Dale J. Fox

BERTRAND - Dale John Fox, 73, of Bertrand, father of Linda Drews and grandfather of Dalton Paul Drews, both of Paxton, died Feb. 18, 2001, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege.

He was born Sept. 5, 1927, to William and Mathilda Hanson Fox. He graduated from Smithfield High School in 1945 and went to work for the Smithfield Grain Elevator. He served in the U.S. Army from Oct. 18, 1950, to Oct. 8, 1956. While in the service he was stationed in Germany.

On Sept. 28, 1957, he married Velma Schulz at North Platte. In 1972, he began farming on the family farm, retiring in 1994. He had also been employed by the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District from Jan. 27, 1969, to Sept. 1, 1992.

Mr. Fox is survived by his wife; a daughter, Linda (Doug) Drews of Paxton; a grandson, Dalton Paul Drews of Paxton; a sister-in-law, Donna (Bob) Henry of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; a brother, Frances (Mary) Fox of Smithfield; a brother-in-law, Donald (Dot) Schulz of Kearney; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Bernard and James, and James' wife, Ardyth.

A memorial has been established.

Rosary will be recited before the services at 9 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Holdrege.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Stephen Cooney officiating. Inunrment will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell at a later date.

There will be no visitation. Nelson-Harris Funeral Home in Holdrege is in charge.

Ruth McNeal

GOTHENBURG - Ruth McNeal, 95, of Central City, formerly of Gothenburg, died Feb. 17, 2001, at Litzenberg Memorial Hospital Long Term in Central City.

She was born Dec. 21, 1905, near Cozad to William and Alma Andersen Love. She graduated from Cozad High School in 1926.

In March 1930, she married Warren McNeal. They rented a farm four miles east of Gothenburg and lived there 13 years, until they bought their own farm eight miles southwest of Gothenburg. They lived there until her husband's death March 4, 1987.

She moved to an apartment in Fort Collins, Colo., to be near her daughter, and then moved in with her daughter. As her health declined, she was placed in a nursing home in Kansas City, where her granddaughter could watch over her care.

In April 2000, she was moved to the Long Term Care at Litzenberg Hospital in Central City to be near her son.

She was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church since 1943. She enjoyed all the activities of church and was a devoted homemaker.

Mrs. McNeal is survived by a daughter, Majorie (Melvin) Seek of Fort Collins; two sons, Harvey (Lola) of Clarks and Ronald (Beverly) of Omaha; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Icel, Marjorie, Vivian and her twin sister, Gladys; and two brothers, Everett and Howard.

Memorials are suggested to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg with the Rev. Larry Milliken officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.

Evelyn L. "Sues" Queale

Evelyn L. "Sues" Queale, 86, of North Platte died Feb. 17, 2001, at BryanLGH East in Lincoln.

She was born Jan. 22, 1915, to Clarence A. and Frances K. Pollat McLellan at Gothenburg. She moved to North Platte at age 8 and attended North Platte schools.

On Oct. 28, 1941, she married Robert "Red" Queale in North Platte. He preceded her in death Sept. 30, 1997.

She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church for 75 years, the American Legion Auxiliary 163, and an honorary member of the Union Pacific Old Timers. She worked for Model Cleaners, Valentine's Gift Shop and the Brown McDonald Store. During World War II, she was employed with the Barkalow Co. in the Union Pacific Depot. In her later years, she gave a helping hand at Valley View Nursing Home, entertaining the residents with records and music.

Mrs. Queala is survived by two nieces, Marianne Mills and Patricia Thomlison, both of Springfield, Mo.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Murney.

Memorials are suggested to the Goodfellow Shoe Fund, the North Platte Animal Shelter or the donor's choice.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Adams & Swanson Chapel with the Rev. David Lux officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

Stella Mary Shetterly

Stella Mary Shetterly, 81, of North Platte died Feb. 19, 2001, at the Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte,

She was born July 16, 1919, in Dayton, Ohio, to John Paul and Rosa Chmiel Bernat. She grew up in Dayton and attended St. Adalbert Academy.

On July 20, 1938, she married Lawrence T. Flagle in Zanesville, Ohio. They lived in Akron, Ohio. Her husband died in 1946.

On Jan. 4, 1947, she married Earl Shetterly in Dayton. They moved to North Platte Jan. 7, 1947. Her husband preceded her in death in July 1968. She worked for Linden Manor and Great Plains Regional Medical Center for many years. She played Mrs. Santa Claus, Crickett the Clown and Rabbit for the hospitals, nursing homes and schools. She started putting blue ribbons out for peace for the Solidarity Movement in Poland. She was active in Parents Counsel for Handicapped Children in 1948 and with the Little People of America. She also worked for the Easter Seal Society several years ago.

In 1990, she was nominated First Lady of the Year by Beta Sigma Phi and in 1991 received the Outstanding Citizen Award from Woodmen of the World. In 1992, she received the Woman of Achievement Volunteer Award from the North Platte Chamber of Commerce and was the 1993 Outstanding National School Volunteer from the National Association of Partners in Education.

She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of the Parent-Teacher Association.

Mrs. Shetterly is survived by a daughter, Shirley Flagle of North Platte; a son, Lawrence (Evelyn) Flagle of North Platte; a sister, Rose Mary Wanamaker of Kettering, Ohio; and two grandsons, Tom and Mike Flagle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Julia Blaho; and a brother, Louis Bernat.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for her daughter's care.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in North Platte with the Rev. Marion VonRentzell officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Wednesday at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte and before services Thursday at the church.

