William Albert Howard

William Albert "Bill" Howard, 66, of Conway, died Sunday, July 18, 1999 due to a sudden illness. He was a lifelong resident of Conway.

Mr. Howard had been employed as a cook/clerk at various local businesses, and was a United States Army veteran.

He leaves behind two sons, Mark W. Howard of Vero Beach, Fla. and Roger A. Howard of Silver Lake; four sisters, Sandra Billmen, Patricia McKowen, and Judith Rowell of East Conway, and Faye Roberts of of Nahant, Mass.; a grandson, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Bill was predeceased by his mother, Barbara "Gram" Howard, and by his father, Harry W. Howard.

There will be a celebration of Bill's life on Wednesday, July 21 at 11 a.m. at the First Assembly of God Church on Drift Road, Fryeburg. Everyone who knew and loved Bill is welcome to attend.
There will be no visiting hours. Arrangements are being made by Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.
Donations in Mr. Howard's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mary Ward Hutchins

Mary Ward Hutchins, 96, of West Fryeburg died Saturday, July 10, 1999 at the Fryeburg Health Care Center. She was a lifelong resident of Fryeburg, born the daughter of Byron and Barbara Ward Hutchins, and was educated in local schools. She worked as an operator for the old Lovell United Telephone Co., she was a waitress, and worked as a housekeeper for Memorial Hospital in North Conway. She attended the Fryeburg New Church. The family includes several nieces and nephews, including Violet Thurston and Thomas Hutchins, both of Fryeburg.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 1:30 at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Fryeburg with the Rev. Violet Eastman officiating.

Donations may be made to Fryeburg New Church Elevator Fund, 4 Oxford St., Fryeburg, ME 04037.

Arrangements are with Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.

Gordon C. Johnson

MADISON - Gordon C. Johnson, 72, of Mooney Hill Road in Madison, died July 23, 1999, at the VA hospital in Manchester.

He was born in Eaton, the son of Sewell and Gladys Douglas Johnson, and he was educated in Eaton schools. He was a World War II veteran. Most of his life he lived in Conway, moving to Madison 12 years ago. He was a member of the American Legion Post 46. He was a self-employed logger his whole life.

His wife, Evelyn Jackson Johnson, died in 1991.

He is survived by three sons, Gordon C. Johnson Jr., Kevin D. Johnson and Keith L. Johnson, all of Conway; seven daughters, Veronica Tewksbury, of Boscawen, Rosalie LaFalce, of Venice, Fla., Ann Allen, of Stuart, Fla., Katherine Richardson, of Northfield, Ardia Johnson, of Conway, Alice Pennell, of Tamworth, and Bonnie Sullivan, of Conway; several brothers and sisters; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

At his request, there will be no service. Burial will be in Conway Village Cemetery. Arrangements are by Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.

Martin F. Kearns

Martin F. "Marty" Kearns, 77, of North Conway, died on July 28, 1999 at The Memorial Hospital following a short illness. He was born in Lynn, Mass., and was the son of the late Martin and Margaret Kearns of Galway, Ireland.

Mr. Kearns attended St. Mary's Grammar and Classical High School in Lynn, Mass., and Franklin Technical Institute and Northeastern University in Boston. He worked at the General Electric Companies in Lynn, Mass., for 41 years; 30 years at West Lynn Instrument Department, starting as a transformer coil winder. He then became Manager of Methods and Work Measurement, prior to transfer to the Aircraft Engine Group at the River Works, where he was Adminstrator of Works Measurement.

During World War II, Mr. Kearns was in the 8th Air Force 91st Bomb GP, stationed in England. He served as a crew member of the B-17 Flying Fortress, completing 35 missions over Germany.

He was a member of the choir and an usher at Our Lady of the Mountains Roman Catholic Church in North Conway; the Grey Eagles former Aerial Combat Members; the Eastern Slope BPOG Elks; and the North Conway Country Club. Mr. Kearns was also a 44-year member of the Knights of Columbus 70 Valla Dolio Council in Lynn, Mass., where he served as financial secretary and chancellor. His hobbies were oil painting and golf.

His family includes his wife of 12 years, Bernadette Tector Kearns of North Conway; a son, Dennis Kearns of Acton, Ga.; a daughter, Patricia Kearns of Boca Raton, Fla.; a niece, Karen Kearns of Gallup, N.M; and four grandchildren.

Mr. Kearns was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Bette Elanderi Kearns, and by two brothers and his sister.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Mountains Church in North Conway. A graveside service will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery, Lynn, Mass., at 11 a.m. Monday. Visiting hours will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway. Donations in Mr. Kearns' memory, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Our Lady of the Mountains New Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 189, North Conway, NH 03860.

