Carl H. Thompson
HERSHEY — Carl H. Thompson, 84, of Hershey died Feb. 9, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.
He was born Sept. 1, 1916, to John and Mary Buckley Thompson at Luray, Mo. He grew up in the Luray and Kahoka, Mo., areas. He attended school in Fort Madison, Iowa.
On July 17, 1946, he married Anastacia A. Hahn in North Platte. They farmed in the Paxton area for a time before moving south of Hershey to the family farm. There he farmed and ranched for more than 50 years.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed carpentry work.
Mr. Thompson is survived by two daughters, Lorri (Tom) Jensen of Grand Island and Anita D. Cook of Hershey; a son-in-law, Gilbert Hernandez of Hershey; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Kathleen Thompson of Kahoka.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Kathleen Hernandez; his parents; two sisters, Lucille and Mildred; and two brothers, John and Ed.
Memorials are suggested to the Hershey Rescue Unit or to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
Christian wake services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Adams & Swanson Chapel.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with the Rev. James Janovec as officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today and Sunday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.
Carlotta Cooper
GRANT — Carlotta Cooper, 79, of Grant died Feb. 9, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney following heart surgery last week.
She was born June 20, 1921, to Charles and Mary Halligan Carroll at Atkinson. She grew up in Atkinson, Tamora and Shelby, where she graduated from high school in 1939. She attended the Lincoln School of Commerce, where she was trained to be a legal secretary.
On Nov. 26, 1942, she married Elmer Cooper in Lincoln. Her husband served in World War II, and after his discharge, they moved to Omaha for a brief time.
They moved to a farm southwest of Grant in 1948. They lived there until 1991, when they moved into Grant. She worked in the Perkins County judge’s office for 20 years and also was a legal secretary for various attorneys.
Mrs. Cooper is survived by her husband; two daughters, Carol (Don) Bernhardt of Billings, Mont., and Mary Jo (Randy) Gengenbach of rural Grant; a son, Jim (Linda Hoffman) of rural Grant; three grandsons; and a great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Charles.
Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. today at the Grant Mother of Sorrow Church.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Joe Stelle officiating. Burial will be in the Grant Cemetery .

Violet Roselyn Groseth
Violet Roselyn Groseth, 80, of North Platte died Feb. 9, 2001, at Linden Court in North Platte.
She was born Sept. 4, 1920, at Hardscrabble Township, Williams County, N.D., to Ernest and Dinnia Cular Scott. She grew up in Williams County and graduated from Williston (North Dakota) High School.
On Sept. 21, 1941, she married Clarence Miles Groseth at Glasgow, Mont., and they made their home in Trenton, N.D. They farmed at Trenton and were 4-H leaders until they moved to Williston in 1964. She then worked at the F. W. Woolworth store in Williston as a bookkeeper until her retirement. In 1994, they moved to North Platte.
She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Birthday Club in Williston. She enjoyed quilting. She also enjoyed crocheting, embroidery and playing the organ.
Mrs. Groseth is survived by two sons, Miles (Meme) of North Platte and Daryl (Linda) of Poquoson, Va.; a sister, EvaRea Peterson of Culbertson, Mont.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and kind caregivers.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1999; a daughter, Wilma Jean Nickoloff; a sister, Ernestine Martin; and two brothers, Milo and Delmer Scott.
A memorial has been established.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte with the Rev. Marion Von Rentzell of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and before services Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte.
Miller C. ‘Bud’ Ickes
BELLA VISTA, Ark. — Miller C. “Bud” Ickes of Bella Vista, Ark., formerly of North Platte, father of Larry C. Stacy Sr. and grandfather of Larry Stacy Jr. and Lori Houser, all of North Platte, died Feb. 9, 2001, in Bates Medical Center in Bentonville, Ark.
He was born Aug. 7, 1922, in Junction City, Kan., to Miller C. Sr., and Anna Hausermann Ickes. He graduated from Junction City High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was a combat engineer. He retired after 41 years with the Union Pacific Railroad.
