Dorothy Bryn

RAYMOND - Dorothy Andersen Bryn, 90, of Sesame Street, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at SunBridge Nursing Home, Exeter.

She was born July 14, 1913, in Cambridge, Mass., the daughter of the late Axel J. and Dagney (Hansen) Andersen, and was a longtime resident of Woburn moving to Raymond 18 years ago.

Mrs. Bryn was a homemaker.

She enjoyed cooking, sewing and was an avid Red Sox fan.

The widow of Harry Bryn, she is survived by one daughter and her husband, Bette and Jeffrey Patterson of Raymond; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.

Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Raymond.

Fred S. Gielar

PITTSBURG - Fred S. Gielar, 77, of Route 3, formerly of Newmarket, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, in Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital, Colebrook, after a brief illness.

He was born July 29, 1926, in Newmarket, the son of John A. and Mary A. (Polchlopek) Gielar. He lived most of his life in Newmarket and had resided in Concord and Hopkinton, retiring to Pittsburg in 1986.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Gielar was employed by Public Service Co. of New Hampshire for many years, beginning as a welder and retiring as a supervisor.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing golf.

He was a 19-year member of the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post No. 67 in Newmarket and a life endowment member of the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by one daughter and her husband, Nancy and David Eaton of Madbury; one son, John T. Gielar of Troy; five grandchildren; one brother, Louie Gielar of Newmarket; and one niece.

A funeral prayer service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. followed by an American Legion Service in the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Rifle Association, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA 22030.

Caroline R. Goss

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - Caroline R. (Eaton) Goss, 90, of 77 High Street, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Brigham Manor Nursing Home in Newburyport.

She was born Aug. 23, 1912, in Seabrook the daughter of the late Byron and Carrie (Foote) Goss.

Mrs. Goss was a 1929 graduate of Newburyport High School.

The widow of Raymond Perley Goss, who died in 1968, she is survived by two sons and their wives, Byron P.and Elizabeth Goss of Newburyport and John A. and Deborah Goss of Amesbury; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Hollis and Elmer Eaton, both of Seabrook and Eddie Eaton of Tamworth; two sisters, Velma Eaton and Ellie Moore both of Seabrook; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Mary Louise Quill, who died in 1993, and one brother and sister, Emery Eaton and Alberta Bernier.

A graveside service was held Tuesdayin Wildwood Cemetery, Seabrook.

Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 40 Water St., or to the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements were by the Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Funeral Home, Newburyport.

Chester W. LeGacy

NORTH HAMPTON - Chester W. "Chet" LeGacy, 84, of 23 Stevens Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, in Catholic Medical Center, Manchester.

He was born Aug. 26, 1918, in Haverhill, Mass., the son of the late Chester W. and Millie (Surette) LeGacy. He was raised in Haverhill and had resided in Exeter before moving to North Hampton.

He was a 1937 graduate of Exeter High School and of McIntosh Business College in Haverhill.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. LeGacy retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1974 as an engineering technician in the design division with 34 years of service. He began his career as an apprentice coppersmith and worked his way up to journeyman before working in design.

He was a communicant of St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, woodworking and reading, especially biographies and history books.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rachel (Munroe) LeGacy; one son and his wife, William A. and Laura LeGacy of Lee; one daughter, Jayne V. Cotton of Lee; and four grandchildren.

There are no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Theresa Church. Burial will follow in Center Cemetery, North Hampton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cardiac Medical Unit, Catholic Medical Center, 100 McGregor St., Manchester, NH 031002-3770.

Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Robert G. Stevens

NEWMARKET - Robert G. Stevens, 76, of South Main Street, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, in Exeter Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was born Sept. 15, 1926, in Exeter, the son of John A. and Doris A. (James) Stevens and was a lifelong resident of Newmarket.

He was a 1944 graduate of Newmarket High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Stevens was a self employed painter in the area.

He was a member of Newmarket Community Church; a 53-year member of the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post No. 67 in Newmarket; a 50-year member and past master of Rising Star Lodge No. 47 F&AM in Newmarket; a member of Orphan Council, Belknap Council of Dover; Valley of Portsmouth; and N.H. Consistory, Valley of Nashua.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth (Jennings) Stevens of Newmarket; two daughters and their husbands, Donna I. and Wayne Redfern of Milton and Joyce S. and Ted Sharples of Hampton; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marguerite Philbrick of Niskayuna, N.Y., and Pauline Whittier of Manchester; three aunts, Doris George, Augusta Hodgdon and Marion Creighton; and several nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held in Riverside Cemetery, Newmarket, at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the N.H. Lung Association, 9 Cedarwood Drive, Unit 12, Bedford, NH 03110 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements were by the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, Newmarket.