Valeria A. Beleskas Luoma

Valeria A. Beleskas Luoma, 91, a former longtime resident of Boston, and a summer resident of Snowville, died Sunday, July 18, 1999 at the Emerson Hospital in Concord, Mass.

She was born in South Boston, the daughter of the late Joseph and Barbara Kibas Belaskas. Mrs. Luoma was a graduate of Burdette College and was formerly employed as a bookkeeper. An Acton, Mass., resident for the past seven months, she lived in Boston most of her life and was a member of St. Peter's Parish in Dorchester, Mass. Since 1946 she especially enjoyed spending summers at her vacation home in Snowville.

Her family includes a brother, Felix Beleskas of Deltona Beach, Fla.; a sister, Blanche Dolan of Acton; three nieces, Virginia Harris and Barbara Mallard, both of Acton, and Maryann Bufalini of San Diego, Calif.; two nephews, John Beleskas of Deltona Beach, Fla., and Stephen Dolan of Florida; 11 grandnieces and nephews; and three great-grandnieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Eino Luoma, and by a brother, Stanley Beleskas.

Donations in Mrs. Luoma's memory may be made to either Emerson Hospice Program, P.O. Box 9120, Concord, MA 01742 or to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Douglas W. Meader

Douglas W. Meader, 60, of West Ossipee, died July 7, 1999 at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, after a period of failing health. He was born March 9, 1939 in Melrose, Mass., the son of the late Frank H. and Annie O. Blanchard Meader, and had lived in Ossipee for most of his life. He was a graduate of Kennett High School in Conway.

He was co-founder of the Pizza Barn in West Ossipee, along with his brother, Donald Meader, more than 25 years ago. Douglas also worked as a paralegal and office manager for Attorney James Patten in Wolfeboro.

After high school, Douglas joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served for several years. He was very active in the town government of Ossipee, serving as selectman for many years. He was a member of the West Ossipee Fire Department and served as a commissioner of the West Ossipee Fire Precinct as well as many other civic organizations. Earlier, he was employed as a patrolman for the Ossipee Police Department, and also as a deputy sheriff with the Carroll County Sheriff's Department. He was a member of the Moultonboro Lions Club and the Ossipee Valley Lodge F&AM 74, and was a member of Bektash Temple, Concord. Douglas also served on the board of directors of the North Conway Bank and had a special interest in Camp Robin Hood.

His family includes his wife, Nancy Robertson Meader, of the Clipper Home in North Conway; a son, Scott Meader of Cincinatti, Ohio; two daughters, Tammy Meader of Tuscon, Ariz., and Tracey Margeson of North Hampton; a granddaughter, Heather Margeson of North Hampton; two brothers, Donald Meader of West Ossipee and Philip Meader of Gonic; several nieces and nephews; and by a very special friend, Dottie Hill of Moultonboro.

Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lord Funeral Home, Center Ossipee. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, Center Ossipee.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Bank of New Hampshire, West Ossipee branch, to the Douglas W. Meader, Camp Robin Hood Scholarship Fund.

Mary Nesmith

Mary Nesmith, 99, of Fair Haven, Vt., and formerly of Benson, Vt., died Saturday, June 17, 1999 at the Sager Nursing Home in Fair Haven.

She was born on April 18, 1900 in Lowell, Mass., the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Louise B. Nesmith. She was an alumni of the class of 1920, graduating from Bradford College in Haverhill, Mass. She resided in Lowell, Mass. and South Conway for many years. She moved to Benson, Vt., in the early 1950s and resided there until April, 1990, when she became a resident of Sager Nursing Home in Fair Haven, Vt.

She was predeceased by her two sisters, Louise Nesmith and Katherine Westbrook; a brother, Joseph E. Nesmith; and by a nephew, Joseph Nesmith.

A memorial service will be conducted at a later date in South Conway. Arrangements are by the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven, Vt.

A graveside service will be held for Rudolph "Rudy" A. Simard on Saturday, July 31 at 1 p.m. at the Conway Village Cemetery on Washington Street.

Nora M. Smith

Nora M. Smith, 89, of Conway, died Sunday night, July 4, 1999 at the Norway Rehabilitation Center after a short illness. She was the last of six children born in East Stoneham, to Herbert and Nettie Durgin McAlister.

She received her education in Lovell schools and graduated from Fryeburg Academy, class of 1929. She was a former member of the Lovell United Church of Christ, a Past Matron of Pythagorean Chapter OES.

