Donald B. Halpin
Donald B. Halpin, 72, of West Ossipee, died Monday, October 25, 1999 at Huggins Hospital, Wolfeboro, following a long illness. He was born in Everett, Mass., the son of the late Joseph P. and Viola Dean Halpin.
Mr. Halpin graduated from Saugus High School, Saugus, Mass., in 1945. After serving in the Merchant Marines, he was employed by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and was a member of IBEW Local 104 for 33 years, prior to retiring in 1981.
He was an avid sportsman, serving as president of the Lynn Snowchasers Ski Club for two terms (1959-60; 1960-61), and was the treasurer of the Volunteer Yacht Club in Lynn, Mass., for two terms. He was also an avid musician, golfer, and fisherman.
His family includes his wife of 41 years, Jessie Bears Halpin of West Ossipee; four children, Judith A. Cox Rich of Moultonboro, Thomas E. Halpin of Virginia Beach, Va., Jane E. Patterson of Bristol, and Sheila S. Colby of Bristol; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two sisters, Jean Waddle of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Dorothy Bradford of Peabody, Mass.; a brother, Robert Halpin of Wells, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph D. Halpin, and two sisters, Myra H. Congdon and Carol Halpin Durgin.
There will be a memorial service at the Moultonville Methodist Church, Center Ossipee, on Sat., Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. Donations in his memory may be made to VNA/Hospice of Southern Carroll County, P.O. Johanna Harriet Bockhorn
Johanna Harriet Bockhorn, 66, died October 22, 1999 at her daughter's home after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was born March 25, 1933 in Atlantic Highlands, N.J., the daughter of Dorothy Pearle (Stringham) and Harry Bockhorn.
She attended QBI in White Plains, N.Y., and attended and raised money for the United Methodist Church in Mamaroneck, N.Y. She lived in Tamworth from 1952 until 1967, when she moved to Mamaroneck to start her own business, which she ran until 1989.
In 1993 she returned to the Mount Washington Valley for her retirement.
Her family includes a daughter, Sondra-Tiffany Brendt Luttrell of Freedom and Parsonsfield, Maine; two sisters, Dorothy Reis of Rhode Island and Marge Driscoll of New Jersey; two brothers, Martin J. Bockhorn of Philadelphia, Pa., and Harry Bockhorn of Staten Island, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews, and many friends.
She was predeceased by a son, Andrew A. Basile, in 1977, and by a daughter, Nina Basile, in 1958.
There will be no visiting hours. A service will be held Wednesday, October 17 at 1 p.m. in The Memorial Hospital Chapel at the Merriman House in North Conway. Private services for family members will be held in New York on November 27.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Eric H. Styffe Sr.
Eric H. Styffe Sr., 81, of Portland, Maine died Thursday at a Portland hospital following a brief illness.
He was born in Worcester, Mass., a son of Harold and Ethel Carlson Styffe. Mr. Styffe attended school in Worcester and was a 1936 graduate of Commerce High School. While in school, Mr. Styffe was a talented athlete. He excelled in golf and basketball. At the age of 17 he hit a hole-in-one on a par four hole at the Green Hill Golf Course in Worcester. He was a finalist in the Massachusetts Schoolboy Golf Championship which was held at Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland, Mass., in 1936. Following high school, Mr. Styffe attended and graduated from Becker Business College in Worcester.
In 1942, he married Clemence Foster in Boston, Mass.
During World War II, Mr. Styffe served in the army in the European theater of operation. He was involved in several campaigns and battles.
In 1949, Mr. Styffe moved to Portland, Maine. In the early 1950s he became the owner and operator of Ricky's Tavern on Portland Street. He retired in1975. Mr. Styffe was a life member of the South Portland VFW Post 832, a member of the Westbrook American Legion Post, and a former member of the Riverside Golf Course.
His family includes his wife, of Portland; three daughters, Colette Lankau of Sudbury, Mass., Marcia Styffe Mancini of Gray, Maine, and Nancy Manoogian of North Conway; a son, Eric H. Styffe Jr. of North Conway; a sister, Irene McClure of Naples, Fla.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Conroy-Tully Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, Maine. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Clarence G. Walker
Clarence G. Walker, 89, of Fryeburg died Thursday, October 21, 1999 at the Fryeburg Health Care Center. He was born in Gorham, Maine, the son of Albert and Ellen Gilchrist Walker.
He graduated from Gorham High School and also from Gorham Normal School. For 38 years Mr. Walker taught industrial arts at Fryeburg Academy. He was a member of the Fryeburg Fish and Game Association, and the Retired Maine Teachers Association.
His family includes a son, Richard C. Walker of Milan; and two granddaughters, Andrea Walker Brown and Kathleen Walker Hanson.
He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Rita Smith Walker, in 1994.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 27 at the Wood Funeral Home in Fryeburg, with the Rev. Violet Eastman officiating. Judith A. Bell
Judith A. Bell, 56, of Center Conway died October 19, 1999 at her home.
She was born September 14, 1943, the daughter of Hugh C. and Geraldine Cushing Bell. She grew up in Wolfeboro and moved to Laconia in 1964. She moved to Conway in 1982. She had been a client of Center of Hope for 18 years.
Predeceased by her father in 1963, she leaves her mother, of Wolfeboro; a sister, Nancy A. Bell of Wolfeboro; her loving and devoted caregivers, whom she resided with: Eleanor Stearns and Rebeccah Stephens, both of Conway; and many friends in the Conway area.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Center Conway United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wesley Palmer officiating. Burial will be private.

