JANICE E. CROSS
Janice E. Cross, 75, of Colebrook, died on Saturday evening, July 27, 2002 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon after a long illness.
She was born on April 30, 1927 in Stewartstown, the daughter of Darwin and Mildred (Parkhurst) Brooks Sr., and attended North Hill School in Stewartstown. Her past employment includes Ethan Allen Furniture in Beecher Falls, Tillotson Rubber in Dixville Notch, Stratford Plywood in North Stratford, and Colebrook Dry Cleaners in Colebrook. Additionally, she worked for several years as a self-employed painter. Ms. Cross enjoyed traveling and visiting relatives as often as possible. She liked camping, fishing, bowling and taking jeep rides in the country.
She is survived by a son, Ricky Cross of Stewartstown; two grandchildren, Rachel Cross and her fiancé Josh Riendeau of Colebrook and Cheryl Cross of Stewartstown; and a great-grandchild, Justin Cross of Stewartstown. Ms. Cross was predeceased by three brothers, Martin, Weldon and Darwin Jr.; three sisters, Evelyn, Lucille and Eleanor; and by a granddaughter, Heather Cross.
Calling hours for Janice Eva Cross were held on Tuesday, July 30 at the Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31 at Trinity Methodist Church in Colebrook, with the Reverend Priscilla Hull and the Reverend Albert Bellefeuille officiating.

EURIELLE RITA MASON
Eurielle Rita Mason, 70, of Groveton, died at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center on July 23, 2002 following a brief illness.
She was born on September 26, 1931 in Quebec to Charles Roche and Laura (Bernier) Boudrias. She was a resident of Groveton except for the years she and her husband resided on the Mason Farm in Brunswick, Vt.
Eurielle attended Catholic School in Newport, Vt. and gained her degree in phlebotomy through the College of Lifelong Learning. She was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Groveton, a member of the former Daughters of Pythius of Stratford, an associate member of the Groveton Ambulance Corp., and a member of the Stratford VFW Auxiliary. She served as a volunteer for the Groveton Thrift Shop during the mid-1990s where her favorite thing was working in the infant department.
While living in Brunswick she served as Town Clerk, and worked many years at Weeks Hospital in Lancaster as a Lab Technician. Following her retirement in 1993 she became a patient-sitter, also for Weeks Hospital, and had a private patient in Groveton. She was an artist with the crochet hook and collected any memorabilia pertaining to cats. Eurielle was one of the first people to respond with food and beverages to the volunteers whenever there was a fire. She was called "Mom" by nearly everyone who knew her, especially the younger people. Her goal was to live each day to the fullest, as life is always too short.
Eurielle is survived by a daughter, Sandra "Sandy" Mason of Groveton; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three brothers, Albert Boudrias of Manchester, Conn., Maurice "Mac" Boudrias of Turner Falls, Mass. and Edmund Boudrias of Texas; a sister, Lauretta Shelley, of Jefferson, Mass.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Grant H. Mason, in 1985; her son Charles Mark in 1996; a brother, Hector, in 1992; and a sister, Evangeline, in 1999.
Calling hours were held on Thursday, July 25 at the Main-Armstrong Funeral Home in Groveton, with the service following at the funeral home. Father Daniel Deveau of St. Francis Xavier Church officiated. Burial and committal services took place on Saturday, July 27 at the Smith-Gardner Cemetery in Brunswick, with the Rev. Brendan Whittaker officiating.