Harold L. Bernardini

JOSHUA TREE, Calif. - Harold Laurence "Bernie" Bernardini, 64, died May 17, 2003, after a lengthy and courageous battle with diabetes.

He was born Sept. 4, 1938, in Bucksport, Maine, the son of Renie Bailey and Laurence Bernardini.

He was a 1956 graduate of Epping High School where he was a basketball star.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in Abilene, Tex., and Zaragoza, Spain.

Mr. Bernardini was an electrician at the University of New Hampshire for six years. He continued his career as an electrician for 24 years at Pease Air Force Base, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the Bangor Shipyard, in Washington, at King’s Bay, in St. Mary’s, Georgia, and at Adak Naval Station, Adak, Alaska. He was recognized many times for his outstanding work ethic.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, bowling, fishing and softball and won many athletic awards throughout his lifetime.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Louella (Landers) Bernardini of Joshua Tree; one son, Dale Bernardini of Beaverton, Ore.; one daughter, Deborah Bernardini of Joshua Tree; three grandchildren; and his siblings, Norman Bernardini of Brandenton, Fla., Thelma Lafferty of Bucksport, Clarence Bernardini of Winslow, Maine, Sylvia Sicard of Rochester, Richard Hamel of Newburg, Maine, and Anna Hamel of Williamsburg, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one son, Butch, and an infant daughter, Louella.

Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m. in Epping Community Church. Burial will follow in Southside Cemetery, Nottingham.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Epping.

Evelyn J. Downing

RAYMOND - Evelyn J. Downing, 91, of 22 Old Manchester Road, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Rockingham County Nursing Home, Brentwood, after a period of failing health.

She was born Feb. 24, 1912, in Brockton, Mass., the daughter of the late Clifton S. and Maude (Williams) Jones and had resided in Raymond for more than 70 years.

Mrs. Downing was a shoe worker for Burke Shoe Co. in Raymond for several years.

She enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Archie Downing; five daughters, Vivian McGall of Auburn, Lorraine Bellemore of Derry, Gail Parenteau of Epping, and Claire MacIntosh and Paula Landry, both of Raymond; four sons, Stuart Downing of Raymond, James Downing of Nashua, William Downing of Easley, S.C., and Joseph Downing of Raymond; 21 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one son, Philip Downing.

Funeral services were held Monday in Raymond Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Bosse officiating. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Raymond.

Memorial donations my be made to the Rockingham County Nursing Home, 117 North Road, Brentwood, NH 03833.

Arrangements were by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Raymond.

James J. Burdick

SANBORNVILLE - James J. Burdick, 81, of Brackett Road, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, in Maine Medical Center, Portland, Maine.

He was born May 10, 1922, in Brattleboro, Vt., the son of the late Jesse H. and Rose M. (Flora) Burdick. He resided in Sanbornville for 32 years coming from Kensington and Lexington, Mass.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving with the 269th Police Corps division in the Pacific Theatre and in the liberation of the Philippines and was the recipient of two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.

Mr. Burdick was the liquor investigator for the state of New Hampshire Liquor Commission. He had previously served as the police chief of Kensington from 1956 until 1960; was employed by Claristat in Dover; worked for Raytheon Corp. as a draftsman and designed their logo; had worked at the Watertown Arsenal in Watertown, Mass.; served as a patrolman for the Lexington, Mass., Police Department and had served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Bellows Falls, Vt., from 1939 until 1942.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, snow skiing, woodworking, fly tying, playing horse shoes and especially enjoyed playing cribbage. He was a fan of the Red Sox, Bruins and Patriots.

Mr. Burdick was a 33rd degree Mason with Star in the Least Lodge No. 59 of Exeter; a member of Scottish Rite, Valley of Nashua and Portsmouth/Dover; Bektash Temple of Concord; the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7663 of Union; and a former Boy Scout Master in Kensington.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Elaine (Lovejoy) Burdick of Sanbornville; one son and his wife, Bruce and Susan Burdick of Newmarket; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Joy E. Dudley of Brentwood, Deborah and Greg Copeland of Arundel, Maine, Jennifer and Tim Powers of Lee and Vero Beach, Fla., and Tina L. Bonner of Durham; two stepsons, Richard A. Souza of Biddeford, Maine, and James W. Souza and his wife Dorothy of Sanbornville; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one niece and two nephews.

He was predeceased by one sister, Rose Blanchard.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday in St. Anthony Church, Sanbornville, with the Rev. Edmund A. Babicz as celebrant.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 360 Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

Arrangements were by the C.E. Peaslee & Son Funeral Home, Sanbornville.