Philip S. Rader
Philip S. Rader, 47, of Intervale, died October 18, 1999 at The Memorial Hospital in North Conway following a sudden illness. He was born in Columbia, S.C., the son of John and Helen Heald Rader, and lived in the seacoast area of New Hampshire for 16 years before moving to Intervale in 1997.
Mr. Rader graduated from the University of South Carolina Law School in 1981. He was a partner in the law firm of Michael, Jones and Wensley in Rochester until 1997, when he joined the firm of Cooper, Deans and Cargill in North Conway, where he was able to enjoy the mountains he loved, and the practice of law.
He was a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, the Pequawket Foundation and the Mount Washington Valley Economic Council. He was past president of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce and was named Outstanding Community Leader by the Rochester Jaycees. Phil was also past president of the Rochester Chapter of the American Red Cross from 1986-1988.
In 1993 and 1999 he was the recipient of the N.H. Bar Association's Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service for Strafford County.
He was an avid skier and hiker, having hiked all of the 4,000 footers in New Hampshire. Mr. Rader was a proud member of the Mad Dog Ski Team.
Phil was generous with his time, donating many hours to charitable organizations, most recently to the Bethlehem Hebrew Congregation. He was a loving husband and father, and a great friend to many.
His family includes his wife, Ellen L. Gordon of Intervale; a son, Isaac C. Rader of Intervale; a brother, John F. Rader of Austin, Texas; a sister, Betsy Rader of Columbia, S.C.; and his mother, Helen G. Rader of Columbia, S.C. He was the son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gordon of Manchester.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Bethlehem Hebrew Congregation on Strawberry Hill in Bethlehem, with Cantor Amy Mitz officiating. A reception will follow at Maplewood.

Elizabeth T. 'Betsy' Heistand
Elizabeth T. "Betsy" Heistand, 81, of Jackson, died Sunday, October 17, 1999 at the Basset Hospital in Cobleskill, N.Y. after a sudden illness while on a trip with her husband. She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of Rev. Benjamin and Mary Hooff Rudderow, and grew up in Philadelphia. She resided in Alexandria, Va., for ten years, Colebrook for six years, North Conway for five years, and in Springfield, Ill., for 20 years prior to moving to Jackson in 1992.
A graduate of Agnes Irwin High School in Philadelphia, Mrs. Heistand was one of the first women trained by the U.S. Weather Bureau as a meteorologist, during World War II. Later she worked as a meteorologist for the U.S. Weather Bureau at National Airport in Washington, D.C. for 12 years.
A member of the Audubon Society, she did volunteer work with the N.H. Audubon Society as a counter of peregrine falcons and eagles in the Crawford Notch area and Androscoggin region.
Mrs. Heistand was very active in the Episcopal Church and was a hospice volunteer. She was an expert fly fisherman, canoist, and an active dog obedience trainer. She was also an avid hiker and gardener.
Her family includes her husband of 45 years, Rev. Hobart H. Heistand of Jackson; and three cousins, Randolph Rudderow of Philadelphia, Pa., Thomas Rudderow and Peter Rudderow, both of Florida.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the family home, a half mile past Eagle Mountain House (on the left) on Carter Notch Road, Jackson. There will be no visiting hours.

George N. Papamechail
George N. Papamechail, 88, of Danvers, Mass., died Saturday, October 16, 1999. He was born in Salem, Mass., on May 11, 1911, the son of the late Nilos and Panagiato Kleros Papamechail, and was raised and educated in Danvers, Mass., and was a lifelong resident. He was a 1929 graduate of Holten High School.
Mr. Papamechail was a graduate of the apprentice program at the Boston Naval Shipyard, and was employed there for over 25 years. He had also been employed by Babco in Danvers, Mass., as a machinist.
He had been a longtime member of the Riverside Squares and Lynn Gun Club. An avid golfer, he was a member of St. Michael's Golf League, Peabody, Mass. He was also a former Town Meeting member in Danvers.
His family includes his wife, Josephine Salvo Papamechail of Danvers, Mass.; his sons, George N. Jr. of Peabody, Mass., Edward of Danvers; a stepson, A. Richard Miller of Las Vegas, Nev.; his daughters, Mary Cloutman of North Conway, Grace Nadeau of Manchester, Conn., Agnes Jalbert of Peabody, Mass., and Roslyn Gorman Nemphos of York, Maine; his brothers, Eletherious "Pappy" Papamechail of Beverly, Mass. and Constantine "Pappy" Papamechail of Peabody, Mass.; his sisters, Vaselia Varutsos of Peabody, Mass., and Anna Federico of Wakefield, Mass.; 24 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held Wednesday at noon at St. Vasilios Church, Peabody, Mass. Donations in Mr. Papamechail's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1 Kendal Square, Building 200, Cambridge, MA 02139.

Thelma B. Davis
Thelma B. Davis, 51, of North Conway, died Oct. 16, 1999, at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born in North Conway, the daughter of C. Henry and Elizabeth (Reed) Davis, she was a lifelong resident of North Conway.
She graduated from Kennett High School, class of 1966, and received an associate degree from Burdette College in Boston.
She had been a bookkeeper at the former Jesse E. Lyman Shell Station in North Conway for five years, and had worked at the former Top Furniture in North Conway and Northeast Glass Company in North Conway. Later she worked at the Cliffside Restaurant in North Conway for 12 years, and for the past 10 years she was employed at the Peking Restaurant, also in North Conway.
The family includes her twin brother, Richard R. Davis, of North Conway; and two cousins, Abbott W. Thompson, of Philadelphia, Pa., and Phillip S. Morse, of Kennebunkport, Maine.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the First Church of Christ Congregational, with the Rev. William Gardner, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place in the Davis-Dinsmore Cemetery on the West Side Road in North Conway. There will be no visiting hours.
