Edgar N. Coderre

Edgar N. Coderre, 65, of Tamworth, died July 19, 1999 at the Catholic Medical Center Hospital in Manchester.

He was born December 14, 1933 in North Grovenorsdale, Conn., the son of the late Roland and Noella Chaput Coderre. He had lived in North Grovenorsdale most of his life, moving to Tamworth in 1983.

Mr. Coderre worked as a truck driver for many years, retiring from Currier Trucking, and was most recently he was a bus driver for Mountain View Nursing Home in Ossipee.

During the Korean War, he served his country in the United States Army. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Center Ossipee, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Chocorua.

His family includes his wife, Frances Litwinkowich Coderre of Tamworth; a son, Edgar Coderre of Thompson, Conn.; six daughters, Suzon Warner of Pomfret, Conn., Robin Hubert of Brooklyn, Conn., Ann Hebert of Effingham, Cathy Hanson of Effingham, Sue Lionetta of Tamworth, Debra Winsor of Moultonboro; two sisters, Pierette Bernier of Webster, Mass., and Jean Pratt of Putnam; 11 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, July 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Rt. 16, West Ossipee. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Chocorua. Arrangements are by the Baker-Gagne Funeral Home of West Ossipee and Wolfeboreo.

John D. Crouchley III

John D. "Sandy" Crouchley III, 54, of Bristol, R.I., died July 22, 1999, at his home.

He was the husband of Barbara (Buxton) Van Sciver Crouchley. He was born in Providence, R.I., the son of Dorothy (Barber) MacDuff, of East Providence, and the late John D. Crouchley Jr. He was the step-son of Robert A. MacDuff, of East Providence. He had lived in Bristol since 1985. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1966 and received his master's degree in hotel management and computer technology from the University of Massachusetts.

He was a member of the New York Yacht Club, the Dunes Club in Narragansett and the Herresoff Museum in Bristol. He had been a member of the Barrington Yacht Club, where he was a member of the crew winning the Sears Cup. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited. He was also an avid skier and former ski racer and instructor. He participated in the annual Rhode Island Ski Race at Attitash Mountain in the Bartlett, North Conway area, where he maintained a home for many years.

He is survived by his wife, mother and step-father; a daughter, Autumn H. Crouchley, of Barrington; a son, John D. "JD" Crouchley IV, of Bristol; a step-son, Pieter Van Sciver, of Providence; two step-daughters, Hope Van Sciver, of Providence, and Sara Metzger, of Ashville, NC; and one step-granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at First Congregational Church of Bristol. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the John D. Crouchley Scholarship Fund of Providence Country Day School, 660 Waterman Ave., East Providence, RI 02914. Arrangements are by Smith-Mason Funeral Home in Riverside, R.I.

Michael D. Cyrs

Michael D. Cyrs, 47, of Littleton, died at his residence on July 16, 1999, after the onset of a sudden illness.

He was born in Manchester on June 25, 1952. He was a 1970 graduate of Littleton High School.

Michael's was a specialty building contractor for over 20 years and was the owner and operator of his own company, Michael D. Cyrs Builder, primarily in the North Conway and Lincoln areas.

He was a devoted husband and father, hard working, and he loved NASCAR racing.

His family includes his wife, Cheryl A. Wright Cyrs of Littleton; two stepsons, Jeremy Bolduc and Nathan Wright, both of Littleton; two grandchildren; two brothers, Randy Mercer and Rick Mercer, both of Lumberton, N.C.; his parents, Howard and Patricia Mercer; and his grandmother, Julia Cyrs of Whitefield.

A funeral service will be held at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union Street, Littleton today at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Tom Golden officiating. Burial and commital rites will be in the Glenwood Cemetery in Littleton.

Palmer Davenport

Palmer "Pete" Davenport, 68, of West Dennis, Mass., died Saturday, July 17, 1999 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Mass., following an illness.

He was born in Atlanta, Ga., and moved to Cape Cod in the early 1950s. He attended Colgate University, where he graduated with honors. In 1955, he completed a master's degree from Harvard Business School, with distinction.

