Augusta Wonderling Burk

CERRO GORDO, N.C. - Augusta Wonderling Burk, 88, a former Curtis resident, died March 6, 2001, at her son's home in Cerro Gordo, N.C.

She was born Jan. 21, 1913, to William H. and Wilhelmina L. Korte Seide in Frontier County.

Mrs. Burk is survived by a daughter, Betty Wicklund of Cedar Falls, Iowa; two sons, Richard G. Bartrop of Cerro Gordo and Charles D. Bartrop of Harlingen, Texas; a brother, John Seide of Tucson, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the North Platte Cemetery.

There will be no visitation or viewing.

Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte is in charge of local arrangements.

Stanley R. Danekas

Stanley R. Danekas, 91, died March 6, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He was born May 18, 1909, to Fred and Wilhelmina Tavis Danekas at the family home near Milford in Seward County. He attended country school through the eighth grade in Seward County and graduated from Milford High School in 1925. He was active in all sports and especially 4-H. He was particularly proud of his 4-H experience. In 1924, he won the Livestock Judging Contest. He also won the state competition and went on to the national contest and won individual honors from the Chicago Livestock Exchange. As a result of his success at the Chicago National Livestock Exposition, he won top individual honors, for which he received the Chicago Stockyard Scholarship to the University of Nebraska. After finishing school, he farmed and fed and bought cattle and hogs until 1935. About 1930, he started buying cattle in the Sandhills, which got him started in the ranching business.

On Jan. 18, 1936, he married Florence Beguin in Chadron. In 1937, they bought a ranch north of Thedford, and lived there all their lives. His wife continued to teach after they were married and he worked the ranch.

He was a member of the Evangelical Church near Milford and transferred his membership to the Thedford United Church of Christ. He was active in all Masonic bodies, including the Demolet.

He was a past Master of Seneca Lodge, and past patron of Eastern Star. He was a Knight Templar, a 33rd degree mason and a member of the Tehama Shrine of Hastings, and the North Platte and Sandhills Shrine Clubs. He was also active in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of Broken Bow, Lodge No. 1688 and served as Exalted Ruler. He served as state president of the Elks, as Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of the Grand Lodge and was voted honorary life member of the Order of Does.

Though they had no children of their own, they cared about children and would provide a place for many youngsters to go for a summer job or for some tender loving discipline and encouragement. That was how he and Bill Elliott first became involved together. They became very close and worked together for many years on the ranch. Bill remains on the ranch to this day.

Mr. Danekas was an excellent shot with a shotgun and took up the sport of trap shooting in 1925. He attended many trap shooting events. He and his wife traveled around the country to different shoots. He won a position on the International Shooters Union at the Olympics in 1958, which were held in Moscow, Russia. At the end of the 1993 season, he had shot 552,100 sixteen-yard targets. He was a life member of the Amateur Trap Shooting Association as well as a life member of Nebraska State Sports Association, having served nine years as a director and three terms as state president. He was elected in the Nebraska Trap Shooters Hall of Fame.

As a young man, he contracted polio and Malta Fever, which caused him discomfort and problems in his hip for years. He served as an officer in every organization he belonged to. He was Cherry County Commissioner for seven years and served as chairman of the county board for three years. He was also a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. He was particularly active in charitable work for the organizations that he was a member of. He was particularly interested in helping crippled children through the Shriners.

He is survived by nieces; nephews; sisters-in-law and many, many friends.

Memorials are suggested to the Thomas and Cherry County Libraries.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1997, his parents; his sisters; and a brother.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Thedford United Church of Christ with the Rev. Linda Martin officiating. The body will be cremated after the service.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte and from 11:30 a.m. to service time Monday at the church.

Mary Frances Easton

Mary Frances Easton, 80, of North Platte died March 7, 2001.

She was born Oct. 26, 1920, near Sumner to George W. and Grace Gilbert Shepardson. She grew up on a farm between Sumner and Lexington, and attended country school near Sumner and Lexington, graduating from Lexington High School in 1939. Following graduation she moved to North Platte where she worked for the Sixth Street Food Stores and Hansen and Fuenning Accountants.

