FRYEBURG - John Ewart Calley Jr., 63, of Portland Street in Fryeburg, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, during heart surgery at Maine Medical Center.
He was born in Somerville, Mass., on Jan. 25, 1938, the son of John Ewart Calley Sr. and Mildred Moses Calley. He attended schools in Cambridge, Arlington, and graduated from Belmont High School, class of 1956. He was active in DeMoulay and Boy Scouting. He graduated from Franklin Technical Institute in Boston and from the Cambridge School of Radio Broadcasting. In 1957, he worked for a short time for the local radio station, WBNC, in Conway.
In 1964, he moved from Arlington to Fryeburg, and in 1967 he opened his store in Center Conway called John's TV, which now includes Valley Rentals. He ran a business booth for over 25 years at the Fryeburg Fair, and in 1997 opened the Green Mountain Coffee Booth. He was past president of Fryeburg Kiwanis; a director of the local DARE program; active in the New Hampshire Federation of Independent Businesses; and a member of the New Hampshire Leadership Council.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Judith Fournier Calley, of Fryeburg; one son, John Edwin Calley, of Concord; one daughter, Janet and husband Brian Collins, of Fryeburg; three grandchildren, Brandon S. Calley of Concord, and Amanda and Aric Kiesman of Fryeburg; and his extended family, Robin French and Tommy Bailey, both of Concord.
Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 12 Warren Street, Fryeburg, where a funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Burial will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford, Mass.

FRYEBURG - Timothy Alan Potwin, 27, of Howe Street in Fryeburg, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, as a result of a snowmobile accident in Brownfield.
He was born in Bridgton and grew up in Fryeburg, the son of Alan and Donna Hamilton Potwin. He graduated from Fryeburg Academy, class of 1993. For the past three years, he worked for Bailey Manufacturing as a loader driver.
He was predeceased by a brother, Robert, in 1988. He is survived by his parents, one brother, Shawn Potwin, and his maternal grandmother, Marcia Smith, all of Fryeburg; and his uncle and aunt, Gordon and Rose Hamilton of Winchendon, Mass.
Visiting hours will be today (Monday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home, 12 Warren Street, Fryeburg. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Riverside Cemetery, North Fryeburg.

LOVELL - Alice M. Lorton, 93, of Eastman Hill Road in Lovell, Maine, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at the Fryeburg Health Care Center.
She was born in New Castle, Ind., the daughter of Walter and Eva Dinkins Murray, and graduated form New Castle High School, class of 1925. She moved to Lovell in 1951 from Lawrence, Ind., and for many years she and her husband ran Lorton's Garage in Lovell. She was a member and past treasurer of the Lovell United Church of Christ, and active in the Ladies Church Circle. She was also a member of Pondicherry Chapter Order of The Eastern Star.
She is survived by one son, Robert M. Lorton, of North Reading, Mass.; one daughter, Mary Wilson, of Fryeburg; nine grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 5, at 2 p.m. at the Lovell United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Ronald Ashworth officiating.

Fryeburg - Dolly Blake, 72, of Howe St. died Wednesday March 7, 2001 at the Bridgton Hospital. She was born in Franklin NH June 5, 1928 the daughter of Leon nad Selina LaPage Blake. She has lived in Fryeburg for the past 40 years. She was employed by local wood working companies including J.R. Mainsin Bridgton for 20 years and Forest Industries in hunting, berry picking, hiking and most of all her friends and family. After retirement she continued to do woodworking as a hobby, if she wasn't in her wood shop, you could find her at her secret fishing spot. She was predeceased by her parents and a brother Leonard. She is survived by a sister Barbara Brown of Oxford, two brothers Leon O. Blake Jr. of Oxford, Karl E. Blake of South Portland, her life long friends Priscilla Noel and Mary Chute of Fryeburg, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 3:30 Monday at the Wood Funeral Home, 12 Warren St. Fryeburg. Donations may be made in memory of Dolly to the Fryeburg, Rescue, P.O. Box 177, Fryeburg, ME 04037.
OSSIPEE - Rita (Brousseau) Cardoza, 69, wife of Joseph Cardoza, of Leisure Drive in Center Ossipee, died March 14, 2001, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.
Born Aug. 20, 1931 in Salem, Mass., daughter of the late Leo and Delvina (LeClaire) Brousseau, she has lived in Center Ossipee since 1979, previously living in Danvers, Mass., for many years.
Mrs. Cardoza worked as a CNA at Huggins Hospital and Liberty Pavilion Nursing Home in Danvers, Mass. She also worked at CBS Hytron in Salem, Mass.
She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Center Ossipee where she was a Eucharistic Minister and was involved with the Sunday School Program.
Pre-deceased by a brother Leo Brousseau, she leaves her husband, Joseph Cardoza, of Center Ossipee; two sons, Kenneth Cardoza of Florida, and Keith Cardoza of Plymouth; four daughters, Linda Hyde Zannini and her husband Henry Zannini of Salem, Sandra Iovanne of Peabody, Mass., Donna and her husband Paul Pepper of Danvers, Mass., and Paula Weeks of Peabody, Mass.; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Bonnie Brousseau of Derry; a sister, Ida Lunt of Kennebunk, Maine; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Calling hours were Sunday at Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Route 16, West Ossipee. A Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, March 20, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Center Ossipee.

