Roland J. Arehart

Former Franklin County resident Roland J. Arehart, 67, of Holdrege, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at Christian Homes in Holdrege.
Memorial services are 2 p.m. Thursday at the North Park Assembly of God Church in Holdrege with the Revs. Bruce Dailey and Murray Jones officiating. Private family burial will be prior to services at Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Nelson Funeral Home in Holdrege with family present from 7-9 p.m.
Mr. Arehart was born April 7, 1932, to Yura Lymon and Mary Lovelia (Habben) Arehart in Holdrege. He lived on a farm east of Funk and attended first grade at Phelps County District 18 School. He moved with his family to a farm in Harlan County. He graduated from Ragan High School in 1950. In 1952 he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Smith, Ark., and Nuremberg, Germany. On April 17, 1953, he married Jacqueline Chadwick at Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege. They farmed in Franklin and Harlan counties. He and his wife moved into Holdrege in March. In July, he became a resident of Christian Homes.
He was a member of the North Park Assembly of God Church and a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Wilcox, Fridhem Lutheran Church in Funk and Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege.
Survivors are his wife; five sons, James of Franklin, Bruce of Holdrege, Mark of Gillette, Wyo., Steven of Wilcox and John of Elkhorn; two daughters, Karna Guthrie of Holdrege and Jane Sayer of Hastings; two brothers, Levi of Augusta, Kan., and Marvin of Wilcox; and 15 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one grandchild.
A memorial has been established.
Mary E. Slemin

Former Deweese resident Mary E. (Souchek) Slemin, 82, of Davey, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, in Lincoln.
Rosary is 7 p.m. today at Metcalf Funeral Home in Lincoln. Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Davey with the Revs. Thomas Kuffel and Robert Barnhill officiating. Burial will be at the Sunrise Cemetery in Wahoo with the Rev. Rudy Oborny officiating. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
Mrs. Slemin was born Dec. 23, 1916, to Joseph and Frances (Koci) Souchek in Deweese. She married Stanley Slemin. She worked for Woodmen Insurance in Lincoln for 24 years and retired in 1981 as a clerk. Her husband preceded her in death.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and its Altar Society. She also was a member of Catholic Daughters of America and Pink Sisters Auxiliary and a volunteer at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Lincoln.
Survivors are two daughters, Sandra Vales of Swanton and Karen Winship of Lincoln; one sister, Agnes Masek of Lincoln; two brothers, Vaclav of Denver and Joseph of Clovis, Calif.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers.
Memorials may be given in care of the family.
Edith P. Sharp

Davenport resident Edith P. Sharp, 87, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, in Deshler.
Services are 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Davenport with the Rev. Lila Bottolfsen officiating. Burial will be in the Davenport City Cemetery. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Urbauer-Price Funeral Home in Davenport and two hours prior to services Thursday at the church.
Miss Sharp was born Aug. 24, 1912, to John and Minnie (Atkins) Sharp in Bladen. She graduated from Davenport High School and finished her schooling at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha. She became a certified X-ray technician and worked for Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis. She then moved to Los Angeles to work before returning to Davenport after her retirement.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivor is one sister, Ruth Novak of Davenport.
She was preceded in death by three brothers.
Memorials may be given to the church.
James A. Wassom

Chester resident James A. Wassom, 81, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church in Chester with the Rev. Paul G. Albrecht officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery near Chester. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart-Surber Funeral Home in Chester.
Mr. Wassom was born July 5, 1918, to James E. and Gladys (Mahaffey) Wassom in rural Belvidere. He was a farmer in Thayer County. On Jan. 15, 1941, he married Lorna F. Aufderheide. She died June 7, 1992.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church.
Survivors are three sons, Don of Chester, Robert of Hubbell and Vernon of Alexandria; two brothers, Dale of Deshler and Lowell of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; four sisters, Izetta Tucker of Leavenworth, Kan., Novella Wilson and Doris Broadfoot, both of Topeka, Kan., and Viola Schroeder of Madison; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mary T. Schroeder

Giltner resident Mary T. (Cordes) Schroeder, 67, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Rosary is 7 p.m. today at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Giltner with the Revs. John Keefe, Victor Derwinski, Andrew Augustyn and James Janovec officiating. Burial will be in the Giltner Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Schroeder was born Oct. 16, 1932, to Henry and Sylvia (Janovec) Cordes in St. Libory. She attended St. Libory Catholic Grade School and graduated in 1950 from St. Mary's Catholic High School in Grand Island. She also graduated from the Kearney Teacher's College in Kearney. She taught in St. Libory rural schools. On June 24, 1952, she married Donald F. Schroeder at St. Libory Catholic Church. They farmed near St. Libory until 1973 when they moved to Giltner. They owned and operated the Giltner Tavern until retiring in 1982. She opened Mary's Place Cafe in Giltner in 1989. In 1992 her husband died.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She worked with Meals on Wheels and was a sponsor of Hooked on Fishing.
Survivors are four sons, Thomas and Ron, both of St. Paul, Dave of Alexandria, Va., and John of Grand Island; three daughters, Jane Obermeier and Janet Bish, both of Giltner and Mary Beth Voss of Alexandria, Va.; one brother, Donald of Falls Church, Va.; one sister, Donna Fischer of Charlotte, N.C.; and 23 grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one brother.
Memorials may be given to the Giltner EMTs or the Mary Schroeder Scholarship Fund.
Evelyn N. Engel