ROBERT DAVIS
Robert George Davis, 71, of Colebrook, died on Wednesday, September 25, 2002 at his residence.
Mr. Davis was born on July 24, 1931 at home on the Davis Farm in Colebrook, the son of the late Homer Cleveland and Ruth (Hammond) Davis.
Mr. Davis attended Colebrook Academy, graduating in 1949, and was a member of the Future Farmers of America, 4-H and the Boy Scouts of America. He worked on the family farm until graduation, and then farmed for Wilfred Rainville.
He served in the Army during the Korean War as a radio operator. After receiving an honorable discharge, he owned and operated Sims Dairy with his brother, Perley, from 1955-1971. In the fall of 1971, he went to work for the New Hampshire Highway Department and retired in 1991 as a highway patrol foreman after 20 years of service. He then worked for Nugent Motor Company as a bus driver.
Mr. Davis will be remembered as a distinguished Mason, having served as Secretary for 24 years and as Past Master of Evening Star Lodge #37, F&AM, Colebrook; Past High Priest of North Star Royal Arch Chapter #16, Lancaster; Past Thrice Illustrious Master of Evening Star Cryptic Council #13, Colebrook; North Star/St. Gerard Commandery #4, Littleton; District Deputy Grand Master of the Fifth Masonic District; Senior Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire; a member of Profile York Rite College #100, and Scottish Rite bodies; Past Patron of Eureka Chapter OES #2, Colebrook; and a honorary member of Friendship Lodge #66, Sawyerville, Quebec. He was also a member of the George L. O'Neil American Legion Post #62 in Colebrook, the Mohawk Grange and the Monadnock Congregational Church.
Mr. Davis is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, JoAnn (Parker) Davis of Colebrook; his daughter, Deanna "DeeDee" Stacey of Louisville, N.C.; his son, Homer Robert Davis and his wife Sonia of Colebrook; two sisters, Bernadine Stanton of Colebrook, and Barbara Schiavone and her husband John of Morrisville, N.Y.; two brothers, Harold Davis of Colebrook, and Perley Davis and his wife Janice of Colebrook; a sister-in-law, Betty Parker Nicholson of Colebrook; five grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Davis is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Helen Placy and Mary Ruth Davis.
Calling hours were held on Saturday, September 28 at the Jenkins Funeral Home. A funeral service was conducted on Sunday at the Monadnock Congregational Church, with the Reverend Granvyl G. Hulse Jr. officiating. A Masonic service followed, and interment services were at the Colebrook Village Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Emmy Ladd, Ralph Lynch, Barry Jenkins, Dennis Couture, Ricky Parker and George Heald.

