Albert H. Farnsworth, NEW LONDON

NEW LONDON - Albert H. Farnsworth, 82, of Morgan Lane, died Thursday at home.
He was born in Boston, the son of Albert and Reaetta (Humphries) Farnsworth. He spent his early years in Worcester, Mass., and graduated from Worcester Classical High School, Worcester Academy and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He later received a master's degree from Clark University in Worcester, Mass.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy, aboard the USS Wasp, as a photographic interpreter in the Pacific Theater and attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
He had been the executive director of Holiday magazine for many years, the editor of the United Nations Association magazine Vista and a speech writer for the secretary general of the United Nations.
He also had worked as an editor for the Little Brown Publishing Co. of Boston, while living in Greenwich, Conn., and Wynnewood, Pa. He and his wife retired to New London in 1983.
He had summered on Little Squam Lake, Holderness, since he was 12 years old, and was a director of the Squam Lakes Association.
He was an avid skier and a former member of the Country Squires of New London.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty (Phillips) Farnsworth of New London; a daughter, Nancy Fleming of Winchester, Mass.; two grandsons; two sisters, Nancy Funkhouser of Lebanon, N.J., and Barbara Sheldon of West Springfield, Mass., and several nieces and nephews.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial services will be held today at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of New London. The Rev. Richard Dutton, pastor, will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, 54 Portsmouth St., Concord 03301-5400.

Mary M. Callahan

Mary M. Callahan, 69, of Alice Drive, died Sunday at Concord Hospital after a short illness.
She was born in Concord, the daughter of Michael and Mary (Bresnahan) Callahan. She was a 1947 graduate of St. John's High School.
She was a lifelong Concord resident.
She worked in the medical records department of the Concord Hospital for 38 years.
She was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church and a 45-year-member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, holding several offices at both the local and state levels. She was also a member of the Carmelite Guild.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Donald Callahan and the Rev. Frances Callahan; and two sisters, Anne Callahan and Sister Kathleen Callahan.
She is survived by two brothers, Joseph Callahan of Glendale, Ariz., and Brian Callahan of Litchfield, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., in the Waters Funeral Home, 50 S. Main St., Concord.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at noon in St. John the Evangelist Church, 72 S. Main St., Concord. The Rev. James Watson, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial take place after the service in Calvary Cemetery.

Martha C. Carr
Monday, January 18, 1999
Martha C. Carr, 82, of Daniel Webster Highway and formally of Broadcove Drive in Concord, died Friday at the Merrimack County Nursing Home.
She was born in Concord, the daughter of Charles and Ethel (Allen) Carter. She lived in the Concord area her entire life.
She was a graduate of Concord High School, Class of 1935. She worked for the state as a bookkeeper and auditor, and for New Hampshire Distributors.
She owned and operated Carr's Garage in Boscawen for many years.
She attended the Boscawen Congregational Church. She was the widow of Wilfred Carr who died in 1987.
She is survived by her step-daughter, Lorna Beaulieu of Hampton, Va.; two step-grandchildren; a borhter, Charles Carter Jr., of Hampton, Va.; a sister, Jane Heath of Boscawen; and several nieces and nephews.
There are no calling hours. Graveside funeral services will be held on Wednesday at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Boscawen at 10 a.m. The Rev. John Johnson will officiate. The Wendell J. Butt Funeral Home, 42 Washington St., Penacook, is in charge of the arrangements.
Denis C. Champagne

Denis C. Champagne, 33, of Ward Street in Manchester dies Thursday.
He was born in Manchester, the son of Denis and Jennie (Click) Champagne and lived in Candia before returning to Manchester several years ago.
He was self-employed as a carpenter. He attended Moore School in Candia and graduated Manchester Central High School, Class of 1983.
He was predeceased by his father, Denis Champagne Sr. in 1977.
He is survived by his mother, Jennie Campagne Hayes, of Candia; a stepfather, William Hayes, of Candia; grandparents Marcus and Grace Click of Newport; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial reception will be held at the Maiden-Petrin Funeral Home, Four Corners, Candia, today from 3 to 5 p.m. The funeral and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lake Sunapee Visiting Nurse Association, 76 S. Main St., Newport, or to the charity of one's choice.
Catherine Maltais

Catherine Maltais, 97, died yesterday at Harris Hill Nursing Home.
She was born in Ireland and had been a longtime resident of Concord.
She was employed at the Concord Theater and as an aide at New Hampshire Hospital for many years. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church.
Survivors include her son, Eugene Maltais of Suncook; three daughters, Christina Cone, Corrine Wheeler and Winnifred Provencher, all of Lantana, Fla.; several grandchildren; two sisters, Theresa Caulton of Sheffield, England, and Lena Murray of Yorkshire, England; and several nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Wilfred Maltais, died in 1955.
The are no visiting hours.
A memorial Mass and burial will be celebrated in the spring. The Waters Funeral Home in Concord is in charge of the arrangements.
Florence B. Ekstrom, NEW LONDON

NEW LONDON - Florence B. Ekstrom, 97, of County Road, died Jan. 9 at the William P. Clough Extended Care Center.
She was born in Richmond, Va., the daughter, Harry and Lizzie (Kings) Briggs.
She lived in Norwich, Vt., for most of her life, before moving to Bittersweet in New London several years ago, and later to the William P. Clough Extended Care Center.
She was employed by Granite State Electric in Hanover as an office manager and also by the Baker Library in Hanover. After moving to this area, she worked at the Woodbine Cottage Christmas Shop in Sunapee for about 15 years.
She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New London, and a former member of the Norwich Grange.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin Ekstrom.
She is survived by a daughter, Anne Richards of Naples, Fla.; four grandchildren, Anne Pearson of Scottsdale, Ariz., Penny Pearson of Newbury, Ian Pearson of Lakewood, Colo., and Vicki Pearson of New London; three great-grandchildren; a niece and a nephew.
Spring graveside services will be held in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown, Mass.

Harold Smethurst, MEREDITH

MEREDITH - Harold Smethurst, 83, of Meredith Brick Manor, died yesterday at the Lakes Region General Hospital.
He was born in Malden, Mass., the son of William and Catherine (Ward) Smethhurst.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a ceramic tile distributor for William Smethhurst & Son.
He was a resident of East Alton for 49 years.
He was a member of Realty Lodge Masons, Boston.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor (McDonnell) Smethurst of Meredith and West Alton; two sons, Robert Smethurst of Wilmington, Mass., and Richard Smethurst of Duxbury, Mass.; a daughter E. Jeanne Brodmerkle of Sterling, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
There are no calling hours.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Geneva C. Clark, PENACOOK

PENACOOK - Geneva C. Clark, 84, formerly of Washington Street, died yesterday at Genesis Eldercare-Pleasant View Center after a long illness.
She was born in Lebanon, the daughter of George and Clara (LaPlante) Clark. She lived in the Penacook-Concord area for most of her life.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church.
She enjoyed various crafts and painting.
She was predeceased by her husband, Reginald Clark; and a brother, Oswald Bassett.
She is survived by three sons, Frank Clark of Concord, Reginald Clark of Penacook and Randolph Clark of Hillsboro; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Leona Tuttle of Connecticut.
Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Wendell J. Butt Funeral Home, 42 Washington St., Penacook.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church. The Rev. Tim Thibeault will be the celebrant. Interment services will be held after the Mass in Blossom Hill Cemetery, Concord.
Donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
