JULIA E. EASTMAN
GRAVESIDE SERVICE
A graveside committal service for Miss Julia E. Eastman, 85, who died on March 10, 2004, will be held on Saturday afternoon, June 5, at 1 p.m. at the Colebrook Village Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster.
ROBERT HUGHESE
Robert T. ³Bob² Hughes, 88, of Berlin, died on Saturday evening, May 29, 2004 at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin.
Mr. Hughes was born in West Warwick, R.I. on December 15, 1915, the son of John and Clara (Morris) Hughes. He was graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1939 and moved to Berlin, where he began a 43-year teaching career in the Berlin Public Schools.
In acknowledgment of his enormous impact on the high school art department, Mr. Hughes was officially recognized by the State of New Hampshire as "Teacher of the Year" in 1975. In the 1960s, he worked as a graphic designer and found himself the recipient of numerous awards and commissions, from then until the present. These include being a John Hays Fellow, Rhode Island School of Design's Alumni of the Year in 1989, and the Governor's award as New Hampshire's Living Treasure in 1991, as well as being featured on the New Hampshire Crossroads and in the video, "The City that Trees Built," a documentary about Berlin.
Throughout his career, Mr. Hughes has been an active participant in many local art celebrations including the White Mountain Art and Music Festival which he helped found, and the North Country Chamber Players Summer Festival and Music in the Schools programs.
Although primarily a sculptor, Mr. Hughes has worked in all mediums, including woodcuts and design. His works are also on display in the Concord State Library, the Living Treasure's Gallery and private galleries and homes. He has commissioned works in the New Hampshire State Prison and the Coös County Court House, as well as other public spaces in New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He had a one-man show at Urban Architecture in New York City in June and July of 2000, and his most recent show was during May, 2001 at Artspace in Birmingham, Mich.
In 2002, Bob was chosen as one of the artists from New Hampshire to design an ornament for the White House Christmas tree. He and his wife attended a reception at the White House in December honoring the artists. Bob has just finished a large bird mobile for the new Veterans' Home in Tilton, and it was installed in the autumn of 2003. His design was chosen as part of the Percent for Art program. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II and a member Good Shepherd Parish.
Members of the family include his wife Marie (Malvaso) Hughes of Berlin, a teacher at Stratford Public School; a daughter, Sharon Kruger and her husband Jurgen of Cossayuna, N.Y.; a son, Kevin Hughes and his wife Margy of Fairhaven, N.J.; a granddaughter, Patricia Whittemore and her husband Andy of New Jersey; a grandson and a nephew. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ann (Duggan) Hughes.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday morning, June 3 at St. Anne Church of Good Shepherd Parish at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends called at the Bryant Funeral Home, in Berlin on Wednesday evening. WILLIAM T. KING JR.
William T. King Jr., 71, of Guildhall, died on Friday afternoon, May 28, 2004 at Concord Hospital in Concord.
Mr. King was born in North Stratford, one of fifteen children, on November 2, 1932, the son of William T. and Carmen (Dupuis) King.
Raised in North Stratford, he worked for a time for the Canadian Central Railroad. He went on to serve in the Army in the Korean War and was decorated with several medals, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. At one time he worked for several years for the New Hampshire Highway Department, and for seventeen years he was employed with F.B. Spaulding in Lancaster, where he delivered grain. More recently he drove the Head Start bus in Groveton for six years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also loved cooking and gardening.
Family members include his wife, Charlotte (Eastman) King of Guildhall; five sons, Daniel King of Groveton, Warren King of N. Chelmsford, Mass., Lindsay King of Guildhall, Brian King and David King, both of Lancaster; a brother, Armand King of Lancaster; six sisters, Rita Emerson of Lancaster, Orleans Jeffers of Westbrook, Maine, Gloria Brooks of Lancaster, Joyce Holden of Lebanon, Darlene Henry of North Stratford, and Carol Sibulkin of Hooksett; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, John King.
Visiting hours were held on Tuesday evening, June 1 at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday morning at All Saints Church in Lancaster, with The Rev. Raymond Ball, pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors followed in Ridgwell Cemetery, Guildhall.