MADISON - Richard Boyle O'Reilly Hocking of Madison, life-long teacher and philosopher, died peacefully in his home on Sunday, March 11, 2001. He was in his 95th year.
Born in Berkeley, Calif., on Aug. 26, 1906, he was the eldest child and only son of William Ernest Hocking, Harvard philosopher, and Agnes Boyle O'Reilly, founder of the Shady Hill School in Cambridge, Mass. He went to his mother's school with his two sisters, the late Hester Campbell and the late Joan Kracke, and later attended Phillips Academy at Andover, Mass. He earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics and physics from Harvard in 1928 and subsequently decided to make philosophy his work.
In 1932 he received his PhD from Yale, after a year of study in Berlin, Germany. He taught at the University of Minnesota, Williams College, the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), and the University of Chicago, before settling at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., where he was invited by Professor Leroy Loemker to help establish the doctorate program in 1949. He taught there for 21 years, during which time, he recently commented, "Every year my awareness deepened that the history of philosophy is one great conversation."
In 1939, he married Katherine Ewing, director in the Federal Theatre in Chicago, Ill. (1936-39). They began an unfailingly devoted relationship; each was committed to participating in each other's lifework. "Kay and Richard" became a source of delight and vitality for the communities in which they lived.
In 1971, they moved to Madison, to the home that Richard had helped to build. Richard's 30 years of retirement were active ones. He worked to preserve his father's philosophical legacy, while quietly developing his own rich intellect. He managed the family farm West Wind, and worked with Raymond Ward to improve the fields and rebuild stonewalls. He continued his professional involvement in many organizations, such as the Metaphysical Society of America, the Guild of Scholars of the Episcopal Church, Southern Society for the Philosophy of Religion, Ella Lyman Cabot Trust, and the Fund for Systematic Philosophy, of which he was the founder. He also became involved in many local community organizations. For instance, he was devoted to St. Andrews Episcopal Church, the Great Books Discussion Group, the Colloquium, the Madison Conservation Commission, the Madison Historical Society, the Grange, and the Madison Town Meeting.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Katherine Ewing Hocking; his three daughters, Jillian Farwell, Jennifer Wiley, Penelope Hocking (Gartrell); seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A service will be held at
the Madison Church, Route 113, on Monday, March 19, at 1 p.m., followed by a reception at St. Andrew's-in-the-Valley, Old Route 25, Tamworth. The family will be collecting written memories of Richard - photographs and drawings, etc. - from any who care to contribute.

CONWAY - Frances E. DeWitt, 72, of Conway, died March 13, 2001, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, after a brief illness.
Born in Effingham, the daughter of David and Clara (Parker) Brownell, she moved to Conway in 1949.
She graduated from Ossipee Central School, class of 1947.
Mrs. DeWitt had worked in the former Carroll County Hardware in North Conway for several years, and she was the receptionist at White Mountain Oil Company in North Conway for 18 years prior to retiring in 1990.
She was a member of the Conway United Methodist Church, treasurer of Conway United Methodist Women and member of the Conway Historical Society.
The family includes her husband of 52 years, Everett C. DeWitt, of Conway; a daughter, Sandra D. Wilson and her husband, David, of Littleton; three sons, Carl C. DeWitt and his wife, Rebecca, of Conway, Michael E. DeWitt and his wife, Ingrid, of Freedom, and Curtis E. DeWitt, of West Ossipee; four grandchildren, Matthew Wilson, Jennifer Emery, Kristina DeWitt and Heidi DeWitt; a great grandson, Andrew Emery, a brother, Lawrence M. Brownell, and a sister, Agnes L. Thompson, both of Center Ossipee; and several nieces and nephews.
A great granddaughter, Whitney A. Emery, and two brothers, Harold P. Brownell and Chesley Brownell, predeceased her.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Conway United Methodist Church in Conway, with the Rev. Katherine Russo, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Conway Village Cemetery later in the spring. There will be no visiting hours.

