James P. Donnelly
James P. Donnelly, 79, of Meredith, died early Thursday morning, January 28, 1999 at Shaughnessy-Kaplan Hospital, Salem, Mass.
He was born in Boston on June 2. 1919, the son of the late Robert E. and Mary B. Cavanaugh Donnelly, he was raised and educated there and was a 1936 graduate of Boston English High School. He received his BBA at Northeastern University and his Masters in Accounting at Bentley.
He was employed for a time at the former CBS Hytron in Danvers, then at several manufacturing firms in the greater Boston area prior to moving to New Hampshire in 1970. He had also worked part time for the State of New Hampshire as an auditor.
Mr. Donnelly served his country from 1938 to 1941 as a merchant seaman and naval reservist and then enlisted in the U.S. Army serving as a sergeant in World War II. He was a teletype operator in the Pacific Theater. Following the war, he again served in the U.S. Navy reserve.
He was a member of V.F.W. Post 1670 in Laconia, and Eastern Slope Lodge 2055 of Elks in Conway.
His family includes two sons, Michael Donnelly of North Andover, Mass and Mark Donnelly of Wenham, Mass; four daughters, Judith Donnelly of California, Joanne Fagan of Danvers, Mass. Maura Gatowski of Michigan, and Mia Donnelly of Newburyport, Mass; two stepchildren, Carol Benoit and Michael Cosine, both of New Hampshire; a brother, Richard Donnelly of Pennsylvania; a sister, Claire O'Meara of North Andover, Mass.; his former wife, Elizabeth Donnelly of Danvers, Mass.; eight grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Leonna LaPlante Donnelly.
A memorial service will be held in the spring. There will be no visiting hours. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm Street, Danvers, Mass. 01923. Arrangements are by C.R. Lyons and Sons, Funeral Directors, Danvers, Mass.
Thomas F. Darville
Thomas F. Darville, 90, of Intervale, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at his home following a period of declining health.
He was born in Norwood, Mass., the son of Arthur and Elizabeth (Kennedy) Darville. He lived in Needham, Mass., before coming to Jackson in 1945. He and his late wife, Ruth E. (Arkerson) Darville, who passed away three months ago, established Thorn Hill Lodge. They ran it successfully for 27 years. Keeping their guests happy was one of the highlights at Thorn Hill. Many returned year after year.
Before coming to Jackson, Mr. Darville worked at the Christian Science Monitor in Boston. He was also active in the arts and crafts of North Conway. He loved pitching horseshoes, snowmobiling and skiing.
At Mr. Darville's request, there will be no services. Burial will be in the Glen Cemetery later in the spring. Donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care Services of Northern Carroll County, P.O. Box 432, North Conway, NH 03860.

Neal R. Oakes
Neal R. Oakes, 91, a retired U.S. Forest Service employee formerly of Conway, died Jan. 29, 1999, at the Gwynedd Center Nursing Home in Lansdale, Pa., following a long illness.
He was born in Conway and was the son of Frank and Annie (Head) Oakes. He was raised in Berlin and Conway, and lived most of his life in the Conway area. He worked as a foreman for Parker Young Lumber Company; a mechanic for C. Parent's Gulf Station in Conway; and for 20 years as a forester for the U.S. Forest Service. He restored the Albany Covered Bridge before retiring in 1971. He was also an active member of the Conway United Methodist Church.
After the death of his wife, Lillian, in 1988, he made his home in Lansdale, Pa., with his daughter, Jane Oakes Anderson.
The family includes his daughters, Nancy Bolan, of Upper Nyack, N.Y., and Jane Anderson, of Landsdale, Pa.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Conway United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Wesley E. Palmer, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Conway Village Cemetery later in the spring. Visiting hours will be tomorrow, Tuesday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway.

