Vincent Calahan/1927-2002
Vincent Calahan, 74, Sidney, died Feb. 26, 2002 at Memorial Health Center in Sidney.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Sat., March 2 at the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church in Sidney with the Rev. Bob Dahlgren officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery with military services by the American Legion Post #17, the DAV Chapter #40, the VFW Post #610 and Detachment 3, 1074th Truck Co.
Memorials have been established to the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
Cremation was held and there is no visitation at the funeral home.

Vincent Robert Calahan, the son of William Asa and Mabel G. (Glaze) Calahan was born Sept. 29, 1927 at McCook, Neb. He grew up in Wellfleet and North Platte. At the age of 17 with his parent’s permission, he entered the SeaBees during WWII, where he served in the Pacific Islands.
On February 8, 1948 he was united in marriage to Shirlee Farber at McCook. They lived in various places before moving to Sidney in 1957. He worked for what is now Conoco Pipeline for 35 years, retiring in September of 1992.
When he was younger he was involved in the JayCees. He was a member of the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and Deacon as well as serving as the church handyman.
Vincent was also a member of the VFW and the American Legion where he served as treasurer and participated with the color guard. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include his wife Shirlee Calahan; sons Dan and his wife Linda Calahan and Rick and his wife Mickie Calahan, all of Sidney; daughter Leslie Richards and her husband Randy of Sidney; son Jeff Calahan of Cheyenne, Wyo.; ten grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Don and Billie Calahan; one sister, Betty Backhaus and one niece Debbie Backhaus.
Thelma Mintken/1911-2002

Thelma Mintken, Sidney, died on her 91st birthday, Thursday morning, Feb. 28 at Memorial Health Center in Sidney.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Mar. 5 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sidney with Father Jim Novakowski officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. A Christian Wake service will be held at 7 p.m., Monday at the church.
Memorials have been established to the Memorial Health Center Hospice, the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church or the Sidney Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.
Thelma L. Mintken was born in Bloomfield, Neb. on Feb. 28, 1911, to Lilly (Freeburg) Zorn and Edward Zorn, Sr.
She attended school in Dalton, graduating from Dalton High School in 1929. Thelma also attended the University of Nebraska.
She married Lloyd Mintken on April 27, 1935 in Dalton, where the couple lived for several years before moving to Bushnell. In 1954, they moved to Sidney, where Thelma spent the remainder of her life.
She was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and was active in Surviving Spouses. Thelma’s interests were her family, traveling, Nebraska football and her yard.
Survivors include her daughters, Linda Markel and husband Dan of Lodgepole, Cheryl Cronk and husband Jerry of Bellevue, Neb. and Coleen Langdon and husband Jerry of Sidney; seven grandchildren, Tracey Bullock and husband Larry, Jeff Markel and wife Jill, Greg Markel and wife Misty, Heather Anselmo and husband Matt, Ryan Conk, J.J. Langdon and wife Kim and Josh Langdon; one brother, Ed Zorn, Jr. and wife Shirley of Pine Bluffs, Wyo. and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lloyd in 1986 and one brother, Glenn Zorn.
Carolyn Joyce Good 1942-2002
Carolyn Joyce Humphrey Good, 59, Austin, Texas, died Tuesday, Feb. 19. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held in Austin, Texas Sunday Feb. 24.
Memorials may be made in Carolyn’s name to the Diabetes Foundation.
Carolyn was born April 1, 1942 in Kearney, the daughter of Frederick Andrew and Blanche (Heinzman) Humphrey. Later that year the family moved to the Sioux Army Depot, 12 miles west of Sidney. She attended Brownson School, later at the depot and then Sidney High School, where she graduated in 1960. Carolyn took nurses’ training in Omaha, graduating with a licensed vocational nursing degree.
While in Omaha, she married her husband of 39 years, Terry Good. Being married to a career airman, Carolyn and her girls had the opportunity to travel around and enjoy seeing different parts of the world, especially Germany and Alaska. She returned to Sidney with her children while Terry served in the Vietnam War.
For the past 20 years, Carolyn and her family have lived in Austin. She was a homemaker and dedicated to both her family and to making a difference in many lives through her devotion of those she cared for in rest homes.
Survivors include her husband, Terry Good; daughters, Teresa Loney and husband Mark, Michelle Fabian and husband Lonnie Puttan and Lynda Good, all of Austin; brothers, Ronald Humphrey of Sidney, Fred Humphrey and wife Sheila of Denver, Colo., Mike Humphrey and wife Jackie of Hutchinson, Kan., Randy Humphrey and wife Wanda of Yukon, Okla.; one sister, Diana Bruns and husband Ray of Sidney; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Fayetta.

