At times, George collected discarded foods from Nashua homes to feed the family livestock and faced much ridicule for this from other young people. George remembered walking home from school during the Hurricane of ’37 and seeing the downed trees sinking to the bottom of Robinson Pond as well as the Merrimack River flooding up to the current Sovereign Bank area in Hudson. Kienia Road is named for George’s family; the original house there. He often bemoaned the fact that the 165 acres was sold for $9, 000 and that he didn’t purchase it.

Six months later he left for the Pacific Theater and reported to the 147th Infantry three weeks later. The USS John Polk transported his unit to Iwo Jima, their assignment being to flush out hidden Japanese.
Upon returning from the war, George worked delivering ice to area homes and later worked at Pratt Aircraft Plant in Connecticut. He then worked the family farm through the 50s, regularly driving produce to Boston, Massachusetts. When his mother and brother sold the farm, George progressed to an expert carper installer working for many years at Shattuck Rugs in Nashua. He eventually became self-employed in the same specialty until his retirement.
George was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed horse racing, scrap-metal recycling, and gardening. He was a founding member of the Hudson Fish and Game Club where he enjoyed many outings with the company of other sportsmen during his day. There, still exists his “tile” on their clubhouse floor. He was a lifelong member of Post 483 Nashua Veterans of Foreign Wars as well as a member of the Post 48 Hudson American Legion “The Foxhole.”
He bravely fought a 12-year battle with diabetes, enduring two and a half years of kidney dialysis up until his death.
