Howard Taylor Pritchard 1925-2002
Howard Taylor Pritchard, 76, Kensington, Md. an engineer who worked for the Navy Department for 24 years on the Seasparrow surface missile system project, died Jan. 23 at Suburban Hospital after a heart attack.
Howard was a native of Cleveland, Ohio who attended John Carroll University and graduated from Dayton University. He served in the Army during World War II.
Howard began his career as an electrical engineer at General Electric Company’s lamp department and later worked for is defense divisions.
He was also employed by ITT Federal, Martin-Marietta Corp., Vitro Laboratories and Booz-Allen Applied Research.
Howard was a scoutmaster and district commissioner with the Boy Scouts and a member of Toastmaster International.
He also taught religion classes at St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church in Wheaton and was a certified master gardener and former president of the Men’s Garden Club of Montgomery County.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Carol Ann Pritchard of Kensington; sons, David of Burke, Dr. Glenn of Germantown, Douglas of Olney and Brian Pritchard of Cumberland, Md.; sister, Carolyn, wife of Gordon R. Tobin of Sidney; and six grandchildren.
Robert A. Mitchell 1921-2002
Robert A. Mitchell, 80, a longtime Sidney resident, died on Sunday, February 3, at Memorial Health Center in Sidney. Visitation will be held at the Gehrig & Son Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The body will be cremated and there will be no services.
Bob Mitchell was born in Bronson, Neb. on April 4, 1921.
He was raised in Bronson and attended the Bronson schools.
He married Alice R. Marquez in Sidney. He worked for Far-mor Co-op as a truck driver until his retirement.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Penny Mitchell of Sidney; one brother and three sisters, four grandchildren and numerous friends.

Virginia (Englert) Stone 1916-2002
Virginia L. Stone, 86, Littleton, Colo., died Jan. 29 due to Alzheimer’s complications. Her funeral was Feb. 2 in Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary Chapel. Interment followed in Chapel Hill Cemetery.

Virginia was born Feb. 15, 1916 in Sunol, Neb., the daughter of Emil and Lily (Pavlat) Englert. She graduated from Sunol High School and attended beauty school in North Platte.
Virginia married Wray W. Stone in Sunol. She owned her own beauty shop and also was a receptionist for 32 years at Burt Chevrolet.
Virginia had a great interest in her brother’s boys and their families. She considered them her children, as she had none.
Survivors include her brother, Jack Englert, Sr. and sister-in-law, Elaine Englert of Englewood, Colo.; two nephews, Jack Englert, Jr. and Tim Englert of Littleton, Colo.; three great nephews and two great nieces.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Theodora Sarah Einspahr 1904-2002
Theodora Einspahr, 97, Sidney, died Saturday, Feb. 2 at Beverly Healthcare Center in Sidney. Her funeral will be Thursday, Feb. 7 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sidney with Pastor Bradley Heinecke officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney. Memorials have been established to the Lutheran Hour or the donor’s or family’s choice. Theodora Sarah Einspahr was born Dec. 10, 1904 in Ruma, Ill., the daughter of the Rev. Arthur W. and Agnes (Lehman) Wilk. She was baptized by her father on Christmas Day, 1904.
The family moved to Juniata, Neb., where Theodora received her elementary education at the Zion Lutheran School. She was confirmed by her father in the Zion Lutheran Church in Juniata, March 24, 1918. Theodora then attended Lutheran High School and Business College in Deshler, Neb. She went on to receive deaconess training in Beaver Dam, Wis.
On August 27, 1925, Theodora was united in marriage to Arthur Einspahr with the wedding being performed by her father. The couple farmed in Wanda Township, Juniata.
They moved to Holyoke, Colo. in 1939 and farmed there until 1969. Theodora was employed as a nurse at the Holyoke Hospital during that time. They also lived in El Paso, Texas, Denver, Colo., Natchitoches, La., and in Sidney, where they were residents of Beverly Healthcare Center.
She was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she attended faithfully until her failing health. Theodora had served as a Lutheran Sunday School teacher for over 25 years.
Survivors include three daughters, Lou Ann (Mrs. John) of Denver, Colo., Eldeen (Mrs. Rollin) Cattau of Houston, Texas and Gloria (Mrs. E. Jenner) Johnson of Natchitoches; one brother, William Wilk of Victorville, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Theodora was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Arthur; son, the Rev. Robert L. Einspahr; four brothers; two sisters and one great-granddaughter.
Jack Bryan Robinson
Jack Bryan Robinson, 67, a former Sioux Ordinance Depot resident, died Friday, Feb. 1 at his home in Greeley Colo.
Jack managed the bowling alley at Sioux for a time. He was an excellent bowler and the secretary of the Bowling League in Sidney. He also played basketball and softball, coaching his three sons in Little League for 10 years. Jack was a 1952 graduate of Sidney High School. He retired from the Air Force F&A Center, Lowry AFB, Aurora, Colo. as a Lead Programmer in 1980.
Jack married Caryl Kelley of Hastings, Neb. in 1957.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Elsie and brothers, Bill, Red and Butch.
Survivors include his wife; five children, Lynn Miner of Knoxville, Tenn., Tim of Greeley, Colo., Karen Westover of Broomfiled, Colo., Bruce K. of Englewood, Colo. and Jay of Kingman, Ariz.; sisters, Helen Nelson and Barbara Coogle, sister-in-law, Mary Smith Robinson of Sidney; cousin, Mary Ann Fehringer of Idaho and 13 grandchildren.
