Harvard resident Paul Schroeder, 76, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at the Harvard Rest Haven.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Stan Crawford officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Schroeder was born March 9, 1924, to Clement and Alvina Leona (Wahler) Schroeder in Corning, Mo. On Oct. 6, 1984, he married Lucille Moore. They moved from Auburn to Hastings in 1993. He was a construction worker.
Survivors are his wife; two stepdaughters, Dixie Carver of Hastings and Janet Radley of Corning; one sister, Ruth Radley of Mound City, Mo.; one brother, Glen of Arvada, Colo.; and five stepgrandchildren.
A memorial has been established.
Pearl L. Paulson

Franklin resident Pearl L. (Kiggins) Paulson, 93, died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Kearney County Health Services Long Term Care in Minden.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Franklin United Methodist Church with the Rev. J.C. Browne officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Bloomington. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. until noon Thursday at Hutchins Funeral Home in Franklin and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.
Mrs. Paulson was born Aug. 29, 1906, to William and Carolyn (Barnes) Kiggins in Phillips County, Kan. She attended Franklin School. On June 24, 1928, she married Clarence A. Paulson in Red Cloud. She spent most of her life in Hildreth, Upland and Bloomington. In 1971 she moved to Franklin. She worked as a seamstress in the area. On April 29, 1979, her husband died.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Rebekah Lodge, Extension Club and Ceramics Club in Upland. She also was a 4-H Leader in Upland and a Girl Scout leader in Hildreth.
Survivors are one son, Ed of Hastings; two daughters, Jean Mankhey of Franklin and Helen Robison of Republican City; one sister, Jennie Cummings of Ventura, Calif.; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Lesley W. 'Jim' Ockinga

Glenvil resident Lesley William "Jim" Ockinga, 78, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Glenvil with the Rev. Timothy Wiggins officiating. Burial will be in the Glenvil Cemetery. McLaughlin Funeral Home of Clay Center is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Ockinga was born May 14, 1921, to Henry and Katie (Onken) Ockinga in Spring Ranch. He attended country schools in Clay and Adams counties. On May 10, 1942, he married Helen E. Yost in Hastings. He was a farmer in Clay County and a substitute mail carrier.
He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Kevin of Glenvil; one brother, Harold of Lakewood, Wash.; three sisters, Marie Davis and Evelyn Everson, both of Glenvil, and Alice Mock of Hastings; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Donita Colburn; three brothers; and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the family or the donor's choice.
Marjorie P. Fish

Blue Hill resident Marjorie P. (Schunk) Fish, 87, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Blue Hill Care Center.
Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at the Blue Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Baldeo Singh officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Hill Cemetery. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Fish was born June 13, 1912, to Arthur and Louise (Stabenow) Schunk in Blue Hill. She graduated from Blue Hill High School in 1929 and taught at rural school District 58. On Dec. 23, 1939, she married Theron "Bud" Fish in Hastings. She began teaching at Blue Hill Public Schools in 1944. She earned a bachelor's degree from Hastings College in 1955 and a master's degree in education from Kearney State College in 1967. She retired in 1982 after 51 years of teaching. On Sept. 24, 1988, her husband died.
She was a member of the Blue Hill United Methodist Church, Royal Neighbors of America, Chapter W, P.E.O. of Blue Hill, Hastings Retired Teachers Association and the Acacia Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She earned the Certification of Achievement Award from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the Service to Education Award from Kearney State College and was a member of the Who's Who Society of Nebraska Educators.
Survivors are one son, Bob of Hastings; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
A memorial scholarship fund has been established.
Ada M. Blauvelt

Hastings resident Ada M. (Clement) Blauvelt, 59, of 126 E. Sixth St. died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Larry Gyhra officiating.
Mrs. Blauvelt was born Aug. 24, 1940, to Hubert J. and Erma (Coplin) Clement in North Loup. She moved with her family at an early age to Hastings and grew up there. In 1956 she moved to Newton, Iowa, and graduated from high school there. She returned to Hastings in 1958. On Feb. 7, 1959, she married Gary G. Blauvelt in Hastings. They lived in Newfoundland, Canada, while her husband was in the service. They moved to Lincoln in 1961 and back to Hastings in 1964. She worked at Daylight Donut Shop in Hastings for more than 25 years.
She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church.
Survivors are her husband; four daughters, Theresa Jiron of Denver, Deborah Walker of Juniata, Suzanne Barrera of Hastings and Lisa Blauvelt of Sunderland, Germany; two sons, Thomas of Colorado Springs, Colo., and David of Virginia Beach, Va.; her mother of Des Moines, Iowa; two sisters, Sharon Brue of Norwalk, Iowa, and Thanna Ritter of Des Moines; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father; her stepfather, Mervin F. Behrens; and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.
Howard R. Melton

