Wayne Moist 1937-2004
Wayne Moist, 86, of Ovid, Colo. died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004 at the Miller Memorial Care Center in Chappell, Neb.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 23, 2004 at 10 a.m. in the Ovid United Methodist Church in Ovid with the Rev. Mark Marston officiating. Interment will be in the Chappell Cemetery in Chappell. Visitation will be on Sunday from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Holechek Funeral Home in Chappell.
Memorials may be made to the Ovid United Methodist Church.

Wayne Kieth Moist was born November 19, 1917 in rural Deuel County the youngest of three children to Grover C. and Silvia (Stalnaker) Moist. He was raised in Chappell where he graduated from the Chappell High School.
On September 8, 1937 Wayne was united in marriage to Florabelle Jacobson. They moved in a trailer house to the Lake McConaughy construction project and lived there for four years. Then later moving to various construction projects in Sutherland, Neb., Hasty, Colo., Gallup, N.M. where Robert was born in 1942, Wichita, Kan., Hastings, Neb. and California before returning to Chappell in 1943. They helped run Wayne’s parents Chappell Hatchery and in 1946 Connie was born. They moved to a farm eight miles south of Ovid and in 1948 Rose Anne was born. In 1950 they moved to the home Wayne built where he resided the rest of his life. They farmed the land and later purchased it in 1972, forming the Moist Farms Incorporated. The farmland is on the site of Fort Sedgwick and many souvenirs have been found, some of which are on display at the Sedgwick County Museum. Florabelle passed away on May 10, 1992.
Wayne was united in marriage to Mabel Hughes on September 3, 1992 in Colorado Springs. They enjoyed retirement together on the farm near Ovid.
He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife Mabel of Ovid; one son, Robert Moist and his wife Dorothy of Ovid; two daughters Connie Schiel and her husband Ronald of Chappell and Rose Anne Woodhams and her husband Leon of Ovid; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Florabelle; brothers Gerald and Doug, and his parents.
Arlene L. Sander 1923-2004
Arlene L. Sander, 81, of Lodgepole, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m on Monday, Feb. 23 at the Gehrig Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Memorials are to the family’s choice at P.O. Box 314 in Lodgepole.
Arlene Lucille (Stoppkotte) Sander was born Jan. 21, 1923 at Grand Island the daughter of Carl H. and Bertha (Birkholz) Stoppkotte. She was raised on a farm in Merrick County in the Grand Island area and was one of 10 children. She was married to Clifford L. Sander on Feb. 12, 1954 in Lincoln.
Arlene worked as a waitress for many years. She laughed easily and often, could talk to anyone and was a lot of fun to be with. She was an excellent seamstress and cook. She made beautiful clothes for her family and made the best fresh apple pie ever. Arlene also loved to have fun playing the slot machines in South Dakota. Christmas was her favorite holiday and she hosted many, many big family Christmases in Lodgepole at her home. She adored her grandchildren and always remembered everyone’s birthday year after year. She was a wonderful role model for how to be the best mom and grandma. Her family thinks that everyone should be so lucky. She will always be loved and remembered and so very, very missed.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Cliff of Lodgepole; one son Michael Sander of Lincoln; daughters, Linda DeCastro of Tucson, Ariz., Lana Speer and Christine Nelson both of Sidney; four grandsons, four granddaughters, three great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters.

Terri Wietfeld 1959-2004
Terri Wietfeld, 44, Leigh, Neb., died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb. A rosary was held Monday at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Leigh. A funeral will follow today at 1 p.m. also at the church with Father Mel Wiese officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery also in Leigh.
Visitation is today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church.

Terri Wietfeld was born June 16, 1959 in Sidney, the daughter of Lloyd Allen and Annette (Schnell) Juelfs. She attended school in Potter graduating from Potter High School in 1977. Terri attended college for two years in Torrington, Wyo., and spent a semester in Oklahoma and at Midland in Fremont, Neb. before graduating from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
She married Kenny Wietfeld on May 6, 1983 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Leigh.
After graduating from college, she was hired by Leigh Public Schools. Terri taught business and distance learning courses in addition to coaching volleyball and mock trial. She started the Relay for Life in the Leigh area. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Kenny of Leigh; four children, Matthew, Tessa and Jonathan, all of Leigh and Daniel of Norfolk, Neb.; mother, Annie Juelfs of Potter; sister, Jennifer and husband Kevin Thomas of Potter; brother, Lane and wife Donna Juelfs of Potter and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lloyd Juelfs; grandparents and aunts, Mary White and Joan Halley.
Dave Thies 1937-2004
Dave Thies, 66, of Sidney, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today in the United Methodist Church in Potter with Pastor Mary A. Frohs officiating. Inter-ment will be in the Potter Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church or to the Potter Volunteer Fire Department.