She married March Harry Easton, and they lived in Cheyenne, Wyo., where she worked at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens, now known as Wiederspahn-Radonsky Chapel. In 1972, her husband preceded her in death. In 1978, she moved to North Platte and worked for Hansen and Fuenning Accountants until 1994, when she retired.

She loved to garden, read, raise houseplants and bring home treasures from auctions.

Mrs. Easton is survived by a daughter, Ronna Rea Easton of Denver; a son, March Easton II of Texas; a granddaughter, Rachel Rea (Chad) Pinger-Easton of Lincoln; a great-granddaughter, Kiwi Rea Pinger-Easton; two sisters, Frances Grace Warner of Lexington and Marjorie Hurley of South Sioux City; a sister-in-law, Margaret D. Easton of North Platte; a brother-in-law, Carl Engelbrecht of Twin Falls, Idaho; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Marion "Mike" and Stephen Adams.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, Colon Research.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Dan Cosson officiating. The casket will be closed. Burial will be in the Sumner Cemetery.

Register book signing will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

George R. Marquardt

George R. Marquardt, 67, of Gothenburg died March 7, 2001, at University Hospital in Omaha.

He was born June 23, 1933, south of Elwood to Arnold Ewald and Alvina Elizabeth Hermes Marquardt. He was confirmed near Arapahoe at the Immanuel Lutheran Church May 25, 1947. He attended school at Elwood and served in the U.S. Army from June 1953 until May 1955.

On Dec. 2, 1955, he married LaVona Langenberg at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington. They moved to Lexington in 1958, and he worked at various jobs including Prasch's IGA, Howell Lumber Co., Burr Tire Co., Sperry New Holland, Salem Brothers and Valley Vending in Cozad. His wife preceded him in death July 28, 1990.

On Nov. 14, 1992, he married Betty Pelzer at the Evangelical Free Church in Gothenburg.

Mr. Marquardt is survived by his wife, Betty; four daughters, Teresa (Kevin) Wood and Loretta Keeton, all of Columbus, Linda (Lloyd) Hollibaugh of Wilber and Beverly (Rick) Holloway of Lexington; three stepdaughters, Cindy (Don) Gamblin of Chapman, Barbara ( Jeff) Scholting of Springfield and Marci (Mike) Johnson of Gothenburg; two stepsons, Ed (Khris) and Les (Darla) Pelzer, all of Gothenburg; his father and mother-in-law, John and Ester Selders of Gothenburg; five in-laws, Marian Marquardt of Julesburg, Colo., Arlene Dillon of Kearney, Shirley Langenberg of Bertrand, Mary (Bruce) Walker of Falls City, Iowa, and Jonda (Dean) Jones of Fallen, Nev.; 23 grandchildren, Kelly (Jason) Meridith, Brandy Wood, Casey, Crystal and Shon Jasnoch, Justin Keeton, Jim and Ashley O'Donnell, Mindy and Tiffany Hollibaugh, Kelly and Gina Holloway, Kristi, Scott, Melissa and Rebecca Gamblin, Aaron, Seth and Luke Pelzer and Brandon, Trevor and Ethan Scholting; and two great-grandchildren, Dezmin Meridith and Christian Holloway.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Frieda; and two brothers, Gerald and Ralph.

Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Health System Organ and Tissue Donations or to the Trinity Lutheran Church of Lexington.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington with the Revs. Ralph Guetersloh and Richard Borning officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.

Katherine V. Moore

Katherine V. Moore, 90, of North Platte died March 4, 2001, at the Shepherd Valley Care Center.

She was born Sept. 30, 1910, in Hayes County to Abner and Kate Moore. She graduated from Sutherland High School in 1929.

In 1931, she married Harry Moore. She operated a beauty shop in Sutherland. She had lived in North Platte since 1977.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Sutherland and was the social director at the Pawnee Hotel Retirement Community. She enjoyed square dancing, rockhound and fishing.