Mr. Davenport then became assistant to the president at the J.B. Williams Company in New York City. In 1956 he co-founded the Davenport Companies with his father, John K. Davenport, which includes the ownership of the Red Jacket Mountain View and Fox Ridge Resorts hotels in North Conway.

He was active on the Cape as a former trustee to Cape Cod Hospital; former chair of the Dennis Golf Commission, former member of the Dennis Conservation Commission; the former director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Cape Cod and the Islands; and the former director and executive committee member of the Edward Bangs Kelley and Elza Kelley Foundation, Inc.

Mr. Davenport was also a trustee of the John K. and Thirza F. Davenport Foundation for the Arts, and the director and executive committee member of Cape Cod Bank and Trust Company. He was the director of the Oyster Harbors Club, the Hyannisport Club, and Nickerson Society.

Mr. Davenport was on the Advisory Committee of Ocean Forest Club in Georgia. He was a strong believer in children, and thus established a Big Brothers/Big Sisters Trust.

He was a licensed pilot, an active boater, an avid golfer and a recreational skier. His family visited the Mount Washington Valley often, spending time at their vacation home on the Red Jacket property.

His family includes his wife, Jane Dansand Davenport; two sons, John C. Davenport of Rumford, R.I. and DeWitt A. Davenport of South Yarmouth, Mass.; three grandchildren and several nieces.

Memorial donations may be made to the John K. and Thirza F. Davenport Foundation for the Arts, 20 North Main Street, South Yarmouth, MA 02664 or to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Cape Cod and the Islands, 1934 Falmouth Rd., Centerville, MA 02632.

Bradley L. DeRemer

BROWNFIELD - Bradley L. DeRemer, 43, of Shepherd River Road in Brownfield, died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway after a battle with cancer.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., the son of Lawrence and Betty Freeman DeRemer. He grew up in Bridgewater, NJ, and graduated from Bridgewater High School. He spent four years in the Marine Corps and then lived in Easton, Pa., for many years. He moved to Maine eight years ago and for the past six years worked for White Mountain Oil as an oil and propane burner technician.

Besides his mother, of Bridgewater, NJ, he is survived by his wife, Lorraine Lettiere DeRemer, of Brownfield; two sons, Christopher, of Newport News, Va., and Joseph, of Brownfield; two daughters, Jennifer DeRemer, of Robbinsville, NJ, and Theresa DeRemer, of Brownfield; one brother, Gary DeRemer, of Neshanic Station, NJ; two sisters, Becky Cavage, of Whitehouse, NJ, and Deborah Ricard, of Flemington, NJ.

Visiting hours will be today, Monday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home in North Conway. A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church on Route 5 in Fryeburg, with the Rev. Robert Vaillancourt as the celebrant. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Fryeburg.

Thomas W. Doughty

Thomas W. Doughty, 62,of Fryeburg, died Thursday, July 29, 1999 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. He was born in Portland, the son of Warren and Alice MacVane Doughty, and grew up in South Portland. He graduated from South Portland, Maine High School. He spent four years in the air force, then graduated from the University of Maine in Portland, and the University of Maine in Orono. He received his Masters in Education from the University of Southern Maine.

He taught school in Fryeburg for 33 years, and for the last 12 years he was a school principal, within Pequawket Valley School District 72, retiring in 1995.

He was a member of Christ Church Episcopal in North Conway; Pythagorean Lodge of Masons, Fryeburg; Kora Temple Shrine; past president of the Bridgton Shrine Club; former member of Kiwanis; and active with the Fryeburg Fair ticket department.

His family includes his mother, of South Portland; his wife, Carmen Butterfield Doughty of Fryeburg; a son, Jason W. Doughty of Fitchburg, Mass.; a daughter, Jennifer Christiansen of Naples, Maine; a brother, Charles E. Doughty of Long Island, Maine; and a granddaughter, Catherine Christiansen.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Christ Church Episcopal, Pine St., North Conway, with the Rev. Jack Haney officiating. Pythagorean Lodge will conduct the committal service at Pine Grove Cemetery in Fryeburg.