Howard Gilliland

CURTIS - Howard Gilliland of McCook, formerly of Curtis, died Feb. 19, 2001, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook. He was 78.

He was born March 17, 1922, in Frontier County south of Curtis to Harry and Blanche Mabel Nichols Gilliland.

On Nov. 7, 1942, he married Ardis Nutt at the Methodist Church in Curtis. He was a farmer and rancher south of Curtis for many years. The ranch has been in the family for more than 100 years.

Mr. Gilliland was an accomplished horse trainer and breeder. He rodeoed until the last few years and was known widely for his roping ability. He was a member of the National Old Timers Rodeo Association, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, McCook-Curtis Roping Club and a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook. He had lived in McCook the past 18 months.

Surviving him is his daughter, Connie (Andy) Bowman of Kearney, Charlene (Lee) Malm of Pine Bluff, Wyo., and Darla (David) Ruppert of McCook; two sons, Ron (Kay) of Curtis and Rod (Darlene) of Smithfield; a sister, Neva Stuckey of Centerville, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Curtis with the Rev. Shirley Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in the Curtis Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Friday at Blase Wetzel Funeral Home in Curtis.

Natalia Cabrera Reyes Lara

SHIDLER, Okla. - Natalia Cabrera Reyes Lara of Shidler, Okla., a former Hershey resident, died Feb. 14, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita, Kan. She was 76.

She was born, Dec. 29, 1928, at Winfield, Kan., to Bidel and Emilia Cabrera.

Survivors include her husband, John Lara of Shidler; a daughter, Loretta Walls of Ponca City, Okla.; a son, John L. (Bonnie) Reyes of Winfield; 11 sisters; four brothers; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by a son, Benedict Reyes, her parents and a brother, Savino Cabrera.

Services were Feb. 17, 2001, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Shidler with the Rev. Leonard Higgins as celebrant. Burial was in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery in Ponca City.

Grace Memorial Chapel in Ponca City was in charge.

Walter R. Mettin Jr.

Walter R. Mettin Jr., 73, a lifelong resident of North Platte, died Feb. 20, 2001, at University Hospital in Omaha.

He was born July 15, 1927, at North Platte to Walter R. Sr. and Caryl Derryberry Mettin. In 1945, he graduated from North Platte High School. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy from June 1945 to July 1946. After his discharge, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, nine years as a fireman and 35 years as an engineer, until his retirement on Jan. 1, 1990.

Mr. Mettin's hobbies were model trains, remote-control airplanes and Model-T Fords, art, dancing and working with horses.

He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1504, P.R. Halligan American Legion Post 163, Eagles Aerie 2839 and Tehama Temple of the Shrine. He was a loving father and grandfather.

Surviving him is a daughter, Laura (Robert) Holsten of Parker, Colo.; a son, Kyle (Deborah) of Omaha; a sister, Marilyn Barfoot of Lincoln; five grandchildren, Eric and Mary Kay Holsten, and Jessica, Kristen and Rachel Mettin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Amy, and his parents.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Nathan Wadewitz officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel.

Robert 'Bob' Sill

LEXINGTON - Robert "Bob" Sill, 83, of Lexington died Feb. 21, 2001, at the Cozad hospital.

He was born March 14, 1917, southwest of Eustis to James and Effie Cole Sill. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1934.

He was involved in the Sill Brothers Trucking business until his induction in the U.S. Army in 1942. While in the Army, he served in the Aleutian Islands and was awarded the Bronze Star, Pacific Campaign, American Campaign and Good Conduct medals.

On Sept. 17, 1941, he married Thelma Mueller of Elwood. They were involved in farming and specific-pathogen-free swine breeding stock production near Johnson Lake. In 1949, they moved to a farm north of Lexington.

Following his retirement in 1981, the couple enjoyed traveling in their motor home throughout the United States. In retirement, he was an agent for Hogemeyer Seed.

Mr. Sill was an avid golfer and a member of the Cozad Country Club. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, was active in the Farmer's Co-op Dehy Association and with a pork producer's association. He enjoyed time at the Grand Generation Centers at Lexington and Cozad.

Survivors include a daughter, Luann (Kurt) McBride of Cozad; a son, Steven (Lynn) of Wisner; a brother, Joe (Helen) of Lexington; and six grandchildren, Brittany Sill, Adam, Austin and Sarah Pedersen and Brian and Adam McBride.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1994; a sister, Helen Jensen; and a brother, Ray.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Cozad with the Rev. Debra Tompsett-Welch officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.

Barbara True

OCONTO - Barbara Phyllis True, 73, died Feb. 21, 2001, at her home near Oconto.

She was born Feb. 18, 1928, at Wallace, S.D., to Fredrick and Ida Martchance Jackson. She grew up in South Dakota, graduating from high school at Watertown, S.D., in 1946.

On Sept. 7, 1947, she married Kenneth E. True at Watertown. They farmed in the Watertown area, and near Longmont, Colo., for 26 years, and at Oconto.

Mrs. True was baptized in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Florence, S.D. She enjoyed flowers, putting puzzles together and traveling. She enjoyed sewing and usually made all of her own clothing.

Survivors include her husband; a son, David of Ridgeway, Va.; a sister, Maxine Enderes of Mesa, Ariz.; a half-brother, Clinton Parliment of Sioux Falls, S.D.; five nieces; and six nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ruth Lynch; two nephews; and a great-nephew.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Fund.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Dale Coates officiating. Burial will be in the Oconto Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