BETTINA LABAR
A memorial service for Mrs. Bettina A. (Gray) LaBar, 88, of West Stewartstown, who died on December 15, 2003, will be conducted on Thursday, June 3 at 1 p.m. at the Jenkins Funeral Home, with The Reverend Priscilla Hull officiating. An interment service will follow at the Colebrook Village Cemetery.

ADELE PRESTON
Adele M. (Teichmueller) Preston, 91, of Canaan and a former longtime Salem, N.H., resident, died on May 28, 2004 at the Coös County Nursing Hospital in West Stewartstown.
Mrs. Preston was born in Chelsea, Mass., and had resided in Belmont, Mass. She was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Salem for many years, where she was a member of the Philathea Class and active with several church activities. She attended schools in Pasadena, Calif.
She was the widow of Paul Preston, who died in 1979. Survivors include her son, Roger Preston, and is wife Susan of Canaan; a brother, Charles Miller of Florida; and two grandchildren. Private funeral services were held on Saturday, May 29 at the Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home in Salem, followed by burial in Pine Grove Cemetery in Salem. LOUISE RAINVILLE
Mrs. Louise A. (Covell) Rainville, 78, of Colebrook, died on Friday afternoon, May 28, 2004 at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital in Colebrook.
Mrs. Rainville was born on June 17, 1925 in Colebrook, daughter of the late Wilfred and Marion (Reed) Covell.
Mrs. Rainville was a homemaker. She was an avid reader and folk artist, and loved to garden. She enjoyed spending summers at her camp on Lake Wallace, and for a number of winters she traveled south to Florida with her late husband of over 56 years, Robert W. Rainville.
Mrs. Rainville is survived by two sons, Kent Rainville and his wife Roslyn of Mossy Head, Fla., and Robert Rainville and his wife Mary of Colebrook; four sisters, Geri Covell of Hornell, N.Y., Pat Kenny of Lunenburg, Vt., Faye Harris of Northamp-ton, Mass., and Carol Berry of Andover, N.H.; and five grandchildren.
Mrs. Rainville is preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert W. Rainville, on April 2, 1999. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, June 11 at 2 p.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Colebrook, with The Reverend Priscilla Hull officiating.

BERTHA SAUNDERS
Bertha D. Saunders, 96, of South Hero, Vt., died unexpectedly on Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
She was born in Pittsburg on September 20, 1907, the fourth child of Andrew J. and Ida (Woodward) Holmes.
On September 14, 1931, she was married to Albert Marvin Saunders in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Mrs. Saunders was employed by the Department of Agriculture in the soil conservation department.
She is survived by a son, Rodney Saunders, and his wife Joan of Plattsburgh; daughter Beverly James and husband David of Humble, Texas; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert M. Saunders, on September 14, 1999, and siblings Doris Reynolds, Shirley Holmes and Russell Holmes.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 1 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Colchester, with burial following at Mountainview Cemetery in Essex Center. Visiting hours were held on Monday, May 31 at the Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home in Burlington. Donations may be made in her memory to C.I.D.E.R. BOB OWEN
Mr. Bob Owen, 79, of Stewartstown, died early on Sunday morning, June 6, 2004 at the Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield.
Mr. Owen was born on February 28, 1925, in Stewartstown, and lived a very interesting life. He attended North Hill School in Stewartstown and as a young man, hauled guests to the Hurlbert sporting camps by a team of horses and sleigh.
He worked in the woods for his uncle, Bill Owen, skidding logs and driving teams, and he hauled canned milk for another uncle, Nelson Owen. He worked in construction for Clyde Gray for over 20 years while also driving truck for Lewis Oil from Portland, Maine, during the winter months.
His employment also included working for Lucien Dion for 10 years and for George Gould running a payloader. He operated a hydraulic loader for Warren "Pic" Haynes. He retired in 1982, but continued working part-time for the McAllaster farm in Stewartstown until his health would not allow him to continue.
Mr. Owen is survived by his family: Rod McAllaster, his wife Donna and son Paul of Stewartstown; a brother, Peter Daley of Lemington; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Almore Owen Daley, and a brother, John Daley. Calling hours were held on Tuesday evening, June 8 at the Jenkins Funeral Home in Colebrook. A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, June 9 at 1 p.m. at the North Hill Church in Stewartstown, with Pastor Larry Clough officiating. An interment service will follow at the Stewartstown Hollow Cemetery.