Lillian M. Radford Mathis, 88, formerly of Concord MA and Chelmsford, MA and more recently of North Conway, NH, died at Memorial Hospital, N. Conway on Tuesday, March 6, following a friend illness. Born in Cambridge, MA, November 28, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Ernest T. and Inez V. (Morrill) Jillson. A life-long lover of animals, she had shared her home with cats and dogs over the years. She also enjoyed socializing with her many friends and working with crafts. She was the wife of the late Archibald M. Radford, who died in 1968 and the late Gail Mathis, who died in 1993. She leaves her daughter, Barbara Spurr and her husband, Phil of N. Conway; her sister, Leona Fay of Methuen, MA and her grandchildren, Pamela A. Scarlett of Concord, NH and Robert A. Spurr of Chester, NJ. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Robert C. Radford, who died in 1998. Friends are invited to attend services in the MacRae-Tunicliffe Funeral Home, Thoreau and Belknap Streets, Concord, MA on Wednesday, March 14 at 1 PM. The Rev. Robert H. Barber will officiate and interment will follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Visiting hours in the funeral home will be Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Robert T. Mills, 69, of South Conway, died March 9, 2001 at the Springbrook Nursing Home in Westbrook, ME, following a long illness. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, the son of Russell and Golda (Rowe) Mills, he moved to South Conway in 1994. Mr. Mills graduated from Tri-State College in Angola, IN, in 1962 with a degree in chemical engineering. He had been employed for 34 years with E.I. DuPont DeNemours, prior to retiring in 1985 as an executive in marketing. Following retirement, he owned and operated a chemical business for ten years. Mr. Mills enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing and was a talented amateur artist. He was a member of the North Conway Rotary Club. The family includes: his wife, Joann (Chapin) Mills of South Conway; a son, Michael B. Mills of Leawood, KS; a daughter, Gail M. Babick of Cape Elizabeth, ME; four grandchildren; two sisters, Roselyn Wells of Auburn, IN and Rita Smith of Northome, MN and a brother, Rodney Mills of Fort Wayne, IN. A daughter, Cheryl L. Mills, predeceased him in 1985. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1 PM at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway with the Rev. Jack Haney, officiating. Burial will be in the Conway Village Cemetery later in the spring. Visiting hours will be Saturday from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home. Lovell -- Erland L. McAllister, 52, of Lovell died Friday March 9, 2001 at Fryeburg Health Care. He was a life long resident of Lovell the son of Buchard and Ruby Hewey McAllister and was educated in Lovell schools. Erland was disabled his whole life and unable to work, but he did enjoy mowing the lawn and working around the yard. He is survived by his father of Bridgton, two brothers Erwin B. McAllister, Errol L. McAllister, both of Lovell, two nephews, Wesley Hewey of Machiasport, Erwin McAllister Jr. or Brownfield, two nieces Ellen Pellitier of Brewer and Cindy Walker of Brownfield.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at #4 Cemetery in Lovell. Arrangements are with Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.
Leona Helen Makein, 78, of Newnan, Ga., died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Mariner Health Care in Newnan, Ga. She was born in Brockton, Mass., on March 12, 1922. Mrs. Makein was a retired nurse, and is survived by her mother-in-law, Dora Makein; her son, George Lauzon, of Newnan, Ga., and Frank Lauzon, of Madison; grandchildren Patricia Bounds, Catherine Groover, Jason Lauzon, Jimmy Lauzon, Peter Lauzon, and Donna Rooks; and many great-grandchildren. Services will be held today (Monday) at the McKoon Funeral Home Chapel in Newnan, Ga. Mrs. Makein will be laid to rest at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park at 656 Roscoe Road in Newnan, GA.
FRYEBURG - George Morton Redding, 77, of Highland Park in Fryeburg, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway.
He was born in Attleboro, Mass., the son of Edgar and Alice Glidden Redding. He grew up in Raynham, Mass., and graduated from Raynham High School. He was a World War II Army Air Force veteran. He lived in Franklin, Mass., for many years and worked 35 years for General Motors in the paint department. He was past master of Excelsior Lodge of Masons in Franklin and was a member of Pythagorean Lodge in Fryeburg.
His whole life he was an avid stamp collector, and at the time of his death he was president of the White Mountain Stamp Club. He was past secretary of the Highland Park Association, and past president of the Fryeburg Historical Society. In 1985, he designed and built his home in Fryeburg.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Annie Ventham Redding, of Fryeburg; two daughters, Louise Mae Jonston, of Hyannis, Mass., and Judy Redding of Bartlett; two granddaughters, Wendy Farrell and Mary Jane Jonston; and two grandsons, Corey Farrell Jr., and John Farrell.
Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home, 12 Warren Street, Fryeburg. Pythagorean Lodge of Masons will conduct a Masonic Service on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