David Lee Thies was born September 11, 1937 in Kimball to August and Vivian (Hibbard) Thies. He was raised in Potter and graduated from Potter High School. He worked most of his life with his brother Elvin in a partnership owning and operating Thies Petroleum. During this time he also worked for U.P.S. outside mechanical service for 20 years. On September 14, 1985 he was united in marriage to Kathryn Touney in Reno, Nev. Following the death of Elvin in the late 1990’s the business was sold and he went to work for Walter Petroleum and then later for Farmers Elevator Coop until his death.
He was a member of the Potter United Methodist Church, the Potter Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years and member of the Masonic Lodge in Potter and later in Sidney. He was a Master Mason and later joined the Scottish Rite in Alliance. He also worked with the Boy Scouts for 10 years.
Survivors include his wife Kathy of Sidney; one son Michael Thies and his wife Tracy of Sidney; three daughters, Deb Forbes and her husband Don of Sterling, Colo., Cindy Stewart and her husband Lee of Sidney, and Tamara Beyer and her husband Joe of Sidney; two brothers, Don Thies and his wife Cynthia of Lewellen, Neb., Wayne Thies and his wife Beverly of Frankfort, Ind.; one sister Myrene King of Frankfort; one sister-in-law Darlene Thies of Potter; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Wilma Shoemaker, and his brother Elvin Thies.
Vern D. Thomas 1915-2004
Vern D. Thomas, of Sequim, Wash., formerly of Sidney, passed away on Feb. 14, 2004.
A memorial service was held on Feb. 24 at Dungeness Community Church in Sequim. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.
Private burial was held at Sequim View Cemetery with Sequim Valley Chapel in charge.
Vern was born May 22, 1915 to Dwight R. and Elizabeth Thomas in Overton, Neb. He graduated from Sidney High School and attended the University of Nebraska.
He moved to Seattle in 1940 and married Frances Hope Nailor on Feb. 14, 1942. He joined the Marine Coprs in 1943 and served in San Diego until the end of the war. Vern was a partner in Greer and Thomas Lumber from 1952 to 1965. At that time, he and Francis served as State Directors in the Lay Division for the Campus Crusade for Christ until Francis’ ill health caused them to resign. They then began Thomas Building Center in 1972 with son, Randall, in Sequim in 1972.
Vern was past president of the Seattle Lumberman’s Club and a 40-year member of the Western Building Materials Association. He was a Charter Member of the Sequim Kiwanis Club, past member of the Chamber of Commerce, Sequim Museum, and one of the founders of Dungeness Community Church.
Survivors include sons, Robert of Seattle and Randall and wife, Darlene of Sequim; three grandsons; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Fran, two brothers, Welix of Tacoma, Gerald of Seattle, and sister, Maxine Wilson of Sidney.
Vera Isley 1906-2004
Vera Isley, 97, of Lodgepole, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004 at the Miller Memorial Care Center in Chappell.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, in the Holechek Funeral Home in Chappell with the Rev. Harun Gatobu of the Lodgepole United Methodist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Lodgepole.
Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the Holechek Funeral Home in Chappell.
Memorials have been established to the Lodgepole United Methodist Church, the Pleasant View Cemetery or the Miller Memorial Care Center.
Vera Isley was born July 1, 1906 at Clay Center, Kan. She came to western Nebraska with her parents, Chris and Mary Wiegers in 1919 and had always lived in the Lodgepole and Goodview communities where she taught school for five years. In later years she was a resident of the Miller Memorial Care Center in Chappell.
On June 1, 1937 she was married to Harold Isley and lived on the same farm for 49 years in the Goodview community. She enjoyed doing things for her neighbors, making calls and remembering them with homemade goodies she loved to cook. She was active in many social affairs. She was a member of the Lodgepole United Methodist Church for nearly 75 years, was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Sunshine Club, the Order of the Eastern Star Past Matrons Club, the Shrine Auxiliary and her Pinochle Club for many years.
She is survived by one sister, Viola Wiegers of Chappell; nieces and nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Sandra Ann who was born June 26, 1944 and lived for only nine months, her husband, two sisters and three brothers.
Eileen Lucille (Dickinson) Harmon 1950-2004
Eileen Lucille (Dickinson) Harmon, 53, Iliff, Colo., died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004 in Sterling, Colo. Her funeral will be Friday, Feb. 27 at 9:30 a.m. at the Tennant Funeral Home in Sterling with Pastor Francis Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery in Champion, Neb.

Visitation is today from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Eileen was born March 13,1950 in Sidney, the daughter of Lenard and Darlene (Rowan) Dickinson. She attended school in Sunol.
Eileen married Raymond Harmon on July 4, 1988 in Haxtun, Colo.
She was employed as a cook at various restaurants in Sidney and Sterling. Eileen was also a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader and enjoyed crafts, fishing, camping and taking care of her dog, Buffy.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond Harmon of Iliff; father, Lenard Dickinson; sisters, Linda Noel and Faye MacKay, both of Sidney; step-daughters, Lilly Baum of Brighton, Colo. and Cindy Harmon of Kansas City, Mo.; step-son, Randy Harmon of Denver, Colo. and one grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Darlene Dickinson; sister, Connie Dickinson and an infant brother.
Thomas A. Christensen 1959-2004
Thomas A. Christensen, 44, Lincoln City, Ore., died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004 in Lincoln City as the result of a gun shot wound. Funeral services are pending. Bateman Funeral Home in Newport, Ore. is in charge of arrangements.
Thomas Christensen was born March 9, 1959 in Sidney, the son of Clyde and Arlene (Vogt) Christensen. He graduated from Siletz High School in Siletz, Ore. in 1978.
Thomas married Tina Mitchell in 1992.
He then married Lori Whitefoot in 1995.
Thomas worked with his father as a commercial and residential painter, and served in the Navy aboard the USS Niagara Falls.
Survivors include his parents, Arlene and Clyde Christensen of Sidney; son, Jonathan Christensen of Grant, Neb.; daughter, Kathryn Ann Christensen of Grand Island, Neb.; brother, Richard and wife Kim Christensen of Toledo, Ore. and grandparents Marie Huston of Sidney and Tony Christensen of Sedgwick, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Jeffrey Christensen; sister, Misty Christensen; aunt, Sandy Vogt and grandmothers, Christensen and Vogt.