FREDERICK BOND
Frederick Carlton Bond, 77, of Colebrook, died on Friday, June 18, 2004 at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital in Colebrook after a brief illness.
He was born on August 30, 1926 in Holden, Mass., the son of George C. and Mae E. (White) Bond. He attended Worcester Boys' Trade High School, and during World War II he left school to serve in the Navy. After his military service he returned to graduate from high school.
Mr. Bond was married to Alice F. Russ on January 1, 1971. He was employed as a carpenter and worked many years for Alden research in Worcester, Mass., building models for research projects. Prior to his retirement in 1989 he was employed by Worcester Poly Tech as a carpenter. Soon after retirement he moved to Colebrook, where he continued woodworking and other small projects. Mr. Bond was very active in the Kiwanis Club of Colebrook. He enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, and raising chickens.
Mr. Bond is survived by his wife, Alice Bond of Colebrook; two sons, Gary L. Bond of Springfield, Vt., and Ronald S. White of Randolph Center, Vt.; five daughters, Sheila A Goodreau of Worcester, Mass., Gale M. Fairbrother of Springfield, Vt., Patricia Deal of Waterbury Center, Vt., Carol Record of Randolph, Vt., and Judith McCullough of Bethel, Vt.; two sisters, Marguerite Counter of Worcester, Mass., and Mildred Dixon of Plant City, Fla.; by 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
There will no calling hours. Funeral services with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 24 at the Monadnock Congregational Church in Colebrook, officiated by the Reverend Edward Jaeger. Burial will take place at West Hill Cemetery in Williamstown, Vt., on Saturday, June 26. Donations in memory of Frederick C. RICHARD FRIZZELL
Richard Frizzell died at his home in Newland, N.C., on Tuesday, June 15, 2004.
He was born in Colebrook on May 1, 1932, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Frizzell. He was graduated with the Class of 1950 from Colebrook Academy.
He joined the Marines soon after graduation and served for four years, doing a tour of duty in Korea for over a year.
Richard was a very friendly, good-hearted man, always ready to lend a helping hand to his friends or anyone who needed it. He loved to stop and visit with friends.
He was a partner of the Quality Shrubbery business, which he had owned for many years. He ran the business end from his home for the past few years due to failing health.
He enjoyed his visits back to Colebrook spending time with his family and old friends.
His pride and joy were his son, Jeff, grandson Jake and daughter-in-law Vickie.
He is survived by his son and family; two sisters, Leona Charest of Wildwood, Fla., and Colebrook, and Jessica Cava-naugh of Colebrook; and several nieces and nephews.

DORIS FUND
Mrs. Doris M. (Morrison) Fund of Chiefland, Fla., died in Chiefland on June 4, 2004. She was 83 years old.
Mrs. Fund was born in Canaan and moved to Chiefland 20 years ago. She was a housewife. Survivors include her husband Bill Fund of Chiefland; stepsons William Fund of Virginia Beach, and Terry Fund of Delaware; daughter Donna Greenwood of Brandon, Fla.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Donations may be made to Hospice of the Tri-Counties, Chiefland. Funeral arrangements were under the care of Knauff Funeral Home in Chiefland.
RUTH HAGGERTY
Ruth Haggerty, 66, of Concord, died on June 19, 2004 at Hospice House.
She was born on August 23, 1937 in Deerfield, the daughter of Raymond and Anne (Percil) Petts.
She lived in Nashua before moving to Concord about 12 years ago. She had worked as a home health aid for Visiting Nurse Association. She also owned and operated Robert's Country Store in North Stratford. She had attended Faith Tabernacle Church since 1995.
The family includes her husband, Richard D. Haggerty of Concord; a son, Glenn Haggerty, of Milford; two daughters, Linda S. Kerttu of Concord and Julie Michaud of Nashua; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, John Noraig, of Bedford; a sister, Betty Costa, of Nashua; nieces and a nephew.
There are no calling hours. A memorial service was held on Tuesday at Faith Tabernacle Church.AFCS-Affordable Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., is in charge of arrangements.
