Virginia C. (Marshall) Sullivan
Virginia C. (Marshall) Sullivan, 72, of Salem, died October 14, 2007, at her home.
She was born in Medford, Massachusetts, where she grew up and attended schools. She later graduated from Wellesley Junior College. Mrs. Sullivan was a resident of Salem for the past 47 years, formerly of Wakefield, Massachusetts.
Mrs. Sullivan had previously worked for Rudy Pivovar at his flower shop in Windham. In the 1950s she worked as a secretary for the Governor of Massachusetts. She also water skied professionally at Cypress Gardens in Florida and had her private pilots license. Most of all she was a homemaker and her family was the most important thing in her life, especially her grandchildren. She would welcome anyone into her home and treat them as family.
She was predeceased by her brother Frank W. Marshall, Jr.
She is survived by her loving husband, James E. Sullivan; three sons, Winston and his wife Lynn Sullivan of Laconia, Jeffrey and his wife Aracelis Sullivan of Lawrence, Massachusetts, and Scott and his wife Tracy Sullivan of Salem; her stepmother, Laura Marshall of Salem; 11 grandchildren, Krystal, Susan, Stephanie, James, Christopher, Michael, Scotty, Roberto, Genesis, Kate and Craig; and two great grandchildren, Avery and Nathan.
A Memorial Service was held on October 18 at the Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home in Salem. Memorial contributions may be made to Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack Street, Bldg. 9, Lawrence MA 01843.
Margaret A. (McMahon) Callahan
Margaret A. (McMahon) Callahan, 74, of Atkinson, formerly of Salem, died October, 4, 2007, at her home in the company of her beloved husband.
Margaret was born in Newton, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Charles and Cora (Clarke) McMahon. She grew up in Watertown, Massachusetts, graduating from Watertown High School in 1951.
Margaret’s primary interest was her family and grandchildren with their mutual visits and the special arrangements she would provide for family gatherings in her home, especially during the holiday season. She enjoyed her frequent trips around the state looking for antiques and dining out with her coupons, always with her constant companion, Frank, “My Favorite Chauffer, ” she called him.
Margaret was very involved in her community serving as a Sunshine Lady with the Atkinson Garden Club, where she had won multiple awards including Garden of the Month, an activity that she treasured. She also was an avid reader and active member of the Atkinson Friends of the Library. Margaret “Sis” will be sorely missed and never forgotten.
She was predeceased by a brother Thomas McMahon.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, John “Frank” Callahan, a former supervisor with the Salem Department of Public Works; two sons, Jack and his wife Trish Callahan of Fremont and Dave and his wife Rachel Callahan of Haverhill, Massachusetts; two grandchildren, Meaghan and Samantha Callahan of Haverhill; a brother, Charles T. McMahon of Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Monday, October 8 at St. Luke the Evangelist in Plaistow; burial followed at the Atkinson cemetery in Atkinson. Christopher A. Habib
Christopher A. Habib, 43, of Panama City Beach, Florida, formerly of Salem, died October 4, 2007, in Salem.
He was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, grew up, and was educated in Salem where he graduated from Salem High School in 1981. He later attended Electrical School.
Chris was an electrician and worked for Coastal Electrical in Florida. He enjoyed deep sea fishing, scuba diving, bike riding, and camping, and most of all he loved the ocean.
He is survived by his parents Joseph and Janice (Samia) Habib of Salem; a brother and sister-in-law, Jonathan and Paula Habib of Taunton, Massachusetts; two nephews, Nicholas and Lucas Habib of Taunton; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated at Mary Queen of Peace Church in Salem on Monday, October 8; burial followed at the Pine Grove cemetery in Salem. The Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home of Salem was in charge of arrangements.
Richard P. Oliveri
Richard P. Oliveri, 66, of Salem, died unexpectedly October 6, 2007, at the Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Massachusetts.