LeGrand 'Lee' Cannon, III
LeGrand "Lee" Cannon, III, 73, of Chocorua and Milton, Mass., died Sunday, January 24, 1999 at his home in Chocorua of pancreatic cancer.
He was born September 21, 1925 in New Haven, Conn. the son of Look To The Mountain author LeGrand Cannon, Jr. and Jeannette Peabody Cannon.
He enjoyed many years in Chocorua where his parents and grandmother had second homes.
Mr. Cannon attended Cooperstown Academy in Cooperstown, N.Y.; Goddard College in Plainfield, Vt., and Wentworth Institute in Boston, Mass. He was employed by Cole-Hersee and Terkelsen Molding, from which he retired in 1991. In 1954 he married M. Marie Cassidy and moved to Milton, Mass.
He enjoyed aviation, motorcycling, old cars, skiing and square dancing, where he met his wife. Since retiring he has taken part in activities at the Milton Council on Aging; Milton Senior Citizens; NARFE Chapter 430 in Quincy, Mass.; AARP Chapter 4097 in Quincy; Mount Washington Valley Chapter 720; Elderhostel; and the Chocorua Lake Association.
His family includes his wife, M. Marie Cassidy Cannon of Chocorua; his children, LeGrand Cannon IV of South Portland, Maine and Laura-Marie Pond Cannon of Milton and Chocorua; three grandchildren; two siblings, Jeannette Cannon Glaws of North Sandwich and Margaret Peabody Cannon of Chocorua and Winthrop Peabody Cannon of Old Lyme, Conn. and Chocorua; and a large and loving extended family with close ties to Chocorua.
Calling hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, January 27 at the Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Rt. 16 West Ossipee. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 30 at St. Andrew's-In-The-Valley Church, Old Rt. 25 in Tamworth; A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 12 at St. Elizabeth's Church in Milton, Mass.

Russell George Holden
Russell George Holden, 74, died on Sunday, January 24, 1999 at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway, following a sudden illness. He was born in Stoneham, Mass. and was the son of the late George H. and Ruby Harper Holden.
Mr. Holden lived in North Conway for many years. He was a member of the Stoneham, Mass. Fire Department for 34 1/2 years retiring as a Lieutenant, and a past DAD Advisor for the Stoneham (Mass.) Demolay. He was a member of the King Cyrus Lodge AF&AM in Stoneham, Mass. the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Boston, Mass. the York Bodies of Melrose, Mass., the Aleppo Temple of Wilmington, Mass., the American Legion Post 46 in Conway, and a life member of the Francis P. Murphy VFW Post 5386 in Bartlett.
In World War II, he served in England with the 8th Army Division stationed at Duxford Airbase.
His family includes his sister, Ruth Spencer of Denville, N.J.; his sister-in-law Marynoyes Holden of Melrose, Mass.; and eight nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Robert B. Holden.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Bartlett Union Congregational Church with the Rev. George Harvey officiating. There will be no visiting hours.

