at the former General Distributors in Conway and at the former Carroll Reed's in North Conway and Conway.
Mrs. Ranco had been a member of the North Conway Community Choir.
Her family includes her husband of 18 years, Frederick W. Ranco of Albany; two step-daughters, Lorraine and Eva, of Maine; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a foster sister, Mary Leavitt of Albany; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home, North Conway, with the Rev. Pojen Lee officiating. Burial will be in the Conway Village Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Francis W. Kerrigan
Francis W. Kerrigan, 72, of Center Conway, died unexpectedly on November 11, 1999 at The Memorial Hospital in North Conway. He was born in Woburn, Mass., the son of Francis and Grace Tanner Kerrigan, and had been a longtime resident of Woburn before moving to the Conway area in 1980.
Mr. Kerrigan worked for the Reading (Mass.) Tree Department for 20 years and after moving to Conway he was very active with the Conway Scenic Railroad.
His family includes three daughters, Karen Street of Woburn, Mass., Karol Simon of Billerica, Mass., and Kristine Martin of Dracut, Mass.; a son, Mark Kerrigan of Lowell, Mass.; four grandchildren; three brothers, Richard Kerrigan, Peter Kerrigan, and Robert Kerrigan, all of Woburn, Mass.; a sister, Jean McColough of Stratham; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Emma Dow Kerrigan, in 1997.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home, North Conway, with the Rev. William R. Stockhaus, pastor of the Glen Community Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the North Conway Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from noon to 2 p.m. prior to the service.
Willard J. Bushey
Willard J. Bushey Jr., 63, of North Conway, died Friday, November 5, 1999 at The Memorial Hospital in North Conway. He was born in Morrisville, Vt., on June 8, 1936, the son of Willard J. Bushey and Helen Gendron Bushey.
He had worked as a woodsman and operated a firewood business known as Grandpa Bushey's Firewood. He served in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1958. He lived in North Conway, coming from the Norway/South Paris, Maine area.
His family includes his wife, Sharon Britton Bushey, whom he married September 3, 1976; his mother, Helen Tilley of Laconia; three daughters, Sarah J. Bushey, Deborah Bushey, and Rebekah Bushey, all of Conway; seven sons, Seth D., Abraham I., and Timothy A., all of Conway, Jeremy D., and Jeffrey A., both of Ossipee, James D. of Albany, and Joseph F. of Otisfield, Maine; ten grandchildren; three sisters, Louise, Linda and Ramona; and three brothers, Edwin, John and Henry.

Roland A. Houde
Roland A. Houde, 82, of Wakefield, Mass., died Wednesday, November 3, 1999 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Constance "Connie: A. Dugas Houde, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.
He was born and raised in Lynn, Mass., and attended St. Jean the Baptist grade school and Lynn Classical High School.
Mr. Houde was employed by the General Electric Company, where he worked in the stock room. He retired as a machine operator after 45 years of service.
He was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club, Polymnia Choir of Melrose, Most Blessed Sacrament Church Choir, and Most Blessed Sacrament Church Holy Name Society.
His family includes six daughters, Suzanne Chelidona of Eustis, Maine, Louise Lambrukos of Medford, Mass., Lorraine Sayward of Rochester, Jacqueline Phipps of Wakefield, Mass., Denise Sanford of Salem, and Marie Bartlett of Monkton, Vt.; three sons, Richard Houde of Stoneham, Mass., and Ronald Houde of Hampstead; a sister, Rita Bourgeois of Conway; 22 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was brother-in-law to Louise Jodoin of North Conway and Albert and Norman Dugas, both of Conway.

William J. Wickers
William J. Wickers, 69, of Conway, died November 3, 1999 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, following a long illness. He was born in Beverly, Mass., the son of Thomas and Anna Novak Wickers Jr., and lived in Essex, Mass., for 21 years before moving to Conway in 1977. He graduated from Beverly, Mass., High School.
Mr. Wickers was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War and fought in the Chosin Campaign in North Korea.
He was an equipment installer for the New England Telephone Company for 35 years in New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts.
He was a member of the New England and National Chapter of the Chosin Few, and a life member and former chaplain of the D.A.V. He was also a member of the I.B.E.W. and the Telephone Pioneers.