John W. Elwell 1931-2002
John W. Elwell, 70, a long-time Sidney businessman, died Sunday, Feb. 24 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, Colo. following a short illness. Cremation was held. Memorial services will be Monday, March 4 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Sidney with Rev. Alan Davis officiating. Inurnment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery with military graveside services by the American Legion Post #17, the DAV Chapter #40, the VFW Post #610 and Detachment 3, 1074th Truck Co. Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney is in charge of arrangements.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials have been established to the First United Methodist Church, the Ft. Sidney Colonels Scholarship Fund or the donor’s choice.
John Westover Elwell was born June 3, 1931 in Kimball, the son of John Alois and Hazel (Westover) Elwell. He attended school in Kimball until 1944 when his father became the Dodge dealer in Sidney. John graduated from Sidney High school in 1949 and then from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1953. While in college, he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and was designated as an outstanding senior in 1953.
John married Mildred Yeakley June 14, 1953 in Scottsbluff. In October of 1953, he entered officer candidate school for the U.S. Marine Corps. John became 2nd Lieutenant in December and he and Mildred lived in Arlington, Va. for six months. Another six-month tour of duty at Camp Pendleton, Calif. followed and then he spent a year in Korea, Japan and Okinawa. John was honorably discharged in December of 1955 and came to Sidney where he was in business with his father for 10 years. He purchased the franchise in 1966.
John was active in the community. He was a member and past president of the Sidney Rotary Club, the West Nebraska United Chambers of Commerce, the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce and the Fort Sidney Colonels.
In 1963, John was selected as one of the three Outstanding Young Nebraskans by the Nebraska Jaycees. He was a 50-year member of the United Methodist Church. John sang in the choir and was chairman of the building committee that erected the sanctuary now standing at 11th Avenue. He was also a member of Frank Welch Lodge #75, A.F. & A.M., the Panhandle Players and the Chamber Ambassadors. John served on the regional Dodge Dealership Advertising Association Board for 25 years, receiving a Five Star Award from the Chrysler Corporation.
He served three terms on the Airport Authority, one term as president of the Board of Commissioners of Cheyenne County and was chairman of the Cheyenne County Republican Party.
Among John’s interests were Husker and Bronco football, sailing, skiing, collecting antique cars and traveling. He always believed in giving back to his community and country. John will be greatly missed by many.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred of Sidney; son, John S. Elwell and fiancee’ Andrea Meyer; daughters, Ann and husband Ben Darling of Sidney and Margaret and husband Dr. Brad Ropp of East Lansing, Mich.; two sisters, Jane Christopher of San Leandro, Calif. and Lois and husband M.E. Robinson of Savannah, Ga.; sister-in-law, Ann and husband Bill Cannon of Scottsbluff; brother-in-law, Dr. John C. Yeakley and wife Carolyn of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren and 15 nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Jack Christopher.
Elwell, longtime Dodge dealer, dead at 70
John W. Elwell, longtime Sidney businessman and community leader, died Sunday, Feb. 24, in a Denver hospital after a short illness.
A memorial service is planned, but details will not be announced until later today. There has been cremation.
Elwell, and his father before him, have been synonymous with Dodge automobiles in the southern Panhandle for decades.
The senior Elwell moved his dealership from Kimball to Sidney in 1945 and John W. purchased the dealership from his parents in 1985. He sold the dealership to Maddox Motors in 1993, but continued with a car leasing and rental business.
Elwell was born in Kimball, but graduated from Sidney High School in 1949. After earning his degree from the University of Nebraska in 1953, he married Mildred Yeakley on June 14, 1953. The couple moved to Sidney from Atlanta, Ga., in 1955 where he was associated with his father at Elwell Motors.
He was active in his community including the chamber of commerce, singing with the Fort Sidney Colonels, Panhandle Players, and the United Methodist Church. He was a member of the advisory board of Dodge Dealers. In 1963, the Nebraska Jaycees named him one of three Outstanding Young Nebraskans.
He served a term as member of the Cheyenne County Board of Commissioners.
John is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.

Tove French
Tove French, 79, Page, Neb., died Tuesday, Feb. 26 at Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital in O’Neill, Neb. Her funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Page. Burial will follow in the Page Cemetery.
Visitation is today from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Biglin’s Mortuary in O’Neill.
Survivors include her husband, Carroll of Page; two daughters, Kirsten Wettlaufer and husband Randy of Page and Inge Sthreshley and husband Larry of Yaounde, Cameroon; son, Niels French and wife Birgitte of Alpharetta, Ga.; brother, Frede Ipsen of Herning, Denmark; sister-in-law, Ruth Fassel of Ronne, Bornholm and eight grandchildren.
Willard George Roberts 1938-2002
Willard George Roberts, 63, retired American Airline Captain and a former Dalton resident, died Feb. 15, 2002 after a courageous battle with CBGD. Graveside service was held Monday, Feb. 18 at Restland Memorial Park with a memorial service following at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to Chapel Hill United Methodist Church or a charity of choice.
Willard George Roberts was born Sept. 11, 1938 in Bridgeport, Neb., the son of William and Martha (Crowley) Roberts. He grew up and graduated in Dalton with his legal guardians Laurence and Mary Crowley Miller. George attended Scottsbluff College on a football and track scholarship and completed college at Adams State on a football scholarship. He then enlisted and spent 5 1/2 years active duty in the Navy, retiring as Lt. Commander in 1987 from the Navy Reserves. George joined American Airlines in 1966 and retired as Captain after 32 years of devoted service.
He sought out life’s adventures and lived them the best he could. George will be remembered for his relentless hospitality and generosity, especially to those who did not have much. He loved company of family and friends and believed everyone deserved to be trusted.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Verna Roberts; sons, Barry Roberts, Bryan Roberts, Ricky Roberts and wife Shannon and Rex Roberts; brother, Wayne Roberts and wife Suzanne; sister, Mary Lou Peterson and husband Ron; and extended family members; brother, Larry Miller and wife Nancy of Dix; sisters, Laura Merchant and husband Don, Tammy Gass and husband Greg, Patti Dorshorst and husband Duane and Pam Barber; brother-in-law, Allen Briggs; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his daughter, Julie Ann Roberts; both parents and legal guardians and two sisters, Elaine Stacy and Mabel Briggs.