Richard was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, and grew up in Everett, Massachusetts, graduating from Everett High School. He had lived in Salem for 43 years. Richard was a retired Iron Worker for Local 7 in Boston, Massachusetts.
Richard was a member of the Derry Salem Elks. He enjoyed golfing, boating, jet skiing and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife Suzanne (Blais) Oliveri of Salem; two sons, Detective Richard Oliveri, Jr., of Salem, and Sergeant Anthony Oliveri and his wife Rachel of Salem; three daughters, Dawn Vitiello of Salem, Kim and her husband Steve Eldredge of Derry, Gina and her husband Chris Tripp of Salem, and Lillian Oliveri of Salem; two sisters, Anna Aiello of Peabody, Massachusetts, Mary Dripps of Georgia; grandchildren Andrew, Derek, Nicholas, Christopher, Meghan, John, Brianna, Kyle, Kyleigh; a former spouse, Arlene (Spinelli) Oliveri of Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass was held Thursday, October 11 at St. Joseph Church in Salem; cremation to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. The Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home in Salem was in charge of arrangements.
Lena Gagnon
Lena Gagnon, age 91, died Friday, September 28, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
She was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, where she grew up and attended Sacred Heart School. She was a resident of Salem for the past 18 years, formerly of Lawrence.
Mrs. Gagnon was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse for Broadway Nursing Home in Methuen, Massachusetts. She was a member of Mary Queen of Peace Church in Salem.
She was predeceased by her husband Henry J. Gagnon, and 10 brothers and sisters, Eva, Rose, Jeannette, Alfred, John, Romeo, Edward, Albert, Arthur, and Paul.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Ralph Frye of Salem, and Mary and Gerard Fournier of Meriden, Connecticut; four grandchildren, Stephen Frye, Kathleen DeBlasi, Laura Applebaum, and Brian Fournier; and five great grandchildren, Corey, Cameron, Henry, Cecelia, and Dominic.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated Monday, October 1 at Mary Queen of Peace Church in Salem; burial followed in Sacred Heart cemetery in Andover, Massachusetts. Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home in Salem was in charge of arrangements.
Timothy McCord
Timothy Shawn McCord, 34, of Nashua died Wednesday, September 26, 2007, at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua.
He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on March 22, 1973, son of Stephen C. McCord of Lowell, and Kathy (Daley) Warren of Hudson.
Mr. McCord graduated summa cum laude from Hesser College in 1997 with an associate degree in Criminal Justice, of which he was very proud. He was employed as a correctional officer with Valley Street Jail in Manchester and then later attained rank of corporal with the Merrimack County Department of Corrections. He was an avid sports fan and especially loved football, basketball, baseball and hockey. He enjoyed weightlifting and playing all kinds of sports at the Nashua YMCA. Timothy loved his children and was a proud father and uncle.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his fiancé, Kerry Riedy of Nashua; one son, Aidan McCord of Nashua; two daughters, Alyssa McCord of Nashua and Kylee McCord of North Carolina; also Hannah Riedy of Nashua to whom Timothy was like a father; three brothers, Stephen McCord, Jr., of Nashua, Ryan Warren and Jeffrey Warren, both of Hudson; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Kerry and Don Morelli and Maria McCord, all of Nashua; a maternal grandmother, Kay Daley of Merrimack; and one niece, Meagan Morelli of Nashua.
A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, October 1 at Infant Jesus Church in Nashua. Alfred J. Sparta
Alfred J. Sparta, 91, of Salem, died Tuesday, October 2, 2007, at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Massachusetts.
Born in Beverly, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Carmella (DeGuardo) and Giuseppe Sparta. He was a Salem resident for 40 years. Alfred was a Paratrooper in the U. S. Army during Word War II.
Mr. Sparta retired as a foreman from New England Power. He previously worked as a Contactor with J and A Builders in Methuen. He was a member of VFW Post #8546 in Salem and he enjoyed bowling, watching sports and going to the track.