Bruce Alvard 1955-2002
Bruce Alvard, 46, died Wednesday, Jan. 30 at the Eben Ezer Care Center in Brush, Colo. A memorial service will be Monday, Feb. 4 at 10:30 a.m. at the Heer & Jolliffe Mortuary Chapel in Ft. Morgan, Colo. Heer & Jolliffe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial donations may be made in Bruce’s name to the Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center, 122 Hospital Road, Brush, CO 80723.
Bruce Alvard was born June 9, 1955 in Medford, Wis, the son of Robert and Shirley Alvard. He grew up in the New Raymer, Colo. area, graduating from Prairie High School.
He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1995.
Bruce was a true cowboy, being named Nebraska State Bullfighting Champion four years in a row. In addition to bullfighting, he enjoyed bull riding, breaking horses and horse shoeing. He worked for several ranches in Nebraska and Colorado.
Survivors include his daughter, TJ Dawn Alvard of Brush; step-daughter, Dusty Smith of Lone Tree, Colo.; sister, Ginger Clasen of Kayenta, Ariz.; one niece; two nephews and his parents, Robert and Shirley of Log Lane Village, Colo.
Lowell Smitherman 1935-2002
Lowell Smitherman was born July 24, 1935 in Tynerville, Ala. His four children are Donna (deceased), Robert, Tina and David.
He entered the Air Force in 1956 and retired in 1978. Lowell’s assignments were in many countries throughout the world. He worked as a teletype writer repairman and also taught.
After retiring from the Air Force he worked on teletype machines for various companies, had a food and pop vending machine business, worked as a nurses aide in nursing homes and threw papers for the Sidney Sun for approximately one year before retiring.
As a member of the Church of the Nazarene Lowell assisted his wife, Rita, in teaching third and fourth graders in Sunday School. He dressed as the Pharisee and told the story of the woman caught in sin. Even Pastor Suhr was present for the occasion. He also had a little car collection of 750 cars, which were displayed in the living room.
Over the past few years Lowell has been treated for lung disease because of his many years of smoking. For the past six months he was treated for cancer which ultimately caused his death.
Lowell leaves behind his wife, Rita, three children, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
May he rest in peace.
Virgil O. Wells 1921-2002
Virgil O. Wells, 80, a longtime Sidney resident died at Memorial Health Center in Sidney on Monday, Jan. 28. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 31, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sidney with Fr. Jim Novakowski officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. VFW Post #610, DAV Chapter #40, American Legion Post #17 and the Sidney Detachment of the Nebraska National Guard will preform military honors. A Christian wake service will be held today at 7 p.m. at St.Patrick’s. Friends can call at the funeral home today from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Memorials may be given to the family’s choice
Virgil Oscar Wells was born on February 21, 1921 in Geneva, Neb. the son of Albert and Freda Witkowski. Virgil enlisted in the Army on August 22, 1940 and served during WWII. He was married to Veronica VanNess on August 1, 1944 in Wilmington, NC. After they were married Veronica came to Sidney to live while Virgil was sent overseas. He was a squad leader of a rifle squad with the 155th Airborne Anti-Aircraft Regiment, 17th Airborne Division and was also a gliderman, serving on the Rhine and in Germany. He chose to lead patrols into enemy territory and disrupt enemy communications and obtain information. He fired the M-1 rifle and field stripped it to reduce stoppages and replace worn parts. He also served as an anti-tank gun crewman on a 57mm gun. He was honorably discharged from the Army on March 17, 1945. He went to work for the Sioux Army Depot in 1949. Then in 1965 Virgil was transferred to Texarkana, Texas to the Redriver Army Depot, he then retired in 1977 and returned to Sidney where they have made their home ever since. Virgil loved to take his great grandchildren and wife fishing, he enjoyed watching football and boxing and visiting with his friends at the coffee shops. His parents preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Veronica of Sidney; two sons and daughters-in-law, Virgil and Karen Wells of Lincoln and Jerry and Cindi Wells of Mesquite, Texas; one daughter, Kathleen Hill of Sidney; one brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Mary Wells of Twin Falls, Idaho; one sister and brother-in-law, Ione and Bill Faulkner of Lubbock, Texas; 9 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Dollie Dickson 1905-2002
Dollie Dickson, 96, Sterling, Colo. and a former area resident, died Friday, Jan. 25 in Sterling. Graveside services and burial were Monday in Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney. Gehrig & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are to the family’s choice.
Dollie Winters was the seventh of nine children born to Albert and Mary (Cole) Winters on April 8, 1905 in Ellis, Kan. When Dollie was four, the family moved by covered wagon to Cheyenne County, Colo. and homesteaded south of Arapahoe, Colo.
She was united in marriage to Irvin V. Dickson Feb. 25, 1927. To this union, one daughter, Della May, was born.
Dollie was preceded in death by her husband, two great-grandchildren, three sisters, and five brothers. At the age of 96, she was the last of her siblings to pass away.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Della and Don Krieger of Sidney; three grandchildren and their spouses; seven great-grandchildren; 21 great-great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Inez Winters and many nieces and nephews.