She also liked playing the piano, guitar and accordion.

Mrs. Moore is survived by a son, Kelly (Susan) Moore of Casper, Wyo.; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976; her parents; three sisters; and three brothers.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell with the Rev. Dr. John Kilgore officiating. The body was cremated.

Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and Crematory of Casper is in charge.

Gertrude Mosel

GRANT - Gertrude Mosel, 91, of Grant died March 7, 2001, at the Perkins County Community Hospital in Grant.

She was born Feb. 1, 1910, north of Grant to Emil and Mattie Nigh Pankonin. She attended rural and parochial school before graduating from Perkins County High School in 1927.

On Nov. 10, 1934, she married Carl Mosel in Amherst, Colo. They lived on various farms in Perkins county. Her husband preceded her in death in 1971, and she moved into Grant in 1974.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, the ABC Extension Club and was a 4-H leader.

Mrs. Mosel is survived by a daughter, Loneta (Merril) Olvey of Alliance; a son, Larry (Karen) of rural Ogallala; two sisters, Edith (Reinhold) Gloy of Wauneta and Laura Uehling of Grant; a sister-in-law, Doris Pankonin of Grant; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a sister; and four brothers.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church north of Grant with the Rev. Robert Pierce officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant is in charge.

E. Lura Rose

FRIEND - E. Lura Rose, 87, of Friend, formerly of Dorchester, grandmother of Rebecca and Patrick Hartling and aunt of Wayne Wickenkamp, all of North Platte, died March 8, 2001, at the Friend Manor.

She was born Feb. 28, 1914, to Sam and Alice Artz Miller in Seward County. She graduated from Dorchester Public Schools in 1931.

On Dec. 30, 1932, she married Verne William Rose. They lived in rural Dorchester, moving into Dorchester in the late 1030's. In 1957, she opened a ceramic shop and also decorated cakes. She enjoyed china painting and making jewelry as well as needle work, quilting, raising flowers and cooking.

She was a longtime member of the Dorchester United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Women's Club.

Mrs. Rose is survived by a son-in-law, Max Hartling of Dorchester; two grandchildren, Rebecca Hartling and Patrick Hartling, both of North Platte; a niece, Marilyn (Gene) Rhynalds of Denver; a nephew, Wayne Wickenkamp of North Platte; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1964; a daughter, Sharon Hartling; a son, Sammy Dean; and her parents.

Memorials are suggested to the Warren Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church n Dorchester with the Rev. Patricia Kelly officiating. Burial will be in the Dorchester Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Lauber-Moore Funeral Home in Friend and for an hour before the service Monday at the church.

Edith Margaret Bonde Ross

GOTHENBURG - Edith Margaret Bonde Ross, 86, of Gothenburg died March 7, 2001, at Linden Court in North Platte.

She was born July 31, 1914, to Chris and Johanna Morgensen Bonde on Stop Table. She graduated from Callaway High School and taught rural country school.

On May 26, 1937, she married Harold E. Ross.

She was a member of the Morning Star Methodist Church for more than 50 years, transferring her membership to Gothenburg Methodist Church. She enjoyed needlework, quilting and fishing.

Mrs. Ross is survived by her husband of North Platte; two daughters, Jeanette (Glen) Wiens of Ayr and Eileen (Bob) Griffiths of Seal Beach, Calif.; two sons, Larry (Ruth) of Arnold and Clifton (Travi) of Seal Beach; three sisters, Addie Waldron, Alice (Leon) Riggs and Florence (Burt) Fochtman, all of NorthPlatte; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane; her parents; a sister, Anna; and three brothers, Oscar, Henry and George.

Memorials are suggested to the Callaway Methodist Church or the Morning Star Methodist Church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Callaway with the Rev. Lincoln B. Justice officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Callaway.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Arnold Funeral Home and from noon until service time Saturday at the church.