LOYAL GASSMAM
Loyal Paul Gassman Sr., 88, of Freeport, Ill., died on Monday, September 23, 2002 at Freeport Memorial Hospital.
Born on December 1, 1913 in Freeport, he was the son of Isaac P. and Florence (Munn) Gassman. He was married to Patricia A. Mathews on May 23, 1942, and she died in October, 1983. He was married to Lois M. Breed on August 11, 1984.
He received his bachelor of science degree from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. and was a World War II Army veteran.
He worked at Micro Switch Company in Freeport, and then at Universal Packaging in Bow, N.H. until his retirement. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Golden K. Kiwanis and the Washington and Lee Alumni Association.
The family includes his wife, Lois, of Freeport; three daughters, Mary Cyrulik of Waukesha, Wisc., Paulette (Gerald) Owen of Colebrook and Patricia (Scott) Moore of Freeport; four sons, Loyal P. (Paula) Gassman Jr. of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Eugene (Hedy) Gassman of Indiana, Richard (Judy) Gassman of Greensboro, N.C. and David Gassman of Freeport; twenty-one grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Patricia; a son, George G. Gassman; a grandchild, Hannah Owen; a son-in-law, Robert Cyrulik; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Gassman. Funeral service was held on Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church in Freeport, with the Reverend Mary Ann Hill officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum. Friends called on Friday evening at Walker Mortuary. A memorial has been established in his name.
SIMONNE HARTSHORN
Simonne Ann Hartshorn, 51, of Central Bridge, N.Y., died on September 21, 2002 at her residence after a brief illness.
Ms. Hartshorn was born on May 17, 1951 in Bloomfield, the daughter of Brewster and Helen (Fuller) Bennett. She had resided in Central Bridge since August, and had previously resided in Sloansville, Fla. and New Hampshire.
She was educated in Vermont and was a homemaker for most of her life.
She was a member of the Eagles Aries Lodge 2629 in New Hampshire.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard (Lori) Bennett, of Central Bridge, N.Y. and Walter (Michelle) Hartshorn of Dalton, N.H.; three brothers, Dale Bennett of Derby Line, Vt., Ronald Bennett of Gilman, Vt. and Wayne Bennett of North Stratford; a sister, Corrine Blodgett, of Stratford; and a step-grandson, Scott Wood.
Services and burial will be private. Funeral arrangements are by the Langan Funeral Home of Central Bridge, N.Y.
WILFRED MAILHOT
Wilfred J. Mailhot, 83, formerly of Manchester and a resident of south Florida for 48 years, died on September 24, 2002.
The family includes his wife of 56 years, Marguerite Mailhot, of Margate, Fla.; six daughters, Jeannine Meyer of Margate, Constance Whisenhunt of Maple Heights, Ohio, Monique Barone of Douglas City, Calif., Jeanne Carracher of Coral Springs, Fla., Michelle Bagley of Parkland, Fla., Annette Sweet of Jacksonville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a brother, Andrew Mailhot, of Manchester; three sisters, Alice Levasseur of Haverhill, Mass., Jeanette Lacquerre of Colebrook and Dora Hoff of Hartford, Conn.
He was predeceased by a son, Donald, and a daughter, Denise Buss.
He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post 222 and a member of the Moose Lodge 2267. Arrangements for burial were made in Margate.
THEO PARKER
Theo Parker, 61, of Lancaster, died on Sunday evening, September 29, 2002 at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster after a long illness.
Theo was born in Lemington on October 25, 1940, the daughter of Earl Washington and Annie May (Bumford) Parker.
She was raised in Colebrook and was a graduate of Colebrook Academy. For most of her life she resided with her family in Lancaster, with a brief return to Colebrook for a few years. She has been a homemaker all her life, with occasional employment at local mills, Ethan Allen and the Balsams. Some of her favorite pastimes were knitting, crocheting, and making dolls and doll clothing. She enjoyed home cooking and spending time with her grandchildren.
Family members include five children, Paula Dupont of Whitefield, Paul Barrows Jr. of Columbia, Melissa Rasberry of Lancaster, Joy Cass of Jefferson and Lisa Harding of Pittsburg; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evangeline (Parker) Howe of Colebrook and Truliene (Parker) Gaudette of Columbia; three half-sisters, JoAnn (Parker) Davis of Colebrook, Beverly (Parker) Nicholson of Colebrook and Winona (Allen) Hanson of Portland, Maine; three brothers, Lyford Parker of Colebrook, Larry Parker of Columbia and Lynford Parker of Earlton, N.Y.; and a half-brother, Stanley Allen of Lake Dallas, Texas. She was proceded in death by her parents; a sister Emily (Parker) Seaman; a half-sister Leona Allen; and three half-brothers, Leonard Parker, Bertram Parker and Randolph Allen.
There are no calling hours. A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday morning, October 5, at 10 a.m. at the Kilkenney View Cemetery in Jefferson. The Rev. Dean A. Stiles, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Berlin, will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster.
LOIS STEVENS
Lois M. Stevens, 70, of Groveton, died at her residence on September 24, 2002 after a sudden illness.
Born on July 21, 1932 in Concord, Vt., she was the daughter of Sherman Sr. and Crissie (Perkins) Crawford. She has resided in Groveton for four years, coming from Lancaster for two years and after living most of her life in Dalton. She was a member of the East Concord Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary, Post #41, Whitefield. She loved going to camp at Seymour Lake. She loved spending time with her family, friends and her cat, Spot.
Lois is survived by her daughter, Dianne, and her husband Norman Bartlett of Stratford; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; her sister, Barbara Isham, of Whitefield; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard, in 1995, and two brothers, Carroll Crawford and Sherman Crawford Jr.
Calling hours were held on Friday, September 27 at the Main-Armstrong Funeral Home in Groveton. Funeral services were held on Saturday in the funeral home, with the Rev. Fred Lawrence, pastor of the Groveton United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial followed in the Cushman Cemetery in Dalton.

JOHN SULLIVAN
John "Sully" Sullivan, 80 of Groveton, died at Weeks Memorial Hospital on September 27, 2002 after a sudden illness.
Born on July 22, 1922 in Berlin. He was a son of Michael and Mary (Shamulka) Sullivan, and was a resident of Groveton most of his life. He was a graduate of Groveton High School, Class of 1940. He served in the Navy during World War II, earning the Purple Heart.
He was married to Theresa C. Stolarski in Pottsville, Pa., on November 1, 1947. He attended Burdett College in Boston, graduating in 1956 with a degree in sales management. While at college he was the girls' basketball coach.
He was appointed as the first Rural Letter Carrier for the Groveton area, where he served until his retirement. He served on the Board of Trustees for Weeks Memorial Hospital. He served on the Groveton School Board, and was a bus driver for the school. He also served as Director of the Groveton Youth Center, working as lifeguard and swimming instructor. He was a past president of the Groveton Trailblazers Snowmobile Club, and most recently served as a member of the Juvenile Diversion Program.
Mr. Sullivan was a life member of both the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion Fredonwarell Post 17 in Groveton.
John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Theresa "Ted" Sullivan of Groveton; two daughters, Holly Paradis of Groveton and Linda Curtis of Lemington; a son, Brian Sullivan, of Groveton; two granddaughters and a grandson; and several cousins in New York.
He was predeceased by an infant son, John Michael Sullivan, in 1966; and by three brothers, Fred Sullivan, Michael Sullivan and Nicholas Sullivan.
Calling hours were held on Sunday, September 29 at the Main-Armstrong Funeral Home in Groveton. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, September 30 at the St. Francis Xavier Church in Groveton, with Fr. Daniel Deveau, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place on Thursday, October 3 at 10 a.m. in the Northumberland Cemetery.