He was a member of the Union Pacific “Oldtimers,” the American Legion of North Platte, a lifetime member of the Natonal Rifle Association, and an early member of the Bella Vista Gun Club. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge 32 of North Platte. He enjoyed metal and woodworking, fishing and hunting. He was baptized in the First Methodist Church of Junction City in 1923.
Mr. Ickes is survived by his wife, Mildred; two sons, Richard J. Stacy of Kearney and Larry C. Stacy Sr. of North Platte; four grandchildren, Kimberly Conway of Arlington, Mark Stacy of Marston Mills, Mass., and Larry Stacy Jr. and Lori Houser, both of North Platte; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the donor’s choice.
Services will be at a later date in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Ickes home in Bella Vista.

Joshua N. Jones
Joshua Nelson Jones, 24, of Lincoln, a former resident of North Platte, died Feb. 8, 2001, at BryanLGH in Lincoln.
He was born Dec. 25, 1976, to Robert R. and Shirley Mae Walcott Jones at Grant. He lived in North Platte and attended Cody Elementary School, Adams Middle School and North Platte High School.
He played baseball from ages six to 15, and enjoyed fishing and camping. He was an avid Deion Sanders fan and enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys.
Mr. Jones is survived by a son, James Nelson Jones of Endicott, N.Y.; his mother of North Platte; a sister, Tammie of North Platte, his grandparents, Harris and Millie Ulmer of North Platte, and Robert and Ila Walcott of Wauneta; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father; and a cousin, Todd Meseraull.
Memorials are suggested to The Frontier House.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Nathan Wadewitz officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.
Carl O. Quinn
PAXTON — Carl O. Quinn, 44, of Paxton died Feb. 8, 2001, in Lincoln.
He was born Aug. 28, 1956, in Ogallala to Walter and Ruth Quinn. When he was a child, the family moved to Overton, where he attended school. In 1973, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Carson. While in the Army, he received his GED. In 1975, he was discharged from the Army and moved to Chadron to attend Chadron State College.
On Feb. 14, 1987, he married Lisa Underwood in Ogallala. In 1986, he worked for Ogallala Ready Mix and in 1989, he went to work for House of Bottles. In 1990, the family moved to Paxton, where he worked for Paxton Fertilizer. In 1993, he went to work for Cement Products in North Platte, and then for Anderson Sand and Gravel in Paxton.
He enjoyed small engine repair and golf.
Mr. Quinn is survived by his wife; one daughter, Felicia Quinn of Paxton; two sons, Brandon and Coby, both of Paxton; his mother-in-law, Penny Underwood of Morrill; a sister-in-law, Erica (Kevin) Brunckhardt of Etna, Wyo.; and a brother-in-law, Shane Underwood of Morrill.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill.
A memorial has been established.
Services will be 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at the Draucker Funeral Home in Ogallala with the Rev. Don Studley of the United Methodist Church in Paxton officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. CDT Tuesday in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at Draucker Funeral Home in Ogallala.
Kay Theobald
SALT LAKE CITY — Kay Theobald, 64, of Salt Lake City, formerly of North Platte, died Feb. 6, 2001, at her home.
She was born Sept. 23, 1936, to Clyde J. and Verda M. Clark Theobald at North Platte. She attended country school and graduated from Elsie High School in 1954. After attending Kearney State College, she worked as a legal secretary in North Platte. She moved to Salt Lake City in the early 1960s where she was employed by Beaslin, Nygaard, Coke & Vincent and later by Richard G. Waldron CPA for 37 years. She was part owner of Salon Ambiance LLC in Salt Lake City.
She was an expert seamstress and enjoyed reading and gardening.
She is survived by her son, Scott Theobald of Salt Lake City; a sister, Ila (Frank) Anderson of Mitchell; a brother, Gary Theobald of Madrid; two nieces; a nephew; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and grandparents, George and Mary Ellen Theobauld and Frank and Vida Clark.
A memorial service will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 E. 1300 So. in Salt Lake City.
Doris Fern Andersen
CURTIS — Doris Fern Andersen, 77, of Curtis died Feb. 12, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.
She was born Aug. 18, 1923, at Grand Island to William Jasper and Fern Diller Gilliland. She grew up in Curtis and graduated from the Nebraska School of Agriculture in 1941. She went to Lincoln to study nursing for a year. She then returned to Curtis and was an operator for the telephone company.