His family includes his wife of 44 years, Patricia J. Wickers of Conway; five daughters, Carolyn V. Fennell of Harwich, Mass., Pamela A. Beck of Conway, Linda J.W. French of Gloucester, Mass., Jeannette L. Wickers of Conway, and Michele M. Wickers of Bartlett; ten grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas J. Wickers III of Trumball, Conn., and Francis A. Wickers of Beverly, Mass.; his mother-in-law, Virginia C. Porter of Conway; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Mountains Church in North Conway. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home, North Conway. Donations in Mr. Wickers' memory may be sent to the New Hampshire Veterans Home, The Highlands, Tilton, NH 03276.
Eleanor U. Duemler
CONWAY - Eleanor U. Duemler, 73, of North Conway, died Dec. 30, 1999, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway after a long illness.
Born in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of Virgil and Lillie (Chagny) Duemler, she lived in Springfield, Mass., for over 20 years before moving to North Conway in 1963.
Yield House in North Conway had employed her as a graphic designer and buyer for nearly 20 years.
The family includes a son, Karl C. Bussiere, of Brownfield, Maine; a granddaughter, Genevieve D. Bussiere, of Conway; a brother, Virgil Duemler, of Center Lovell, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no visiting hours.
The Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway is in charge of arrangements.
Albert Horne
CONWAY - Albert Horne, 69, of North Conway, died Dec. 26, 1999, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway following a protracted illness.
Born in Barrington, the son of Knewly and Lottie Horne, he had been a long-time resident of the Mount Washington Valley.
His warm disposition and quick smile will be missed as much as the twinkle in his eye. The staffs of the Merriman House and Memorial Hospital had come to be an extended family during his medical ordeals, and his presence will be sorely missed by all.
His wife, Ida Lacroix Horne, of North Conway, survives him.
A memorial service will be offered at the Merriman House Chapel on Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. All who were close to him are welcome to attend.

Berenice Parker
FRYEBURG - Berenice Parker, 88, died Jan. 1, 2000, at the Fryeburg Health Care Center.
She was born in Beverly, Mass., on Jan. 23, 1911, the daughter of George and Gertrude Smith Parker. She grew up in Reading, Mass., and graduated from Reading High School. She worked her whole life as a live-in care giver and worked in Dedham, Norwood, Reading and for the past 20 years in Melrose, where she was a member of the First Baptist Church. She came to Fryeburg in July because of ill health. She enjoyed playing cards and going for long rides.
Her sister, Ruth Bronson, died in 1994. She is survived by one niece, Deborah Lancaster, of East Conway; one grand-nephew, Mathew Lancaster; and one grand-niece, Mariah Lancaster.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Wood Funeral Home in Fryeburg, with the Rev. Rick Small officiating.
Donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, 561 Main Street, Melrose, Mass. 02176.
Capt. Edward Ellis Hastings
FRYEBURG - Capt. Edward Ellis Hastings II, 76, of Bethesda, Md., who had retired from a long career in the Navy in 1974, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999.
Born in Fryeburg, Maine, he was the son of Hugh and Martha Hastings and the husband of the late Anna Murch Hastings, his first wife, who died in 1961. They had four children.
Capt. Hastings graduated from Fryeburg Academy and then from the Naval Academy in Annapolis in 12th Company Class in 1943. He obtained a master's degree in international relations from George Washington University and graduated from the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
During his Naval career he served as assistant navigator on the U.S. Essex (CV 9) during the last year of World War II.
After World War II he attended flight training and became a Naval aviator in March 1947. Then he served in several light-attack and fighter squadrons. He commanded VA-35 in 1961 and 1962. He served on the staffs Military-Political Division of CNO; operators officer, commander, Naval Forces, Korea; and assistant chief of staff for personnel, commander Naval Air Forces, Pacific.
He graduated from the Armed Forces Staff College, National War College and Industrial College of the Armed Forces, where he served as faculty director of the international relations course for four years.
His decorations include Joint Service Commendation Medal; Presidential Unit Citation; Order of Military Merit; Chungmu (gold star) Command at Sea Insigne from the Republic of Korea; and campaign medals from World War II.
After retiring from the Navy in 1974, he worked as director of administration for the non-profit Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf before retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church in Bethesda and a four-degree Knight, Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Dorothy Ann Hastings, of Bethesda; four children, Edward Hastings III, of Jacksonville, Fla., Elizabeth Pickett, of Swansboro, N.C., William Hastings, of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Martha Hastings, of Windham, NH; three step-daughters, Lynne and Maureen Jackson and Barbara Cuddington; and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by six brothers and sisters, Helen Stearns, of Lovell, Maine, David R. Hastings II, of Fryeburg, Maine, Hugh W. Hastings II, of Fryeburg, Jane H. Folsum, of Alfred, Maine. Mary H. Dumas, of Alfred, and Peter G. Hastings, of Fryeburg.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Dec. 30, 1999, at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Church of Bethesda. Burial with full military honors will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Arlington National Cemetery.