EUNICE THURSTON
Eunice M. Thurston, 87, of Errol, died on Friday, September 27, 2002 at her residence. Mrs. Thurston was born on April 16, 1915, in Magalloway, Maine, the daughter of the late Claude and Mildred (Storey) Linnell.
Mrs. Thurston attended Magalloway Elementary School and was graduated from the Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine. She was employed as a tax collector for 29 years for the Town of Errol and as a bookkeeper for Mike Thurston for 17 years. She also worked as a chef for The Red Spot, a sporting camp on Umbagog Lake. Her many interests included membership in the Errol Congregational Church, where she served as the past treasurer. She was a member of the White Mountain DAR, a lifetime member of the Aziscoös Grange and past member of Eureka Chapter OES #2. She will be remembered for her love of family and life, her limitless energy for taking walks and her service to the community.
Mrs. Thurston is survived by her loving husband, Norman O. Thurston of Errol; two sons, Ralph Thurston and his wife Jone of Wells, Maine, and Paul E. Thurston and Ms. Dianne Ingalls of Lancaster; a daughter, Frances Sytek and her husband Dick of Colebrook; a brother, Claude Linnell Jr. of Fryeburg, Maine; two sisters, Cleo Bennett and Edna Williams, both of Colebrook; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Thurston is preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Eleanor MacDonald and Elva Jordan.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be conducted on Sunday, October 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Errol Congregational Church, with Larry Clough, Licensed Minister, officiating. An interment service will follow at the Errol Village Cemetery. Friends are invited to attend a reception at the Log Haven at noon, whether or not they are able to attend the church service.

NANCY AMES
Nancy G. Ames, 67, of Colebrook, died suddenly on Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at Concord Hospital.
She was born in Frankfort, Indiana, on February 12, 1935, a daughter of Floyd and Mabel (Aughe) Ghere.
A 1955 graduate of Indiana State University, Nancy taught elementary school for several years in both Indiana and Colebrook. A devoted wife and loving mother, her generous ways and kind spirit will be lovingly remembered by all those whose hearts she touched. Since becoming a resident of Colebrook in 1959, Nancy was an avid supporter of local sports teams. Nancy is survived by her husband of 43 years, Paul N. Ames, of Colebrook; five daughters, Diane A. Ulmer of Roanoke, Va.; Cheryl Ann Ames of Fla., Anita G. Ames of Tampa, Fla., Roxanne R. Carapezza of Marlborough, Mass., Loralee L. Ames of Concord; a son, Eric W. Ames, of Concord; four grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce Ghere and Betty Ghere, both of Frankfort, Ind.; and several cousins.
She was predeceased by a sister, Marie Ghere.
There are no calling hours. At her request her body has been donated to medical science.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date.

CLIFFORD ANNIS
Clifford L. Annis, 86, died on Sunday, November 17, 2002 at Colonial Manor in Zearing, Iowa.
He was born in Stratford to Lyman and Cora (Simms) Annis on July 16, 1916. He lived most of his early years in Colebrook.
After high school, he attended the University of New Hampshire. He was graduated in 1941 and was hired by Swift and Co. as a hatcheryman in Centerville, Iowa.
In 1955 he moved to Story City, Iowa, and worked for Ames In-Cross of Roland. After the company closed, Clifford worked for Iowa State University. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Story City and of the Alpha Gamma Roe fraternity, and loved to garden and fish.
Clifford is survived by his wife, Pearle (Peggy) of Story City; a daughter, Elaine Lovig of Story City; three sons, Fred Annis of Indianola, Iowa, Donald Annis of Galesville, Wisc., and Michael of Athens, Ga.; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Clifford was preceded in death by his parents and a grandchild, Michele Lovig Braatz.