Elias E. Downs

Elias E. Downs, 76, of Bartlett, died on Tuesday, July 27, 1999 at Frisbee Memorial Hospital after a short battle with lung cancer. He had lived in Bartlett village at the Cameron House for the past 17 years.

Elias was born in Moultonville, Center Ossipee, on December 20, 1923. He grew up and lived in Tamworth most of his life, where he made many friends. He went to Tamworth High School and after high school he served in the Army Air Force in World War II. Elias worked as a lumberjack and also worked for New England Box Co. He was actively involved in the Elders Program at the Center of Hope. His baby blue eyes and gentleness will be missed by all.

His family includes a sister, Edna Wheeler of Tamworth; an aunt, Leona Grant of Belmont; and his extended family at the Cameron House in Bartlett.

Visitors may call at 1 p.m. August 2 at Lord Funeral Home in Ossipee. At 2 p.m. there will be a graveside service with pastor George Harvey at Riverside Cemetery on Old Rt. 25 in Tamworth. After, there will be a gathering at the Union Hall, Rt. 25 South Tamworth, to celebrate Elias' life.

Kathryn J. Eastman

Kathryn J. Eastman, 57, of Chatham, died Thursday morning, July 8, 1999 at her home after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Sanford, Maine, the daughter of the late William R. and Anne Shaw Jordan Antonucci.

She grew up in Fryeburg and graduated from Fryeburg Academy, class of 1960, and from Golden School of Beauty Culture in 1961. She was also the State of Maine Dairy Princess in 1960, chosen to represent the Maine Dairy Industry.

She was a charter member of the Chatham Historical Society and served as treasurer for a time. She started the "Christmas Bells" and belong to the Merry Makers Christmas Club, and she also formed a cribbage club. She served as supervisor of the checklist for the town of Chatham for a time.

She lived in Conway from 1962-66 and worked for the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. In 1967 she moved back to Fryeburg and worked both at the A&P and Northland Shoe Co. In 1972 she moved to Crawford Notch, and moved back to Chatham in 1982.

Her family includes her husband of 27 years, Everett "Herb" Eastman; a son, Jason S. Eastman, both of Chatham; a brother, W. Robert Jordan; a sister, Martha Manoriti, both of Fryeburg; and three step-brothers.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Center Chatham Cemetery, with Pastor Kenneth Hinkley officiating.
Donations may be made in memory of Kay, to the Fryeburg Rescue, P.O. Box 177, Fryeburg, ME, 04037; or to the Chatham Historical Society.
Arrangements are by the Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.

David W. Eldridge

David W. Eldridge, 66, of Ossipee, died Monday, July 19, 1999 at Sunrise Care of Wolfeboro after a long illness. He was a native and longtime resident of Ossipee, the son of the late Wilbur and Myrtle Templeton Eldridge.

David was formerly employed as a mill worker at Yield House in West Ossipee several years ago. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and was a member of the Rodney White VFW Post8270.

His family includes his longtime companion, Marie Jenness of West Ossipee; a son, David W. Eldridge of West Ossipee; two stepsons, Harvey and Wayne Jenness, both of Center Ossipee; five grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Whiting of Water Village and Anna Myers of Meredith.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Eugene, Ahiel, and John Eldridge.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lord Funeral Home, Center Ossipee. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Chickville Cemetery, Center Ossipee.

H. Wendell Folkins

H. Wendell Folkins, 93, of Tamworth, passed away on Saturday, July 3, 1999 at the SunRise facility in Wolfeboro after a period of poor health. He was a resident of Tamworth for his entire life, with the exception of his early years spent in North Quincy, Mass., the city of his birth.

He was an ardent fisherman and made fly-tying his career. Perfection was his aim in this regard. Indeed, sets of his flies became collector's items. He made many trips to fishing resorts and fully enjoyed these exciting outings.

Wendell was always interested in community affairs, and eager to express his views on politics and controversial matters by voice or letters to the paper. He enjoyed conversations with friends on many subjects. These occasions are well-remembered by many acquaintances.

Surviving are his wife, Olive, of Tamworth; and their daughter, Betsy, of Lamoni, Iowa.

A service will be held at the Lord Funeral Home, Wolfeboro, on Wednesday, July 14 at 1 p.m.
