John Henry Kolln
John Henry Kolln, of Bradenton, Fla., and North Conway, died May 7, 1999 after a long illness. He was in his early 80s. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Ernst and Lena Kolln.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and saw action in the Pacific Theater.
After leaving the employment of J.P. Morgan and the church pension fund, Mr. Kolln moved to North Conway in the early 1950s, where he worked at Carroll Reed's, and managed the old Rosenbloom store. He later purchased the Carter store and rechristened it Robbins and Kolln, to include "Grandma" Robbins, who ran the knitting and yarn department. He and his first wife, Florence Rudd Kolln, operated Robbins and Kolln for 25 years before retiring to Florida. The store was aptly named "The Country Department Store" and was considered one of the outstanding clothing stores in the region.
He was active in community affairs and was responsible for the beginning of the now well-known Rotary Radio Auction. He was a member of the Eastern Slope Ski Club and Hannes Schneider offered to give him ski lessons, but not being a skier, he declined. He and Wendell Lees and Joe Dodge were timers at many ski races, and he always said he was the only one to ride down instead of up on the Skimobile. Noted for his wit and good humor, he was called upon as a speaker for many years after selling his store.
He is survived by his wife, Mabel Tschol Kolln.
A memorial service will be scheduled for later this summer.
