Eleanor J. Mitchell
Eleanor J. Mitchell, 82, of Parsonsfield, Maine, died Sunday, October 31, 1999 at the Chestnut Hill Benevolent Association in Brookline, Mass., following a brief illness. She was born May 6, 1917 in Norfolk, Va., a daughter of Lester and Margaret Flint Jacobs.
She was the daughter of a career officer in the Army Corps of Engineers, and moved around the country. She attended schools in Virginia and Louisiana, and attended Louisiana State University. Her mother was a writer, and won the Dodd-Mead novel of the year prize in 1937, and moved the family to Maine.
Mrs. Mitchell married in 1941 and served as a WAC from 1943 to 1945. Together with her husband, they settled in Lawrence, Mass., before moving to Delaware. She moved back to Maine in 1967 and taught special education at the Porter Elementary School. She finished her college degree at the University of Maine in Gorham in 1974, and retired from teaching in 1976.
She was active in the North Parsonsfield Public Library and the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Fryeburg. She enjoyed knitting and sewing, bird watching, travel and reading, and was active in a neighborhood book club.
Her husband of 52 years, Alexander Mitchell, died in 1993.
Her family includes a son, Ralph A. Mitchell of Limington, Maine; two daughters, Sara M. Gallant of Waldoboro, Maine, and Elizabeth J. Ward of Parsonfield, Maine; a brother, Ellis Jacobs of Mullen, Neb.; a sister, Edith Sternberg of Woodbury, Conn.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial gathering will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the North Parsonsfield Public Library. Sara Gallant will offer readings and will be assisted by Rev. J. Bradbury Mitchell. For those who desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the library or the church. Arrangements are by Heald Funeral Home, Limerick Chapel.
Pearl C. McAlister
Pearl C. McAlister, 92, of Lovell, Maine, died Sunday at the Fryeburg Health Care Center. She was born in Lovell, the daughter of Herbert and C. Ella Jackson McKeen, and was educated in Lovell schools.
For many years, she and her husband, Rodolph E. McAlister, who passed away in 1991, were the estate managers of the Eastman Hill Stock Farm. While living on the farm, she planted several flower gardens which are still there today. She enjoyed spending time at her family property on Heald Pond.
Her family includes a nephew, B. Dean Stearns of Lovell, a niece, Nancy Pitman of Cornish, several great-nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Ina Stearns and a brother, John McKeen.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Wood Funeral Home in Fryeburg with the Rev. Violet Eastman officiating. Burial will be in No. 4 Cemetery in Lovell.

Ida D. Moody
Ida D. Moody, 85, of Redstone, died October 28, 1999 at the Fryeburg Health Care Center, Fryeburg, Maine, after a long illness. She was born in Stony Creek, Conn., the daughter of Ozara and Maud Gagnon Desjardins. Mrs. Moody grew up in Lewiston, Maine, and lived in Bristol, Conn., in the 1940s before moving to Restone in 1949. She graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn, Maine, class of 1933.
Mrs. Moody had been a cook at the New England Inn in Intervale; she worked at the former Mears Heel Mill in Conway for several years, and also worked at the former Ben Franklin Store in Conway. Before retirement, she worked for over 30 years at the former Carroll Reed Distribution Center in Conway.
She had been a member of the North Conway American Legion Post 95 Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of the former International Order of Redmen Ladies Auxiliary in Conway. She was also a former member of the Redstone Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Her family includes a son, John R. Moody Jr. of Manchester; two grandchildren, Christopher A. Moody and Angela S. Moody, both of Manchester; a great-grandson, Christopher S. Moody of Manchester, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, John R. Moody Sr. in 1984, and by two brothers, Arthur A. Desjardins in 1996, and Norman O. Desjardins in 1963.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Mountains Church in North Conway. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway.

Mayo B. Cram
Mayo B. Cram, 86, of Fryeburg and Lovell, Maine, died Wednesday, October 27, 1999 at the Fryeburg Health Care Center. He was born in West Baldwin, Maine, the son of Delbert and Mary Baker Cram. He attended Baldwin schools and also a vocational high school in Springfield, Mass.
He lived in Lovell most of his life, and worked with the CCC in Evans Notch. He had been a logger, carpenter, and worked road maintenance for the state of Maine. He was a 60-year life member of the Greenleaf Lodge of Masons in Cornish, Maine, a life member of the National Trappers Association, a member of the Fryeburg Fish and Game, and Pythagorean Chapter OES.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and rock collecting.
His family includes John and Viola Cram of Fryeburg; Roberta and John Chandler of Lovell, Maine; a grandson, John Chandler; a step-grandson, Donald Eastman; step-granddaughter Elaine Strout, and a great-granddaughter, Lindsey Chandler.
He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Bell Cram, in 1991.
At Mayo's request, there will be no service.