He was predeceased by his daughter Marie Calobrisi.
Mr. Sparta is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Angie (Messineo) Sparta of Salem; a brother, Sam Sparta of Methuen; nephews, Phil, Paul, and Sam Sparta, Paul and his wife Debbie Messineo; a sister-in-law, Sybil Messineo of Brewster, Massachusetts; and nieces, Christine Drake, and Janet and her husband Tristan Israel.
Calling hours will be Friday, October 5 from 9:30 – 11 a.m. at the Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main Street in Salem. Eugene J. Gaumont
Eugene J. Gaumont, 87, died peacefully Sunday, February 17, 2008, at his daughter’s home in Haverhill, Massachusetts, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, where he grew up and attended St. Joseph's School. He graduated from Central Catholic High School and attended Merrimack College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a resident of Salem for the past 36 years.
Mr. Gaumont was a retired Electronic Engineer for Raytheon Corp. in Andover and Bedford, Massachusetts. He was a devoted Catholic and a dedicated member of St. Joseph Church and the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Peterson Council, both in Salem. He was a Army veteran, serving during World War II. Eugene savored long summers at Lake Winnipesauke with his family. He was a boating and fishing enthusiast. He enjoyed reading, working around the house, and was a licensed ham radio operator.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Pauline Berube
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jacqueline (Mathon) Gaumont of Salem; a son, Andre Gaumont of Salem; two daughters, Renee and her husband Ron Dube of Haverhill, and Denise P. and her husband Michael J. Faucher of Salem; a son-in-law, Richard Berube of New Jersey; two brothers, John “Bob” Gaumont of Gilford, and Samuel Gaumont of Oregon; four sisters, Theresa Martineau of Methuen, Cecile Soucy-Lescarbeau of Methuen, Jeanne Bienvenue of Arizona, and Annette Lescarbeau of Florida; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, February 22, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Salem; burial will follow in St. Mary’s cemetery, Lawrence, Massachusetts. Memorial contributions may be made to the Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack Street, Building 9, Lawrence, MA 01843. The Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home in Salem was in charge of arrangements.
James E. Gilbertson
James E. Gilbertson, 40, of Litchfield, died unexpectedly February 4, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Gilbertson was born in Nashua on February 8, 1967, a son of James L. and Annette (Therrien) Gilbertson. He was the husband of Deborah Descoteaux-Gilbertson of Litchfield.
James had been employed by Goodyear.
Besides his parents and his wife of four years, he is survived by a stepson, Anthony Descoteaux of Litchfield; a sister, Deborah Campos and he husband Jorge of Chicago, Illinois; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on February 8 in Blessed John XXIII at Infant Jesus Church in Nashua. Internment was at St. Francis Xavier cemetery. The Anctil-Rochette and Son Funeral Home in Nashua handled arrangements.
William R. Schultz
William R. Schultz, 91, a life-long resident of Salem, died Saturday, February 16, 2008, at the Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Massachusetts, surrounded by his daughters.
A native of Salem, Mr. Schultz owned and operated Schultz Farm in North Salem. He was a member of the New Hampshire Farm Bureau, founder and charter member of the Salem Conservation Commission, member of the Derry Path Finders Snow Mobile Club, and the East Coast Antique Tractor Club. Mr. Schultz was a former volunteer fireman for the North Salem Fire Department. He enjoyed working on old tractors and traveling. His greatest passion was when he owned and trained his thoroughbred race horses.
He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret (Chadwick) Schultz.
He is survived by three daughters, Joanne and her husband Geoff Hammett of Salem, Margaret and her husband Roger Putnam of Salem, and Mary and her husband Thomas Campbell of Salem; four grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, and Melissa Putnam, and Kate Hammett; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday, February 21 at the Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home in Salem. Burial followed in Mount Pleasant cemetery, North Salem. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southeast Land Trust, PO Box 675, Exeter, NH 03833.