Elizabeth Tattray Sherwood
Elizabeth Rattray Sherwood, 87, of Silver Lake, died January 23, 1999 at The Memorial Hospital in North Conway after a brief illness. She was born in North Walpole, and had lived in Naples, Florida during the winters and moved more permanently to Silver Lake in 1969.
Her family includes two sons, John F. Sherwood of Silver Lake and William A. Sherwood of Naples, Florida; seven grandchildren, Barbara Woodward of Tamworth, Paul Sherwood, Joyce Boewe and Mark Sherwood, all of Silver Lake, Marie Redding of Orlando, Florida, Linda LeClare of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Shawn Sherwood of Naples Florida; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, John W. Sherwood; and by a grandson, John F. Sherwood, Jr.
There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Church, Conway, with burial in the St. Charles Cemetery, Bellows Falls, Vermont, on Wednesday at noon.
Arrangements are by Lord Funeral Home, Center Ossipee.
Cecilia R. Gregg
Cecilia R. Gregg, 78, of Milford, died on January 14, 1999 at the Laurel Center in Bedford after a long period of failing health. She was born in Lowell, Mass. on December 1, 1920, and was the daughter of Albert J. Gregg, Sr. and Nora E. Judge Gregg.
Miss Gregg moved to Conway at an early age and graduated with honors from Kennett High School, Class of 1939, before earning a B.Ed at and graduating with honors from Plymouth State College. She studied for her Master's Degree at Riviere College in Nashua. As a student at Plymouth, she received several prizes for her poetry and came to the attention of the late professor Eric P. Kelly of Dartmouth College, a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board and Newberry Award Winner for his work, The Trumpeter of Krakow. Professor Kelly was instrumental in Miss Gregg's later having her poetry published. Miss Gregg taught in several school districts throughout New Hampshire, including Claremont, Amherst, Conway, Merrick, Hudson and Nashua.
She was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Milford, and a member of the Third Order of St. Francis.
Survivors include a brother, James E. Gregg of Cairo, N.Y.; a sister, Mary G. Drew of Conway; nephews, nieces, and many cousins. A brother, Captain Albert J. Gregg, Jr., and a sister, P.M. Terry Thompson, predeceased her.
At Cecilia's request, there will be no visiting hours. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Church in Milford. Burial will take place in Our Lady of the Mountains Cemetery in North Conway, in the spring. Arrangements are by Furber and White Funeral Home of North Conway.
Eleanor 'Sandy' Kenison
Eleanor "Sandy" Kenison, 63, of Denmark, Maine, died Saturday, January 16, 1999 at her home, following a long illness. She was born at Lawrence, Mass., a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Charnley.
She attended schools in Lawrence and in Bridgton, Maine, graduating from Bridgton High School in 1953.
Mrs. Kenison had been a tractor-trailer driver with her husband for six years prior to becoming a teller at the Bank of New Hampshire in North Conway. At the time of her death, she was assistant manager.
She was a member of the Pondicherry chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Rag Tag Singers.
She married Lawrence J. Kenison in 1954.
Her family includes her husband, of Denmark, Maine; a son, Gary L. Kenison of Casco, Maine; three daughters, Karolee Alexander of Burnsville, MN, Janet C. Kenison of Fryeburg, Maine and Laurel L. Kenison of Abington, Mass.; and a stepsister, Jane Berry of Bridgton, Maine; and six grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Friday at her home on the Mountain Road in Denmark. Arrangements are by the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Bridgton, Maine.
Wanda H. Littlefield
Wanda H. Littlefield, 74, of West Fryeburg, died Monday, January 18, 1999 at her home. She was born in Dorchester, Mass. on March 11, 1924, the daughter of Otto and Marjorie Hurney Neundorf and graduated from Roslindale High School, class of 1942. In 1943 her family moved to Fryeburg, and in 1945 she married Louis E. Littlefield.
She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and raising her children.
Her family includes her husband, Louis, of West Fryeburg; two daughters, Lynn A. McDevitt of South Portland, Maine and Jean Blais of West Falmouth, Maine; a sister, Jacquline Capen of Medfield, Mass; and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Meagan McDevitt; four sisters, Joan Blake, Marjorie Moulton, Beverly Kiesman, Vera LeBlanc; and by two brothers, John Barry and Paul Barry.
Visiting hours will be from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Wood Funeral Home in Fryeburg, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Joseph Whitlock officiating. Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, North Fryeburg.

Beatrice L. Appleton Patten
Beatrice L. Appleton Patten, 75, of Madison, died on Sunday, January 17, 1999 at her home.
She was born in Lynn, Mass. on April 4, 1923, and graduated from Lynn English High School. She worked at Appleton Chair Co., in Lynn, Mass. and later became part owner. Upon sale of the business in 1976, she moved to the Mount Washington Valley, where she became a licensed CNA. She worked for two years at Hicks Nursing Home in Fryeburg, Maine, and for over ten years in private homes throughout the valley.
Her family includes her husband, Walter Patten of Madison; three sons, Ronald Hicks of West Peabody, Mass., Philip Appleton of North Hampton, and David Appleton of Bartlett; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