Caroline B. Littlefield
Caroline B. Littlefield, 94, formerly of West Brownfield, Maine, died Wednesday, October 27, 1999 at the Hicks Assisted Living Center in Fryeburg. She was born in Boston and grew up in Brownfield, the daughter of Harry A. Barton Sr. and Estelle Harvey Barton. She attended the old Bean Memorial High School.
Mrs. Littlefield was a long-time active member of the Kezar Falls Assembly of God Church. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, crocheting and especially animals.
Her family includes a son, Howard Cady of Baldwin, Maine; a step-son, Frank Littlefield of North Conway; a brother, Frank Barton of West Brownfield, Maine; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Howard I. Littlefield, in 1959.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Kezar Falls Assembly of God Church, with Pastor Herbert Wilcox officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Brownfield.

Donald B. Halpin
Donald B. Halpin, 72, of West Ossipee, died Monday, October 25, 1999 at Huggins Hospital, Wolfeboro, following a long illness. He was born in Everett, Mass., the son of the late Joseph P. and Viola Dean Halpin.
Mr. Halpin graduated from Saugus High School, Saugus, Mass., in 1945. After serving in the Merchant Marines, he was employed by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and was a member of IBEW Local 104 for 33 years, prior to retiring in 1981.
He was an avid sportsman, serving as president of the Lynn Snowchasers Ski Club for two terms (1959-60; 1960-61), and was the treasurer of the Volunteer Yacht Club in Lynn, Mass., for two terms. He was also an avid musician, golfer, and fisherman.
His family includes his wife of 41 years, Jessie Bears Halpin of West Ossipee; four children, Judith A. Cox Rich of Moultonboro, Thomas E. Halpin of Virginia Beach, Va., Jane E. Patterson of Bristol, and Sheila S. Colby of Bristol; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two sisters, Jean Waddle of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Dorothy Bradford of Peabody, Mass.; a brother, Robert Halpin of Wells, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph D. Halpin, and two sisters, Myra H. Congdon and Carol Halpin Durgin.
There will be a memorial service at the Moultonville Methodist Church, Center Ossipee, on Sat., Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. Donations in his memory may be made to VNA/Hospice of Southern Carroll County, P.O. Johanna Harriet Bockhorn
Johanna Harriet Bockhorn, 66, died October 22, 1999 at her daughter's home after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was born March 25, 1933 in Atlantic Highlands, N.J., the daughter of Dorothy Pearle (Stringham) and Harry Bockhorn.
She attended QBI in White Plains, N.Y., and attended and raised money for the United Methodist Church in Mamaroneck, N.Y. She lived in Tamworth from 1952 until 1967, when she moved to Mamaroneck to start her own business, which she ran until 1989.
In 1993 she returned to the Mount Washington Valley for her retirement.
Her family includes a daughter, Sondra-Tiffany Brendt Luttrell of Freedom and Parsonsfield, Maine; two sisters, Dorothy Reis of Rhode Island and Marge Driscoll of New Jersey; two brothers, Martin J. Bockhorn of Philadelphia, Pa., and Harry Bockhorn of Staten Island, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews, and many friends.
She was predeceased by a son, Andrew A. Basile, in 1977, and by a daughter, Nina Basile, in 1958.
There will be no visiting hours. A service will be held Wednesday, October 17 at 1 p.m. in The Memorial Hospital Chapel at the Merriman House in North Conway. Private services for family members will be held in New York on November 27.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Eric H. Styffe Sr.
Eric H. Styffe Sr., 81, of Portland, Maine died Thursday at a Portland hospital following a brief illness.
He was born in Worcester, Mass., a son of Harold and Ethel Carlson Styffe. Mr. Styffe attended school in Worcester and was a 1936 graduate of Commerce High School. While in school, Mr. Styffe was a talented athlete. He excelled in golf and basketball. At the age of 17 he hit a hole-in-one on a par four hole at the Green Hill Golf Course in Worcester. He was a finalist in the Massachusetts Schoolboy Golf Championship which was held at Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland, Mass., in 1936. Following high school, Mr. Styffe attended and graduated from Becker Business College in Worcester.
In 1942, he married Clemence Foster in Boston, Mass.
During World War II, Mr. Styffe served in the army in the European theater of operation. He was involved in several campaigns and battles.
In 1949, Mr. Styffe moved to Portland, Maine. In the early 1950s he became the owner and operator of Ricky's Tavern on Portland Street. He retired in1975. Mr. Styffe was a life member of the South Portland VFW Post 832, a member of the Westbrook American Legion Post, and a former member of the Riverside Golf Course.
His family includes his wife, of Portland; three daughters, Colette Lankau of Sudbury, Mass., Marcia Styffe Mancini of Gray, Maine, and Nancy Manoogian of North Conway; a son, Eric H. Styffe Jr. of North Conway; a sister, Irene McClure of Naples, Fla.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Conroy-Tully Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, Maine. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