Hastings resident Evelyn N. (Hansen) Engel, 80, of 3501 S. Valley Road, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Harold D. Stromer officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
Mrs. Engel was born May 18, 1919, to Bert and Lavina (Curry) Hansen in Britt, Iowa. She graduated from Trumbull High School. She attended Nebraska College of Commerce in Hastings for one year. On Aug. 2, 1940, she married Arnold L. Engel. They lived in Hastings.
She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Beverly Routh of Lincoln; one son, Dennis of Hastings; one half sister, Carol Brown of Fairfield, Calif.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother.
Memorials may be given to the church or the Alzheimer's Association of Nebraska in her name.
Fern Wilson

Red Cloud resident Fern (Wade) Wilson, 97, died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at Webster County Community Hospital in Red Cloud.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Anderson Kwankin officiating. Burial will be in the Red Cloud Cemetery.
Mrs. Wilson was born March 20, 1902, to Ern and Arzona (Stansbury) Wade in Geneva. She attended school and lived in Nelson. On Jan. 28, 1926, she married Ernest Wilson. They farmed northeast of Guide Rock before moving to a farm near Cowles in 1929. In 1964 they retired and moved to Red Cloud. On May 25, 1979, her husband died.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors are one daughter, Joan Vavricka of Red Cloud; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three siblings and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be given to the Elm Street Center in Red Cloud.
Mary 'Jean' Frisbie

Former Campbell resident Mary "Jean" (Smith) Frisbie, 90, of York, died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at the Hearthstone Care Center in York.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in York. Burial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Osco Cemetery near Norman.
Mrs. Frisbie was born Oct. 2, 1909, to Arthur and Amanda (Sallee) Smith in Campbell. She graduated from Campbell High School in 1926 and from Hastings College in 1934. She taught at rural school districts in the Campbell area and at Diller High School in Jefferson County. On May 21, 1936, she married Leonard "L.D." Frisbie. He died in November 1993.
Survivors are two daughters, Carol Lee Reiber of Lakeland, Fla., and Linda Jean Chevalier of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two sons, Noel F. of York and Leonard "Dale" of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Campbell; two sisters, Artie Faber of Colby, Kan., and Marian Brunke Meredith of Sun City, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by three sisters and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the Nebraska Chapter of the Alzheimer's Research Foundation.
R. Lorraine Ott

Oxford resident R. Lorraine (Wohlgemuth) Ott, 76, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Oxford with the Rev. George Naylor officiating. Private burial will be at a later date at the Orleans Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Nelson Funeral Home of Holdrege is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors are her husband; three daughters; one son; two sisters, including JoAnn Bramble of Hastings; and two grandchildren.
Verna M. Hulme

Former Tribland area resident Verna M. (Daily) Hulme, 80, of Central City, died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at Community Care of America in Central City.
Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Kenesaw Cemetery with the Rev. Eric Parker officiating. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9-10 a.m. at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw.
Mrs. Hulme was born Feb. 22, 1919, to Joseph and Maggie (Oliver) Daily in Prosser. She attended school in Prosser and lived most of her life in the Hastings area. On Nov. 18, 1940, she married Frank E. Hulme in Kearney. They moved to Central City in 1992. On Aug. 25, 1993, her husband died.
She was a member of the Methodist church.
Survivors are two daughters, Francis Moore of Central City and Margaret Smets of Leigh; one brother, Gordon of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers; two sisters; and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be given to the family.
Marie Bailey

Superior resident Marie (Woodward) Bailey, 81, died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Superior.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Methodist Church in Guide Rock with the Rev. Anderson Kwankin officiating. Burial will be in the Guide Rock Cemetery. Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Bailey was born Oct. 8, 1918, to Irvine and Mary (Perry) Woodward in Guide Rock. She attended grade school at District 17 and graduated from Guide Rock High School in 1936. On March 2, 1937, she married Clifford Bailey in Mankato, Kan. They lived most of their lives farming near Guide Rock. She and her husband worked as custodians at the Guide Rock Public Schools for 18 years. On Oct. 20, 1997, her husband died.
She was a member of the Methodist Church and the Rotary Welfare Club.
Survivors are two sons, Gerald of Paradise, Calif., and Kenneth of Guide Rock; one daughter, Gloria VanBoening of Lawrence; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five siblings.