Geneva resident Howard R. Melton, 79, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, in Geneva.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Geneva with the Rev. Brian Kottes officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in York. Visitation begins 1 p.m. Wednesday at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva.
Mr. Melton was born March 23, 1920, to Walter and Laura (Schoch) Melton in Charleston. He married Maria Andreas.
Survivors are his wife; one son, James H. of Lincoln; one sister, Betty Jane Radcliff of York; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the church or the Geneva Rescue Unit.
Bertha E. Hoffman

Harvard resident Bertha E. (Runge) Schliep Hoffman, 89, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Harvard Rest Haven.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Harvard United Church of Christ with the Rev. Stan Crawford officiating. Burial will be in the Clay Center Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Alberding-Wilson Funeral Home in Harvard.
Mrs. Hoffman was born Sept. 21, 1910, to William and Lizzie Runge near Clay Center. She graduated from Clay Center High School in 1927. On Feb. 19, 1931, she married Ralph Schliep. He died in 1967. She worked as a bookkeeper at Inland Co-op Oil for several years and retired in 1980. On Aug. 17, 1980, she married Lester Hoffman. He died in January 1999.
She was a member of Harvard United Church of Christ and the church Women's Fellowship.
Survivors are one stepson, Don Hoffman of Lincoln; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one stepson; three sisters; and three brothers.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Ruth C. Bott

Hastings resident Ruth C. (Herzog) Bott, 88, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Perkins.
Rosary is 10 a.m. and services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Doniphan with the Rev. John Hawkins officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Trumbull. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Doniphan with the family present from 6-8 p.m.
Mrs. Bott was born Dec. 4, 1911, to John and Mary (Hein) Herzog in Clay County. She graduated from Trumbull High School. On July 18, 1942, she married John Bott in California. He died April 23, 1962.
She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.
Survivors are one daughter, M. Jane Craig of Waverly; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the Nebraska Children's Home Society or to the family.
Roy F. Ahrens

Superior resident Roy F. Ahrens, 90, died Thursday, June 24, 1999, at Good Samaritan Home in Nelson.
Services are 11 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Superior with the Rev. Mark Diehl officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation is 1-5 p.m. today and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior.
Mr. Ahrens was born Aug. 17, 1908, to Clarence M. and May (Hahn) Ahrens near Mankato, Kan. He attended Ruebens Grade School and graduated from Mankato High School, both in Mankato. On July 29, 1928, he married Bernice J. Wyatt in Mankato. They farmed in the Jewell County area for many years. After retirement, they moved to Superior.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Superior, the Superior Country Club and Elks Lodge No. 2197 of Superior.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Jerry of Superior; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Walter E. 'Gene' Pierce

Hastings resident Walter Eugene "Gene" Pierce, 76, of 1129 Circle L, died Friday, June 25, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion in Hastings.
Memorial services are 11:30 a.m. Monday at GSV All Saints Chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial will be 9:45 a.m. Monday in Axtell Cemetery in Axtell. Visitation is 4-9 p.m. today and 1-7 p.m. Sunday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings.
Mr. Pierce was born July 8, 1922, to Herman Leo and Anna Belle (Smith) Pierce in Eddyville. He attended school in Eddyville. On March 28, 1942, he married Doris R. Frederick. He lived in the Dawson County area for most of his life. For many years he worked in the family trucking business. He also was employed by Eddyville Schools in Eddyville, Bethphage Mission of Axtell, Dawson County, Hennek's Store, the State of Nebraska and Dawson Public Power. In 1984 he retired and moved to Callaway for seven years. In 1991, he and his wife moved to Good Samaritan Village in Hastings.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Hastings.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Geraldine Yost of Ravenna; one son, Homer of Lexington; two sisters, Margaret Spies of Merrill, Iowa, and Betty Lemmer of Lexington; one brother, Donald of Denver; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters; two brothers; and one grandchild.
Memorials may be given to Good Samaritan Village or to the donor's choice.
Lydia Gulzow

Hastings resident Lydia (Meinke) Gulzow, 90, of The Kensington died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at The Kensington.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Revs. Harold Stromer, Kathleen Kasper and Howard Franzen officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
Mrs. Gulzow was born April 7, 1910, to Fritz and Martha (Tuenge) Meinke in St. Libory. On June 16, 1935, she married Herbert Gulzow. He died June 11, 1981.
She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, United Commercial Travelers Auxiliary and Grandmothers Bowling League.
Survivors are two daughters, Shirley Harms of Hastings and Marilynn Addington of Loveland, Colo.; three brothers, Ervin and Raymond, both of Grand Island, and Edward of Omaha; two sisters, Milda Crabtree of Blue Hill and Myrtle Reimers of Grand Island; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the church.