Kevin Michael Cunningham
LEBANON - Kevin Michael Cunningham, 40, of Chocorua, died December 28 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
He was born in Brooklyn, New York, August 18, 1959. The son of John and Arlene Cunningham, and was raised and educated in Bethpage, New York.
He was an avid motorcyclist, "1%", and loved to hunt and fish.
He became a machinist apprentice in 1978 and was employed as a master machinist for 20 years, working for the past six years at Tee Enterprises in Conway.
He moved to Maine in 1988 with his family.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his former wife, Nancy Cunningham of Bridgton, Maine; two daughters, Jessica and Samantha, also of Bridgton, Maine; three brothers, Steven Timothy and Michael, all of New York; three sisters, Donna O'Shea of New York, Patricia Calabro of New York and Kelley Glass of California; his maternal grandmother, Marie McCoy of Bethpage, New York.
Funeral service and burial will be in New York.
Carrie L. Melrose
FRYEBURG - Carrie L. Melrose, 72, of Portland St. died Thursday December 30, 1999 at the Maine Medical Center following a long illness. She was born in Stow, the daughter of Earl and Ada Smith Harriman. She graduated from Fryeburg Academy Class of 1946. She had worked at the old Fryeburg Corn Shop and had been a receptionist for Dr. Boothby and worked many years as a teller for Casco Bank. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and the Bradley Memorial Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband of 42 years Richard E. Melrose of Fryeburg, one daughter Sherryl Blomerth of Lovell, one son, Roger McFarland of Fryeburg Harbor, one brother William Harriman of Fryeburg and two grandsons she was predeceased by a son Joseph McFarland and two brothers Gerald and Malcolm Harriman.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Bradley Memorial Methodist Church in Fryeburg Harbor with the Rev. Richard Male officiating. Donations may be made in memory of Carrie to the Fryeburg Rescue, P.O. Box 177, Fryeburg, Maine, 04037, or to the Bradley Memorial Methodist Church, c/o Patricia Wakes, RR 1 Box 121, Fryeburg, Maine.

Catherine Louise McGarity
MADISON - Catherine Louise McGarity, 18, daughter of Donald and Ann McGarity of Silver Lake, died on Dec. 28,1999, at her home.
She was born on Oct. 23, 1981, in New York City, and at the age of 2 moved with her parents to Tamworth, where they lived for several years. During that time Catherine developed a love of animals, especially horses. When she was 7 years old her parents moved to Silver Lake to run the Lakeside General Store. She attended Madison Elementary School and upon graduation from the sixth grade received the Good Citizen's award. For a year she attended Kennett Junior High, then Tamworth Junior High, and Kennett High School when her parents returned to Tamworth for three years. Catherine again received a Good Citizenship award at eighth-grade graduation from K.A. Brett.
In high school, Catherine was on the high honor roll, and participated in basketball and Key Club. She was inducted into the National Honor Society elected treasurer of the key club, and received the Principal's Award and the French Award in the 11th grade. Catherine became an avid horsewoman under the tutelage of Barbara Iorfino of Tamworth, and taught CCD at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Ossipee where she was a communicant. Catherine also helped her parents run the store and deliver pizzas. She had intended to become a pediatric psychotherapist. Catherine made several trips to England during her lifetime and made many friends there.
Catherine had just started a job as a skiing instructor at King Pine Ski Area.
In addition to her parents she leaves family members: sister Kim-Marie and her husband Larry Hammond of New York, and their daughter Kara; Allison and Claude Turner of Seacliffe N.Y., and their daughters Chelsea and Brooke; brother Brian McGarity of Brooklyn, N.Y. and his girlfriend Merrill Hornstein; Jen McGarity Bryant of Alstead and former husband Richard Bryant of Tamworth and their son Killian and daughter Sinead; and sister Lenora McGarity of Silver Lake. Her relatives in England include her grandmother, Vera Allison of Colne, Lancashire, her great aunt Alice Langfield also of Colne, and her cousin Keith Langfield of Nelson, Lancashire. Close friends include Tony and Barbara Iorfino of Tamworth, and Marie Judd of Silver Lake.
Calling hours will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee. A mass of Christian burial will be at St. Joseph's Church, Center Ossipee, at 10 a.m. The burial will be held at the Chocorua Cemetery.
