Hugena 'Jean' Dunbar Seidenstuecker
Hugena "Jean" Dunbar Seidenstuecker, 82, died on May 6, 1999 in Orangeberg, South Carolina. She and her husband were en route to New Hampshire from a winter stay in Florida.
She was born and raised in Massachusetts. She graduated from Natick High School, Simmons College, and received her Master's Degree from Plymouth College.
She came to Conway in 1938 to teach business courses at Kennett High School. In 1940 she married Karl Seidenstuecker. During the war, they lived in South Dakota for a time, and here their daughter Lynn was born. After the war, the owned Pine Hill Cabins and Restaurant for 20 years. Upon its sale in 1965, she returned to Kennett High School and taught until her retirement.
She leaves her husband, Karl; a daughter, Lynn Gall of Augusta, Maine; two grandsons, Jason and Ryan; a sister, Irene Schneider of Natick, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a graveside funeral on Sunday, May 30 at the Conway Village Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kennett Alumni Scholarship Fund, 176 Main St., Conway, NH 03818.
Arrangements are by the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway.
Irene Wilson West
Irene Wilson West, 90, of Southington, Conn. died Saturday, May 8, 1999. She was born in Unionville, Conn. on Nov. 12, 1908, the daughter of the late Glenroy P. and Grace Allen Wilson, she resided in Simsbury, Conn. for 31 years.
Irene was a member of the Hester Chapter, O.E.S. in Simsbury, Conn. for 64 years.
Her family includes her children, Donald H. and Donna West of Conway; Gerald A. West of Southington, Conn., and Elaine B. West of Barkhamsted, Conn.; three grandchildren, David L. West, Christine R. West and Susan West; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Silas H. West.

Wanda J. Roberts
Wanda J. Roberts, 44, of Dixfield, Maine, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999 at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. She was a lifelong resident of Dixfield.
She was born in Portland, Maine on January 12, 1955, the daughter of Walter and June Dailey Hodge Jr. She was a graduate of Rumford High School with the class of 1974, and later received her C.N.A. certification. She worked as a C.N.A. at the former Cozy Inn Nursing Home and Dixfield Health Care Center for many years.
She was a member of the Dixfield Congregational Church and was active in the Youth Groups and Mission Committees, Christian Education Committee which included Vocation Bible School, and she was a member of the Diaconate of the church. She was a past member of the Dixfield Fire Department Auxiliary, Swasey-Torrey Post 100 American Legion Auxiliary.
Her family includes her husband, Philip C. Roberts of Dixfield, whom she married on June 29, 1974 in West Peru, Maine. He is formerly of the Mount Washington Valley; a daughter, Sara Jane Roberts of Dixfield; three sisters, Ruth Ann Lebrecque of Peru, Maine, Paula-Jean Greer of Norridgewock, Maine, and Rose-Marie Bowen of Tampa, Florida; two brothers, David Hodge of Bangor, Maine and Walter Hodge of Bethlehem, N.H.
She was predeceased by a son, Adam Quincy Roberts, and by a brother, Seldon Frank Roberts.
Friends are invited to call at Meader and Son Funeral Home, Rumford, Maine on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in the Demeritt Cemetery, West Peru, Maine. Those who desire may contribute to the Roberts Family Fund c/o Phillip Roberts, 12 Park Ave, Dixfield, Maine 04224 in her memory.
Richard A. Madden
Richard A. Madden, 65, of Greenland, died on Sunday, May 9, 1999 at his home after a period of failing health.
He was born in Lynn, Mass. on August 24, 1933, the son of J. Edmund and Clemance Callahan Madden. He served in the U.S. Army and was a graduate of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1957.
He was employed for many years at the former Toner Pharmacy in Portsmouth. He was director of the pharmacy at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester before he and his wife Ann Toner Madden opened the Village Pharmacy in North Conway. While he lived in North Conway, he was chair of the Board of Directors of the Memorial Hospital, Mount Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce, charter member of the North Conway Lions Club, and the Eastern Slope Inn. After leaving North Conway he worked as a pharmacist at Frisbee Memorial Hospital in Rochester and at Martin's Point Pharmacy. He was a member of the N.H. Society of Health System Pharmacists and a former member of the Jaycees and the Warwick Club.
He was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
In addition to his wife of 41 years, his family includes a daughter, Teresa Madden Metcalfe of Rochester, N.Y.; four sons, Kevin Madden of Kearsarge, Keith Madden of Dover, Peter Madden of Manchester and Michael Madden of Portsmouth; six grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Summer St., Portmouth. Memorial donations may be made to the N.H. Wilfred E. Peterson
Wilfred E. Peterson, 81, of Stow, Maine, died Thursday, May 6, 1999 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. He was born in Scarborough, Maine, the son of Peter and Mette Larsen Peterson, and was educated in the Portland area.
He was a World War II navy veteran, serving on the battle cruiser USS Guam. For 16 years he ws a foreman and coremaker at the foundry of the Portland Co. He moved to Windham, Maine, where he lived for many years, and worked as a self-employed carpenter and building contractor.
For many years, he and his family would spend summers and weekends at their home in Stow. He moved there full time 22 years ago. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and collecting antiques.
His family includes his wife of 59 years, Velma Purington Peterson; a son, Melvin E. Peterson; a daughter, Linda Libby, all of Stow; a brother, Norman Peterson of Portland, Maine; two sisters, Valva Rokowski of Scarborough, Maine and Astrid Sawyer of Naples, Maine; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A private family graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Hillcrest Cemetery in Stow, Maine.