Her family includes two daughters, Elaine Pike of Gorham, Maine, and Joan Grover of East Stoneham; five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two husbands, Holmes Gould and Roger O. Smith.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home, 12 Warren St. Fryeburg, Maine, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. David Larson officiating. Burial will be in Conway Village Cemetery.

Charles S. Stevenson

Charles S. Stevenson, 62, of East Conway, died on Tuesday, July 6, 1999, in an accident in Sanbornton. He was born January 23, 1937 in Baltimore, Md., to Charles and Alice D. Stevenson. He was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, class of 1955; Princeton University, A.B., class of 1959; post-graduate at University of Edinburgh, Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, M.D., class of 1969, and McGill University, MSC, in 1972.

He served for four years (1959-1963) in the U.S. Navy, including time aboard the U.S.S. Hawkins as an intelligence officer.

On August 3, 1966, Charlie married Diana Edwards (daughter of Gordon and Sidney Edwards) in Cults, Scotland. After living in New York City, Montreal, Canada, and Aberdeen, Scotland, they settled in New Hampshire and he began working at Memorial Hospital in North Conway. From 1975 to 1986 he was a General Surgeon and Emergency Department (ED) physician. In 1986 he took his fellowship from Emergency Medicine and worked full time as an ED physician until his retirement in 1996. In his retirement, he continued his interest in reading, travel, computers, and music.

He leaves behind his wife, Diana S. Stevenson of East Conway; four children, Ian, Peter, and Katy Stevenson, all of East Conway, and Alice Stevenson of New York City; his father, Charles S. Stevenson Sr., MD, of Laconia; three sisters, Frances Stevenson of Washington, D.C., Edith Stevenson-Schnabel of Boulder, Colo., and Anne Stevenson of Belmont; a brother-in-law, Bobby Schnabel of Boulder, Colo.; a niece, Heidi Schnabel, and a nephew, Corey Schnabel, both of Boulder, Colo.; and two aunts, Barbara Stevens of Clinton, N.Y. and Mary Dixon of Westminster, Md.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 14 at 2 p.m. at Christ Church Episcopal, Pine Street, North Conway, with the Rev. Jack Haney, rector, officiating.
Donations may be made to the Children's Health Center, Memorial Hospital, P.O. Box 5001, North Conway, NH 03860-5001.
Arrangements are by the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway.

Philip W. Stone

TAMWORTH - Philip W. "Stony" Stone, 82, of Old Route 25 Whittier, died July 2, 1999, at his home after a sudden illness.

He was born Nov. 16, 1916, in Bridgton, Maine, the son of the late Lothrop and Ethel Stone, and he had lived in Tamworth for most of his life. He had worked as a logger for Frank Whipple of Tamworth before becoming a mechanic and working at Whipple's Garage in Tamworth, later known as Tamworth Toyota, owned by Paul Fredrickson. He also later worked for James Elliott at Elliott's Garage in Tamworth, and he was a custodian at the Kenneth A. Brett School in Tamworth for many years.

He served as a private in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a long-time caretaker of the Tamworth and Chocorua cemeteries. He loved sports and particularly enjoyed the local ball games.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Irene (Leso) Stone, of Tamworth; three sons, Bruce Stone, of Needham, Mass., and Philip Stone II and David Stone, both of North Conway; three daughters, June Crowell, of Wonalancet, Cynthia Stone, of Melbourne, Fla., and Vicki Forsythe, of Conway; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces.

Calling hours will be today, Monday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Andrews in the Valley Church, Old Route 25, Tamworth, with Rev. Peg Custer officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Tamworth.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Tamworth Community Nurses Association, Tamworth, NH 03886.

Anni Wilhelm

Anni Wilhelm, 74, of Fryeburg, died Thursday, July 22, 1999 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. She was born in Kostopol, Poland, the daughter of Joseph and Martha Berndt Krejczyk, she was educated in Poland and attended college in Vienna, Austria. She was fluent in six languages.

In 1954 she came to the United States and settled in New Jersey. In 1960 she became a U.S. citizen, and moved to Marlboro, Mass., and in 1976 moved to North Conway, and shortly after came to Fryeburg.

She was a member of the Mount Washington Valley OES and the Pythagorean Chapter OES.

Her family includes her husband of 56 years, Martin H. Wilhelm of Fryeburg; two sons, Victor Wilhelm of Mass., and Dagobert Wilhelm of Arizona; and a daughter, Yvonne Sargent of New Hampshire.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 28 at Wood Funeral Home, Fryeburg, with the Rev. Rick Small officiating. The Pythagorean Chapter OES will also have a ritualistic service.