On Aug. 31, 1947, she married Maurice Leon “Skeet” Andersen in Curtis at the Methodist Church. They farmed in the Curtis and Maywood areas.
She was a member of the Maywood United Methodist Church and the Maywood Methodist Women’s Group. She sang in the choir and quilted with the Maywood Methodist Quilters.
Mrs. Andersen is survived by a daughter, Delores (John) Brennemann of Hyannis; a son, Roger (Margaret) of Curtis; a sister, Eunice “Tiny” (Wayne “Andy”) Anderson of North Platte; two brothers, Wayne (Grace) Gilliland of San Antonio and Lowell (Joan) Gilliland of Madras, Ore.; four grandchildren, Bruce (Angela) and Brian (Sara) Brennemann, and Anna Lee and Ben Andersen; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Andrew; and other relatives.
Memorials are suggested to the Maywood United Methodist Church.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Revs. Martin Leeper and John Kilgore officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens in North Platte.
The casket will not be open at the church. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte.
Janette Jane Andre
COZAD — Janette Jane Andre, 63, of Cozad, formerly of Lexington, died Feb. 10, 2001, at the Southview Manor in Cozad.
She was born July 18, 1937, at Crofton to Leslie and Ruby Stoltnow Gutschow. She was raised in Lexington.
On Aug. 30, 1953, she married Kermit Story.
On Sept. 5, 1965, she married Gerald Andre. She worked at White Island Cafe, Ed and Vi’s Cafe, Parkway Cafe, Latter’s Dairy, Sixth Street Food Stores and later at the Leprechaun.
She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed being with her family. She also enjoyed crocheting, jigsaw puzzles and dancing.
Mrs. Andre is survived by two daughters, Roxanna (Chuck) Wobbema of Lexington and Rhonda (Myron) Handquist of Hordville; a son, Steven Story of Flippin, Ark.; a stepdaughter, Kim (Alan) Campbell of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; four sisters, Verna (Kenneth) Moritz, Virginia (Ed) Hanson and Donna (Ervin) Smock, all of Cozad, and her twin sister, Janice (Rex) Strickland of Lexington; two stepsisters, Beverly (Cecil) Wempen of Overton and Ruby Swartz of Atlanta; a brother, Don (FeNilda) Gutschow of Elwood; two stepbrothers, Dwayne (Jean) Rutledge of Gearhart, Ore., and Robert (Theresa) Rutledge of Florida; four grandchildren,; six stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather; a stepsister, Janet Henry; and a brother, Clayton.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, Parkinson’s disease research or the donor’s choice.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington with the Rev. Richard Boring officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington.

Walter Block
GOTHENBURG — Walter Block, 91, of Gothenburg died Feb. 12, 2001, at the Hilltop Estates nursing home.
He was born July 12, 1909, north of Cozad, to Martin U. and Alma Fickenscher Block. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christ Lutheran Church.
On Feb. 14, 1935, he married Alma Kuhlman at the Christ Lutheran Parsonage in Gothenburg. They lived and farmed south of Gothenburg until 1975, when they retired and moved into Gothenburg.
He was a member of the American Lutheran Church and served on Church Council and the Financial Committee when the American Lutheran Church was built.
He enjoyed his church, farming and his mechanical ability.
Mr. Block is survived by his wife; a daughter, Joleen (Daniel) Ireland of Bozeman, Mont.; two sons, Merle (Linda) and Keith (Judy), all of Gothenburg; six grandchildren, Julie (Matthew) Hinze of Nacogdoches, Texas, Dirk (Stephanie) Block of Omaha, Kelli (Jay) Heater of Omaha, Wendy Block of Lincoln, Malia Ireland of Minneapolis, Minn., and Darren Ireland of Bozeman; two sisters, Lillian Kuhlman of Gothenburg and Violet Henry of Callaway; two sisters-in-law, Signe Block and Rose Kulhman, both of Gothenburg; two brothers, Lawrence (Patricia) Block and Arnold (Marge) Block, all of Gothenburg; 10 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-granchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Clarence.