James R. Hodgins Jr.
James R. Hodgins Jr., 71, died December 31, 1998, in Jacksonville, Fla. Mr. Hodgins was born June 10, 1927 in Rockport, Mass. to James and Lillian Hodgins. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in China during World War II and was an honor guard on the Freedom Train.
Mr. Hodgins graduated from the University of Florida in 1957 with a B.A. in Communications and Journalism and traveled with the Men's Glee Club. He was selected for the University of Florida Hall of Fame and elected to the Alpha Epsilon Rho honorary radio fraternity. He worked for WJXT-12 in Jacksonville where he was Bosun Jim on the Popeye's Pals Show and was station manager for Channel 17 ABC.
Mr. Hodgins was part of the first live remote TV shots of the Mercury and Gemini space launches in Cape Canaveral. From 1962-1964 he was in Pago Pago, American Samoa, where he was involved with the set up of the Educational Television Island Network. He was a communications manager with the U.S. Postal Service in Jacksonville, Fla. and retired in 1992, as communications manager in Albany, N.Y.
Mr. Hodgins was a 32 degree Mason and a member of the Ashler Masonic Lodge in Rockport, Mass. and the Scottish Rite in Jacksonville, Fla. He was a member and lector of Christ Episcopal Church in Ballston Spa, N.Y.
Mr. Hodgins was predeceased by his son, George F. Hodgins.
His family includes his wife of six years, Jean Ivey Hodgins of Ballston Spa, N.Y; three children, Joseph Hodgins, Jacqueline Phillips, and James R Hodgins IV, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; two aunts, Marion Straka of Jacksonville Beach, Fla. and Marguerite Kolbe of King City, Ore.; and eight grandchildren.
Memoral Services were held on January 3 in Jacksonville, Fla. and at Christ Episcopal Church in Ballston Spa, N.Y. on January 23 with Rev. Derik Roy officiating.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 20 at noon at the Christ Episcopal Church, 10 Pine St., North Conway, with Rev. Jack Haney officiating, followed by Masonic graveside service at the Gilman Cemetery in Madison. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Christ Episcopal Church Building Fund, 10 West High St, Ballston Spa, NY 12020.
Mr. Hodgins and his family have been summer residents on Pine Knoll Rd in Albany since 1955.
Following the services, a reception will be held at Bill's Place Restaurant on Route 16, Madison.
Lawrence A. Garland
Lawrence A. Garland, 81, of North Conway, died on May 3, 1999 at The Memorial Hospital in North Conway, following a long illness. He was born in Bartlett, and was the son of Arthur and Helen Sanborn Garland.
Mr. Garland lived in North Conway for over 50 years. He was a logger for William G. Duprey in the 1940s, a truck driver for Pyrofax Gas Company in the 1950s, and the maintenance man at New England Inn for several years, prior to retiring in 1980. Mr. Garland was also an avid hunter and fisherman.
His family includes his wife of 60 years, Anna Lein Garland of North Conway; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother, Raymond J. Garland, in 1993, and by a sister, Mildred Garland, in 1938.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday at the Intervale Cemetery in Intervale, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. William Stockhaus officiating. There will be no visiting hours.

James F. McLeod
James F. McLeod, 53, of Barre, Vt. and formerly of Fryeburg, died in Erwin, Tenn. on April 30, 1999 while hiking the Appalachian Trail.
He was born August 2, 1945 in Barre, Vt., the son of James H. and Iris Chase McLeod. He graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre. He attended Greenfield College in Greenfield, Mass.; Northeastern University in Boston, Mass.; and graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, in forestry.
He moved back to Barre, Vt. in 1995, from Fryeburg, where he had lived from 1983 to 1995. He was a member of the Center Conway United Methodist Church.
Mr. McLeod had been employed by Allpoints as a long distance truck driver for the past three years. He had formerly been employed as a forester for Great Northern Paper Company in Millinocket, Maine for many years, and was a forester in the Fryeburg area for many years.
His family includes a son, James Matthew McLeod of Portland, Maine; two sisters, Elaine M. Wagner and Janet E. Santin, both of Barre, Vt.; several nieces and nephews; an aunt, uncle and several cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife, Judith Ann Kelley McLeod, who died in 1995.
There will be no calling hours. Services will be held at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia on Saturday, May 8 at 2 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Wesley Palmer, pastor of the Center Conway United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Laconia.

Emma Mae Brown
Emma Mae Brown, 75, of Tamworth, died April 24, 1999 at The Memorial Hospital, North Conway, after a long illness. She was a lifelong resident of the Silver Lake and Tamworth areas.
She was born October 22, 1923 in Tamworth, the daughter of the late William E. and Alice Ross Moore.
An outgoing, loving and giving person, her activities included volunteer work at the former Carroll County Nursing Home, now known as Mountain View Nursing Home, in Ossipee. For the past several years, she volunteered in the information booth of the Greater Ossipee Chamber of Commerce. Emma was a member of the Madison Church, as well as past president and longtime member of the church Philathea Ladies Auxiliary and the Chocorua Ladies Aid Society. She especially enjoyed her role as Choir Mother to the 80-plus person choir at the Tamworth Associated Church from the mid to late 1960s.
Her family includes a daughter, Debra J. Brown of Alexandria, Va.; a son, Donald S. Brown of Akinson; and a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Jan Brown of Chocorua; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and a larger extended family.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Herbert F. and Donald R. Moore, both of whom died during World War II; and by her husband, Carlos J. "Jerry" Brown.
